It's clear the state of Alabama doesn't value education as highly as it does winning football games. That's the biggest conclusion you can draw from the decision of Alabama's flagship state university to, wait for it, shut down classes from Jan. 6-8 for the BCS Title Game. If you've ever wondered why the state of Alabama ranks 44th in percentage of college graduates at 20.6 percent, it's decisions like this one.
The news of canceled classes arrived via an email sent to students. In making the decision, the university cited the number of students who must be in Pasadena for the game and the number of faculty and students who will be attending the title game, played on a Thursday night.
What Alabama did not cite is the fact that far less students must be at the game than must be at a fraternity or sorority's formal each year. Is Alabama also prepared to alter the academic calendar for the Kappa Sigs? At most 150 students must be at the national championship game, that's players, managers, and assorted student-trainers affiliated with the team (a robust .00517 of the 29,000 that comprise the student body). And believe me that 150 student number is generous. The rest of the students and faculty who are going to the game are choosing to skip class. That's fine. If I was an Alabama student and had the money, I'd go to Pasadena for the game too. But that doesn't mean that the university should alter their academic calendar to make that easier for me or anyone else.
Why not?
Because it sends the wrong message to kids who aspire to go to college at Alabama's flagship university one day. It's all well and good to know the speed of light is 299,792,458 m/s, but you know what's even better than being able to apply that number for a tough physics equation?
Being able to run a 4.4 40.
You know what distinguishes those talents? One is given at birth, the other is earned.
Which one is more prized in Alabama?
One of the most important things you learn in college is how to handle the consequences of your decisions. You don't get to have your cake and eat it, too. If you decide to go halfway across the country for a football game while class is in session, then you have to be prepared for the consequences of making that decision. That might involve missing out on class and making a lower grade than you otherwise would. It might mean that you get stuck in a crappy class for a semester because you didn't get to audit it and switch to a better one.
So be it.
You'd be able to balance out an awful class with a great time in California. And in the process your state wouldn't be sending a message that it sends all too often, education isn't that important compared to sports. As it is, your state's flagship university has taken the unprecedented step of canceling classes for three days for a football game. If someone can point me to another school in the BCS era that has made this decision, I'll be happy to rip them too. But they haven't.
And it's not just a message that Alabama is sending to its own state, it also resonates across the country and impacts how the South is perceived. We already have an image problem, decisions like this just offer further credence to the idea that we are a region run of redneck idiots. Ultimately, Alabama's decision devalues all SEC degrees, one of which I happen to hold, and makes us all look bad. That would be the case no matter what state made this decision.
But when it's Alabama, already 44th in the nation? The message is even more startling and awful. Especially for those that aren't old enough for college.
Need more on the message that you're sending and its trickle down impact on the value of education to younger students? Tuscaloosa city and private schools are considering shutting down for the games as well. How many parents in Birmingham are going to have fights with their sons and daughters over going to elementary school on the day of the game? To their credit, Alabama's faculty has joined in on the criticism. Pointing out, quite rightly, that 95 percent of the students and faculty at Alabama won't be going to the game. Indeed, the university decision is primarily a gift to the richest students at the school.
You know, those students whose parents can afford to send them across the country via air or car, find them a place to stay for multiple days, pay for food and lots of drinks, get tickets that will cost a ton on the open market -- StubHub's cheapest current seat is going for $900, none of this travel is cheap. In fact, it's so expensive that virtually no college kid can pay for all of this out of his or her own pocket.
Nope, mommy and daddy are footing the bill.
Add it all up and some Alabama students will be spending more on their trip to Pasadena than they spend on tuition for the spring semester.
Don't believe me?
Tuition at Alabama for the spring semester is $3,500.
And finally, let's not let the president of the university, Dr. Robert E. Witt, off on this decision. Because, you know, it's university presidents who oppose the idea of a college football playoff because it would impact academics too much. And it's Dr. Witt who made the ultimate and unprecedented call to cancel classes for three days at the university. Thank God that won't impact academics at all.
Right.
Meanwhile, isn't it amazing that the BCS ends up impacting college academics anyway?
Or as they would say in Alabama: Ain't that a purty irony?
I called Dr. Witt at Alabama with a simple question, "Are you in favor of a college football playoff?"
He didn't get back to me.
He's probably too busy working on the University of Alabama's new marketing slogan.
Come to the University of Alabama, we play football.

Why are you crying? Do you go to school in ALABAMA and if not shut up and move own with your life. I for one do not see this as a problem and they are going to make it up. And yes my daughter went to ALABAMA and now is in Law School in Arkansas and I live in Texas. This will not affect their education at all it's just something for someone like you to start. Get a life.
Good for you. You made a very, very wise choice living in Texas. However, from reading your statement, it is obvious you were educated in Alabama!
What's the big deal. Most of the students at Alabama can barely read or write anyway, while the majority of them believe we evolved from under a fig leaf.
CLAY, CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE WRITTEN THE BEST ARTICLE THT I HAVE READ IN AOL SPORTS THIS YEAR!
You are right missing a day or two out of school is not going to affect the out come of their future. In addition, for some to say it will may not have been educated anywhere. Anyway its not that serious.
you tell them! I mean the thing was that....9 time out of ten student were going to ditch classes for the game. And with it being out of state...this just gives them the alternative to go if they want and still make up their classes. As a family member of a student and a tide fan...I proudly say....shut the hell up if you know not what you talk about!
Completely agree with you. Alabama is a great school and has done well with academics and athletics. 2 days from class to make it up later is no sin. For those that don't agree it sounds like sour grapes for their success this year.
PLEASE! I'm an Auburn fan, but I can understand why UA would want the students to have a chance to go to the game. As long as they make the days up, what does it matter? I take it you have never ditched school or work for a day or two of fun? And if you have not, LOOSEN UP!
I agree it IS a big deal....this does not happen and for anyone at the University it is a once in a lifetime chance. Quit bitchin and show some support for a great team.....or are you a bigot and hate southern schools....you are wasting your employer's money trung to stir up a bunch of crap...shut up, gi home and die! ROLL-TIDE!!
Or... try and think this out, I know attending a community college must be a big step up for you, but if students want to go to the game, they can. If they want to take those couple days off and do whatever, they can. Why do you care so much about what UA does anyways? Is it affecting your life at all? Doubt it. Believe this or not, but not everyone is supported by "mommy and daddy". Some college students actually pay their own way through school and whatever else THEY CHOOSE to do. Wow, shocking isn't it?
It doesn't even matter if they shut down at the beginning of the semester. Nothing hardly gets down this early. As a college student the begininng of the semester is feeling out your professor and going over the damn course in general. Plus you don't even have the same classes every day. You have different classes every other day. So you won't even miss much school work. Move on with your life.
Yea, I know how college works. If I even gave a damn about what you thought... I still wouldn't ask, because I just don't care.. Simple? Good
I'm a little more ok with it for a national championship game. I know the when Florida State and Miami used to play each other on Thursday night, that Friday would routinely be a day off. That's back in early September.
Yeah, this is just another way for AOL to get people to read their silly articles. I don't think it is that big of a deal to have 2 days off, especially at the beginning of the semester and they are going to have make up days. But I have a question. Will they also declare a statewide day of mourning when Texas wins the National Championship? Just wondering. Oh and you 'Bama fans should buy plenty of tissues. You'll all be looking like Tebow did after Texas is through with you. GET YO' POPCORN READY!!! P.S.: You don't need to send me a personal email. This is all in fun. Looking forward to a great game. Go Longhorns!!!!!!!!
This is a whole lot about nothing,it's not that often a college gets to play for a NC, Let the kids have some fun. there's still plenty of time for school and the real world, BTW Alabama has 7 USA All-American Academic this year, Alabama ranks as one of the top 50 public universites and offers Bachelor,Masters, as well as Doctoral degrees, and yeah we do play a little football.some folks are just mad because their team can't beat our team.
Funny how this reporter finds Alabama the only college putting football in front of academics. You can't get a little pregnant! When other major programs in the country are getting popped for all sorts of violations, this is the best you can do. The Tide is going to the National Championship Game and classed are cancelled for two days. Stop the madness! What are the kids missing "splitting the atom"?
I agree... I guess clay also doesn't realize that two of top three academic All-American out of the whole SEC where from Alabama against schools like Vanderbilt.
Also do some research on some of the top medical and engineering schools in the country and you will find Alabama, Auburn, South Alabama, UAB. And maybe they don't pass because so many people atempt to go the college and drop out because it is too hard for them... but these schools gave them a chance to even go.
Yes, I guess if you cull your students like Stanford, Yale, UCONN, Duke, Notre Dame, etc and only except students you know are going to pass then you will achieve high graduation rates.
The more and more I read these immature sports writers twisted views the more I lose faith in journalism.
Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill! My god, this is possibly/probably a once in a lifetime opportunity/memory for these kids before they go out into trhe real world. Lighten up a little bit. If taking a few days off is the worst thing that you can come up with then the situation isn't so bad. If this game was being played in New Orleans, or Miami it would not be a as big a deal due to travel. My daughter is out of school starting this Friday and doesn't return until 1/18. She's also a D3 athlete who has to manueuver her schedule to play her chosen sport while taking a pre-med curriculum. She misses class occassionally, and makes it up. Love it when people get on their high horse and write a baseless article like this. By the way, I'm a Pennsyvania resident, so I'm not an SEC or 'Bama fan backing my school, just someone with perspective in my opinion.
Can't say that I'm too shocked of such a baseless and pointless article coming from someone that's apparently a Tennessee fan. Still sour over that 12-10 loss, are you? Hey, here's an idea ... why not write an article about the NCAA's investigation into Tennessee's possible recruiting violations instead of trying to slam the University of Alabama for giving their students a few days off .... which, btw, they have to make up.
Ummm are you mad because these kids can afford to go across the country for a football game and you cant or that mommy and daddy didnt pay for everything when you went to college. Eldungo is right when Florida State and Miami play they shut down classes for 2 days and I could bet they would be doing the same thing if their teams were playing in the National Championship. Are you even a fan of football? Do you know what the game means to the Universities involved??? I mean Alabama got 7 All- American Academic players this season. Those guys work hard for what they have achieved both on the field and off. Who are you to cut them down for going 13-0 in a season and play for a National Championship? Please get off your high horse and let the State of Alabama, the University of Alabama and the fans have their year. If this was reversed and it was Texas or Florida or USC there wouldnt be an article about it.
