It's not like the public has fully embraced the drawn-out inquest into Barry Bonds and Rogers Clemens, Senator Arlen Specter's crusade against the Patriots, and so on.

But no. Three misguided members of Congress now seek to interfere with college football, all in the name of pandering.

Three members of Congress want the Justice Department to investigate whether the Bowl Championship Series is an illegal enterprise.

Representatives Neil Abercrombie, Democrat of Hawaii; Lynn Westmoreland, Republican of Georgia; and Mike Simpson, Republican of Idaho, introduced a resolution saying the B.C.S. restricts trade because only the largest universities compete in its games. The resolution would require the Justice Department's antitrust division to investigate if the B.C.S. violates federal law.

The measure, if it passes, would put Congress on record as supporting a postseason playoff.

Hawaii? Check. Idaho? Check. Georgia? Check. No pandering going on here! Hilariously stupid quote of the month goes to Hawaii Democrat Neil Abercrombie:

"Who elected these N.C.A.A. people?" Abercrombie said at a news conference Thursday on Capitol Hill while gripping a souvenir University of Hawaii football. "Who are they to decide who competes for the championship?"

Never let facts get in the way of a good time folks! Imagine, private - not public like Congress - interests such as the NCAA determining how their own organizations are run? This is apparently scary stuff for the closet fascist the great people of Hawaii have elected. Best of all Abercrombie doesn't appear to realize that "those NCAA people" aren't deciding who competes for college football's championship, nor should they. It's in the hands of the institutions and the conferences themselves.

Exit question: What, no co-signature from any of Alabama's representatives?

Members Of Congress to Department of Justice: Investigate the BCS originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Fri, 18 Apr 2008 15:16:00 EST . Petersen is said to be the favorite, but the notoriously stingy University may opt for Mariucci, as he has no contract that needs to be bought out.

There's only one little problem: Guerrero has yet to dump current head coach Karl Dorrell. In fact, Dorrell is quoted in the University's official press release regarding the Las Vegas Bowl, saying, "UCLA is extremely happy to be playing in the Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl." I guess he has a point, because the way this season went, Dorrell should be happy to be in a bowl at all!

Given his 5-1 record against Dorrell, it should come as little surprise that USC coach Pete Carroll is coming across as Karl's greatest fan, imploring fans and the University to, "Give him a friggin' break."
Three Make UCLA Short List originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Mon, 03 Dec 2007 12:30:00 EST .
Boise State leads 28 to 10 over Southern Miss.

Be sure and read the first half live blog ... ESPN broadcasters love to dance. They just flashed video of Lou Holtz doing some crazy dance, then Rece Davis joining him. Earlier, Craig James was dancing all weird in the booth. Not to go all Peyton Manning on you guys, but "alright, now stop that. Seriously, stop."

Early conclusions: Craig James is high (maybe). Boise's remote. Southern Miss can't stop basic runs like "pitch left". Boise State has the highest per capita of shopping mall Santa's. I'm missing The Office and CSI.

Live Blog after the jump ...

9:26 - Lou Holtz just compared USF to a bumblebee. And he said a hypocrite is someone who complains about sex and violence on their VCR. Wow. I love these pep talks!

Brian Cook reminds me that USF is now DOOMED. Lou Holtz's talks are cursed.

9:34 - Score! The pep talk is online. Video below.

9:40 - Nice first drive here for Southern Miss so far. Some draws, a quarterback scramble, a third down plunge, an out pass, it's all working. Make that a second third-down conversion as Marty Tadman got run over.

9:43 - Oh Lord ... That was a touchdown if the tight end catches it. His quarterback took a nasty hit to get that perfect pass in there. That's disappointing.

9:44 - Redemption! Nelson caught that one and sneaks in for the 23-yard touchdown. Boise State's waaaayyyy too relaxed right now. If you've read me at all before, you know I call this type of play "The Relent". Southern Miss is making its way back in this game as Boise sits fat and happy. Missed extra point though, doink! Boise State 28, Southern Miss 16

9:50 - It's been tough sledding on the ground so far for Ian Johnson, but that's his second drive-changing reception. Again, more deceptive moves there. He's got this weird little shoulder dip that guys bite hard on. Quick sideline shot there, looks like he's bleeding from his mouth? How about one more good run? Yes, let's do that. Johnson takes the direct snap after a quick rest and plows behind his blockers to get inside the 10 yard line.

9:53 - Touchdown Boise State, one yard untouched score for Ian Johnson. Wife shot #6 or 7 or 8 here. She's still pretty, Boise's still good. Boise State 35, Southern Miss 16

9:59 - More bearded men. Their cameramen have a thing for beards ...

10:00 - Southern Miss quarterback Jeremy Young just went down with an injury. Hopefully he's alright, looked like something near his shoetops was bothersome. Update: high ankle sprain. Good luck seeing him play in the next few weeks. Hellooooo, Steven Reaves.

10:14 - Things are slowing down here. Noting the scriptural ink on Marty Tadman's arms, Craig James has gone all pastor/preacher on us. Flutie joins in.

10:15 - Yet another wife shot. Normally I'd be annoyed but she's a pretty gal.

10:18 - Nice 4th down stop inside their own red zone there for Southern Miss. End of the third quarter.

10:27 -UHHHHHH. Complete pass, fumble, called incomplete on the field, reviewed, call on field stands. I'd bitch more about this, but I was wrong about the Temple game two weeks ago. Boise responds by fumbling their punt return. What a mess.

10:31 - What ... The ... ? Boise State player Vinny Perretta is in line at the Port-O-Potty. Don't they have restrooms in the locker room? I know construction's going on at the stadium, but ... ? Nice find, ESPN.

10:33 - Missed field goal for Southern Miss. That was their last chance to have any hope tonight. Time for both teams to sit on the ball here and ice this thing.

10:45 - Field goal Boise State. Boise State 38, Southern Miss 16. Boise's easily going to beat its 10/11 point favored status.

10:48 - Boise State strong safety Marty Tadman has 12 tackles tonight. That suggests that Boise didn't respect the Southern Miss tight end/passing game for that to happen. Plus Southern Miss just ran a lot.

10:53 - James to Flutie: "Think Ian Johnson's an NFL guy?" ... "Maybe. He might get into a camp and do something". Sounds about right, although as a friend with the knack for player evaluation tells me all the time: "talent can't judge talent". It's not an absolute, but Michael Jordan's a terrible evaluator of basketball ability in others, for example. Gotta go with your own opinions or those of others who you trust can evaluate players.

What is ironic is that Flutie called Johnson a bit smaller than he thought he was (or was that James?).

11:03 - Ballgame.
Second Half Live Blog: Southern Miss @ Boise State originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Thu, 27 Sep 2007 21:45:00 EST . My job here tonight is to draw eyeballs and clicks to FanHouse while writing about this Thursday night matchup between two non-BCS powerhouses. It's going to be a good one, however ...

Now stick with me here but I have a hunch - just a hunch, mind you - that the majority of you reading this (or potentially reading this) are going to be glued to something else on TV tonight. Like ... The Office season premiere, maybe?

Yeah I want to know how the Jim/Pam/Karen thing resolves itself too. I'd also like to see CSI and what happens to the abducted Sara Sidle. I hope she lives, she reminds me of someone I know and that's just heartbreaking to know she might die. And then there's other distractions I could care less for but steal my readers like Grey's Anatomy, Survivor, Earl, ER and other franchises. Dare I mention a sanitized version of Killing Me Softly, Forrest Gump, The Untouchables, CSI reruns on Spike, Beerfest, Spies Like Us and Field of Dreams?

My boss here isn't down with me waving the white flag so let's make a deal. You watch your shows, but also have the laptop handy or be near a computer to keep tabs with us over here as I update you about tonight's game. Sound good? Good. Also: don't tell me what happens in The Office or CSI. DO NOT WANT. I'm watching the game for you, remember? I've got the TiVo set, but until the game is over I'm in the dark about any other events on TV tonight so let's keep it that way.

Live Blog starts at 7:30 Eastern ~ ~ ~ Vitals, TV Info and Pregame Notes after the jump ...VITALS

- Southern Miss @ Boise State
- TV: 7:30 Eastern, ESPN
- Announcers: Doug Flutie, Craig James, Chris Fowler, Erin Andrews
- Boise State is favored by 11

- Phil Steele Facts (Southern Miss): This will be the 1st gm between the universities as SM is 36-16 vs current WAC schools. First trip west of Texas S/'03 opener at Cal. SM is 5-1 in their 3rd straight road game.

- Phil Steel Facts (Boise State): First meeting. Boise State is 13-1 all-time against current CUSA members. Coming into 2007, Boise St has won 11 straight non-conference home games.

PREGAME NOTES (Continuously Updated)

. . . Now's a good time to reveal I own a small portion of Boise's blue turf. A friend was working in Boise a few years ago, somehow ended up on the field and mailed me a few of the blue threads she "borrowed". Cool gift, no? . . . What's going on with Craig James' hair? It's like something from a 1950's TV news anchor . . . This time last year, Boise State was hosting Oregon State and nobody knew who Ian Johnson was. That all changed when Erin Andrews did a profile story on his unique crochet talent and wore one of his knit beanies . . .

7:49 - Southern Miss is calling its defense the "2007 Nasty Bunch"

7:50 - Touchdown, Boise State. That took all of four plays sprung by a long kickoff return to near midfield. Receiver Jeremy Childs was able to muscle his way for that touchdown after pulling in the pass at the three yard line. Boise State 7 - Southern Miss 0

7:55 - Man, Boise just finds ways to pump out pretty cheerleaders. The daughter of Southern Miss coach Jeff Bowers also cheered for their school a few years ago.

8:08 - Touchdown Boise State, again! This is looking easy. But maybe Southern Miss can pull a reverse Boise State and come back from down 14-0. Remember last year, Boise State trailed big against Oregon State before going on a touchdown fiesta. Boise State 14, Southern Miss 0

8:13 - Southern Miss needs to like, move the ball, man. Boise State's taking advantage of these short fields. Credit to ESPN for getting Boise State's coach to admit how important special teams were for his team and then we go out and watch the game and it's been the difference in this game.

8:16 - Crowd shots are always fun at Boise State. You're always bound to see a few bearded wonders. I think this is the place the malls go shopping for their Santa Claus.

8:17 - Three possessions, three punts for Southern Miss. A 21-0 hole is not where they want to be but that's where they're headed with Boise's third possession starting at their own 44.

8:19 - Ian Johnson is so deceptive in the open field. He caught a routine dump-off pas on third down and then did this silly lean left that completely sold a defender. Two steps right and a killer block later, Johnson had a nice gain and a first down. Everyone knows he's not the fastest guy around but he still finds ways to freeze defenders.

8:22 - Interception in the end zone, nice break for Southern Miss there. Nice play-action call, no safety on a throw to the end zone, just underthrown there. That one is most definitely on the quarterback but a good idea to bury Southern Miss early.

Those of you at home missed a funny scene ESPN had tape of. Two of Boise's offensive linemen decided to compete in a 100-yard race. There's nothing like big fat men running way farther than they should right? Anyway, one of the guys had loooong hair and said he'd cut it off if he lost.

He lost. Off went the hair. Ok so end of the first quarter, be back in a minute.

8:28 - The first sign that Souther Miss' offense sucks: pop-up passes. Any offense that mixes in more than the rarest of "500" type passes to get completions (think Florida State the last few years) is doomed to failure. Now it's all beginning to make sense.

8:32 - ESPN's been talking up Tharp's backup, Michael Coughlin. Sure enough, Boise's playing the youngster for a series as well as a handful of young tailbacks. Ian Johnson has nine carries for just 17 yards and just sprung himself for another 30 or so but was doomed by a holding penalty against his line.

8:34 - ESPN's giving Johnson's wife Chrissy Popadics the Posh Spice treatment with shots of her in the stands cheering. Like a good spouse she's wearing his uniform and some Posh-like shades. Can you be Hollywood in Boise, Idaho?

8:37 - Painted on the back of Boise's bench: "Taco Bell Arena". For reals? That's not the stadium name now, is it?

8:38 - Credit to both defenses. Star tailbacks Damion Fletcher and Ian Johnson have been completely shut down tonight aside from a handful of Johnson receptions.

8:39 - This is the second Thursday in a row the announcers are complaining about the press-box accomodations. Gentlemen: Boise's a nice place and all, but ... you're in Boise.

8:40 - Don't look now but Southern Miss is driving.

8:42 - Field goal good. With 10 minutes left in the second quarter, Boise State 14, Southern Miss 3

8:44 - I don't always agree with his opinions on some matters, but Doug Flutie is a great asset in the booth. He's really helpful in detailing some of the micro and macro issues involved with the quarterback position, reading defenses, offensive approach and players' mentality.

8:47 - I hope someone is recording this game. ESPN is showing a funny picture of Craig James looking silly on a horse. In real life he's a rancher/cowboy, owns some property in Texas (and possibly elsewhere). The horse's name is "Paint". ESPN then showed Boise's horse/Bronco, and he says "that's a gentle horse, you can see in its eyes". Now he's talking about putting his mother-in-law on his own horse because it's so gentle. Uh huh ...

8:49 - Outstanding (!!!) catch by frosh receiver Titus Young. Double move and then a Willie Mays-like catch over his shoulder. Someone get that on YouTube.

8:51 - Chrissy Popadics (errr, Johnson) shot #2 as Ian Johnson takes the inside handoff for a touchdown. Nice run, classic Ian Johnson there shaking a tackle and then muscling his way for the last five or so yards. Boise State 21, Southern Miss 3

8:56 - Southern Miss fumble, Boise State falls on it in Eagle territory. Boise might just put the game away here and now.

8:57 - Yep. Touchdown, Ian Johnson. Two easy runs there, toss left and sweep/outside zone run, the second of which took him to the end zone. Third (or fourth?) shot of the wife. She purty. Ok so should I even return for a Second Half Live Blog? It's Boise State 28, Southern Miss 3

8:59 - Good discussion here. The camera picks up Southern Miss' coach mouthing "that's so easy". Announcers talking about how basic those plays are. TRUE, but that's Boise's bread-and-butter. That's their identity in spite of all this trick play talk. They throw a lot of looks at you but are best at some basic runs that they're very familiar with running.

9:06 - Factoid of the night: Jimmy Buffett is a Southern Miss grad. Yep, and Barq's Root Beer is based in Biloxi. Do we need a MississippiFacts.com to keep us busy?

9:08 - "Is the blue turf any softer?" No clue, but Southern Miss' QB just took a nice hit there that almost popped his helmet off. Oh BTW, Touchdown Southern Miss. Shot of bearded man #3 tonight and Craig James is laughing all goofy for the millionth time tonight. Boise State 28, Southern Miss 10

9:10 - Video proof of Craig James dancing like ... he can't dance. It's getting weird in the booth right now. My colleague Brian Cook thinks James is high. Effortless, in fact. Oklahoma was stout in all elements of the game: solid against the run, great against the pass, solid running the ball and spectacular through the air. It was a complete performance and combined with their 79-10 beatdown of North Texas is a sign that this team means business.

We all realize Miami is down a bit, but they still have a lot of great players, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. I expected a comfortable Sooner win yesterday, not ... that. It wasn't like Miami was making mistakes up and down the field, either. They just got beat. Down. After down. After down. In that kind of situation, credit goes to the victors as they made it happen.

What's stunning is that Oklahoma is doing all this with a light-armed redshirt freshman at quarterback. He's playing like a clone of Jason White and Josh Heupel out there, hitting all the bread-and-butter underneath stuff but also connecting on the occasional deep ball. It's death by slant pass and until somebody proves they can stop it, Oklahoma's going to continue to roll people.

USC's still No. 1 in the polls, but their lead is going to narrow rapidly here after back-to-back whompings administered by both Oklahoma and LSU. Ladies and gentlemen, we now have our "narrative" for the year and it revolves around those three teams (particularly if Oklahoma beats Texas in a few weeks).

More Hangover after the jump ...
Other Big Stories

Boise State's win streak is over - It was bound to happen, but it's slightly more shocking that the Broncos were felled by once-great Washington, 24 to 10. Boise State was more in this game than the score indicated, but they never recovered from a pair of early turnovers that quickly put them behind 14-0.

Is Washington back? Eh ... but they're improved, right? We saw them start hot last year behind Isiah Stanback but collapsed after his injury. Annointed savior Jake Locker has provided an intriguing dual-threat element to their offensive attack and a suspect defense has held up so far.

Not to brag, but our own Sean Hawkins saw this coming.

Wild upsets and near-upsets - Saturday was wild, which is just how college football fans like it.

The night's biggest upset was South Florida's 26-23 toppling of Auburn. Both defenses were amazing most of the night while South Florida's kicker went one for five. Auburn elected for overtime with possession late and that proved folly after they kicked a field goal to start the extra period. South Florida avoided its shaky kicker and tossed a stunning touchdown pass to end the game and stun an otherwise raucous Auburn crowd.

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier makes up for a lack of SEC titles at his new school (so far) by getting a signature win or two every year. This year's victim? Georgia. Fresh off a solid win over Oklahoma State, the Bulldogs fell 16-12 in a nail-biter with both teams having a shot to win at the end.

Wisconsin got all it could handle from lowly UNLV, winning very late in the evening on a fourth-quarter 30+ yard score that provided the final 20-13 margin.

Middling Fresno State gave Texas A&M all it could handle in College Station before falling 47 to 45 in triple overtime. They had come back from an early 19-0 deficit.

Wake Forest almost took down Nebraska, losing 20 to 17 in the final minute. Score one for Crazy Lee Corso in seeing a close game there. An end zone interception did the Deacons in, blowing a chance to bury Nebraska with under two minutes left in the game.

UCLA held on against a solid BYU squad, 27-17. The Bruins had raced to a 20-3 lead before a BYU fourth-quarter rally brought the game to a 20-17 worryfest. UCLA's defense held firm, however, and the offense punched in a late score to hold off the Cougar charge.

Although the money men went with Michigan, the real green was with the Oregon Ducks. Sporting conservative white pants and white tops to go with their green helmets, the Ducks absolutely thrashed Michigan 39-7, with most of the damage done before halftime. Dennis Dixon looked like Vince Young at times, rocking the No. 10 uniform and running and diving all over around and through Michigan's defense.

Texas beat back a stiff challenge from TCU. The teams were knotted at 10-all heading into the fourth quarter before a Longhorn offensive explosive put the Horned Frogs away 34-13. It was closer than the score indicated.

Marshall led West Virginia for almost three quarters before the Mountaineer offense got untracked and pulled away 48 to 23. It was a lot closer than that, but the Thundering Herd saw the writing on the wall when West Virginia frosh tailback Noel Devine effortlessly scooted 12 yards for a touchdown to push West Virginia from a 27-23 lead to a 34-23 lead.

In easily one of the more surprising upset bids of the night, home underdog Louisiana Tech led Hawaii for most of the night before a late Warrior field goal forced overtime. Hawaii scored first to go up seven, then Tech answered with a touchdown. They went for two instead of the tie, but the winning pass was deflected and Hawaii escaped a major scare to keep their undefeated season and Colt Brennan's Heisman hopes alive.

I won't get into too great of detail for these, but several Big Ten teams got locked into tight battles with MAC foes. After a sluggish 2006, it looks like the MAC is back - or at least improved.

Cal survived a late scare for Colorado State to win 34 to 28, although the score may have been misleading:

The Golden Bears (2-0) needed all of his talents and more to fend off the Rams, who scored two touchdowns 53 seconds apart against backups to turn a 34-14 deficit into a 34-28 nail-biter with 2:54 remaining.

"It's a great lesson for us that the game's never over," Cal coach Jeff Tedford said. "We put some backup guys in that let some (receivers) get behind them. It's just a lesson that you have to practice hard every day to be prepared because you never know when your opportunity's going to come."

Florida State escaped UAB (the same team Michigan State pounded last week). The game was tied at 24-all in the third quarter before the Seminoles scored 21 in the quarter and 24 in the second half to pull away 34 to 24.

Dot Dot Dot ...

... West Virginia suffered the same defensive meltdown that plagued Louisville Thursday night, allowing 24 points in three quarters to offensively challenged Marshall. That's going to keep both teams out of the top three until they prove they can stop foes big and small ... Jimmy Clausen didn't fare so well in his first start, but he's for real. He won't get much better than he already is, but it's enough to be one of the most polished quarterbacks to come out of high school in the last 20 or so years. He's annoying, but that doesn't mean we can't acknowledge that he'll be a good one ... Moreso than last week, hot weather affected early afternoon games ... Kyle Wright looked like Miami's most effective quarterback. What a mess they're in with their passers ... Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford looks like the real deal. After barely beating two rivals for the starting job, he's been fantastic against both an awful defense (North Texas) and a great one (Miami) He's incredibly accurate ... According to FanHouse's Bruce Ciskie, inclement weather delays helped produce the longest halftime in college football history (Purdue/Eastern Illinois game) ... Penn State's PA guy tradition is chumpy ... LSU fans don't realize it's only September. Anyone else notice the FUSC sign at GameDay? Obsess much? ... Nebraska cornerback Zach Bowman got some sweet redemption after snagging the game-saving endzone interception against Wake Forest. He has missed the last two seasons with serious knee injuries and it's miraculous he's even on the field this early in the 2007 season ... Oklahoma fans are talking redemption for the 1980's losses to Miami, but let's be honest here: these teams weren't on the level yesterday. They were in the 80's and Miami won when both were on top of the world. This wasn't redemption, but it was nice just the same ... Boston College won the O'Brien Bowl, besting their former coach 37-17 ... Don't look now but there's another athletic tight end in the Big Ten worth watching who isn't named Travis Beckum: Iowa's Tony Moeaki. He hauled in 8 passes for 112 yards (52 long) and three touchdowns Saturday ... Notre Dame and Michigan are both 0-2 ... Poor Mike Hart. It's almost like he plays better in defeat than victory, making like Atlas trying to carry the entire Michigan program on his back in tough times ... Jorvorskie Lane had similar heroics in Texas A&M's triple overtime victory over Fresno State. Dude was absolutely exhausted but refused to go down in entirely predictable run situations. Take a load off, big fella. You earned it ...

Looking Ahead

Thursday: West Virginia @ Maryland (I'll be Live Blogging that, be sure and stop by)

Friday: Oklahoma State @ Troy

Saturday: Pittsburgh @ Michigan State, Iowa @ Iowa State (always close rivalry game), Tennessee @ Florida, Texas @ UCF (home opener in a new stadium for UCF), Notre Dame @ Michigan (combined 0-4 records!), FIU @ Miami (Fight Night II), Ohio State @ Washington (upset alert?), UCLA @ Utah, Southern Miss @ East Carolina, Louisiana Tech @ California (hey, they slowed down Hawaii!), Arkansas @ Alabama, Fresno State @ Oregon, Louisville @ Kentucky (it was a wild affair last year), USC @ Nebraska, Boston College @ Georgia Tech (rare quality ACC game), BYU @ Tulsa, Hawaii @ UNLV (UNLV pretty much shut down Wisconsin and Hawaii is back on mainland where they're vulnerable), San Jose State @ Stanford (combined 0-3, someone's gotta win), Florida State @ Colorado (this would have been awesome in ohhhh, 1991).

Parting Shots

Michigan is not really, really, really bad. They're a good football team with its confidence shaken. They've also gone up against a perfect storm of chippy underdogs running spread offenses with mobile quarterbacks. It's now crystal clear Michigan cannot defend the spread, but they should continue to be able to mash conventional attacks which are aplenty throughout college football. Give Oregon and Appalachian State some credit. Oregon does that all the time in Pac-10 play, and they've handled Michigan before. Appalachian State just didn't know they were supposed to lose. Michigan will recover, and they're a good to very good football team if they can get their heads straight.

I'm reading a book right now about Bo Schembechler. There are a lot of positives about him, but I can see the seeds of Michigan's fall in his enduring philosophy. He harped incessantly on execution and its ability to overpower "fancy" schemes. That is true sometimes, but not all the time.

Michigan has been so arrogant and inflexible and wedded to its style of defense they have not humbled themselves enough to learn how to defend that style of play. It's clearly cost them and unless they shake some of that Schembechler stubbornness and get with the times a little more, that will continue to happen. But his philosophy is also what keeps that program at the top, so there's competing demands here and coach Lloyd Carr hasn't figured out how to harmonize them.

Finally ... My friend Victor mentioned something interesting to me yesterday. He was talking about bandwagon fans and how people jump in for the ride of a good team. Well, that can also work with failing teams. He thinks a lot of people are jumping on Michigan's "bandwagon" and watching their games. It isn't so much out of hate (unless you're a Buckeye or Notre Dame fan), but rather amusement. "It's hilarious" he says. And as much as I admire the Michigan program, he's right - it's hilarious.

At the same time I think they've endured enough. Hopefully they can win some games and get people off their back and their bandwagon and get around to resurrecting the pride and prestige of one of college football's great programs.

Sunday College Football Hangover: Week Two originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sun, 09 Sep 2007 16:39:00 EST . They're particularly nice at a place like Boise State and when they include miraculous and magical Fiesta Bowl wins over Oklahoma.

But that's all for naught as upstart Washington (!) has felled the Broncos today, 24 to 10.

Washington got off to a hot start, converting a pair of Boise State turnovers. The teams played evenly otherwise, but the Broncos were unable to answer with the necessary scores to catch up. So poof! goes the nation's longest winning streak. They were last defeated 27-21 on the final play in the 2005 MPC Computers Bowl by Boston College.

The Broncos' legacy is intact, though. If you watched Oregon's dismantling of Michigan today, the Ducks used not one but two "Statue of Liberty" plays with great success against the Wolverines. Wonder where tho they got that from?

As for the Huskies, they now have two more wins than anybody expected they'd have this year. The rest of the season is playing with house money, if you will. Anointed savior Jake Locker has looked solid and their emergence makes an already difficult Pac-10 all the more competitive this year.
Boise State's Win Streak Is Over originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Sat, 08 Sep 2007 18:51:00 EST . One of those games where, if you didn't give up on it, you still remember where you were or what you were doing when things finally ended. Boise State shook up the establishment by toppling BCS power Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl, the epitome' of David slaying Goliath. What a magic carpet ride it's been for the Broncos of Boise State, and what do you know, they bring the nation's longest winning streak of 14 into Husky Stadium tomorrow. But is this amazing run from a relative newcomer on the national scene about to end?

The Broncos still have All-American running back Ian Johnson as the focal point of the offense, and he didn't disappoint in the opener last week, tearing through hapless Weber State for 128 yards on only 18 carries. The offensive line is absolutely loaded, with four out of five starters back from 2006. Junior tackle Ryan Clady is regarded as one of the top NFL offensive line prospects in the nation. But this year, it's hard to ignore the loss of so many key players from last year's amazing run. Even with Johnson and the bulk of the offensive line back, they still lost six offensive starters from '06, including QB Jared Zabransky and his top four receivers. Senior Taylor Tharp is Zabransky's replacement, and he had a good debut last week, completing over 70% of his passes as the Broncos played it close to the vest against a much weaker opponent.

On defense, they return six starters, but two of their top three tacklers are gone in LB's Korey Hall and Colt Brooks. That senior duo "only" combined for 167 tackles, 10 sacks and eight interceptions last year. Those are some big shoes to fill off a pretty good defense. All-WAC safety Marty Tadman, the defensive MVP from last year's Fiesta Bowl, is the leading returning tackler with 67 and was tops on the team with six interceptions in '06. The best defensive player on Boise State's roster, he's sliding down to strong safety from his normal spot at free safety.

Where UW is going to have an advantage tomorrow is the running game. As good as Ian Johnson was for Boise State last week, UW's Louis Rankin was even better, going for 147 yards on an impressive 8.6 yards per carry. Overall the Huskies drilled the Orange to the tune of 302 yards rushing last week, and that spells bad news for Boise State's defense.

Finally, UW's defense rose to the occasion last week, completely shutting down Syracuse's offense and making the debut of QB Andrew Robinson a very long night. The Husky front-seven was physical, quick, and brought the heat, limiting Syracuse to just eight rushing yards, 199 yards of total offense and only 12 points.

All week long, the Seattle media has been heaping praise on Boise State. One columnist even goes as far as to call them "The Gonzaga of College Football". The Boise State faithful have reportedly been buying up available tickets for the game tomorrow, and are said to be traveling in large numbers to Seattle. They are hardly an overwhelming favorite at 3 1/2 points, but still, they are the favorite. But when you combine the fact that they've never beaten a BCS team on the road, and Tharp is making his first road start with a very green group of WR's in noisy Husky Stadium? It's starting to feel like Boise State is walking into a trap.

While it's hard to say that UW has moved back on the plus side of the NCAA football relevance meter, they did look awfully impressive last week. More than just the stats or the points or whatever else, you could see UW's confidence is at another level compared to year's past. I don't know if it's Jake Locker and the confidence the young kid brings to the rest of the team, or the fact that they are tired of three straight losing seasons, but things are very different this year.

It's been a fun ride, and they made a lot of fans and earned a ton of respect last year, but it all should end tomorrow for Boise State. Not that it will be a blowout, but I believe UW will wear down BSU's undersized defensive front-seven and run away from the Broncos in the second half. Defensively UW will focus all their energy on slowing down Ian Johnson and putting Tharp in obvious passing situations. In the end, that will be enough. UW will ride the running game and emotional home crowd to a 27-23 victory.

Is Boise State's Magical Run About to End? originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Fri, 07 Sep 2007 19:46:00 EST . It would be the first American college football game in China. [snip]

Oregon must complete many steps before the matchup is a done deal. The Ducks have no contract with Boise State to play the game in China. No permission from the Chinese government. No funding.

To pay for the trip, the team probably would need to secure a corporate sponsorship or raise money by selling the game's TV rights, [Oregon Director of Football Operations Jeff] Hawkins said.

"Right now, we're exploring the feasibility of this," Hawkins said. "But to make this happen would be historic."

Oregon already has secured the NCAA's permission to pursue scheduling a game in China.

If it happens, the game would be one year after the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Oregon is scheduled to play at Boise State on Sept.5, 2009, which is why the Ducks thought of the Broncos first as potential travel partners.

Gene Bleymaier, athletic director at Boise State, declined comment.

He proposed to her on national television immediately after helping defeat Oklahoma in a much-celebrated David over Goliath slaying.

Although Johnson is rarely seen doing anything but smiling and winning, this kind of, totally, sucks:

Johnson said he's received phone calls, 30 letters and, in some instances, personal threats from people who objected to his plans to marry Popadics.

"You take it for what it is -- the less educated, the less willing to change," Johnson told the Statesman. "But we're not acting like we're naive to all the stuff that's going on. We know what's been said. We're going to make sure we're safe at all times. It's an amazing day for us, and we'd hate to have it ruined by someone."

Johnson is now under some form of protection to ensure nothing crazy goes on at his wedding. Hopefully everything goes off without a hitch and Johnson keeps on smiling and scoring touchdowns while officially starting a new wife with the soon-to-be Mrs. Johnson.

(Via: DeadSpin)
Ian Johnson's Wedding: Great. In November.

Hawaii.

Hawaii.

Downside: I'm unwilling to do the math at the moment but the show would have something like a 1 a.m. local start time. Nothing says poor execution like a visual TV show set in paradise but filmed in the pitch black of morning hours. Also, Herbie and crew might be a little sluggish working their way through the show and subsequent early-morning football. GameDay has enough troubles making its way out west for those 6 a.m. starts, I can imagine the expenses, challenge of recreating the set and insurance issues for a trip across the Pacific Ocean into paradise weigh heavily against this. We all know what happened in last year's wild Fiesta Bowl, but somehow this video leaves you hanging just the same. Brilliant and funny at the same time.

Take special notice of the agonizing parallel parking efforts, played back suspiciously at about 3/4 speed.

We do a good job of game planning and narrowing things down and not having too much overage so these kids have to learn so many things that we're not even going to call in the game. And so I know a lot of people kind of pride themselves on having this humongous playbook, having all these plays going into a game. We don't - we narrow it down so these kids can manage it and learn it and execute it.
Ok so this isn't alllll that surprising, but Boise's earned a rep as being one of the most difficult teams to prepare for. Sometimes it isn't so much about the number of plays but the overall design of a few ones. There's a zen lesson here but it's way too late to get into all of that.

What we do know is that this means more killer, less filler for those blue turfed warriors from the land of potato.

I encourage you to consume - not-so-Kobayashi-style - the rest of Petersen's interview with CSTV. Well, yes, literally: Jerry Rice has never been convicted of any sort of sex crime [or suspected of one! -AOL Legal] and is thus allowed to take his children to school. In fact, one of his kids is starting to be recruited by colleges, so Rice showed up at a recent Rivals combine and was cajoled into participating in one of the drills by onlookers. The lucky opponent was Arizona cornerback Marc Anthony and the result was this:

Friends of his at Zocalo said Zabransky, the son of a potato farmer, used to throw potatoes and could hurl them 80 yards.
The Post flits off into the night, a job well done. Now the intrepid readers of New York have all the information they need about quarterbacks in Idaho. I mean, how else would they learn how to throw? I hear Ian Johnson's beanies are actually knitted out of hash browns. Does well with pre-snap reads. Able to create if the play breaks down. Shows the ability to lead and manage an offense. Very confident. Will need to add strength. Sloppy footwork and mechanics. Runs hot and cold. Has the instincts and leadership ability to become an NFL quarterback, but he will force the ball into coverage at times and may have too much confidence for some.

PROBABLY GETTING DRAFTED

Second day or possibly undrafted. My guess is some GM will get sentimental about his Fiesta Bowl experience and grab him in the seventh round at the latest. Having Zabransky on the roster brings media goodwill and fan attention to training camp which isn't a bad thing for a league tired of bad attention. Maybe the Bengals will grab him?

GUY WHO WATCHED HIM FOR FOUR YEARS SAYS

His measurables are unimpressive but he's compensated with leadership and over three years of starting experience in a challenging offensive system. Zabransky's makeup is unusual in that he can run incredibly hot and incredibly cold. His legacy will forever be the Fiesta Bowl but I haven't forgotten the six-turnover first half meltdown against Georgia just 16 months earlier.

"Z" definitely has a shot to make it in the NFL because he understands the game, has confidence and the inevitable draft snub will give him the extra chip on his shoulder to go out and work hard to make it in the league. His lack of measurables, streaky play and poor (if coachable) mechanics tell me he probably won't be much a reliable starter anywhere but can probably emerge as a backup somewhere and get the occasional start.
College Eye for the NFL Guy: Jared Zabransky originally appeared on NCAA Football FanHouse on Wed, 25 Apr 2007 21:56:00 EST .
