New Cincinnati football coach Brian Kelly wants you to listen to him so badly, that he has signed on to write a daily diary for the Cincinnati Inquirer to talk about each practice of summer camp. Which is kind of nice for Cincinnati fans since the Cincinnati news media doesn't pay much attention to the Bearcats. I'm guessing that it probably seemed like a good idea at the time, but after today's practice, Kelly might be having second thoughts. At least if you follow the opening line.
Today was Excedrin headache No. 1 in a line where there are certainly more to come. Not exactly the positive attitude you're looking for from a first year coach, but at the same time at least he's honest. I wonder, though, if he has visions of R. Lee Ermey asking him if he thinks he's Mickey F'ing Spillane. It does give new meaning to the idea of calling someone out in the press. And Kelly let all his seniors know today that they will lead by example or they will run after practice.
Brian Kelly wants to get control of his team and let everyone know that he is the boss. As long as he's saying all these things at practice it probably doesn't hurt that he says them in the paper also. But after reading this I couldn't help but think, wouldn't it be great if Jerry Glanville was doing this?
Media Days aren't the most important thing for conferences, but they do provide a convenient place for the media to meet all the coaches and likely top players. The media sources can conduct some early interviews, get some stock footage and generally let the schools and conferences know that there will be some coverage.
