Problem was, Cal hadn't recruited him. Neither had any other schools. That prompted an investigation and the involvement of law enforcement.

The story soon centered around a mysterious recruiter who allegedly duped the poor high school senior.

Turns out we were all duped. SportsByBrooks is reporting (via the Reno Gazette-Journal) that Kevin Hart has admitted making it all up.

"I wanted to play D-I ball more than anything. When I realized that wasn't going to happen, I made up what I wanted to be reality. I am sorry for disappointing and embarrassing my family, coaches, Fernley High School, the involved universities and reporters covering the story."

Now the school district "continues to conduct its internal investigation into how so many people were duped by the high school senior."

I betcha that'll look good on his transcripts.

Nevada then let the clock tick down before calling one of those much-criticized last-moment timeouts just as Hawaii lined up for the kick. Not that it counted, but the kicker nailed it much as he had when he hit the game-tying field goal on the road against Louisiana Tech.

That no worries Island spirit took over on the next try as he absolutely drilled his effort. The kick soared into the sky and smoked right through the middle of the goalposts to give the Warriors a 28-26 victory.

Equally impressive, Hawaii played nearly the entire game without injured quarterback Colt Brennan. Backup Tyler Graunke who has experience aplenty was efficient and reliable as Nevada kept the scoring down with keepaway, time-consuming football.

An upset would be a sexy story, but kickers who actually do their job in pressure situations deserve some attention when you don't get the upset. Sooooo, say hello to 10-0 Hawaii while I say hello to a few hours of sleep before I get up and do this again for 16+ hours starting later this morning.
Hawaii's Kicker Is Money originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sat, 17 Nov 2007 02:55:00 EST . While neither Northwestern nor Minnesota are expected to contend for the Big Ten crown, their ability to pull out wins does help a beleagured conference save some face.

(In fact, the Big Ten is 5-0 so far today. Choke on that, Michigan. On second thought, don't choke on that. Win, for crying out loud.)

Both games were dramatic, and both featured super comebacks. In Northwestern's case, it was Northwestern's comeback. In Minnesota's, it was opponent Miami (Ohio) who pulled off the great comeback.

Minnesota led all day against Miami. They scored on their opening drive, opened a 14-3 lead in the second quarter, and then responded to nine straight Miami points with two touchdowns in a row to take a 28-12 lead in the fourth quarter. Game over, right?

Nope.

Miami rallied behind backup quarterback Daniel Raudabaugh, scoring 16 straight points to force overtime, then scoring first in overtime. The RedHawks wouldn't score again, as they missed a potential game-winning field goal in the second overtime, and Raudabaugh was intercepted in the end zone in the third overtime.

After a missed field goal of their own in the second OT, Amir Pinnix scored in the third extra session to give the Gophers a 41-35 win. It's the first win of the season for the Gophers, and the first win of Tim Brewster's head coaching career.

Meanwhile, Northwestern trailed almost all day against Nevada. The Wildcats were down 24-10 at halftime. To make matters worse, star RB Tyrell Sutton had to leave the game with an ankle injury. His replacement, Brandon Roberson, ran for a short touchdown in the third quarter, then C.J. Bacher threw a touchdown pass early in the fourth to give Northwestern a 27-24 lead.

Nevada had an answer, as Luke Lippincott ran for a touchdown to give them the lead back at 31-27. When Northwestern was stopped on a fourth-and-short with just over 2:00 left, this game looked over. Nope.

A penalty slowed Nevada's drive, and they went three-and-out. Northwestern got the ball back at their own 20 with 1:21 left. Bacher then led one of the best drives of his Wildcat career, taking the team 80 yards in six plays. Bacher was three for four passing for 45 yards on the drive, and also chipped in two runs for 35 yards. He hit Ross Lane for the go-ahead touchdown. The Wildcats tacked on a safety on the game's final play to provide them with the final 36-31 margin.

The Wildcats were outgained 541-431, allowed 30 Nevada first downs while getting just 18 of their own, had the ball for only 25:00 and change, but won thanks in part to two Nevada turnovers and a great second-half comeback.
Dramatic Finishes in Big Ten; Northwestern Wins, Minnesota Survives 3OT Thriller originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sat, 08 Sep 2007 18:00:00 EST . Miami seemed to dominate, but the offense managed to put points on both parts of the scoreboard. It's going to be a long game for the Miami defense.

The first shot of Miami DC, soon to be HC, Randy Shannon. Surprised it took this long for the first shot.

Nevada 3d possession: Nevada goes 3 and out. It's all going to be on the Miami defense to win this game.

Miami 3d possession: Starting on their own 24. Freeman on the play fake threw a beauty that bounced right off of Leggett's facemask. It sproinged in the air for a few seconds before falling harmlessly. 3 and out for Miami.

Feel the excitement that is the MPC Computers Bowl.

Nevada 4th possession: Big punt puts Nevada at their own 32.

Miami helps Nevada's slow offense, with a late hit on QB Jeff Rowe running out of bounds.

Randy Phillips nearly picked off the pass when Rowe rolled out. Miami's defense is the best unit in this game. Nevada's offense can't do anything against them.

Nevada gets a gift with a pass interference call against Brandon Merriweather. The ball looked uncatchable, but the officials seemed to decide Merriweather cut off the route. Bad call.

Nevada still can't do anything. 3d and long and Rowe is sacked to make it punting time.

Fair caught at the 11.

7-2 Miami, 8:24 left in the half.
Miami 4th possession: Miami's offense after that opening drive has reverted to normal. Doesn't matter who the QB is when the O-line can't help. Seriously, if you have any decent players up front, there is no reason for defenses not to be able to get penetration and blitz like crazy against Miami.

Freeman naturally goes deep to Moore for 44 yards.

And then the Wolpack gets an interception. Hurricane offense -- it has to be said -- blows.

Nevada 5th possession: Time to see if this popgun pistol offense can get more than 20 yards in a single possession. Jeff Rowe is out. Nick Graziano is in for the time being. They pick up about 11 yards on the first play.

Rowe back in, and a shovel pass goes for 13 yards to get Nevada to the Miami 27.

Great TD pass from Rowe, plus Miami holding. Naturally declined.

Nevada takes a time out as they consider going for 2. They really have to. The Wolfpack offense can't afford not to try for as many points as possible.

The 2-point conversion failed, but it was definitely the right call. This is going to be a low scoring game, and you need to take chances.

8-7 Nevada, 3:37 left in the half.

Miami 5th possession: Javarris James makes a nice run for 12 yards. That's followed by another James run along the other sideline for 11 yards. 3d time wasn't a charm as he was stuffed for a 2 yard loss.

Wow. Ryan Moore catches the 52 yarder -- Moore shoved Joe Garcia, the defender, to the ground for no call -- and the TD. David Norrie sagely observes, Moore got away with one. That was the opeing Dave Jones needed to mention Moore's, um, legal issues and recently being reinstated to the team. No, I didn't notice the irony.

14-8 Miami, 1:46 left in the half

Nevada 6th possession: Starting at their own 36. Somehow Rowe got that shovel pass away as two Miami players were converging, and another bit rather than staying with the receier. Nice 18 yard gain.

A screen to Hubbard goes for 12 yards. Another screen to Hubbard goes for 12 more yards to the Miami 20 with 22 seconds.

oooh. Kenny Phillips for Miami nearlyt had the pick at the 3. Short pass for 4 yards, and gets out of bounds by the TE. Nothing doing on 3d down. Nevada settling for the 33-yard FG attempt.

The FG is good. 14-11 Miami with 5 seconds left.

Bruce Johnson has a nice return, but unless he took it to the house it was meaningless.

Larry Coker to Heather Cox, let's just say he declined comment on how he is "handling his last game for Miami."

Man, the MPC Bowl does not look well populated. I didn't realize until they were forced into a wide-shot on kick-off. Looks like the interest in Boise just may not be there.
MPC Computers Liveblog: Second Quarter originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sun, 31 Dec 2006 20:46:00 EST . When it's the end of December and some guy in Cleveland is making fun of the temperature, you know that things are weird.

It's the Nevada Wolfpack versus the Miami (FL) Hurricanes. Larry Coker's last game as the Miami head coach. Randy Shannon's last game as the Miami defensive coordinator before he takes over the head coaching duties. Lots of awkward moments expected -- with the obligatory cutaway camera shots to the two. Expect also gushy sideline reports about how little friction or discomfort has been occurring with the transition. Sure. No awkwardness.

Oh, yeah. There is another team at this bowl. I'll get back to you on that.

Mark Jones with the play-calling, David Norrie on color and Heather Cox swaddled on the sidelines.

Nevada 1st possession: Miami won the toss and deferred to the second half. Touchback.

In the Nevada intros, there are just way too many references to the pistol offense. I keep thinking popgun and really bad erectile dysfunction jokes.

Devin Hester, now of the Chicago Bears, does the Hurricane defense intros. Surprisingly, he didn't add, "I used to smoke all these guys in practice."

The MPC Computers CEO commercial featured their CEO bundled in the cold, pretending he knew what he was doing in front of a grill at a tailgate. Bonus points for conceding that the bowl was known as "that bowl game played on the blue turf." Negative points for the poor graphics to show the teams playing with bad "swooshing special effects" and doing nothing to actually make me consider purchasing a new computer from them.

Nevada has picked up a couple first downs with a mix of short passes and runs. Miami with a huge sack to make it 3d and 22. Shovel pass gets 12 back. Time for the Wolfpack to punt.

Fair caught at the Miami 30.

Miami 1st possession: Kriby Freeman gets the start. They are attributing it to Kyle Wright's broken thumb. Given how sloppy Freeman is with the ball, it's hard to say who would be worse.

A couple first downs, and Miami is already at the Nevada 40.

Man, the Miami players are bundled on the field. Turtlenecks, baclavas, tights, gloves. There seems little inclination for the players to expose much flesh to the cold. Hard to complain, since the Hurricanes are steadily moving at will on the Wolfpack -- with the short pass. The run isn't doing much, but short passes to the sidelines are picking up 6-10 yards per.

Javarris James -- have you heard, he's related to Edgerrin James -- gets it to the 5 for 1st and goal. On 3d and goal, Freeman keeps to give Miami the TD.

7-0 Miami 4:20 in the first quarter.
Nevada second possession: Nevada starts at the 20. Hubbard takes the carry for 17 yards. Nevada stalls out and punts.

Bruce Johnson fumbles the ball. Then the refs change their mind and say his forward progress was stopped before he was stripped. questionable, to say the least. Under review. The call goes for Miami. They get to start at their own 12.

Miami second possession: The refs mics aren't working in the cold, making the whole thing like an old Chevy Chase SNL sketch when they have to speak.

Well, that's more like Miami all season. 3-and-out. On top of that, Freeman whistled for intentional grounding -- from the endzone.

7-2 Miami, 5 seconds left in the quarter.

Miami gets to kickoff from their own 20. Wilson goes from his own t3n to the 37 to end the 1st quarter.
MPC Computers Bowl Liveblog: 1st Quarter originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sun, 31 Dec 2006 19:35:00 EST . The only good win in the conference was beating San Jose St. Otherwise, no good wins in or out of conference (unless you count beating Northwestern). The Wolfpack has a run-heavy offense, with about 177 yards/game on the ground. QB Jeff Rowe doesn't throw often (19.6 passing attempts/game) but has a 65% completion rate. Nevada has a decent defense, but nothing spectacular.

How Miami got here:
Oh, where to begin. The Hurricanes finished 9th in the ACC. On offense the problems started up front with a bad offensive line that has killed them all season. RB Javarris James finally emerged from a large but disappointing group of running backs. The defense has kept Miami in many of the games, but the inability to score points has been the big problem.

What you absolutely have to know about Nevada:
This is Nevada, not UNLV. The Nevada Wolfpack is based in Reno. The Cattlemen's update is next week, focusing on low stress cattle handling. Their Hydrologic Science graduate school is one of the largest and best in the country.

What you absolutely have to know about Miami:
The University of Miami is the largest private employer in Miami-Dade County (what that says about private business in the area is a different issue). Given that it is Miami, the school has a page for "emergency preparedness" and a disaster preparation and recovery plan (PDF).

What you absolutely have to know about this bowl game:
Since a computer maker is sponsoring the bowl, they are offering a 7% discount on their computers. Of course, they are overpriced and the sale hardly is an improvement (though if they want to offer me a free laptop to to show why they are worth it, I'll listen).

Why to watch:
It's the last bowl game for 2006. It's the only bowl game of the whole day, plus it's the blue turf.

Most important, it's Miami having to go to Boise. The Hurricanes sent to a cold-weather bowl is awesome. If the point that it's expected to be cold, consider what the gift pack included:

o.	Winter gloves and hand warmers
o.	Winter skull cap with logo
o.	Weatherproof parka with logo

Yeah, that drives the point home.

This bowl game is all about Miami. No offense to Nevada, but the interest for this game, the storylines, are all Miami. Larry Coker's final game as coach. His Defensive Coordinator taking over as soon as this game is done.

Score Prediction:
Nevada 25 Miami 18
MPC Computers Bowl Preview: Nevada vs. Miami originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sat, 30 Dec 2006 15:06:00 EST . I'm going to do my best to restrain my hysteria and cover the action between the #3 and #7 teams in the Western Athletic Conference.

For those out you outside the Western region wondering to yourself, "Why is he liveblogging THAT game?" -- this is what ABC is giving us here in Los Angeles for local coverage today. Instead of waking up to Texas-Nebraska, we were able to enjoy Dora the Explorer and The Suite Life with Zach & Cody, so that ABC could bring us this riveting matchup. That's how we roll. Bet you're jealous.

So I'll be liveblogging the action straight from ABC's sterling coverage, for all those of you who had the misfortune of watching the Longhorns and 'Huskers in Lincoln this morning instead of the Wolfpack and Spartans in Reno this afternoon:

1st Quarter:

Wow, they're making Dan Fouts do this game. He cannot have been happy when he got that assignment. What do you want to bet he negotiates a clause in his next contract to not have to call any WAC games, ever again?

The Wolfpack strike first blood. If a pack of wolves fought some spartans in real life, who do you think would win? If the wolves are hungry, I'm going with the pack.

They check in with Boise State/Idaho -- and Idaho's turf is a bright green I've never seen before. So apparently this is the "Battle of the Funky Turf Teams". The winner gets a trophy made of multicolored astroturf. (I joke, but honestly, I think I'd rather be watching that game.)

2nd Quarter

Did Dick Tomey just say this was a big game in the national picture? Only because ABC's west coast programming has a serious axe to grind with Texas and/or Nebraska. San Jose State's in the national picture like Claire's baby is the star of Lost.

I wonder if the players of San Jose State were lucky enough to catch The Chipper Lowell Experience while they were in Reno. It's actually all the way up in South Lake Tahoe, but if you like hijinx and hilarity brother, let me tell you, it's the show for you.

Did Fouts just say "I'm told by Cliff Claven" when he dropped the tank knowledge? Was that really a seamless Cheers allusion from Foutsy? Must have picked up the witty cultural references from his year working with Dennis Miller on MNF.

My friend calls and asks what I'm doing -- I tell him and he laughs at me for a minute, before asking "No, seriously?"

The Spartan QB (I'm not taking the time to learn everyone's name, especially if they keep stinking this bad) just threw a 2-yard screen pass about 5 yards over the head of his receiver. What was Dick Tomey saying about the national picture?

You know, the more I think about this, the more it's really starting to bother me -- the NCAA changes rules to make the televised game more accessible to all fans, and then they turn around and allow crap like this to happen. Let me make something totally clear to the NCAA and ABC and the rules committees and sub-committees and ad wizards who come up with these things -- if the games are like Nebraska-Texas, they can be 6 hours and we'll watch. If they're Nevada-San Jose State, the pregame intro is more than enough.

So ok, I've been thinking -- if this game turns into a blowout, is there anything else ABC can switch over to? I mean, if I at least have the prospect of a few minutes of a better game, that might give me something to cheer for.

Interesting sidenote about these new Outback commercials with the poppy song -- the indie band Of Montreal took selling out to a new level with that one, by not just selling their song for commercial use, but re-writing the lyric "Let's pretend we don't exist" to "Let's go Outback tonight." Hope they got quite a few Bloomin' Onions for that one.

Oh no, they're back to the action -- hope I didn't miss anything with my momentary pitchforking.

Phew....I didn't.

I just remembered all the great golfing in Tahoe -- I'm sure that's the big incentive; heck, that might even be the reason why they're covering this one. "Well, we could send you guys to Pullman this week -- or you could go to Reno, and we'll put you up in Tahoe." 10 minutes later, tee times had been booked.

Ok, they just gave us a stat that may have put me over the top -- San Jose State hasn't won in their last 15 road games. So we have a TERRIBLE road team, playing on the road against the dregs of the conference. And this took precedent over Nebraska-Texas why exactly? Before I was irritated, now I think I might go down to ABC's LA offices and demand answers.

Halftime
Pretty exciting first half. I need to get some Gatorade, replenish my electrolytes. While I do, let's check in with Dennis Green, see if he has anything to add:

Third Quarter

Ok, we're back to Reno. Rumor has it Lt. Dangle might make a second-half cameo. Keep your eyes out for that one.

In case I didn't mention it, I am definitely rooting for the Wolfpack -- just so I can hear that wolf sound effect they play after a score as much as possible over the next hour and a half. I'm pretty sure they ripped it straight from the background track on "Monster Mash." Although it might have been "Halloween Shindig" or "Dracula's Pajama Party."

SportsCenter InGame! Alright!!! What's up Matt Weiner?

Hawaii-New Mexico State -- another game we'd rather be watching right now. Colt Brennan, representing for the OC. Far more interesting than this.

Speaking of The OC, I've been fortunate enough to score a sneak peak at the first episodes of the new season, and I am happy to report the show is back to its original sweet spot -- off-the-charts of Simmons' Unintentional Comedy Scale. All I need to say about the first episode is three words: "underground cage fighting" and the second episode can actually be summed up likewise: "Steve-O in Mexico." Yep, seriously.

Sure, it's only 17-7 and some might call that a "good game", but after seeing plenty of good football today (Nebraska-Texas at a sports bar, Notre Dame-UCLA, Washington-Cal), I just realized that I have the option of watching this week's episode of The Office on TiVo. But I know, we've grown very close during my time here (spending time under duress together has a tendency to do that), so I will go ahead and liveblog the episode of The Office for you too, so we don't have to say our goodbyes too quickly (and to hopefully cleanse the palette after subjecting you to Spartans/Wolfpack)...

The Office -- Episode #34 "The Initiation"

You've gotta love Dwight's barrage of brain teasers for Ryan in the opening....classic.

"Jan used to treat Michael like a 10-year old, but lately it's like he's 5."

Does anybody know what song Dwight is blaring in his car as he drives thru the beet field? It sounds a little like Danzig, but I'm pretty sure that's not it.

You guys all know that the "new Pam" is played by Quincy Jones' daughter, right? I like that fact, b/c it ties The Office to Arrested Development in an oddball sort of way.

Stanley's love of pretzel day may be the funniest thing in the episode. We've never seen him half this animated over anything -- but the man loves his free soft pretzels. And somehow that makes him more real/funny/believable. Genius.

What's everyone's take on Heroes? I've only seen one episode, but it kind of seemed like a lamer, more comic-booky version of Lost. But that's what everyone who only watches a little bit says. For anyone who's given it more of a chance -- is it for real?

"Welcome....to SCHRUTE BARN!!!"

The Sixpence None the Richer reference demonstrates that these guys are just working on another level right now. Clearly the cast/writing staff/producers are clicking like the Trojans in 2004 or the Steelers down the stretch last year.

I really wish they would have shown Michael's pretzel, once it had "the works" on it. It sounds delicious.

"What is the Dharma Initiative?"

Dwight's cousin Mose, with the big red "FEAR" across his chest and the chinstrap Amish beard is EXACTLY what's Dwight's cousin Mose should look and sound like. Again -- like Leinart to Steve Smith, making it look easy.

Do you think Michael (a) has "Rock n' Roll, Part II" by Gary Glitter on a CD (Jock Jams, perhaps?), (b) bought it from the iTunes Music Store, (c) downloaded it illegally?
