First, there was the notion to begin referring to the team as "Pitt," even though we know that "sburgh" is still there, don't pretend it isn't. Then there's Dave Wannstedt covering his upper lip with 80% of a moustache on a routine basis. Now, their passing game will be ever more efficient and wondrous, all thanks to one player's casual attitude toward academics:

Pitt receiver Maurice Williams will sit out the season after being declared academically ineligible.

"We believe Maurice can achieve a lot at Pitt, both academically and athletically, and our expectations are for him to use this as motivation for improvement," Panthers coach Dave Wannstedt said in a statement.
Williams was expected to start after a productive true freshman season; instead, he will redshirt. This (go Iowa) is probably good news (I root for Iowa) to teams facing the Panthers this season (HAHAHAHA SUCK IT WANNSTACHE GO HAWKS WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO).

(WE'RE GOING TO TOTALLY OWN YOU ON SEPTEMBER 20 BRING IT SUCKAS)

Miami and Virginia Tech left in 2003 and Boston College in 2004. The conference sent Pitt, one of several 8-4 teams in the Big East to lose to Utah in the Fiesta Bowl. And there wasn't much reason to think the conference was going to get better any time soon. The conference was written off by the media and the blogospher didn't even bother to poke fun.

But something happened last week that most of us didn't even notice. The Big East was granted a spot in the BCS through 2013.

The reason is simple: no one noticed the news. No one questioned the Big East's place at the adult table. The reaffirmation wasn't even a note in BCS meeting coverage. "It was quiet,'' Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese said Tuesday. "The way I like it."
You'd never make it as a blogger Mr. Tranghese. You need to rub it in someones face every once in a while. The least you could do is hold up one of those foam we're #1 hands. Or one of six, I guess. How bout a little woot-woot? Oh fine!

Despite the picture on the right, you can't just point to West Virginia and say their two BCS bowl victories and three straight top ten finishes are the reason. But I won't argue with you if you do. It really has been the improvement of several teams in the Big East that has brought the conference back to respectability. Louisville was expected to be one of the better teams in the conference. And mostly, they've come through. But the real surprise has been the improvement of South Florida, Rutgers, and Cincinnati. And more recently, Connecticut.

While the conference still isn't flooding the first round of the NFL draft with players, it is putting a lot more teams in the top 25. Sure, some coaches have left for "greener" pastures. Others like Greg Schiano and Jim Leavitt have made commitments to their schools that don't involve contracts. There's a balance, and certainly enough rising programs and programs that are there to keep the Big East respectable. At least until the Big <strike>11</strike> 10 decides to add another team. Wankers.
Big East Keeps its BCS Status Sun Rises in the East originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Wed, 07 May 2008 17:30:00 EST . Louisville had five players drafted, while Pitt and West Virginia had three apiece. Rutgers, South Florida, Cincinnati, and Connecticut had two each. And for the first time since 1975, Syracuse did not have anyone selected.

That's 19 players drafted. And any way I slice it, that's just not all that good for a BCS conference. Looking at the distribution of what rounds the players were taken, it was pretty well spread out over the entire draft for the Big East. But that doesn't make it feel any better. It's especially bad if you look at a team like West Virginia that has had three 11 win seasons in a row along with three straight top ten finishes. They've had exactly four players drafted in the last three years. And Chris Henry and Pac Man Jones the year before that. So we won't even go there.

The ACC? Yeah, that conference we've been quietly laughing at after Miami, Va. Tech, and Boston College left. Yeah, they had 33 players drafted this past weekend. The coaching must really suck over there or something.

Pac 10? Oh, they had 37 players drafted. SEC? 35. Big 10? 28. Big 12? 27. Hell, C-USA had 11 players drafted! Patriot League? Never mind.

Even more upsetting for West Virginia fans, two players left early for the NFL and weren't drafted. Those two being Darius Reynaud and Johnny Dingle. Yeah, sorry folks. Those Dingle-Berry photo's won't be happening anymore. Those are definitely two players the Mountaineers could have used this year, though. I'm not saying that their stock would go up any with one more year of college. But it sure wouldn't go down.

Louisville will have the most holes to fill as well. You don't replace Brian Brohm, Harry Douglas, and Art Carmody. I know there are others, but those three were special at their positions. West Virginia won't be far behind with the loss of Slaton and most of the secondary and defensive line. Rutgers, well we don't know how bad it is because we haven't seen anyone but Ray Rice run the ball. The rest of the conference should be fine. And that's not a good thing if you think about it.
Louisville Wins the Big East Draft Again originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Mon, 28 Apr 2008 20:29:00 EST . Football news! February is like the worst sports month in the world! Unless you like meaningless mid-season NBA and NHL games. Sure I love NCAA basketball. But that love has been tainted by my coaches fashion sense and my teams ability to rip defeat from the jaws of victory. So I'm kind of not liking February at all.

Anyhow, some good news today football fans. The Big East released the 2008 football schedule. And while that's nothing compared to being in the stands after hours of tailgating and screaming obscenities at opposing fans and players, it is a reason for hope. The hope that another football season will soon be upon us.

And lookie, there are actually some good out of conference games this year. In September:

Cincinnati @ Oklahoma-Will the Sooners crumble again in the face of Big East might?

Penn St. @ Syracuse- When this game was scheduled Jo Pa was heard saying, "That Paul Pasqualoni is a tricky devil. We're going to have to find a way to shut down McNabb!"

Kansas @ South Florida- The Bulls can't be looking at this game the way they were a year ago.

West Virginia @ Colorado- This game fills the void left by Maryland opting out of the series. And given the size of Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen, that's quite a void to fill.

Iowa @ Pitt- Again, Iowa might not like this game as much as they did when they scheduled it.

Rutgers vs. TBA-Ah, the unknown enigma that is TBA. You just never know what team you're going to play.

October has two out of conference games of note. Auburn @ West Virginia and Pitt @ Notre Dame. This could be a buzz kill game for the Mountaineers. Even though it is a Thursday night game in Morgantown and the SEC doesn't know that you can play football on Thursday nights. It will be a tough test wedged in the middle of conference play. This could be a make or break game for West Virginia's national title hopes if they exist. Pitt has a score to settle with the Irish from the 2005 season opening game that, coincidentally, was the last time the Panthers were ranked.

This might be the last football news we get until spring practices start up in about a month. So enjoy it while you can.
2008 Big East Football Schedules Announced originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Mon, 25 Feb 2008 19:04:00 EST . Probably a lot like this years game will be remembered by Pitt fans. Badump-bah! The Voice of the Mountaineers, Jack Fleming narrates and at the 1:44 mark you can see that there used to be a lot more guns at Old Mountaineer Field. And hats off for getting Yes to do the sound track. That #33 for Pitt is some guy named Dorsett.

Besides being against a Pitt team that was ranked and had one of the best running backs in the history of college football, this game is most remembered for the dramatic ending that seems story book for the home team and nightmarish for the visitors as Bill McKenzie kicked the winning field goal as time expired. Not some of Fleming's best work, at least until they cut in to his live play-by-play.
Chas notes further that the defense's slide from good to real bad happened "minute the talent previously recruited started graduating" and follows it up with a wide array of links to previous stories about Rhoads' various failings as a coach -- no sour grapes upon departure these.

But... like, I dunno. That's four good years of seven at a program that's never had much in the way of support or talent until this recent inexplicable Wannalanche of high-profile recruits. As soon as Wannstedt's guys started seeing time with regularity, things bounced back up; Pitt Blather tends to blame Rhoads for the awful run defense when it could more properly be attributed to undersized and largely overlooked true freshman holding down key spots in the Pitt line in 2005 and 2006. At Auburn, Rhoads will not have the same issues.
Pitt Fans Not Exactly Broken Up About Losing Paul Rhoads originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Thu, 17 Jan 2008 13:55:00 EST . Normally, you'd be fairly amenable to free silver dollar pancakes, even if it means enduring some awkward conversation, but today is not a normal day. It's the high-school all-star game. Sorry, tootsie, but home boy has a date with Tom Lemming today, and no amount of waffles or eggs Benedict can interrupt.

If any of this made sense to you, congratulations, you're a junkie.

Just to remind you all, this game is sponsored by the U.S. army, so the over/under on lame Army commercials is like a million.

A lot of these blue-chippers will be announcing their college choices. When that happens, I'll put the contents in bold face, so you can skip over my pithy commentary and get right to the commitments, if that's your thing.
And we're off to the races! Virginia running back Ryan Williams puts on the Virginia Tech hat. Not terribly surprising that he picked his hometown school over Rutgers and Boston College.

Michigan-bound Sam McGuffie takes the opening kickoff and does not hurdle over any defenders. You can almost hear the entire crowd sigh with disappointment. Now it's time to see Notre Dame commit Dayne Crist take over the West offense. The announcers said he went to the same high school as Jimmy Clausen in the intro, but that's not correct. Hooray, fact checking!

The West drive stalls, and we have a punt and our first two Army commercials. Zing. Now it's time to see Tyrelle Pryor, the presumptive number one recruit in the universe ever. Rich Rodriguez is somewhere, salivating.

Covaughn Deboskie, RB from Arizona announces... for Cal! At least I think he did. He had his (daughter? sister?) pick a hat, so he might not have had any say in the decision. Oh well. Meanwhile, Tyrelle Pryor has scored on a nifty little read option. He's 6'6", for you keeping score at home. 7-0, East.

Army commercial count: 3.

Brandon Smith, DB from New Jersey, picks... Michigan. Good pickup for Michigan. That kid's got quite the head of hair on him. Plus, the announcers said he might play QB for Rodriguez's spread if they don't get Pryor. Hmmm.

The QB for the West is Andrew Luck, heading to Stanford. They said his dad's name is Oliver. Oliver Luck. As in, "even with Oliver Luck, she couldn't avoid the falling piano."

Army commercial count: 4

No commitments after this commercial break, they're just interviewing somebody who looks like Abe Vigoda.

Touchdown, West. Gabbert (Missouri commit) on a pretty fade to Dan Buckner. 7-7.

East QB Star Jackson (no, not Star Jones) has thrown two passes... an interception and a 50 yard touchdown. East, 14-7. And now we are treated to a Brady Quinn commercial, bringing the Notre Dame blow job level up to critical mass. Hold on tight, lads.

West is running some Emory & Henry. Notre Dame QB Dayne Crist drops the snap and it is recovered by ND DL Sean Cwynar. Notre Dame Notre Dame Notre Dame.

Marquis Gray, QB from Indiana chooses... Minnesota! Best of luck to him in the Twin Cities. A long field goal for the East has enough leg but sails wide. That was Notre Dame WR John Goodman holding. Notre Dame Notre Dame.

Sam McGuffie goes two more plays without jumping over anybody. The bloodthirsty crowd pelts the field with tomatoes and beer cans in a hail of boos.

Army commercial count: 5

Shane Hale, LB from Pennsylvania chooses... Pitt! My God, is there anything the Wannstache can't do? Nice catch! Meanwhile, West makes a field goal to pull within 14-10.

Army commercial count: 6

Gerrell Robinson, WR from Arizona chooses... Arizona State! Nooooo.... he spurns the Irish. The production crew is panicking. Shut this game down!

Army commercial count: 7
US Army All-American Bowl Liveblogging! An exhibition! Yes, the complete and utter insanity that has been the 2007 college football season continues unabated as #2 West Virginia, looking at a road to the national title game with only Pitt in the way, lost to the Panthers 13-9 on Saturday night. Pat White, pictured at right, was a one-handed spectator for the majority of the affair, but the entire West Virginia offense was in disarray, rushing for just 107 yards on 40 carries.

What's more, with Missouri's utter dismantling at the hands of OU (itself not an upset; somehow the #1 team in the land was an underdog at a neutral site), the BCS Championship Game itself is in complete chaos. And that's just par for the course in 2007.
Consider, if you will, the mood of the college football universe on the morning of January 3, 2007, after Boise State had upset Oklahoma. It seemed to be the game of the decade. Everyone thought college football had hit its apex of unpredictability, and that small-school fans would always be able to point to the Fiesta Bowl as token proof that "anything can happen."

Instead, it was just a precursor.

Indeed, if upsets were a disease, the 2007 season was in the grips of a full-blown epidemic, and Boise-OU was merely the outbreak monkey (I, by the way, can claim no credit for that term; you can thank Holly). As mind-blowing as Appalachian State-Michigan was, it was only the first of 13 games in which an unranked team would knock off a Top 5 opponent this season.

ASU-Michigan was shocking. Stanford-USC was surreal. Oregon-Arizona was downright tragic. Heck, South Florida was on both sides. But Pitt-WVU? This is full-on insane. The Wannstache isn't supposed to beat Rich Rodriguez. Not with the chance to put Pat White, Steve Slaton, and Noel Devine in the BCS Championship, whether it be to face Missouri's offense or the Ohio State defense.

So now, the pollsters find themselves in the predicament of choosing an opponent for the Buckeyes. Is it two-loss LSU, an insanely talented team that stumbled twice in triple overtime? Is it Kansas, who lost only one game but didn't even reach their conference championship? Is it Georgia, who's in the same boat as the Jayhawks but with a tougher schedule (seriously, Kansas beat nobody)? Will the computers disagree? If they do, whose fault is it?

Say what you will about the shortcomings--and there are several--of the BCS system. The sheer volume of chaos this season has caused has made 2007 the most captivating football season in recent memory. Sure, the bowls can be no less than a letdown in comparison, but any sane football fan will take an entire season of havoc over a postseason's worth.
Anarchy Reigns Supreme originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sun, 02 Dec 2007 16:40:00 EST . Every time you think you've seen it all this season, something else absolutely unbelievable happens. Tonight, the scene of the crime is Morgantown. With nothing but an anemic 4-7 Pitt team as 28 point underdogs standing between West Virginia and a berth in the title game, the Mountaineers gagged away the game in front of their home crowd.

For those of you who watched the final ten minutes of the game, it was a complete comedy of errors. Sloppy play, unbelievably terrible officiating, and a plague of locusts couldn't stop the Panthers, who hung on for dear life to a one-score lead. Certainly, a choke job for the ages.

There's a lot of subtext to the improbable conclusion of this game. Sure, Pat White was out of commission for long stretches of this game due to injury, but that hardly explains away the 28 point spread. And maybe it's just me, but it seemed pretty evident that the officials were doing everything in their power to keep Pitt from winning the game, all the way up to an eyebrow-raising excessive celebration penalty after Pitt had more or less sealed the game with the 4th down stop.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, Missouri just fell behind Oklahoma by 18 points, meaning we're heading into the second week in a row where both of the top two teams lose. I'm going to take a Dramamine and lay down. Nothing makes sense anymore.
Black is White, Up is Down, West Virginia Gags Away BCS Title Berth originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sat, 01 Dec 2007 23:11:00 EST . Everyone in the world has gone on record bad mouthing the caretakers of Heinz Field for allowing so many games to be played there in one weekend. So I'm going to skip that and just move on to something else.

It could possibly be the last regular season game that Slaton and White share the same backfield. While the rest of the offense had a huge day against UConn, Slaton was rather limited in carries and yards. And if this the last regular season game for either one or both, it would be nice to see them on a field that will contribute to their talents. Not one that will diminish them.

Pitt fans are thinking the exact opposite. And I can't blame them. Pitt has been a team that White and Slaton have feasted on over the past two seasons for 834 yards rushing. At times, it has hardly seemed fair for the Panther defense to be on the same field with White and Slaton. But if it is to be their last game together, I'd like to see a repeat of the past two years. Just so we can all marvel in their abilities that took the West Virginia program to new heights one more time.
Thankfully The Backyard Brawl is Being Played in Morgantown originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Wed, 28 Nov 2007 19:17:00 EST . The kind of hate that can only be generated through familiarity and 99 previous meetings. Pitt holds the overall record 59-37-3. It hasn't always been the big game that it is for both schools now. Penn St. was the number one rivalry for Pitt fans until the series ended with Penn State's move to the Big 10. But the hate has always been there (ht:BSPM) between the Panthers and Mountaineers.

Steelers Nation fondly remembers Jack Fleming as the radio soundtrack to a golden era. The thing was he loathed neighboring Pitt. He was the College Football Hall of Fame voice of the Mountaineers, and his gruff delivery, recognized for generations from panhandle to panhandle, was born to hate all things Panther.

"Jack Fleming's house was above the old stadium," Cook continued. "He told me, when he was a child, Pitt would come out on the field, and he would sit on his mother's lap. His mother would point down at them. And his mother would say, 'Son, that's Pitt. You hate Pitt now. You hate Pitt tomorrow. You hate Pitt until the day you die. After that, you will hate Pitt for eternity.' "

Jack was born in 1923, so the hate was started a long time ago. By the time Flemming was born West Virginia had only won twice against Pitt since 1903.

With both teams moving to more modern facilities over the past 30 years, where the fans are not packed mere feet from the playing fields, things have settled down a bit. I remember reading a story somewhere, probably on a message board, about the 1975 game. Where in the late stages of the game, the Pitt punter punting out of his own end zone was pulled into the crowd at Old Mountaineer Field. I think that's the same game that Pitt coach Johnny Majors came out on the field for pre-game with a helmet on. It's no secret that West Virginia fans liked to throw things back in those days. Thankfully, we seem to take out our pleasure and frustrations with the burning of furniture these days.

Being a Mountaineer fan, it's hard for me to speak on the hatred of the Mountaineers by Pitt fans. But I know it exists. With West Virginia having the upper hand in the past 25 years of the brawl with a 15-9-2 record, and one of the few rivalries that go back to before the formation of the Big East, it has to be a point of frustration.

For me, I think it (the hate) started with the 1978 game that I watched on TV. And seeing the scoreboard at the end of the game saying "I knew we could beat those hicks all along." As a kid, some things just stick with you. For me, that was one of those things that has never left.
Backyard Brawl Has a Rich History of Hate originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Wed, 28 Nov 2007 08:00:00 EST . While Rutgers and UConn will be played in prime time and seen by nearly no one in New Jersey or Connecticut because ESPNU is kind of not popular in those states.

Comedy of errors in the first quarter for both teams. Huge goal line stand by Syracuse in the first quarter after Pitt moved the ball from it's own 19 to the Syracuse five in 11 plays to set up 1st and goal. The Panthers promptly ran the ball four straight times for four yards and walked away with nothing. Wannstedt must be questioning if they have any plays that work in goal line situations. Truth be told, I think Collins got in on the second play and was pushed back. Spotlight on Syracuse guard Ryan Durand for being an academic All-American and Outland Trophy finalist so naturally he gets beat twice in a row for a sack. Eyes bleeding....

Pitt looked to be taking control of the game in the second quarter with a touchdown pass from Bostic to Turner and a field goal to end the first half with a 10-3 lead. But after the teams exchanged punts in the third quarter, Syracuse inserted Cameron Dantley at quarterback and it paid immediate dividends as he connected with Taj Smith for a 56 yard touchdown and the game was back up in the air. With the teams trading punt the rest of the third quarter, it really was as if no one wanted to step up and take the game until the final play of the third quarter when Aaron Berry returned a Syracuse punt 53 yards to the Orange 13 yard line. And Dave Wannstedt's prayers were answered as the Panthers scored a touchdown three plays later with a LeSean McCoy one yard run. Pitt added a field goal midway through the fourth quarter to take a 20-10 lead. Syracuse would make a late run and cut the lead to 20-17, but the ensuing onside kick bounced out of bounds and that was the game.

Sleep inducing offense combined with awful announcing made this a tough one to sit through. Pitt scratched out 294 yards while Syracuse rolled up 266. But neither team turned the ball over, and the kept the penalties to a minimum. So they got that going for them. I can only imagine what Rutgers and Connecticut would have looked like in this slot.
Pitt-Syracuse Battle for the Basement originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sat, 03 Nov 2007 13:47:00 EST . Louisville ultimately survived 24-17 to get to 5-4 and at least a chance at making a minor bowl this year.

Louisville's once fearsome offense has struggled to score. In the past three games, the Cardinals have averaged 23 points. Sloppy play and not being able to finish drives has become the standard for the Cardinals. With either Harry Douglas or Mario Urrutia available to divide the attention of secondaries in the past month, the offense has struggled.

The Louisville defense has managed to be respectable by holding opponents to just under 21 points per game. Not that they can be too cocky In the past two games, the Cardinals defense has surrendered 10 point, 4th quarter leads. This time, the offense had enough time to retake the lead and salvage the win.

Pitt came out for this game completely flat. They didn't even have 50 yards of total offense in the first half and punted six times. Despite that, the Panthers were only down 14-7 because Louisville kept making big mistakes on offense and committed a big turnover inside their own 30. Pitt converted that into a quick touchdown pass on a trick play where the TE took a pass behind the line of scrimmage and threw to a wide open running back across the field.

After three quarters, Pitt still did not have 100 yards of total offense. The fourth quarter, though, saw Pitt's phenomenal freshman tailback, LeSean McCoy explode. He started finding holes in the line and getting outside. Not to mention catching a big pass on drive as Pitt went from being down 17-7 to 17-17.

Louisville quickly answered and took a 24-17 lead with less than 2 minutes in the game. The Louisville defense, however, failed to respond. Pitt started at the 35-yard line. On 3 straight plays, McCoy went on a draw play and accumulated 45 yards and got out of bounds each time. The next play, Pitt completed a 19 yard pass to the Louisville 1. Pitt appeared poised to tied the game and probably send it to overtime.

Instead, McCoy who carried Pitt on his back the entire game, fumbled. He tried to pick his way in and Louisville LB Lamar Myles stripped the ball. Louisville recovered and was able to take a knee a few times to end the game. A bitter end for McCoy who accounted for both Pitt TDs and 180 of the 270 total yards of offense.
Louisville Wanted to Lose Less originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sat, 27 Oct 2007 18:03:00 EST . The Cincinnati Bearcats completely fell apart as they lost to Pitt 24-17. Pitt was a 9.5 home underdog and was on a 4 game losing streak. Cinci had come off a tough loss to Louisville the previous week, and looking to show that they still deserved to be a ranked team.

They didn't. Not even close. Cinci's offense got away from spread formations, option plays and no-huddle attacks. Instead they behaved like a pro style, traditional offense. It showed. They had numerous 3-and-outs. What made that so absurd was that Pitt has been at its worst on defense against the spread and the option. It's like Cinci Coach Brian Kelly wanted to prove something. What I don't know, but something was very wrong with the Cinci offense.

Cinci turned the ball over 3 times and committed a whopping 12 penalties -- a majority being false starts. The team just didn't look like it had prepared for this game. It's not like the crowd noise from the Pitt crowd was an issue with a half-filled and -- prior to the game -- despondent fan-base ready to boo.

Pitt Coach Dave Wannstedt sat up in the coaches box for the game and must have thought he was hallucinating. It was the kind of game he envisioned Pitt playing from the moment he took the job. Pitt's offense dominated time of possession by nearly 10 minutes with lots and lots of runs -- freshman sensation LeSean McCoy and junior LaRod Stephens Howling each had 100+ yards rushing. The QB managed the game with short passes, set up the run and didn't make a lot of mistakes.

On defense for Pitt, the team gave up plenty of yardage, but kept Cinci out of the endzone (albeit with lots of help from the Bearcats). It was odd to actually see Pitt blitz. That the blitzing actually worked probably shook Wannstedt up a little bit.

Cinci started the season by playing loose and fast. They were a bit reckless at times and committed penalties, but they caused more turnovers and overcame the mistakes with lots of points. Now they are still sloppy and reckless, but they aren't getting more turnovers and the offense has stalled. They have scored 28, 24 and now 17 points in the last 3 games.
Cinci Implodes at the Other River City originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sat, 20 Oct 2007 16:23:00 EST . Maybe something else. He is going to be getting around via a motorized scooter for at least the next week. Dave Wannstedt tore his Achilles tendon yesterday and had surgery on it and for good measure had arthroscopic knee surgery.

Wannstedt explained that he had partially torn his Achilles last summer and had the choice of going through rehabilitation or waiting until after the season for surgery. Compounding the situation, he injured his knee during a charity run in June and needed arthroscopic surgery.

The Achilles had been bothering Wannstedt all season and he occasionally wore a protective boot during practice. On Tuesday, while walking down the hall, he made a sudden turn and his heel ruptured. Considering he was already having one surgery, he had the knee scoped, too.

The injury puts Wannstedt up in the coaches box for this weekend's homecoming game against Cincinnati for the, ugh, "River City Rivalry" trophy (a picture can be found here). Offensive Coordinator Matt Cavanaugh will be on the sidelines in his stead.

The injury has Wannstedt joining starting WR Derek Kinder, QB Bill Stull, OT Jason Pinkston and DT Gus Mustakas on the sidelines -- all with season ending injuries. Not to mention top reserves, DE Doug Fulmer and OLs Chris Jacobson and Dan Matha.
Wannstedt Will Ride the Rascal originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Thu, 18 Oct 2007 06:39:00 EST . Unless you are a Michigan fan who has just finished watching the Appalachian State game.

College football, 2007, is basically the end of Dr. Strangelove every weekend. The last time #1 and #2 both lost on the same day, stegosaurus roamed Pangaea; normally one (or both) of the these teams would end up the Tears of Unfathomable Sadness victor, but Cal was rocking a possibly braindead backup quarterback and LSU went down to a ranked team in triple overtime; both still have good shots at the title game. No, this week we venture into the realms of offensively inept once-proud power programs done in by incompetent NFL refugees.

No, not Notre Dame. The big reveal after the jump.

It's not the Irish with the most spleen to vent this week but rather Nebraska. The 'Huskers find themselves in an unprecedented position: not only are they losing, they're getting blown out by the teams they used to run up the score against. But, hey, man, no matter. This Husker fan looks like he totally rocked out with Brady Quinn at that Poison concert, and expresses cautious optimism before the Oklahoma State game ...

... three quarters later it's 38-0. Our Poison fan returns with a few subtle differences: the Husker red has been ditched for a funereal black, the cautious optimism of the morning has been replaced with blood-boiling rage, and an economy-sized bucket of profanity must be near its expiry date:

"Oh my god, call the newspapers, THAT'S A *$#@ing ESPN SPORTS ZONE MOMENT!"

Notre Dame. Welcome back, Irish. Your TWIS reprieve was brief and, in that, unsurprising. A 27-14 loss to BC leaves ND at 1-6; their International Bowl dreams are scheduled to die next week against a suddenly mortal USC team that's still favored by 21. Irish blog Her Loyal Sons says screw it, get busy livin' or get busy dyin' and starts covering Friday Night Lights.

Meanwhile, other ND fans are making themselves feel better by muttering about how darn classless BC is and wondering if there's any point to playing those low-life private-school Jesuits:
Is there any possibility of repairing this relationship, or has that ship sailed?
The first response -- the very first -- is this:
No reason to. Nothing to gain. We win...we should win. We lose...all hell breaks lose. No one respects BC as a football school.
For the record, "all hell" has broken loose five straight times. We should be up to our necks in cats and dogs living together by now.

The message is consistent: If you can't beat 'em, complain about their fans and try to stop playin' em. On the Nation proper:
If Boston College wins, it makes their season (in their own weird pathetic way). If Notre Dame wins, so what? In most years, we should expect to pound BC like we should pound Navy, Army and Stanford. Why should we allow BC to bask in the reflected glory of Notre Dame? F--- [dashes added -ed] them. Let's kick their ass the last time we play them and be done with them. Last time pays for all. Maintainig this series only affords Fredo a facsimile of association with ND, for which they are not worthy.
Yes, ND fans call BC "Fredo" without irony. Meanwhile, the student section resorted to a "Backup College" chant on Saturday. This is what ND is reduced to: adopting the snobbish "we'll be your boss" cheers of a Northwestern or Harvard as they watch their team flail towards 3-9.

All this while Pitt had a timeout. The pass is incomplete and Navy declines; it's now fourth and two. Michigan State ultimately won the game 17-13, so the Spartan fans can be in a slightly better mood, but it shouldn't be with great enthusiasm.

The Spartans scored only 10 offensive points. All of the points came on turnovers (one taken in for a TD on an interception). Last year, the Spartan offense decimated Pitt for 38 points and over 500 total yards. The running game went for over 300 yards. This year, despite having the same running backs and 4 of the 5 starting O-linemen back, the running game only got 144 total yards. This despite new coach Mark Dantonio's emphasis on a traditional running game.

The Michigan State defense can be somewhat happy that they held Pitt to only 13 points and not even 100 yards passing. The problem is they allowed over 200 yards rushing, even as they knew Pitt was going to keep running the ball.

The worst thing for Michigan State and their fans, as the game wore on, there was less discipline and more sloppy play and penalties by the Spartans. As if the team started reverting to their default style as the game continued and stayed close. In the first two games the Spartans had only 7 penalties. This game, they had 11 penalties for 125 yards and 8 of them came in the second half.

As for Pitt...
The good news, was that Freshman RB LeSean McCoy proved that he is better than advertised with 172 rushing yards on 25 carries in his first start. The problem, was that he was the sum of the Pitt offense. Redshirt freshman QB Kevan Smith was absolutely overwhelmed in his first road start. His passes, decision making and confidence was non-existent.

How bad? Well, for most of the second half, McCoy was lining up for direct snaps and Smith was lined up on the outside. It was, according to the ESPN booth, Pitt's "Arkansas package." Apparently, the Pitt coaches had an idea of how special a player they had in McCoy and went down to Arkansas to pick Houston Nutt's brain on how they used Darren McFadden. (In something totally unrelated, I guess, Arkansas just hired away Pitt's AD.) McCoy never passed. He either ran or handed off on a sweep or end-around to T.J. Porter. The only reason Smith was actually in the game was to read the play signals for the plays.

Despite the lack of a QB Pitt had a chance because the defense played very well (and MSU committed key boneheaded penalties to kill drives).
Nobody Happy After Pitt-Michigan State originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sat, 15 Sep 2007 17:25:00 EST . Seriously. Jumpin' Jehosephat:

Louisville safety Latarrius Thomas will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, and coach Steve Kragthorpe said on Monday that the sophomore will likely apply for a medical redshirt.
(More like "first degree burns" after Louisville gave up 42 to Middle Tennessee State, which isn't even a directional school. It's a non-directional school.)

Also:

Pitt defensive tackle Gus Mustakas will miss the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, leaving the Panthers without their top defensive lineman.
Yikes. Pitt's run defense has been awful of late. This won't help.

Also:

Kansas State linebacker Antwon Moore is out for the season with an undisclosed injury.

The 5-foot-10, 210-pound junior appeared to hurt his left knee while sacking San Jose State quarterback Adam Tafralis during the Wildcats' 34-14 victory Saturday. Tafralis came down awkwardly on Moore's left leg, and Moore lay on the field for a few minutes before being helped off.

Hey, a 5'10" linebacker! Cool. He can hang out with Chris Graham and maybe give him some pointers about how not to lose to a designated cupcake.

Also:

Tennessee cornerback Antonio Gaines will miss the rest of the season after sustaining a torn knee ligament against Southern Mississippi.

The redshirt senior will undergo surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament but a date has not been set, team athletic trainer Jason McVeigh said.

This is very bad for a Tennessee secondary that looked shaky going into the season and is already starting freshman Eric Berry. Phil Fulmer may be joining Carr on the foregone conclusion seat sooner rather than later.
CFB Injury Report: Everyone Out For Year originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Tue, 11 Sep 2007 13:59:00 EST .
