Four field goals and nothing that would do much beyond induce sleep. Utah was down 9-3 and barely had over 150 yards of total offense. BYU just couldn't convert.

The Utes then had a 7+ minute drive that culminated in a 10-9 Utah lead with 1:34 left. A drive that BYU appeared to have stopped several times, but could not. Utah went 5 for 5 on 3d down conversions in the drive.

BYU got the ball and started at the 20. The Utes defense came out fired up and not only had the Cougars stopped, they had them at 4th and 18. Everything was there for the big Utah upset to claim the Mountain West on BYU's own field. Payback for BYU's last minute win in Salt Lake City last year.

Then things got crazy in Provo.

BYU QB Max Hall dropped back, had to scramble and just threw deep -- to a wide open Austin Collie for a 49-yard gain. Collie had somehow gotten behind all of the Utah defenders. Suddenly getting in field goal range become very reasonable.

The Utes came undone on the next play with a personal foul call for fifteen more yards. The refs then called a very weak pass interference call for 15 more yards -- it looked like the BYU receiver pulled on the Utah defender on replay. Two plays later, Harvey Unga ran 11 yards straight into the endzone. BYU even completed the 2-point conversion for a 17-10 lead.

Utah still had a chance, but couldn't do it. They had a solid return to their own 39 to start with 3 timeouts and half-a-minute left. On the first play, Derrek Richards was wide open 40 yards down field for a pass from Brian Richards and just dropped it. That did it. Utah didn't have enough time to get down field and the shoulders noticeably sagged.
BYU Claims the Latest Holy War originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sat, 24 Nov 2007 17:50:00 EST . I even stayed up late waiting . . . waiting . . . waiting . . .

And now I'm witness to one of the most vicious hits I've EVER seen in the game of football. While scrambling early in the fourth quarter attempting to get a first down, Brennan was drilled in the head by a flying defender and sent directly to the ground.

I'm pretty sure it was lights out after that. Hell, it looked like he was decapitated. Check YouTube in a few hours if you have the stomach.

Anyway, he now stands at 121 career touchdown passes, the same number as Ty Detmer. That's a tie so his glory will have to wait for another day if he even plays again in the next few weeks. Dude's not gonna remember tonight because his brain just got rattled something special. Oh well.
No Touchdown Mark for Colt Brennan Tonight originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sun, 11 Nov 2007 02:04:00 EST . Detmer was an All-American, passed for over 15,000 yards in his career, and won the Heisman in 1990. He became the Heisman Trophy frontrunner very early with this game on September 8, against #1 Miami in Provo.

Miami took an early lead, but BYU answered, and went into the half with a 17-14 lead. A little more than 3 minutes into the second half, Miami took a 21-14 lead. They never scored again.

Detmer led the Cougars down the field, but had to settle for a field goal. Then BYU took the lead with a touchdown pass (Detmer's 3d of the night) and a two-point conversion to take a 28-21 lead that was the final score. Detmer passed for 406 yards.

The otherwise fantastic season for BYU and Detmer ended with a thud when the (Rainbow) Warriors of Hawaii routed them in the season finale, 59-28. It actually managed to get worse when Texas A&M demolished them in the Holiday Bowl 65-14. Detmer was knocked out of the game with two separated shoulders.

Despite the poor ending to 1990 for BYU, it doesn't take away from one of the finest college football quarterback performances, and the greatest upset in BYU history.

Old School: Ty Detmer Launches His Heisman Candidacy Over #1 Miami originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Wed, 22 Aug 2007 11:07:00 EST . Check out the Old School archive for more famous plays and infamous hair.

This game is classic early 1980's college football. We had SMU's "Pony Express" team with Eric Dickerson and Craig James. We had upstart BYU with the man who would later be known as "The Punky QB": Jim McMahon.

We had a classic running team delivering an absolute first-half beatdown of BYU and its newfangled pass attack.

And we had one of the greatest comebacks in college football history.

SMU held a 35-13 first-half lead before BYU narrowed that with an early second half touchdown. However, SMU just kept on scoring, building a 45-25 lead on the strength of James' crazy legs. What happened next is the stuff of legend with diving touchdowns, mad scrambles, onside kicks, missed conversion attempts, a blocked punt with 0:13 left and a Flutie-esque Hail Mary.

This game established credibility for both BYU and the wild reputation of the Holiday Bowl. The furious finish also overshadowed a fantastic overall performance by James.

In the 1980 Holiday Bowl, James' offensive production of 225 rushing yards and 9.9 yards/carry were both Holiday Bowl records that stood for 13 and 15 years respectively.

Video below.

Old School: Jim McMahon and BYU Beat SMU and The Pony Express in the 1980 Holiday Bowl originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sun, 12 Aug 2007 20:12:00 EST . In the first year of operation, the mtn. has made it to a whopping 1.2 million homes.

It appears to be a flop. Utah and BYU took the lead and got the rest of the Mountain West members to help foot the bill in hiring an attorney to explore options with their TV deal.

In its annual meeting Tuesday, the MWC Board of Directors voted unanimously to retain Kelly Crabb, the lawyer originally hired and retained last week by BYU and Utah, in efforts to clarify the nature of the TV contract and delineate distribution strategies of The mtn. network.

Crabb will work with Commissioner Craig Thompson and an ad hoc committee made up of three Board members - BYU President Cecil Samuelson, Texas Christian University Chancellor Victor Boschini and Colorado State University President Larry Edward Penley. The conference presidents spearheaded the TV deal that the MWC settled on a year ago with the network co-owned by Comcast Cable and CBS' College Sports Television.

However, there is widespread displeasure because of the troubles in getting The mtn., distributed.
This has fueled speculation that the Mountain West may try to find a way to get out of its deal, and pull the plug on the mtn. The mtn. has not been picked up by either satellite provider, and very few sizable cable operators in the markets (PDF) where the schools operate (Comcast in Utah and Cox in Las Vegas and San Diego are the largest carriers that have it).
It's unlikely that the Mountain West would be able to pull the plug, nor is it clear that the schools really want to. They obviously want to make their fans happier and want to be added to satellite providers and more cable systems. The fans aren't pissed that the games are on the mtn. They are pissed because they can't see their team on TV. That's a lot of what the attorney they hired is likely to try to help accomplish. Negotiate and get the channel better distribution. That would include forcing Comcast and CSTV to work harder or cut the cost per household.

The Mountain West went the route of their own channel for a couple reasons.

Money was the big reason. ESPN actually tried to cut their payouts from $800,000 per school per year to $500,000. Comcast and CSTV offered the Mountain West $1.1 million per school per year.

The other reason, and almost as important. Control. The old contract with ESPN effectively made the Mountain West weekday fall programming filler for the Worldwide Leader. Teams would be playing on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Friday nights. Usually after 10 pm Eastern. The fans of the teams who actually attended the games hated it. Attendance suffered and it's hard to market the schools, conference and programs as well when the that TV coverage shows stands half-filled because people weren't able to get to the games on the weekdays.

By going with Comcast and CSTV, the majority of the Mountain West games went back to Saturdays.

But the big service the mtn. network has provided for the MWC has been the flexibility in the athletic schedules, specifically in football.

"Saturday afternoons is when I believe we should play football," Whittingham said. "That's what the mtn. has done. Our home schedule is all Saturday afternoon contests. I think that's a big positive."

Fitzpatrick also noted that the mtn. offers unprecedented coverage within the conference, including on-campus cameras and televised coverage of MWC sports such as swimming, baseball and softball, which are enjoying exposure never seen in the conference before.
It also means their games are featured on both CSTV and Versus. While that doesn't come close to the market penetration by ESPN channels (just ask the NHL), they do have more of their games aired nationally. In the last year of the deal with ESPN, only 7 Mountain West games were on ESPN.

Additionally, the deal to have their own sports channel gave the Mountain West more control over the distribution rights (and revenue streams) from their sports. This means, in the long-term they do have options in streaming games live over the web via their own sites and getting larger cuts of subscriber fees.

Other conferences besides just the Big Ten will eventually follow suit. The control and potential new revenue streams will be too good to pass. The same reason Major League Baseball teams keep setting up their own channels.

Mountain West was merely the first, and the example of things not to do.

Previously on Fanhouse:
Big Ten Network Getting Political Pressure
Big Ten Network May Not Be Huge Fiasco
SEC TV Network? He left the spring with a severe foot injury and likely facing several younger challengers for the #2 job next fall. Enter the fallback route for itinerant quarterbacks: the transfer.

Cooper's injury - compared to the Lisfranc injury where ligaments tear in the foot - is fairly serious, requiring at least a year of recovery. Hall clearly beat him out in the spring, but the injury, recovery time and depth chart issues may have forced his hand and the transfer.

What does this mean to the average college football fan? Not much, but it would behoove you to scratch his name out of the Phil Steele College Football Preview's BYU page. He was listed as a PS#5 quarterback, headlining BYU's signing class. Sadly, expectations are all for naught after a cruel twist of fate did in not his elbow or back but a solitary foot.
BYU Loses Backup Quarterback originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Fri, 29 Jun 2007 20:50:00 EST . Because they're our friends and the subject matter lends itself to hilarity, we thought we'd join in the fun. So here's our look at the worst uniforms in college football history.

This is always a difficult thing for college football fans, because everyone knows that Oregon is the be-all and end-all of hideous uniforms. They've been rocking their day-glo green and yellow combinations for decades, mixing in smatterings of black, white and truck-bed gray whenever the mood strikes them, which is constantly. There's no debate: Oregon has the worst uniforms in college football and probably in the entirety of sport. So, yeah. Brian Grummell highlighted five of the ugliest Oregon unis of all time in a separate post. The rest of the world is just trying to finish second.

You may notice that many of these "worst uniforms of all time" are recent creations. There is a simple reason for this and it resides in Oregon: Nike.

Dishonorable Mention: Penn State. What? Penn State? Yes. It's no coincidence that uncommitted recruits in EA's NCAA series have helmets that look like PSU's, as Penn State's uniform is really more of an absence of style than anything else. What one perceives as clean, classic, and unadorned is just boring to another. The kicker: you can trace the irritating trend of teams removing names from the back of their uniforms, thus confusing onlookers as to just who the hell is who on your newly "unified" team full of team players who play on a team right back to the Nittany Lion getups. While the PSU uniforms don't rise to the level of horror the following do, they're always amongst the most overrated uniforms in college.

5. The Nike One-Shoulder Look. This can't be blamed on one team. Rather, these hideous creations are the fault of Nike's phantasmagoric uniform torture lab, which decided it would be really cool to make some football teams look like stormtroopers.

Miami, Virginia Tech, and a few others obliged; the results were eye-melting. Though these are legendarily ugly, points are taken off because they were a one-time stunt.

4. BYU Wanna Cookie, Must Finish Sippy Cup To Get It. College football players have a reputation as being large, immature people who may be more boy than man, but this is taking it a bit far:

Unless you're really into lobster or two years old, a bib is never a good look.

3. We're Green Beer. Notre Dame's blue and gold is an iconic combination. Though many hate the Irish, none can seriously claim that they don't look good whilst getting whomped on whenever they play real competition. Unless, of course, it's a game so big Notre Dame busts out these monstrosities:

Gold helmets, gold pants, gold numbers, and green jerseys. Bleah. And it's not like the lucky charms -- they're always after me green jerseys -- actually work. Whenever the Irish have donned the green jerseys the past couple decades they've lost in them. It got so bad that last year ND broke them out against Army to break the hex.

2. "M" is for "Minnesota"; the other "M" is for "aaaargh my eyes".

Assuming the Ms on the helmet and pants are symmetrical, that means there are a grand total of six of the ugly slanted Minnesota Ms on this abomination. Yuck.

1. Clemson Would Like To Share A Song. Clemson hadn't rocked all purple since the 1930s until last year against Georgia Tech, and while the end result of their experiment was a big win over the then ACC leaders, they did not look maaaaahvelous:

Popsicle? Or Barney wannabes? Either way, these should come with a biohazard warning.

The Worst College Football Uniforms Of All Time, Non-Oregon Edition originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Tue, 05 Jun 2007 16:10:00 EST . BYU head football coach Bronco Mendenhall suspended the players Sunday. A news release from BYU athletics said that sophomore inside linebacker Hooks and sophomore tight end So'oto were suspended from the team "for violation of team rules."
It seems the girlfriend of Hooks was leaving a dance when some guys on the third floor of a nearby apartment building were tossing water balloons off of their balcony into the parking lot. One of the balloons hit the girlfriend of Hooks on the leg. She yelled at them, they yelled back, and she left for her boyfriend, who brought So'oto with him as back-up.

More yelling from the parking lot to the balcony before Hooks and So'oto headed into the apartment to find the water balloon tossers to, um, talk.

Naturally the players got turned around and confused -- not even sure which was the right apartment they wanted. That didn't stop them from choosing a door.

When no one answered immediately, Edwards said Hooks kicked the door in. The group in the "wrong apartment" called security, who happened to be an off-duty Orem police officer. The officer told them he was on his way over and to call the police.

When Hooks, Dew and So'oto actually found the apartment they were looking for, they kicked that door in and proceeded to the back room where, Edwards said, the balloon throwers had retreated. Before they got to them, the security officer and police arrived in the apartment.

Hooks, Dew and So'oto were taken into custody for burglary, in that they entered or remained unlawfully on a premise with the intent to commit an assault.

Police cited the balloon throwers with criminal mischief for their part in the incident.
Considering that the players went to the trouble to kick-in two doors to find them, the balloon tossers probably weren't too upset over a minor misdemeanor versus what would have happened if security and police hadn't arrived sooner.
Don't Upset the Girlfriends of BYU Football Players originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Mon, 09 Apr 2007 15:18:00 EST . Her cry for help was heard by Staley and his trusty sidekick, a local UPS driver, and the two of them were able to retrieve the purse and assist police in the young hooligan's capture.

So keep that in mind, you purse-snatching fiends. target="_blank" href="http://ncaafootball.aolsportsblog.com/2007/02/17/frank-broyles-to-step-down-at-arkansas/">Frank Broyles is expected to step down this week. His departure is yet another symbol of the passing of one of college football's greatest generations, the great coaches who presided over the game from 1960 or so until the mid to late 1970's. Broyles coached the Razorbacks from 1958 to 1976 helping them win a championship and competing nationally in a great era against powers like Alabama, USC, Notre Dame and Michigan.

Another giant of his time has left us in the mortal sense: Bo Schembechler. Schembechler coached Michigan from 1969 to 1989 becoming the face of the program until his death just before the Michigan/Ohio State game last year.

The only giants of that era still with us are Broyles, former Texas coach Darrell Royal (1957-1976) and former Notre Dame coach Ara Paraseghian (1964-1974).

Among the magnificent but dead is Alabama's Bear Bryant (1958-1982) who retired at the end of the 1982 season and promptly checked out of mortal existence. Ohio State's Woody Hayes (1951-1978) hung around until his death in 1987. Nebraska's Bob Devaney (1962-1972) checked out in 1997 and USC's comedic John McKay (1960-1975) lasted a little longer, passing away in 2001.

All those giants left the coaching ranks long ago, but each stewarded elite programs for a decade or more. To this day most of them remain the standard for which current coaches aspire to at each of their programs. Schembechler's death and Broyles' departure signal the end of their collective direct involvement in the college game.

As that great generation fades further into memory we must now also begin to take stock of the succeeding generation of coaches. I'm talking about guys like Bobby Bowden, Joe Paterno, Tom Osborne, John Robinson, Vince Dooley, Don James, Hayden Fry, Pat Dye, Lou Holtz, Lavell Edwards and Barry Switzer here.

They are the ones who were the game's caretakes from the mid to late 1970's until the late 1980's, an era of great transition and upheaval due to parity measures such as scholarship limits, the completion of racial integration and the rapid and dramatic death of plodding, run-heavy conventional offenses such as USC's "Student Body Right/Student Body Left" approach.

We'll save that analysis for another day, another time. Until then it's one final embrace of perhaps college football's "greatest generation" of coaches. Thanks for the memories, fellas.
07 Issues: Passing of an Important Generation originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Mon, 19 Feb 2007 23:50:00 EST . internet. I mean, can you remember back when we weren't able to, at the click of a button, immediately call up highlights from our favorite games or watch dwarves dance to Indian music?

Well, it looks like students at BYU will be going back to the dark ages of internet video, as the campus has blocked access to YouTube for all students due to the potential of being subjected to "inappropriate material". That's a tough break for BYU students, and we wish them well in these long, dark, YouTubeless years. Those of you who aren't on campus, have a look at this awesome clip of BYU's miraculous last-second victory over Utah. For you students, well, you can look at this red "X" and imagine how great it would be.

Unfortunately, the first option isn't available for BYU, so instead they're raising ticket prices.

So, what's the damage?

Fans who paid $90 in 2006 for an end zone ticket will pay $96 this fall

Six bucks is pretty negligible, although $90 for a seat seems a tad bit high from my experience. Of course, then I continued reading the article...

a difference of $6, or a $1 increase per game.

Ah, $96 for season tickets. That makes a bit more sense. Anyway, here's a rundown of the scheduled improvements:

Future projects include repairing eroded concrete; resurfacing concourse walkways and stadium ramps; replacing and repairing stadium stairs; repainting stands (including rust abatement); installing new stadium field lighting; refurbishing a visiting locker room; creating a visiting-team press area; and constructing west-stadium hosting facilities.

Sounds swanky. I'll pitch in a buck for that.

BYU Raises Ticket Prices to Finance Stadium Upgrades originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Fri, 16 Feb 2007 04:04:00 EST . However, the OLN still survives... in Canada. Yay Maple Leaf Power. Perhaps this is a stopgap until the new Mountain West TV deal put together in the offseason begins next year? Feel free to fill me in here.

Anyway, consider this a public service announcement if you had no clue 1)this channel existed and/or 2)this channel is broadcasting college football games.

So far the announcers and production value are sound, with one of the announcers talking with the energized, hoarse cadence of a former coach.

Update:

FanHouse's very own Adam Nettina adds the following:
Vs airs one MWC "Game of the Week" from what I understand (In a deal with The MTN.) Actually, Utah and Boise will play at 3 EST on Saturday on the network. That's what I know, although Jazzy Ute from blocku.com is the resident know-it-all on anything Mountain West.
Thanks, Adam!
BYU versus TCU... on Versus originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Thu, 28 Sep 2006 18:25:00 EST .
