Maybe some of that had to do with the league's generally minimal focus on offense for so many years, but we can debate that in another entry. Regardless, its defensive credibility is rock solid.

But in recent years, a steady influx of offensive changes from coaches to schemes has balanced the league and made it all the more dangerous.

But, as noted at the Daily Texan, there's also been a barely noticed flow of defensive coaching talent away from the SEC. Former Auburn star defensive coordinators Gene Chizik and Will Muschamp have made their way to the Big 12. Chizik was Texas' defensive coordinator before being hired as the head coach at Iowa State. Muschamp, meanwhile, is Texas' new D.C.

Elsewhere, former Alabama defensive coordinator Joe Kines is now the D.C. at Texas A&M. Chances are, those three have been adequately replaced, but their departure and the SEC's changing offensive makeup seems to indicate a change from the All D, No O days of SEC past. I doubt wide open offensive football with not much defense like on display in the WAC ever finds a home in the SEC. OK, severely doubt it. But it is interesting to note a modest departure of defensive coaching talent as a steady wave of offensive coaching talent moves in.

Related: I wonder if this perks up the state of defense in the suddenly wide-open, quarterback loaded Big 12?

(Via: Football Rumor Mill)
The SEC's Shifting Defensive Sands originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Thu, 03 Jul 2008 13:36:00 EST .
Your absolute, ultimate, professional pretender. Sure, they're popular, but that's because they're right there in Hollywood. Setting foot on national TV for the sole purpose of getting laughed right back off of it. An uncanny ability to make people sick of them before enjoying them.

Key comparison: HIS COACHNESS SIR RICK NEUHEISEL <3 and Caliendo's impression of John Madden.
Transcendent in the 80s, still outstanding in the 90s, but now the wheels are off the track, and the words most bandied about are "senile," "bitter," and "angry."

Undeniably popular, and probably earning it. Probably. Sure, there's an odor of douche to it all (Colt McCoy, get a real name, please), but that comes with popularity these days, right? Right? Whatever, you're just jealous.

Key comparison: Superfinger and Hook'Em salute. Put them together, and it's Wonder Twin Powers Activate!

Whiter than white. That goes for the fanbase, too. Still, lovably competent without any delusions of grandeur.

Aside from Snoop Dogg.

Key comparison: "When I was on acid, I would see things like beams of light. And I would hear things that sounded an awful lot like car horns" and Marshawn Lynch commandeering the injury cart.

And what's with all the yelling? Must they seriously lead in the field of yelling? Oh, the answer is "yes"? Okay then.

Key comparison: That car crash and the Dennis Franchione Era. And that's being kind to Franchione.

Larry the Cable Guy: Arkansas

While they're playing off a reputation for being country as hell, they're actually running an incredibly profitable operation, and that's no accident, despite being only tangentially connected with the concept of quality.

Key comparison: "Soooooeeeeee!" and "Get 'er done." You're getting played, fans. Hard.
We don't care what their bank account says, anyone with half a brain cell knows they're fake as hell. Every second they spend in a state of popularity and success, another decent American stops believing in a just and loving God. A fan base with a uniformly room-temperature IQ. Someone please, please shut them up.

Key comparison: "Der Dee Der" and "O-H-I-O." I learned how to spell "Ohio" when I was three, and was no longer proud of knowing how when I was four.
Despite what their name tells you, they're not exactly 100% Irish. Was on top of the world for an extended period of time, but what exactly have they accomplished in the last, oh, 15 years? They put all their eggs in the "insane obesity" basket, and uh, that may not have been the wisest long-term solution.

Key comparison: Charlie Weis and Nutty Professor/Norbit.
Brilliant? Totally. Ass-ugly? Equally so. Unqualified success and superstardom? Ehhh, not quite. If you're looking for discussion of Star Trek, Dungeons & Dragons, or Magic: The Gathering, this is your jam, man. Just don't expect to impress the ladies when you show up to a party in a t-shirt with their name on it.

Honestly, though, you can't really discuss them without their cohorts. Please, observe:

Brian Posehn: Vanderbilt

Same goes.
I gave Stanford to Zach for the sweater. That's all.

Key comparison: Look at those guys. Like I'm comparing LSU to any of them. C'mon.
Unhinged enough to scare just about all the white fans. Not scare them away, mind you, but just keeping them abreast of the fact that there's a strange, scary world out there, and they're best admiring from a safe, large distance.

Key comparison: No Sex in the Champagne Room and The Seventh Floor Crew. Two vastly divergent, if equally candid, views on sexuality and the world as a whole.
BONUS! key comparison: Ray Lewis is totally the Tossed Salad Man.

Sinbad: Oregon

More urbane than most of the rednecks with whom they're in league, which makes them more likable. Wearing a doo-doo-eatin' sneer awhile they rip off hit after hit. "We would have a panel like the one that chooses the 65 teams in basketball."
Two thoughts spring immediately to mind:

Amen.

Holy crap, I do not want to be a guy on that panel.

Just imagine it now: through some hilariously improbable series of events you, reader, are plucked from the masses of college football fans to sit on this panel. You are given a choice between completely indistinguishable teams.

Since team A and team B played teams like Utah State and Northern Colorado in the nonconference (and so did everyone else in team A and team B's conferences), there is absolutely no basis for comparison between the two teams. But one agenda item that he is pushing strongly is a fifth year of eligibility for football players. He hopes the proposed change will get some attention from the NCAA rules committee.

The proposal for a fifth year of eligibility would eliminate redshirting, instead giving college football players five years to compete on the field. Under current rules, players have a five-year window in which to complete four years of playing time. This isn't the first time this change has come up, but opponents have argued that eligibility rules need to standard across sports. Big 12 commissioner Beebe, disagrees.
Beebe, however, said he thinks football should be seen as unique because it has a high rate of redshirts and injuries.

"Injuries happen and coaches have players who could contribute, but they don't want to play someone on a limited basis and burn a redshirt year," Beebe said. "And you have kids during their redshirt year who are getting the heck beat out of them in practice every day with no hope of playing."
The rule change would certainly eliminate the need for coaches to agonize about redshirting decisions. In addition, it would seemingly end the need for athletes and schools to file medical hardships in the wake of injuries. Lastly, given that the average college football player takes around 4.7 years to graduate, the five-year eligibility window could help improve graduation rates.
Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe Pushing for Fifth Year of Eligibility originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Wed, 21 May 2008 11:35:00 EST . The Daily Texan, the student newspaper at the University of Texas, reported this information in their blog. According to a recent editorial in The Daily Texan, this set off a firestorm of criticism from at least one official in the UT athletic department.
"Last month, The Daily Texan reported on its blog that the Austin Police Department suspended an assault with injury investigation in which Longhorns backup quarterback John Chiles was a suspect. When the Texan originally reported that APD confirmed Chiles as a suspect, assistant athletics director John Bianco wrote several threatening e-mails to Daily Texan sports editor and journalism senior Ricky Treon, calling him unprofessional and his reporting "untruthful." Bianco warned that other news agencies (and potential employers) "realize how you do business now," which "will hurt you in the long run." He also said that if the Texan's editors didn't pull the post off the blog, "John Chiles would understandably have an issue with the entire paper" which would be "unfortunate for the Texan's long-term working relationship with him."
The editorial goes onto discuss the "rules" of covering big-time college athletics, culminating with the following thoughts:
"The bottom line is that press scrutiny is simply not accepted by sports officials or the public fan base. At UT, reporters are not allowed to call athletes, and both athletes and reporters face being reprimanded for unauthorized interviews, no matter what the story is about. More importantly, university officials are under pressure to protect the image of their sports programs, which are at the forefront of bringing in money, identity and recognition to the school."
Interestingly, this is not the first time this spring that a Big 12 student newspaper has found itself in trouble with an athletic department because of the paper's coverage of the football team. Earlier Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini temporarily banned The Daily Nebraskan for a piece criticizing his handling of an alleged criminal incident. These situations taken together only seem to solidify the point made by the Daily Texan's editorial piece. Ultimately public institutions are accountable to the public, and I'd certainly contend it's the media's job to help ensure this occurs.

via The Wiz
Texas Student Newspaper Battles Athletic Department Over Coverage of Football Team originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Thu, 08 May 2008 17:26:00 EST . Or in the case, internet rumors appear to have some basis in fact. G.J. Kinne, a backup quarterback at Texas has indeed decided to transfer.
"I chose the best school at what was the end of a very successful, but difficult high school career," Kinne said. "I have definitely become a better quarterback with the help of one of the most knowledgeable offensive coaches in college football, Greg Davis. However, the quarterback position is unique in terms of playing time, and I have to find a program that best fits my skills.

"Quarterbacks transfer in college football. That's life for this position.I've made great memories, great friends and have been blessed with experiences most can only watch. So the answer is, 'No, I have no regrets.'

"I'm looking forward to what the future holds for me. I wish nothing but great things for The University of Texas. I appreciate all that Coach Brown and The University have done for me."
Kinne's decision to leave, could point to the continued development of John Chiles as the next great Texas quarterback. In addition, the Longhorns' continued success in recruiting top-flight quarterbacks out of the high school ranks has made transfers like this more likely to occur. Jevan Snead, another backup, left the program in 2006.

This is not the first transfer for Kinne in his career. In 2006, as a high schooler, Kinne left Canton High School after his dad, the head coach, was shot by an angry parent.
Texas Backup QB to Transfer originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Mon, 07 Apr 2008 06:38:00 EST . Charles led the Big 12 in rushing in 2007 on the strength of a fantastic second half of the season. Three backs will fight it out over the starting running back gig in 2008.
Sophomore Vondrell McGee will get first shot at the starting job after serving as Charles' understudy a year ago. When Charles was having consistency problems at midseason in 2007, McGee actually got more playing time, specifically on short-yardage and goal-line plays. He gained 297 yards overall and scored eight touchdowns.

Redshirt freshman Fozzy Whittaker and McGee share the same, low-to-the-ground build. Both resemble miniature linebackers.

Whereas McGee prefers the I-formation, Whittaker is more comfortable running out of the shotgun. That's how he made his yardage at Pearland High School, where he finished with the sixth-best rushing total in Class 5A history.

The third member of the committee is Chris Ogbonnaya, a well-known offensive commodity. The Longhorns often turned to Ogbonnaya on third-down situations last fall because he was as adept at running pass routes as he was at picking up the blitz. He caught 21 passes a year ago. To prepare for this season, the fifth-year senior dropped 12 pounds to improve his speed. He's now at 215.
We'll look elsewhere in the Big 12 after the jump.At Texas Tech, a familiar name tries to work his way out of a familiar place - Mike Leach's doghouse. The familiar name is Shannon Woods, who finally appears to be on the right track. That's good news for the Red Raiders and for Woods, who found himself on the scout team in 2007. Woods will be trying to return to his 2006 form, in which he rushed for almost 1,500 yards. So far, so good.
"Everything. Everything,'' Littrell said. "He has 18 (spring-semester) hours, making As and Bs. He hasn't missed class one time. He's been up here. He's been respectful. He's done everything we've asked of him so far. He's just got to continue to work and do it.

"Shannon's a good kid. I mean, he really is. There's a lot of speculation with what goes wrong and our relationship. Some of it's speculation. With me, it's all going to stay in-house.

"But he's done a good job. He's doing everything we've asked him to do.''
Nebraska appears to have its starting running back in Marlon Lucky who passed up the NFL Draft and is the top returnee in 2008 in terms of rushing yardage in the Big 12. Behind Lucky, however, the picture is less clear.

Cody Glenn who's shown flashes when healthy (a rare occurrence) recently made the move to linebacker.
"I don't know much. I know a little bit, still trying to learn and get things done," said Glenn, who got minimal reps. "It's hard to really do anything when you're thinking as much as I'm trying to think, getting everything down."

"It all comes down to me just trying to help the team out, wanting to win. I can't say we've won a lot of games since I've been here. So really, this is my senior year. Basically I just want to win. Whatever it takes, that's what I want to do."
The move is interesting given the fact that Glenn is a senior and seems unlikely to redshirt. He'll have the spring to learn some things, but better be ready to go by August if he hopes to see the field on the defensive side of the ball. Nebraska will be replacing all three of its starters at linebacker from 2007, so Glenn could get a chance to contribute.

Part of the reason behind Glenn's move could be the emergence of sophomore running back Roy Helu. Helu might be the most complete back on the team, and looks to have grabbed the backup RB spot with a strong spring.

Finally, Oklahoma has the their own concerns at running back, but they will likely be short-lived. The Sooners are missing their top two running backs - DeMarco Murray and Chris Brown - who are sitting out the spring with knee injuries. That has opened the door for guys like sophomore Mossis Madu.
"He's a guy not everybody has really had a chance to see a lot of. I made this comment to a lot of people: Mossis Madu can play for a lot of people," running backs coach Cale Gundy said. "I'm fortunate to be a coach at a position that has a lot of depth. It's good for him to get a chance to go through the spring with the No. 1 offense and show people what he can do."

Spring at a Glance: Big 12 Running Backs originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Fri, 04 Apr 2008 09:28:00 EST . That's right, it seems everyone in the conference is getting physical.

At Texas, it has been new defensive coordinator Will Muschamp who has the Longhorns playing tougher.
"We've had the most physical practices we've ever had," [head coache Mack] Brown said. "We were more physical last spring, but this spring we've just continued. Obviously, Will's come in with some new defensive thoughts and we're working on those."
The players seem to be catching on:
"Every day, we're hitting, no matter where we are," cornerback Deon Beasley said. "Inside the bubble, outside, we're hitting. I think it's good for us to get some contact and for us to show that we're not only a fast team, but we're a physical one as well."
Nebraska's new head coach Bo Pelini also wanted the Huskers focusing on physical football.
Pelini labeled last year's defensive performance "irrelevant" and said he hasn't watched any of the tape from last year. He'll spend some time trying figure out what talent he has, and "tweaking" the scheme to the players. It will also be more physical.

"We're not gonna be out there playing tag, I promise you that," Pelini said.
It seems to be working, given his most recent post-practice comments:
"I thought the tempo was good," Pelini said. "It was physical. We made a lot of strides the first three days, especially defensively. They've got a lot to learn. But the tempo's good, the effort's good."
The same can also be said at Iowa State.
"It's getting real physical," [quarterback Austen] Arnaud said. "Not for me so much, just because I'm a quarterback. But I can see those other guys getting after it and working hard. Those pads are definitely popping out there."
And
[head coach Gene] Chizik said the team is stronger overall because of offseason work in the weight room and he hopes that translates into a more dominating presence on the field.

"Right now I'm really pleased," he said. "They're doing everything we ask them to do. They are very much trying to be a physical football team."
And finally, Oklahoma players went after one another in their first scrimmage despite a long list of guys sitting out with various injuries.
"There was some good physical hitting and we were around the football," defensive coordinator Brent Venables said.
This theme is of course be much funnier if you imagine as a sound byte montage a la John Stewart and The Daily Show, but you get the point.

Oh, and Olivia Newton John was hot, so there's always that.
Big 12 Teams Get Physical This Spring originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Tue, 01 Apr 2008 09:00:00 EST . Muschamp, whose name was tossed around for several head coaching gigs, is known for his intensity and passion for defensive football. And it appears that he has wasted no time in bringing that famed intensity, or should I say "BOOM!" to Austin.

One concept Muschamp developed is the Hard Hat Award, which is handed out to the player delivering the biggest hit at each spring practice session. The hat has quickly become a coveted piece of apparel.
"It's a big competition," said linebacker Rashad Bobino, Muschamp's initial honoree this spring. "Whoever has the hardest hit gets that hat and ends up moving into a starting role."
Muschamp's major goal for the Longhorns appears to be to mould them in his own image.
"You want your players to take the personality of their coach. That's the way I've always looked at it. I want our players to play excited and have fun playing with intensity ... with controlled aggression."
It should come as no surprise then Muschamp isn't above doling out a well-deserved chest bump or a well-deserved butt-chewing. But whatever the method, Texas players like defensive end Brian Orakpo seem thrilled to have Muschamp on board
"He'll get in your face, but he loves you to death. He's a very emotional coach. He brings that excitement and enthusiasm to the table that we need."

Muschamp Already Bringing Fire to Texas Defense originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Fri, 28 Mar 2008 10:45:00 EST . "You can make your share of plays, but if you're turning the ball over, it doesn't really matter."
Bates played wide receiver a year ago, but is a full-time quarterback for the time-being.

At Nebraska Joe Ganz begins the spring as the clear-cut number one QB after starting the final three games of the 2007 season. This is a new spot for Ganz who had spent three years in the program as a backup.
"It's weird," Ganz said. "It's going to be different."

"Now that I've gotten to where I want to, I'm just going to have to work that much harder to not let anybody take it from me," Ganz said. "I've worked too hard to let somebody come up and take the job from me, so I really don't need any more motivation than that."
In Stillwater, Zac Robinson also has the starting job locked down. The backup spot, however, is up for grabs. Sophomore Alex Cate and redshirt freshman Brandon Weeden will vie for the job.
"It's huge for those two guys," co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Gunter Brewer said about Friday's scrimmage and the three others that will take place this spring. "They have not had any live action. They found that out today. That's why live snaps are so much better than practice snaps. It's as close as you're going to get to a game against a defense that's throwing a lot of stuff at you."
At Oklahoma, Keith Nichol would like more playing time, but is apparently comfortable backing up Sam Bradford for the foreseeable future.
"I was disappointed, I'm not going to lie. But the team did really good and Sam played well. As an overall I was happy. From a selfish, personal standpoint, I was a little disappointed I wasn't playing. But at the same time the team is playing good and we're rolling, and I was happy about that. I had mixed emotions."
But backup quarterbacks at Texas might not be as happy, as internet rumors have Sherrod Harris and G.J. Kinne allegedly considering transferring. These rumors are news, however, to Mack Brown.
"There's been rumors for 100 years about players transferring, and it's always the third or fourth quarterback," Brown said. "That's 100 percent in my 33 years coaching.

"Neither one of them has said anything about it or discussed it. In fact, both took all the snaps in today's scrimmage and did really well.

"If anybody ever wants to transfer and has not come forward to us, we'd be the first to help them and get them a release anywhere they want to go. We've never asked a player to stay. We'll always give them a release to play against us, anywhere they want. We want happy players.

"I don't read the Internet, so you all will have to bring me the rumors so I can go ask them."

Spring at a Glance: Big 12 Quarterbacks originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Fri, 28 Mar 2008 08:04:00 EST . I don't really watch the NFL games so it was nice to sit down to USC playing Arizona State late in the evening. I had hoped it would begin something of a tradition for college football in having a marquee game on that night. That faith has been rewarded.

This year they've brought the Texas rivals together to play on the Holiday and as a bonus, it restores some tradition.

The Texas-Texas A&M football rivalry will move back to its traditional Thanksgiving slot for the next two years.

The longtime Thanksgiving event was moved to the day after in 1996. The switch back accommodates a Thanksgiving night ESPN broadcast, Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds said Monday.

Texas and Texas A&M have played on Thanksgiving 60 times in a rivalry that dates to 1894.

Nice. After a string of six consecutive victories, Texas has dropped the last two to the rival Aggies (12-7 and 38-30). I need a ruling from someone who watches more hip hop videos than I do.

St Bonaventure High School has a "recruiting coordinator" -- kind of odd for a high school to have, but whatever -- named Roger Sonsini. Or, rather, had. Sonsini had the ill fortune to say this in the aftermath of Darrell Scott's surprising decision to pick Colorado:

"Colorado came in on Friday and said and did something and offered something that Darrell and his mom couldn't pass up."
If this seems like a good way to lose your job, you win a prize:

Roger Sonsini, also an assistant coach at Ventura (Calif.) Now is the time to comment, comment like you're a guest on Jerry Springer. Comment like you're Maurice Clarett. Maybe the Scott family's retention of a lawyer who "who specializes in First Amendment law, defamation and civil litigation" has contributed to Sonsini's sudden reticence.
Guy Who Snitched on Darrell Scott Fired originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Tue, 19 Feb 2008 10:59:00 EST . Texas. Perhaps a harsh assessment for Rivals' #14 class, but as the dominant power in the nation's most football-mad state Texas should never, ever have a class outside of the top ten, even when it's kind of small. Texas whiffed on the top three players in-state, all of whom ended up at hated Oklahoma. Striking out on national #1 RB Darrell Scott was the icing on a mildly crap sundae for the Longhorns.

It's not that Texas' class is bad, per se. It's actually pretty good. (You can tell by the #14 above. That's math.) But there's no school in the country with a better built-in advantage when it comes to high school talent, and there's no way Texas should strike out on four of the top five players instate.

Mack Brown will spring his revenge soon, no doubt: rumor is that the next next Vince Young, class of 2009 QB Russell Shepard, is soon to don burnt orange.

4. Michigan State. If there was ever going to be a year when Michigan State re-asserted itself as a threat to Michigan instate or to Wisconsin, Minnesota, and increasingly irritating Cincinnati around the Midwest, this would be it. Michigan suffered a humiliating series of losses and much of the state was operating under the foregone conclusion that Lloyd Carr would be retiring at year's end. When Michigan made a hire, Rich Rodriguez swept out all but one Carr assistant. Mark Dantonio's long association with Jim Tressel was supposed to give him the edge when it came to Ohio recruits.

The result? Detroit wide receiver Fred Smith and no other four-star players. Michigan State struck out on instaters Nick Perry (USC) and Mark Ingram (Alabama) late; Ingram's decision to flee is especially grating since his father was one of Michigan State's best wide receivers. Ohio linebacker Taylor Hill took an official visit to MSU and liked it so much he committed to Michigan on the way home. Hell, linebacker Yourhighness Morgan took a look at MSU and said "thanks, but I'm going to play for Florida."

Florida Atlantic.

MSU ranks 7th in the Big Ten, and this was both their new-coach-bump year and a year in which Michigan changed coaches. Michigan's little brother continues to bow down.

3. Auburn. Tommy Tuberville got smoked up and down by Nick Saban. It's incredible. The top ten recruits in Alabama: 'Bama 7, Auburn 0. The top 20: 'Bama 14, Auburn 2. And this is coming off a six-year run of Auburn dominance in the Iron Bowl!

It gets worse. Of Auburn's top recruits, the two five-stars are JUCO guys and RB Onterrio McCalebb is not expected to qualify. Given Auburn's severe grade attrition a year ago, the NCAA Clearinghouse will probably gun down another four or five guys, leaving the Tigers with very little to combat Nick Saban's tide (ha!) of incoming talent. Tiger fans, savor this six-game win streak. It'll take some doing to keep it going.

One bright spot: they've got a guy named "T'Sharvan."

2. Iowa. No school has been hurt more by the increased competition in Illinois than Iowa. In 2005, Ron Zook was about to get fired at Florida and Tyrone Willingham was golfing his way out of the Notre Dame job, leaving Illinois wide open for a surging Iowa program. The Hawkeyes pulled six kids out of the state, one of them a five-star and four others four stars, en route to the #11 class in the country.

Enter Zook and Weis, exit light for Iowa recruiting. This year Iowa pulled only two Illinois commitments, both of them three-star kids, and the only reason QB John Wienke signed with Iowa was the sudden shift in Michigan's offensive philosophy brought about by the hiring of Rich Rodriguez. Iowa has no four star players among 24 commits and missed on the top two instate prospects. The third? James Ferentz, the son of Kirk Ferentz.

Iowa is languishing at #54 nationally, and if the rapidly aging 2005 class, now in their fourth year at Iowa, doesn't start living up to their hype things are going to start getting mighty crotchety in Iowa.

1. Tennessee. Hey, at least Iowa and Michigan State don't pretend to be national powers. Tennessee does, but they won't be for much longer if they keep up this recruiting pace. The other UT has 18 commitments and only four four-stars, none among the top 100, and one of those is a JUCO who will only provide two years of service. Tennessee struck out on every major target it swung at despite a surprising season that garnered an SEC championship game berth and a New Year's Day bowl victory.

The departures of renowned QB guru David Cutcliffe (for a death job at Duke) and his right-hand man Trooper Taylor contributed to the off year, but the end result at UT (#37) is something no program that considers itself elite should ever see on signing day. Fulmer may have staved off an axing this year; the long term trend is not good.%Gallery-6077%
The Country's Five Most Disappointing Recruiting Classes originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Wed, 06 Feb 2008 19:47:00 EST . Scott is Colorado's biggest recruit in the internet era of reruiting, Rivals #6 player in the country and likely a starter from day one. Texas fans have to be disappointed after losing out on both Scott and instate recruit Jermie Caloun (who picked hated Oklahoma).

UT does have five running back commits in this class, including national top-100 type DeSean Hales. Hales authored this year's most remarkable run on any level; video after the jump.

This rivals some of Mike Hart's feats:

Hales might end up a slot receiver, but the Texas RB job is there for the taking.
Colorado Picks Up Nation's Top Running Back originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Wed, 06 Feb 2008 13:06:00 EST . They died down for a while, but they're back in full force, with the Tuscaloosa News reporting that Applewhite is expected to fly to Texas to interview.

Applewhite would coach the Running Backs and serve as "Associate Head Coach", whatever that is. He currently makes $250,000 at Alabama and supposedly has a $50,000 buyout.

So far, the rumored departure seems to have had a minimal impact on the Tide's recruiting class, with a defensive tackle recruit offering this piece of bulletin board material:

"Oh, wow. A little (upsetting)," said defensive tackle Damion Square of Houston. "I would've loved to have Applewhite. If he wants to win championships, and I know Applewhite does, then he'll stay. You don't win no championships at UT, man. You win championships at UA. But he's got to do what he's got to do."

Someone might want to tell Mr. Square Alabama hasn't won a national title since 1992 and hasn't won the SEC since 1999.

For Texas's part, this would be a pretty good hire, says Peter Bean at Burnt Orange Nation:

I didn't let out a Backstreet Boys scream over the news, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited when I saw the reports that there are legs to a Major Applewhite hire... this year.

Right now, the biggest question in my mind is why Applewhite would take a step down in rank to coach at Texas when he's been the subject of so much interest to fill head coaching spots.
Applewhite to Texas? originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Tue, 15 Jan 2008 13:32:00 EST . Normally this is not an option, but if you redshirt a guy who then blows up it's a possibility. See: Michael Vick. Texas TE Jermichael Finley is the latest third-year sophomore to depart:

"The NFL is every football players dream and when my NFL grade came back, it was encouraging and I felt like it was in my best interest to enter the draft," Finley said in a statement. "I've worked really hard for three years at Texas to prepare for this and I think I'm ready for the challenge. Coach Chambers and all of the coaches have helped me improve and taught me so much that I can't thank them enough.
I wonder what that grade was. Whatever it is, it was probably not first-round. Finley had 45 catches for around 600 yards last year, decent but not unbelievable numbers. GBN does not have him in their top 135 draft prospects.

Tailback Jamaal Charles announced his intention to depart a couple weeks ago; remarkably, before that the only player to leave early under Mack Brown at Texas was one Vince Young. Which, like, duh.
Jermichael Finley Says So Long, Thanks For All the Fish originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Tue, 08 Jan 2008 23:14:00 EST . Suddenly, that marketplace for NFL-bound tailbacks is getting crowded. Texas was leading Arizona State 21-0 after the first quarter in tonight's Holiday Bowl, then things got interesting.

After marching deep into Texas territory, ASU quarterback Rudy Carpenter appeared to lateral the ball backwards as he was about to get sacked. Texas' defense pursued the loose ball as it neared the Longhorn sidelines then everything went to hell.

The Longhorns recovered the ball after some bobbles, but replay appeared to show a Texas staff member on the field barely touching the ball. Replay officials re-examined the play and determined that it had been a touch and returned the ball to ASU and flagged Texas for unsportsmanlike conduct. ASU immediately scored a 7-yard touchdown pass to bring the game to 21-7 and re-introduce them into what had been a Texas blowout.

Ever since, ESPN has been showing shot after shot of the staffer looking miserable on the sidelines. Credit to Kirk Herbstreit for bringing up the Steve Bartman example as ESPN cannot look away from the guy. Personally I watched the replay and it's hard to see where he touched the ball. He came darn close but appears to have just gotten his hand back as the ball skirted by him. Replay officials better be darn sure that he did in fact touch it because that has completely changed the complexion of this game.

Update: ESPN is now informing us that the staffer's name is Chris Jesse and he is Mack Brown's stepson.

Update: Image via referring thread (thanks) at FreeRepublic.com

Update: One more image (below). Unfortunately, nobody's getting arrested right now. Seriously. It's possible that there's some athletic director who's keeping it under wraps that a disgruntled second-string linebacker threw a frozen turkey through a police cruiser's windshield. Doubtful, though. Who knows; maybe tryptophan is The Man's best weapon in the fight against crime. More likely, though, is that all the crazies have already been arrested and suspended or kicked off their teams by now. So why not take a look back at the arrests that made athletic directors furious and rivals gleeful ...

If Purple Drank is a crime, why was it always in the refrigerator during the Sunny Delight commercials?: Texas safety Tyrell Gatewood found himself back in trouble with the law back in September after being pulled over for failing to signal a turn prior to 100 feet before turning. As Gatewood's lawyer will eagerly point out, that's a total DWB, but let's move on. When the officer pulled the car over, according to the Travis County sheriff's spokesman, he found marijuana, Xanax, and a baby bottle filled with codeine cough syrup. In other words, that's that purple drank, lawya.

Tyrell Gatewood was a senior, so the arrest was a pretty effective end to his career. Gatewood had earlier been cited for being asleep in the back of a car that had weed and guns, which go together like toothpaste and orange juice (seriously, who gets high and decides to knock some brains out?), so as sympathetic as coach Mack Brown may have been to a BS traffic stop, purple drank is lights out. Not just for half your neurons, but the last year of eligibility. The more you know, etc. etc.

You've got to admit, that's some admirable devotion to Movie Night: Iowa receiver Dominique Douglas, already suspended as he awaited charges of illegal credit card use, was arrested after Wal-Mart security footage showed the sophomore placing three DVDs under his shirt and leaving the store. Douglas was particularly easy to identify afterwards, but not because of any local notoriety; before the alleged theft, Douglas had been at the store's courtesy counter receiving a money order, a process that -- like illegal credit card use, as luck would have it -- creates a fairly damning paper trail.

The complaint alleged that he had stolen merchandise that totaled just over $30, but unfortunately, it doesn't specify which DVDs Douglas stole. Could it have been the Three Ninjas Trilogy? Nope; that's only $26.88. The mystery remains unsolved.

Pardon our intrusion, sir, but the "gun show" joke is only funny if you flex your biceps. Please put the automatic rifle away: There are many legal ways to resolve a conflict. They include verbal interaction, monetary transactions, and sometimes just a handshake. Considering the myriad peaceful resolutions, one conspicuously absent factor is firing a gun into the air. Ronnie Wilson, a defensive lineman for the Florida Gators, was arrested on April 5 for ignoring just that fact. Wilson noticed that he was being followed by a young man with whom he'd had an altercation that night, and did what all completely insane people do: he went to a parking lot, opened the trunk of a Crown Vic, and pulled out an AK-47. Wilson couldn't have known at the time, but his pursuer had been on the phone with the police the entire time. Oopsie. Wilson avoided time-out from the judge and got a year of probation, but he hasn't seen the field since.

R Kelly is planning a tribute album: It's always sad to see a young athlete piss his future away. Not only sad, really, but potentially disastrous if you're wearing nice shoes. Iowa long snapper Clint Huntrods (yes, another Iowa player; when a team's arrest rate is 10%, a couple of the incidents are bound to be pretty funny) was dismissed from the team after Iowa City policemen observed the young man relieving himself on a sidewalk two blocks away from jail. Huntrods, who may have stolen his last name from the back cover of an all-male pornography video, fled the scene when officers approached, but since he's 270 pounds and you're reading this today, you can probably figure out how that worked out for him. Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to elude the authorities, son.

The most troubling aspect of Huntrods's arrest is that the neighborhood in which Huntrods was arrested is filled with dark parking lots and alleys (your author lives but a mile away, after all). Getting arrested for urination on a sidewalk--where the street lights are--is just plain lazy. Combine that with the fact that the courts do not recognize the Dog Law of marked territory, and Clint's arrest is the silliest of the year. Congratulations, Mr. Huntrods.
Keeping 'The Man' Busy: A Retrospective of College Football Arrests in 2007 originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Fri, 30 Nov 2007 14:14:00 EST .
