Cincinnati's Brian Kelly Wants You to Listen to Him

New Cincinnati football coach Brian Kelly wants you to listen to him so badly, that he has signed on to write a daily diary for the Cincinnati Inquirer to talk about each practice of summer camp. Which is kind of nice for Cincinnati fans since the Cincinnati news media doesn't pay much attention to the Bearcats.

I'm guessing that it probably seemed like a good idea at the time, but after today's practice, Kelly might be having second thoughts. At least if you follow the opening line.
Today was Excedrin headache No. 1 in a line where there are certainly more to come.
Not exactly the positive attitude you're looking for from a first year coach, but at the same time at least he's honest. I wonder, though, if he has visions of R. Lee Ermey asking him if he thinks he's Mickey F'ing Spillane. It does give new meaning to the idea of calling someone out in the press. And Kelly let all his seniors know today that they will lead by example or they will run after practice.

Brian Kelly wants to get control of his team and let everyone know that he is the boss. As long as he's saying all these things at practice it probably doesn't hurt that he says them in the paper also. But after reading this I couldn't help but think, wouldn't it be great if Jerry Glanville was doing this?

Cincinnati Still Ignores Bearcat Football

Media Days aren't the most important thing for conferences, but they do provide a convenient place for the media to meet all the coaches and likely top players. The media sources can conduct some early interviews, get some stock footage and generally let the schools and conferences know that there will be some coverage.

Cincinnati media, for the second straight year, has skipped the Big East Football Media Days. The Cinci Enquirer is using a freelance AP/MSNBC.com college basketball writer to supply some stories. The Cinci Post, just uses an AP story on the Big East. Now, the Post is folding at the end of the year so maybe they can be cut some slack, but the excuses by the Bearcat beat writer for the Post are weak.

If the Media Days are so unimportant and not worth the time, then why do (and will) they go to the Big East Basketball Media Days? There's little reason for that.

Just admit that the reason why there is no Cinci media outlet at the Big East Media Days is that there is still little interest by the general public in Bearcat football. The media outlets see little to justify spending $1000 or so on transportation and lodging of a reporter to go to it when people don't care.

International Bowl Preview: Cinci-Western Michigan

Full Name: International Bowl.

Vitals: University of Cincinnati Bearcats (7-5, Big East 4-3) versus Western Michigan University Broncos (8-4, MAC 6-2).
Saturday, January 6, 12 pm, Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, ESPN2.
Spread: Cinci by 7.

How Cinci Got Here:
By not just finishing 5th in the Big East, but winning 4 of their last 5 including upset wins over USF and Rutgers. This led to Michigan State poaching their head coach. Cinci then grabbed the head coach of the Central Michigan Chippewas, Brian Kelly, who will be making his debut in this game.

How Western Michigan got here:
A 3d place finish in the MAC. Which kind of sucks since the 4th place team in the MAC at least got to go to San Diego in December for their bowl.

What you absolutely have to know about Cinci:
They have a nice pictorial of the evolution of the Bearcat to the present logo that now has the "apostrophe" claws over the "C." The school is the largest employer in Cincinnati. Cinci didn't become a state school until 1977. Prior to that, it was a municipally sponsored university.

What you absolutely have to know about Western Michigan:
It's located in scenic Kalamazoo, Michigan. This school is just over 100 years old with 90% of the 26,000 strong student body coming from in-state. It was the 4th school to be designated as a public university in Michigan in 1957.

What you absolutely have to know about this bowl game:
This is the first year of the International Bowl. Since the new laws and travel restrictions, you need a passport to get into Canada (technically, not until January 23 if you fly and not until next year by land or see, but they do prefer that you have one even right now). Otherwise, this is a bargain game with the most expensive tickets costing only $35. Have I mentioned that the game is in Canada.

The schwag from this game is, well, weak:

• Souvenir watch
• Souvenir football for autographs
• Leather club bag

Why to watch:
Unless you want to watch college basketball, you have nothing else. The NFL playoffs don't have a kick-off until 4:30

Besides, this is near the very end of it. Just a couple more games and that's it for actual college football games until the end of August. Savor these final morsels. Even if under normal circumstances you wouldn't linger on this game in September.

Score Prediction:
Cinci 28 Western Michigan 19.
