Wildcat fans are scattered from Garden City to Kansas City, and all will be paying a much higher price for weekend road trips.

"Any school that has a relatively small population and is not on the cusp of a metropolitan area, it's bound to have an impact," [Kansas State Deputy Athletic Director Jim] Epps said.

The greatest impact might be yet to come. While many fans seem willing to bite the bullet this season, that could change if gas prices climb even higher next summer.

For Zack McNett, it might mean giving up the football road trips altogether.

"It's a legitimate possibility," he said. "I'd probably just pay $50 to get all the channels and try to pick up as many games as I could on television."

How much of this is just water cooler talk about the economy and how much will actually be realized at the stadium and at the cash register I don't know. I have a feeling that unless gas prices really soar (like, $10/gallon soar), the impact won't match the worry generated by scary headlines. That isn't to say the impact of rising gas prices isn't being felt.

College football fans are, overall, an intensely devoted group and if you ask around will find that most of those who attend games spend a great deal of money in doing so. You're talking multiple season tickets, travel, food for tailgating, tailgating equipment, memorabilia, maybe travel to a road or bowl game, and so on. But they're also people in a position to do so, as college football fandom is a self-selecting phenomena. I'm not sure fuel prices by themselves are a dealbreaker for the vast majority of fans on whether to attend a game or not.

Maybe I'm off here, but in the narrow context of fans attending games, I'm not too worried for college football. Yes, everyone's going to be much more careful with their spending, but I think most fans tend to budget a surprisingly good amount of money already on attending games. The savings may simply come from cutting back on some souvenirs, or hawking that extra ticket instead of giving it to a friend. Butts should still be in the seats come September.

Now, as noted in the article, university teams all travel so there will be changes. Kansas State may take a few more chartered bus trips instead of hopping on chartered planes, at least with its smaller sports programs. Maybe other college football programs follow suit, I don't know. Certainly spending will be more scrutinized and the bottom line marginalized, which may be a good thing if you're one of the critics of big spending in college sports. A little fiscal discipline never hurt anyone, or so it would seem.

Update: Yup. Sports attendance up, hot dog spending down.
Will Gas Prices Affect College Football? originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sun, 29 Jun 2008 14:42:00 EST . But one agenda item that he is pushing strongly is a fifth year of eligibility for football players. He hopes the proposed change will get some attention from the NCAA rules committee.

The proposal for a fifth year of eligibility would eliminate redshirting, instead giving college football players five years to compete on the field. Under current rules, players have a five-year window in which to complete four years of playing time. This isn't the first time this change has come up, but opponents have argued that eligibility rules need to standard across sports. Big 12 commissioner Beebe, disagrees.
Beebe, however, said he thinks football should be seen as unique because it has a high rate of redshirts and injuries.

"Injuries happen and coaches have players who could contribute, but they don't want to play someone on a limited basis and burn a redshirt year," Beebe said. "And you have kids during their redshirt year who are getting the heck beat out of them in practice every day with no hope of playing."
The rule change would certainly eliminate the need for coaches to agonize about redshirting decisions. In addition, it would seemingly end the need for athletes and schools to file medical hardships in the wake of injuries. Lastly, given that the average college football player takes around 4.7 years to graduate, the five-year eligibility window could help improve graduation rates.
Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe Pushing for Fifth Year of Eligibility originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Wed, 21 May 2008 11:35:00 EST . The Nagurski Trophy is presented annually to the best defensive player in college football and is sponsored by the Charlotte Touchdown Club.

According to the press release:
"The Charlotte Touchdown Club will hold the 2008 banquet on Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte. For the eighth straight season, the FWAA will also pick a Bronko Nagurski Defensive Player of the Week beginning with games on Aug. 30 and running through the middle of November. And a Bronko Nagurski Legends Award winner will also be selected from the FWAA's 1967 All-America team.

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy has been presented since 1993 and is awarded in memory of the legendary Nagurski, a former All-America lineman at Minnesota in 1927-29 and a star for professional football's Chicago Bears in the 1930s."
This year's watch list includes eight players from Big 12 schools, led by Oklahoma, which places three Sooners on the list. The Big 12 players on the Nagurski Watch List are:

George Hypolite, Colorado

Joe Mortensen, Kansas

Ian Campbell, Kansas State (pictured at right)

William Moore, Missouri

Sean Weatherspoon, Missouri

Auston English, Oklahoma

DeMarcus Granger, Oklahoma

Nic Harris, Oklahoma

Since its inception in 1993, three Big 12 players have won the Nagurski Trophy. Oklahoma defensive back Roy Williams took home the award in 2001. The Big 12 then had back-to-back winners in 2003 and 2004 in Oklahoma's Derrick Strait and Derrick Johnson from Texas.
Eight Big 12 Defenders Placed On Nagurski Watch List originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Tue, 13 May 2008 14:43:00 EST . McGhee was first identified by a liquor store employee as a suspect in the theft of $300 worth of alcohol. When police stopped his vehicle a short time later, they also found four laptop computers that had been stolen from the university.

That's a rough day, already, but according to the official police report the charges for McGhee weren't over yet:
"McGhee was arrested for theft, possession of stolen property, minor in possession of alcohol and possession of marijuana. He was released on $3,000 bond."
Not bad for one night's work. McGhee appeared in three games and made four tackles as a redshirt freshman, but was expected to contribute more in 2008. The site KstateFootball.com notes that:
"[McGhee] Closed his spring as one of the leaders on the Purple defense in the spring game, i.e., tied for most in solo tackles (4) and total tackles (5)."

Kansas State Linebacker Arrested and Suspended Indefinitely originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Mon, 12 May 2008 12:19:00 EST . Pelini, however, appears to be ramping up the accountability for student-athletes. And it's hard to argue with Pelini's bottom-line:
"It's not up for debate," Pelini said. "If you don't want to go to class, turn pro."
Meanwhile at Kansas State, Ron Prince is scheduling practices around his players' class schedules, which means the workouts kickoff at 8:20 p.m.
"Nowadays, most of them don't go to bed until midnight anyway," Prince said. "We just figured this would be the best way to let them keep their schoolwork up while they were practicing. I'm as confirmed as anybody that they are in school to get their degrees."
The change in schedules has been an adjustment for the players, but they seem to understand Prince's reasoning.
"I don't particularly like this, but it's being done for the betterment of the team," Freeman said. "We're working out at night, which is a time you might normally want to relax after school and practice. But it's kind of a blessing. We don't have anything going on during the afternoon, so I either kick back or do my papers then."
Both coaches should be applauded for their efforts at increasing the emphasis their players place on academics. While the spring semester is often a time that football players use to catch up in the classroom after grueling fall semesters, the added push from their coaches can only help.
Big 12 Coaches Stressing Importance of the Classroom This Spring originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Mon, 14 Apr 2008 21:20:00 EST . It appears so, as the Wildcats recently announced their own intentions to utilize a hurry-up attack in 2008.
"We're practicing no-huddle," wide receiver Ernie Pierce said. "As far as the offense, it's the same. We just gave it a new name and a different type of feel to it. I would say either 100 or 95 percent, we'll be no-huddle."

"We want to play fast," Pierce said. "We want to put teams in a panic."
I guess I underestimated the speed with which this type of offensive system would spread. As it stands right now, six teams in the Big 12 - Colorado, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Texas Tech and Oklahoma - will be using some type of no-huddle system this season. Given that, one has to begin to wonder about the law of diminishing returns. Especially when Big 12 defensive coordinators will essentially be preparing for the speedier offensive approaches on a weekly basis. At some point, it would seem, that advantage would be lost.

You can't mention Kansas State move to the no-huddle without mentioning the success their rival Kansas had a year ago. Head coach Ron Prince thinks he has players with similar abilities, especially at the quarterback position.
"I think Josh [Freeman] is capable of expanding his package once again," Prince said. "The scheme is largely quarterback-driven. The kid over at KU, Todd Reesing, it's the same way - it's quarterback driven.
Right, because the only differences between Josh Freeman (pictured at right) and Reesing are about eight inches of height and a good 50 pounds. And speaking of which, if the Wildcats no-huddle attack is going to flourish fans better hope Freeman's off-season conditioning habits have improved.
Et Tu, Kansas State? originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sun, 13 Apr 2008 15:24:00 EST . KSU has dropped Fresno State from its 2008 schedule and replaced it with powerhouse Montana State. Kansas State will pay Fresno State $250,000 as part of a buyout agreement.

This is a quick reversal in philosophies for Prince and Kansas State. A year ago at this time, Prince was championing the tough schedules facing KSU in the future and encouraging a move away from previous head coach Bill Snyder's cupcake-laden slates. At that time, he was quoted as saying:
"Where we are in the development of our team and our program, I think having the opportunity to go play those kind of opponents [Auburn and Fresno State] will do nothing but benefit us," coach Ron Prince said Monday.
I suppose the fact that the Wildcats finished 5-7 a year ago, while Fresno State was 9-4 in 2007 might have had something to do with Prince's flip-flop.

On the other end of the deal, Fresno State has added Rutgers to their schedule to replace Kansas State. That move should surprise few. Pat Hill and the Bulldogs have always had the attitude of "any team, any time, anywhere." In fact this isn't the first time that an opponent has backed out of a game against Fresno State.
Hill is used to foes dropping him. Earlier this decade, he saw Oklahoma State and Texas Tech duck out of visits to Fresno. The inability to get opponents to come to his turf has led to Hill's team getting just five home games this fall.

Ron Prince Gets His Bill Snyder On originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Wed, 02 Apr 2008 07:28:00 EST . Overall his numbers were in line with most other performances this year. He connected on 28 of 41 passes (.683) for 284 yards. Happiest for his coaches, it was mistake-free football as Daniel did not fumble or toss an interception.

Daniel's highlight show play will be his scrambling, broken-play 44-yard touchdown pass to frosh star Jeremy Maclin who snuck behind the defense and was wide open in the back of the end zone.

And as for that Maclin guy? He's special. Special enough to be a Heisman Trophy candidate starting next year after breaking the NCAA freshman all-purpose yardage mark in the first quarter today. On the day he was no slouch in recording 361 all-purpose yards (8 rushing, 144 receiving, 16 punt returns and 193 kick returns) and three touchdowns (8 yards, 44 yards, 99 yards).
Saturday Heisman Performances: Missouri Quarterback Chase Daniel originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sat, 17 Nov 2007 16:48:00 EST . I don't know.

After last week's amazing 76-39 thrashing at the hands of Kansas, the Nebraska Cornhuskers returned home to Lincoln today to take out their frustrations on Kansas State.

And boy did they ever take out their frustrations.

Joe Ganz threw for 510 yards and seven touchdowns today as Nebraska thrashed Kansas State 73-31 in Lincoln.

I noted last week that Kansas coach Mark Mangino didn't shy away from driving the score up a little bit in last week's game. Well, Bill Callahan didn't call off the dogs, so to speak, in today's game.

Ganz was in the game throwing passes on four consecutive plays in the fourth quarter of a 59-17 game. He ended up throwing his seventh score of the game to make it 66-17 before he left the game.

In this case, it's a bit less ridiculous to leave a starter in. Nebraska is not likely to end up bowl-eligible, and it's certainly not going to be a major bowl trip if they are. Callahan is probably out of a job after the season no matter what.

But I wouldn't want to be Missouri. The Tigers visit Manhattan next week to play Kansas State. We'll see if K-State can keep the pattern going.
Callahan Knows Belichick, Too originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sat, 10 Nov 2007 16:33:00 EST . Now news emerges of possible rules violations that have prompted an NCAA investigation.
Athletic director Tim Weiser said Tuesday the Big 12 school reported the violations to the governing body. He said the investigation centers around one former university employee, three former football players and two current members of the team.

"To this point there is no evidence that any member of the coaching staff, support staff or representatives of our athletics interests are involved," Weiser said.

"We have never, nor will we ever, tolerate intentional violations of NCAA rules," Weiser said. "Should it be determined that violations have occurred, we will take whatever steps necessary to ensure that we maintain the highest standard for compliance."
It seems you never can tell when the NCAA comes calling regarding possible violations. Often when things look bad, you walk away with only a wrist slap (see Sooners, Oklahoma). Other seemingly more minor violations seem to invoke the hammer from the NCAA investigators. The fact that the violations were self-reported and also involve an employee that is no longer with the school should help KSU's chances. But I've certainly been wrong before, so stay tuned for updates.
Kansas State Facing Possible NCAA Violations originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Tue, 09 Oct 2007 16:14:00 EST . I watch a hell of a lot of football on Saturdays and KU/KSU wasn't high on my morning radar. The man beating him on the route and burning him afterwards is KSU receiver Jordy Nelson, little-known outside the Big 12.

YouTubesDay: How to Beat a First-Round Corner originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Tue, 09 Oct 2007 11:23:00 EST . Just like that, the Big 12 North got a lot more intriguing.

The Jayhawks were sharp running the ball behind the shifty Jake Sharp and quarterback Todd Reesing tossed three touchdowns. His three interceptions frustrated an otherwise productive day on offense, but Kansas State quarterback Josh Freeman tossed three picks himself.

The difference today was Kansas' more balanced offensive attack. They were able to run the ball, and stopped the Kansas State run.

A late interception led to a field goal and a 30-24 lead. Kansas State rallied into Jayhawk territory with under a minute left but Freeman tossed his final interception on 4th down to ice the game.
Kansas Ain't Bad originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sat, 06 Oct 2007 15:50:00 EST . Fresh off two key upsets of Big 12 South powers, Colorado and Kansas State have become instant contenders in a division that many had already conceded to either Nebraska or Missouri. That says a lot about both teams and the coaches that have come in changed the attitudes of their players. It also says a lot about what this division might be capable of in the future.

That brings us to this upcoming weekend, which could go a long ways toward deciding the fate of the Big 12 North. The game a lot of us thought would dictate which team would head to San Antonio in December takes place in Columbia, Missouri as the Tigers take on Nebraska. Nebraska's had a contentious season thus far, giving up yards by the bushel, and relying on the suddenly reliable Sam Keller to bail them out of trouble. That doesn't exactly seem like a recipe for future success. Missouri's defense has also been spotty, but the Tigers have the better resume with a win against Ron Zook's surging Illinois team (did I just write that?). They also possess a high-powered offense commanded by Chase Daniel who has a number of receiving targets to challenge the Blackshirts in Chase Coffman, Martin Rucker and Jeremy Maclin. Missouri should also benefit from a home crowd that's been waiting to pounce on Nebraska for decades and a nighttime kickoff that will leave ensure a well-lubricated Tiger contingent. I hate to say it, but I think the Tigers avenge the upset that wasn't ten years ago and take control of their fate for the rest of the season.

In Manhattan, Ron Prince's Kansas State team will look to avoid a post-Texas letdown as they host in-state rival Kansas. Kansas is amongst the nation's leaders in just about every statistical category in 2007. Unfortunately, they have yet to play anyone of substance meaning their numbers are more inflated than head coach Mark Mangino's cholesterol levels. I'm anxious to see how they stack up with a team like KSU. Meanwhile, the Wildcats have proven that they own Mack Brown and Texas. Their strategy of disemboweling Colt McCoy on an annual basis should be applauded. Unfortunately, they can't count on a repeat of the ridiculous special teams performance they had a week ago. The match up to watch then will be Kansas State receiver Jordy Nelson against KU's Aqib Talib. Something tells me the Jayhawks benefit from a big play from Talib on their way to a close victory.

How great is college football? And the season isn't even half over yet.
Big 12 North Enjoys the Limelight, Looks Forward to This Weekend originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Tue, 02 Oct 2007 07:00:00 EST . Kansas State capitalized on several short fields and a memorable punt return touchdown by Jordy Nelson to slowly pull away from Texas. The Wildcats led 41-21 early in the fourth quarter to make this all but a formality.

So much for the instant karma of Vince Young being on the sidelines. This also confirms that Texas' slogging against a pedestrian opening slate of out-of-conference foes wasn't just a good team having some bad games. Texas is simply not fit for the top 10 at this point of the season and was finally punished for not having its act together.

The big tilt between LSU and Florida next weekend was already going to steal some thunder from the Red River Rivalry, but the 'Horns' rivalry game suddenly lacks the drama that comes with an undefeated matchup.
Texas Loses to Kansas State originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sat, 29 Sep 2007 19:04:00 EST . Seriously. Jumpin' Jehosephat:

Louisville safety Latarrius Thomas will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, and coach Steve Kragthorpe said on Monday that the sophomore will likely apply for a medical redshirt.
(More like "first degree burns" after Louisville gave up 42 to Middle Tennessee State, which isn't even a directional school. It's a non-directional school.)

Also:

Pitt defensive tackle Gus Mustakas will miss the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, leaving the Panthers without their top defensive lineman.
Yikes. Pitt's run defense has been awful of late. This won't help.

Also:

Kansas State linebacker Antwon Moore is out for the season with an undisclosed injury.

The 5-foot-10, 210-pound junior appeared to hurt his left knee while sacking San Jose State quarterback Adam Tafralis during the Wildcats' 34-14 victory Saturday. Tafralis came down awkwardly on Moore's left leg, and Moore lay on the field for a few minutes before being helped off.

Hey, a 5'10" linebacker! Cool. He can hang out with Chris Graham and maybe give him some pointers about how not to lose to a designated cupcake.

Also:

Tennessee cornerback Antonio Gaines will miss the rest of the season after sustaining a torn knee ligament against Southern Mississippi.

The redshirt senior will undergo surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament but a date has not been set, team athletic trainer Jason McVeigh said.

This is very bad for a Tennessee secondary that looked shaky going into the season and is already starting freshman Eric Berry. Phil Fulmer may be joining Carr on the foregone conclusion seat sooner rather than later.
CFB Injury Report: Everyone Out For Year originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Tue, 11 Sep 2007 13:59:00 EST . Cheesy electric guitar? Check. Cheap looking mascot? Check. Completely unenthused Kansas State players? Check-a-roo.

Maybe this is why the Big 12 gets no respect nationally. I mean they could have at least explained what a Power Towel is and exactly what separates it from linens of the more common variety. Instead they just bash you over the head with constant reminders not to forget yours. In the end it comes off as the college football version of "Remember to Drink Your Ovaltine."
Don't Forget Your Power Towel!! originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Thu, 06 Sep 2007 19:14:00 EST . The Wildcat senior was arrested not once, but twice on charges related to a domestic disturbance.

The incident began at the apartment of an unnamed female:
"Norwood, according to Moldrup, pounded on the female victim's apartment door early Sunday morning in Manhattan, Kan., and tried to call her on a cell phone. When she ignored him, Norwood broke a sliding glass door with a chair, forced his way into a locked bedroom and pushed her onto the bed. There were no injuries, Moldrup said."
Not satisfied with his first efforts, Norwood returned to the apartment later that day, where he was arrested again after a brief search:
"Police were called back to the apartment later Sunday morning, where they found Norwood hiding under a bed. Moldrup said it was unclear how he gained entry, but Norwood was arrested with criminal trespassing because he had been warned following the first arrest not to see the victim at her residence or place of work."
Under the bed is so obvious, why not just hide behind the curtains with your feet sticking out? I don't think this is what Ron Prince meant when he said two-a-days had started in Manhattan.
Kansas State TE Busy Criminal, Poor Hide-and-Seek Player originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Mon, 20 Aug 2007 15:31:00 EST .
