MAC Daddies: Dan LeFevour

Just because you've never heard of anybody in the MAC Conference, doesn't mean there isn't anybody worth watching. With the college football season beginning soon, FanHouse gives you "MAC Daddies," a look at some players you may not yet know about but should.

When starting quarterback Brian Brunner left last year's season opener against Boston College with a concussion in the second quarter, it looked like Central Michigan was destined for another 5-win season. That's when freshman Dan LeFevour stepped in and led the Chippewas to a MAC title, and a victory over Middle Tennessee in the Motor City Bowl.

While leading the Chippewas to their first conference title in eleven years, theMotor City Bowl MVP also set school records in passing yards (3,031), touchdowns (26), and total yards (3,552). The difference this season of course is that LeFevour and the Chippewas aren't going to sneak up on anybody. There's also another obstacle that the sophomore is going to have to overcome.

You see, in the MAC Conference, when a team has a great season their head coach leaves for another school. That's exactly what happened in Mount Pleasant as Brian Kelly didn't even stick around for the bowl game before taking off for Cincinnati.

It shouldn't be too hard for LeFevour to adjust to the changes, as new head coach Butch Jones' offense is very similar to the one the Chippewas ran last season. Besides, even if LeFevour runs into trouble he can always rely on his legs. LeFevour rushed for 521 yards last season to finish second on the team, and was also tied for the team lead with 7 rushing touchdowns.

If the Chippewas are going to defend their title this season, it's going to be thanks to the arm and legs of Dan LeFevour.

Major College Athletic Departments Issued Subpoenas in Loan Probe

New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has issued subpoenas for 39 collegiate athletic departments in a probe of their relationships with student loan providers. At its most basic, this investigation is asking whether or not cash, kickbacks, gifts and other bribes or misleading measures were communicated between various student loan providers and the cited athletic departments.

Cuomo is investigating whether athletic departments at these universities agreed to promote SFS loans to students in exchange for kickbacks.

"Students trust their University's athletic departments because so much of campus life at Division I schools centers around supporting the home team," said Cuomo. "To betray this trust by promoting loans in exchange for money is a serious issue, especially when Division I schools already generate tremendous revenue from their student athletes. Today's action is an important new step as we continue to examine the unethical conflicts that pervade the student loan industry.

"The Attorney General's office is specifically investigating whether athletic departments evaluated UFS interest rates before recommending their federal loans, or if their endorsement of UFS was based purely on payments from the lender. Such an arrangement would constitute revenue sharing, which is a violation New York state consumer protection laws, as well as a violation of federal law.

Of note: USC and Texas have also been scrutinized in a similar probe, but to my knowledge it has not been linked to their athletic departments but rather the university-wide financial aid offices of the schools.

It's good that athletic departments have an awareness of and working relationship with loan providers, but obviously there's a problem when that relationship gets too cozy and bad loan options are pressed upon students and student-athletes.

Terribly Exciting Motor City Liveblog: Fourth Quarter

10:03 PM. Central leads Middle 28-7 going into the fourth quarter; it looks like I'll be calling the bit of things that aren't the edge the "center" for the next year. They should play this thing every year. It could be a grudge match on a par with the annual Perimeter State-University of Circumference border battle.

HA! Border battle! I kill me!

We have a new Motor City Bowl attendance record: 54,000-ish. That's actually pretty impressive. The Central fans are representing.

Meanwhile, Central's gone three-and-out and will be punting from their own two. The flip in the field position is entirely due to the roughing the kicker penalty. Punt is up, and Desmond Gee zips, cuts, and slides his way up to the Central 15! Suddenly this might be something resembling a ballgame. Marks back in the game.

10:09 PM. PBP guy just said that Central leads in total yardage, "but that's the only statistic they lead in." In other news, Central has more touchdowns but that's the only scoring category they lead in.

Meanwhile, Middle punches it in with the short field. 28-14 Central.

10:16 PM. Michael Strahan also berates Jared about meat.
10:20 PM. Central has -6 total yards this half. Sneed turns that into +7 right quick. Middle had Central about a yard short on a third down screen, but a roughing the passer call gives them fifteen and a first down. On replay it was ridiculously late and stupid.

Central WR Obed Cetoute is from Montreal and has been drafted by the CFL. I wonder what his reaction was when he met Ontario.

This Central drive is winding its way down the field, eating up four or five minutes. A third and long ends up with a Middle pass interference penalty that was beyond blantant, but the side judge on that side of the field refused to throw the flag even though it was inches in front of him. The guy in the middle of the field (field judge?) had to throw it. With Central at the 11 and eight minutes left in the game, this one's about over.

Linson cedes five yards on an end-around. Bleah. Betcha a QB draw and a FG. I lose, as they look deep. End result is a one-yard sack and the same thing anyway. 33-yarder coming up.... which is missed badly. Question: why the hell is Central snapping the ball with 20 seconds left on the play clock? They could have bled another two or three minutes on that drive if they had run the maximum amount on every play.

10:29 PM. Well, that didn't start well. Marks throws a ball to no one in particular save a Central safety, who drops an easy pick. Middle then runs off tackle. The coaches get no gold stars this game. And they're huddling on fourth and one, having already burned a minute and a half before getting ten yards on this drive. Central stuffs them on fourth down, anyway, so it's moot.

10:33 PM. Central persists with the ignoring of the clock thing, bombing it into the endzone on third down. 43-yard field goal is good: Central, 31-14. With the Chips up three scores and 3:22 to go, this one's over. Chippewas win.

Terribly Exciting Motor City Liveblog: Third Quarter

9:28 PM. Pet peeve: Middle is averaging over 7 yards per pass and exactly 3 per run, so what do they need to do in the second half to get back into the game? Run the ball, according to color guy. Say what? One yard on Middle's first play of the second half, a run.

Next play is yet another Desmond Gee WR screen, and though he's not Reggie Bush, he is a fast little bugger. Another Gee screen picks up the first down. Middle Tennessee starts driving -- nice slant -- but ends up in third and ten. Marks hurls it well behind a crossing route into Doug Kress's arms and he rumbles his way into the endzone. Central 28-7.

9:38 PM. Pressure on Marks that led to the pick-six? Dan Bazuin. He's fine, and the little girl who wants her pony just may get it.

Next Middle offensive play is a mob perfectly covered by a guy named Chaz West, a freshman from Florida. Gee's wide receiver screen is finally shut down, and it's third and twelve again.... third and seventeen. False start. Central hasn't touched the ball yet this half, interception aside, and has extended their lead by seven. Time of possession? Pshaw.

Third and 17? McBain time. Bazuin comes around the left tackle and splatters Marks. Three and out, punting from the endzone, and this game is about 40 yards from game over.

9:44 PM. Subway had John Cena and Jared in a room talking about meat.

9:45 PM. First Central snap comes with 7:03 left in the half. Dude... the color guy is a Central alum. What are the chances of a Central alum capable of doing something other than slurring drunkenly after 8 PM on a Tuesday? Central goes three-and-out, failing to convert a third and short on a stretch play. The punt dies on the two yard line. The punter freaks out like he's just won the punting Super Bowl.

Anyone notice that when the announcers talk about Ford Field they mention the Super Bowl and the Motor City Bowl but never the Lions? Good idea, that.

Middle swaps QBs and heads backwards with a false start on the first play and ends up going three-and-out, punting from their own two. Central hits the kicker, giving Middle another shot at moving the ball. Horrible penalty. IMO, you should never rush a punt when it's third and less than five, especially when you're going to get the ball on the opponent's side of the field anyway.

10:00 PM. Middle can't do anything against the Central defense despite the get-out-of-jail card and ends up punting after a festival del penalty, both ways. End of the quarter, Central 28-7.

Terribly Exciting Motor City Liveblog: Second Quarter

8:17 PM. The announcers are floored by an Incredibly Surprising Quarterback Draw when a slot guy takes a direct snap and plows ahead for a few yards. Bazuin continues terrorizing opposing quarterbacks, but Marks manages to shovel a pass to his scatback for a third down conversion. Rats. Still, an opportunity to deploy a McBain picture:

Oh yeah, that's the stuff. Middle now driving with a first and goal on the three with Brian Kelly on the phone trying to explain his depature for Cincinnati, which isn't hard. Another review as the first and goal play was ruled down while it appears to be a touchdown... and it is. 14-7 Central.

8:32 PM. Onside kick! And that's the wrong answer for Middle; Central recovers, hits a 20-yard pass on the first play of their drive, and is suddenly at the MIddle 30. Aaand roughing the passer: Middle 15. LeFevour scrambles out of trouble on second down and Central goes in on all of four plays. LeFevour with 52 yards rushing already. 21-7 Central.

8:39 PM. More ammunition for my hatred of time of possession: Central's near last in the country and trailing badly in this game, yet leads 21-7. Bazuin is on the sideline for some reason; announcers bring up the offseason tragedy, his 18-year-old brother's suicide, that's cast a pallor over Bazuin's senior season. Frowny.

Announcers then compare Middle Mighty Mite Desmond Gee to Reggie Bush. Other things in the genre of "Middle Tennessee's Reggie Bush":

"Joe Dailey's Best Pass"
"Russia's Finest Intellectal Property Lawyer"

Duuuuude. Not good. On a third and three, Bazuin gets chopped nastily by the offensive tackle, making the knee go in directions it's not supposed to go. Replay looks like an ACL for sure, but Bazuin hops up after a while and jogs off the field. ESPN captures shots of the family, including one cousin-ish type person who's bawling at the prospect of her pony going up in a smoke of shredded knee ligaments.

Middle punts after the McBain scare, LeFevour takes off for yet more rushing yardage, gets a personal foul tacked on, then does the exact same thing on the next play, then lofts up a beautiful ball that his receiver drops. Kid can play. Central driving again.

8:52 PM. Seriously, the PBP guy constantly referring to Central's opponents as "Middle" is a neverending source of crackups. A holding penalty is followed by two meh screens; third and twelve ends with LeFevour overthrowing an open fly route. Central punt; Middle has 3:32 and two timeouts.

8:55 PM. Middle puts together a bit of a drive, but a couple errant throws put Middle in a third and long and a blitz ends in intentional grounding, giving Central a chance for more points before the half. First play goes off tackle for 12, then they run the same play from around the forty with little success. By the time LeFevour hits an out for the first down they have only 26 seconds left. Poor clock management.

9:03 PM. Central's next three plays are dismal, making the clock stuff moot. 21-7, Central, at the half.

Terribly Exciting Motor City Liveblog: First Quarter

7:32 PM. Aannd we're off. Reason to love college footbal #3,459: Central Michigan's third string quarterback returned the opening kickoff and did a creditable job.

Brian Kelly is NOT* coaching this game, flying directly to Toronto, and coaching in the International Bowl, which will have to change its name when we annex Canada and turn Quebec into a massive radioactive waste dump.

*(apparently I misunderstood this. I am teh dumb.)

7:37 PM. It's never a good sign when the color guy offhandedly says your defense looks more like a I-AA team's before they even face a snap. MTSU quickly prves this time-tested adage by yielding a Chippewa touchdown on the first drive of the game.

The CMU crowd goes wild! This first time the majority of the fans at Ford Field was happy since... last year's Motor City Bowl!

7:42 PM. MTSU's offense appears to be wide receiver screens to a 5'8" guy. Working, though. Central Michigan gets a sack from an unblocked defensive end... and apparently Sun Belt offensive tackles are no better than their referees. Sack by a guy named "Ogle," but the camera shot momentarily obscures only the L on his jersey. For one brief, thrilling moment it appears that the guy's name is "OGRE," but alas.
Dan "McBain" Bazuin picks up a coverage sack on second down; MTSU picks up most of it on third to set up a field goal attempt. Field goal well wide; PBP guy calls them simply "Middle." We have Middle versus Central... which thing that isn't an extremity will reign supreme?

7:50 PM. Question: how can those Allstate commercials with the generic blue-and-white "STATE" fans be so wildly divergent in quality? The one where the guy says "that's Bobby Bowden, I'm going to touch him," then gets his door sheared off, then says "I'm still going to touch him" is gold; the rest may as well be those Dr. Pepper commercials brought to you by infinite annoyance and the number 23.

Meanwhile, regionally-themed Central running back Ontario Sneed -- who is probably the only person other than me upset that Central didn't get picked for the International Bowl in lovely Ontario -- scoots down the sideline for a 40-ish yard gain that is reviewed down to a 30-ish yard game. (He stepped out.) Central first and ten at the Middle 48... check it. The Central 48. The curse of review encapsulated: they did correctly shave 10 yards of the Sneed run but it took like eight minutes.

Central laughs at your review, as a LeFevour botches a zone read handoff but decides to use the RB as a lead blocker and scampers for 23. Sneed takes a swing pass for a 29 yard touchdown: 14-0 Central. I glory in your agony, Sun Belt.

7:58 PM. Is this a regional cable thing or did everyone just see a UAW commercial?

8:00 PM. They've picked up on the Ontario Sneed thing at ESPN studios. Color guy suggests that Sneed's going to party across the border tonight... and if he's 19 or 20 I assure you he will. Ensuing kickoff returned by Middle across the Central 50; PBP says that Middle has received an "injection of hope," then says he's surprised that there wasn't activity downtown, finishing up by saying it was "pretty easy to get around Detroit today." That and every other day of the year.

Middle's momentary hope high comes crashing down with a three-and-out puncuated with Bazuin levelling the Middle QB. How long will it take Central to score this time?

8:07 PM. Longer than I thought: punt.

First quarter ends 14-0, Central, with Middle driving.

Motor City Bowl Preview

Central Michigan (9-4, 7-1 MAC, Champions) vs. Middle Tennessee State (7-5, 6-1 Sun Belt)
December 26, 7:30 Eastern, ESPN

Spread:
Central by 8.5.

How Central Michigan Got Here:

On the strength of a fortuitous concussion. Chippewas starting quarterback Brian Brunner rolled out and ran on Central's first series of the year. He met two Eagles and Mr. Head Injury after a four yard gain, and then it was Enter the LeFevour. Redshirt freshman Dan LeFevour came off the bench and was inexplicably effective. Trailing 31-24, CMU was driving to tie when Brian Kelly, newly the coach at Cincinnati, inexplicably called a swinging gate play that ended in a dismal interception. From there, there was no cure for LeFevour. Ending line: 231 of 362 for 2869 and a 25-10 TD-INT ratio. He ended the season 20th in passer efficiency, and after Central's season-opening BCS death slate Central took off, going 7-1 in the MAC and beating Ohio in the championship game.

How Middle Tennessee Got Here:

Nobody knows, really. The Sun Belt co-champs were humiliated regularly by any OOC team they were offered up to: 59-0 against Oklahoma, 44-17 versus Louisville, 52-7 versus South Carolina. They did manage to stay within two touchdowns of Maryland, but the overall picture is Glorified I-AA. They did manage to stomp the Unglorified I-AA represented by the rest of the Sun Belt aside from the season-ending one point loss to the Troy Trojans of Troy (We're From Troy!).

What You Absolutely Have To Know About Central Michigan:

In Central's ugly loss to Northern Illinois, linebacker Josh Cowbell sacked LeFevour eight times, intercepted three passes, and made rough love to the Chippewa cheerleaders at halftime.

What You Absolutely Have To Know About Middle Tennessee State:

If you hate the RIAA (and you do), you'll want to root for Central: MTSU's toughest program is the Department of Recording Industry, where you can take classes in Suing Children, Lowering Royalties For Artist, and Pumping Dreck Into The Nation's Ears.

Score Prediction:
Superficially, Central has the same sort of record MTSU does, but their respective losses against good competition could not be more different. Central should win the game handily, but Kelly's departure for Cincinnati mucks things up. It might be competitive as a result... emphasis on "might." CMU 35, MTSU 17.

What You Absolutely Have To Know About This Bowl Game:

Either team would be a small favorite over the Detroit Lions.

Miscellaneous:

-This is the Motor City Bowl's tenth anniversary, amazingly. There's no bowl game in Chicago, but you can't kill the Motor City Bowl.

-Central Michigan defensive end Dan Bazuin is a potential first-round draft pick if he tests well. He'll be the best player on either team.

-If I ran Middle Tennessee State -- and I'm available, Blue Raiders -- I think I'd drop the "Middle," but that's just me.

-A couple of years ago I regularly beat the sin out of MTSU in my epic Idaho national championship runs in NCAA 2004. Ha ha.
