GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes has had his suspension for apparently trying to gouge the eyes of a Georgia running back increased to a full game.Coach Urban Meyer says it was in the best interest of the team for Spikes to serve a full-game suspension when the top-ranked Gators play Vanderbilt on Saturday.
Meyer had faced some criticism for only suspending his All-American linebacker for only the first half the Vandy game. The Southeastern Conference accepted the original punishment.
Spikes stuck his hand into the facemask of Georgia's Washaun Ealey during Florida 41-17 victory against the Bulldogs last week. There was no penalty called at the time, but Meyer went back and looked at the play of tape and decided to punish Spikes.

Easy Urban, this guy is going to be an eye doctor, you surely are not going to sit him down he was just checking to see if the guy had eyes worth working on! Oh and thanks NCAA more stand up for the big guys. Go Gators
Spikes Should BE OFF THE TEAM! And if left to me he would be kicked out of the School also. And NOT allowed to Play with any other NCAA TEAM's
thats why you dont coach you couldnt make decision
No excuse is sufficient... Spikes should be GONE!
Glad to see that Meyer has come to his senses. Most unbiased analysts said from the start that it should have been a whole game to send a message that retaliation is not acceptable.
and I just bet you are unbiased too ?? Give me a break you little Gator hater ! And that is what this is actually all about. Why don't you seem to care about all the dirty plays Georgia had on the Gators----guess you are just trying to show how unbiased you are on that too !!!
I am a Gator sayitlikeitis and I was one of the first to point out Georgia's dirty play. Check out the 3rd comment at http://kevin-blackistone.fanhouse.com/2009/11/02/florida-turns-blind-eye-to-eye-gouge/. Urban opened us up to a lot of criticism by only making it a half game suspension and I think he knows it now. Nobody's perfect. Just tring to Say It Like It Is.
Why all the hype? Just another unflagged personal foul. Even the "victim" said Spikes shouldn't be suspended.
brrrk,
"No excuse is sufficient--Spikes should be gone "---could you make it any more clearer that you are a Gator Hater ??? Now all that needs to be established is are you a fan of a team the Gators have beaten or just one that we are about to play. ??
we are you on the team
Not true.... This is unsportsman-like conduct that borders on assault. Sorry, bad behavior of this nature is what it is. Ask yourself this, just what was Spikes goal? To blind the guy?
cecil,
and should we put him in prison and throw away the key---or is that not enough either Gator Hater !!!
Looks like this could be Tebow's chance to play linebacker and boost his chances for the Heisman!
GET OVER IT! Spikes suspended himself FOR his team! IF YOUR going to talk TRASH....REMEMBER..The UGA player sided with Spikes...WHY...because HE was at fault TOO and Nick WIlliams late hit on Tebow (VERY LATE HIT) was what NO BIG deal...ummm that UGA player knew....Tebow had alreay suffered a head injury...what was UGA trying to HELP him with another...YOU people GET real....IT HAPPENS ON ALL TEAMS....INCLUDING YOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I also agree that for the Georgia player to side with Spikes that he knows things were going on that were dirty from both teams---and you will never convince me that the Georgia player had not done the same to Spikes ( and that's why he defended Spikes )---I agree with your accessment.
What a joke the whole gator team is a joke they cannot win without cheating
Ron Perry .........Cheating???? LMAO you are an idiot! If anyone was there at the game they would know that Georgia was taking more cheap shots than anyone: Spikes getting his eye gouged and helmet ripped off twice, Very late hit to Tebow whom didnt even have the ball when hit. There was much more and none of it makes it right for Spikes to do that but he had had enough BS and took matter into his own hands. The officials should have been throwing flags way more than they did!
Oh yeah, he's just a poor kid that was stickin up for himself. Somebody called him a name or pushed him too hard so he decided the right thing to do was poke the other guys eyes out. Maybe Meyer and some of these teams should stop recruiting players with this type of mentality. Spikes isn't playing this week because they are playing a team they know they will beat. Would he play if this was Alabama? You bet he would. Whatever it takes to win including poking somebodies eyes out. Wonder if they will have a rash of Florida little league football players trying to poke each other in the eye this week.
Spikes should be kicked out of college football. He knew exactley what he was doing..He is just like a politician thinking I am sorry will get it. I think it should cost him his career.
