DALLAS -- Colt McCoy did it all with a sore thumb. Colt McCoy also had lost his voice during the week because of a cold. Colt McCoy saved the game with a tackle. A tackle from a quarterback! This is why headlines and highlights aren't enough. Texas beat Oklahoma 16-13 Saturday to go 6-0 and keep up its run toward the national championship in its System Stinks Redemption Tour.
But when you watch the recap on ESPN and hear the fairy tale of McCoy, keep this in mind:
He wasn't any good.
And Texas? Worse.
The Longhorns are a long, long way from being a legit national championship team. Sure, the fun and pageantry of the rivalry were great, as always. You walk through the state fair, past signs that say "Welcome to the fried food capital of Texas," where you decide that the diet can handle fried dough better than fried butter. The stadium neatly packs OU fans on one half, Texas on the other, totaling 96,000.
So for history and for personal meaning, this was a big moment.
But the game? Bad.
Texas? Worse.
"We're in the same spot we were this time last year,'' Texas coach Mack Brown said. "We're not going to let the system dictate to us."
Oh god. Brown is still blubbering about last year. Listen, it's true that Texas beat Oklahoma last year. Then, Texas lost to Texas Tech. So OU got to play in the Big 12 title game and then for the national title.
Texas felt it should have gone. So Brown has made a mission of saying that Texas wouldn't allow that to happen again this year. Yes, it's easy to motivate players with shallow stuff like that.
But I'm not sure how Boise State and Utah feel about Texas whining about the system. Texas is going to get a nice, high BCS ranking when the year's first computer numbers come out Sunday, but the team isn't that good.
The system and the voters always favor the big boys, like Texas. At this point, it appears rigged to put this mediocre team without a running game into the title game against the SEC champ.
"We ran for 142 yards,'' Brown said. "The fact that we ran the ball this well is really exciting to me."
OK, fine. Brown said that his team needs to enjoy the win, that the fun of winning big games is taken away because of the system. So we focus on what's wrong and focus on upsets more than joy.
Honestly, that's exactly what I'm doing. Texas can't run the ball, has an average offensive line and a runner-up Heisman Trophy quarterback in McCoy who saved the game because he threw an awful interception with six minutes left, then made a tackle.Maybe I should be focusing on the good, the win. But what I can't get out of my mind was the way McCoy kept overthrowing people. He completed 21 of 39 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown. He also threw an interception and fumbled after a long run.
And this Oklahoma team is a shell of its old self. It has a fast, good defense, but lost a bunch of players from last year's team, and has only one player on offense:
Quarterback Sam Bradford, the Heisman winner from last year. Bradford has missed time this year with a separated shoulder, and was knocked out of Saturday's game in the first quarter with a shoulder injury, too.
Best guess: He's done for the year. And if he wants to have an NFL career, he had better come back to OU next year for his senior season.
His stock has crashed this year.
But the point is, Texas barely won, looked bad doing it, and beat a shaky team without its one good offensive player. So do you take joy in beating Oklahoma, Texas fans, and going to 6-0? Or do you worry about the bigger picture?
Or both?
"The good thing,'' McCoy said, "is we know we haven't played up to our potential. It might be scary if we start playing really well.''
This is a process. Give the Longhorns that. But they struggled for a half last week against lowly Colorado, and this OU team, 3-3, is the best team they've beaten.
Receiver Marquise Goodwin, still in the development stages, made some great catches and has amazing, Olympics-like speed. Brown said he'll be good this year.
McCoy had success with the QB draw, something Brown had held back until the big game. Fozzy Whittaker did have a couple of nice runs.
But the stars on offense are supposed to be receiver Jordan Shipley and McCoy. We heard all week about how great Shipley is, how he might actually deserve Heisman consideration.
He caught four passes for 22 yards. Total. And he dropped a punt return, not recovering it until field position was lost.
And McCoy's interception late, when Texas should have been putting the game away, was ugly. Brown said it was a miscommunication with the receiver. But OU defensive back Dominique Franks said he knew the pass would be intercepted before it was thrown.
Franks said that OU had studied film, and knew right where McCoy was going to throw even before he did. Brian Jackson made the interception.
McCoy saved the day on a tackle we'll surely see on highlights as a sign of his greatness.
"It's a game you try to win,'' Brown said. "You don't try to blow out.''
The system, the thumb, progress and no desire to win by blowout.
And I thought Texas simply looked bad. But the coaches poll already has these guys No. 2 in the country. And when the computer comes out Sunday, look for this lousy system to show the Longhorns even more love.

Who do you root for? Florida played horrible today against a bad Arkansas team. BRADFORD WOULD GO #1 IF HIS SEASON IS DONE AND HE CHOOSES TO ENTER THE DRAFT. You think he doesn't have a NFL career right now? Really? He is the best QB in the nation and the pros know it. Alabama is #1 right now, Texas should be #2 until they lose, Florida is #3, Boise #4, and USC #5. Oklahoma is a good offense without Bradford and this article is ignorant.

I love younger men. I have dated only men at least 10 years younger and as much as 17 years younger than me for many years. I love the energy and a nice tight bod. Older men just aren't the same, different mentality. I seem to have more in common with younger guys. They're actually more fun and are usually more interested in me. I'm flattered. I think younger men like cougars because they have no agenda, don't usually want to get married and are usually very independent and don't need a man to take care of them. I meet younger men on this website:

Who is Greg Crouch? I have no idea if he has ever followed the Red River tradition...but on any given Saturday....any team can win. Let's break this down....OU still has their defense....no one expected a cake walk...besides Colt being sick, give the horns a break...at least they didnt let the crooked refs in the SEC decide the outcome of the fl/ark game, but for heavens sake...the horns are weak?....to even think tha that boise st and idaho are in the same league? Greg, you obviously have an issue with the horns that should prevent you from ever being printed on aol in the future...

Man someone has an issue with the longhorns... shouldve mentioned the defenses on both teams, they played really well instead of complaining about what brown said about random issues. Next time Greg you should probably watch the actual game instead of the highlights.

Good write up. You called it as you saw it. Texas is overated and this was a sloppy poorly played college football game. The UT faithful will never admit this fact and I hope that they realize that rest of the country is tired of the relentless whining coming out of Texas. Shut up, play some quality football and you will earn our respect. Until then, Mr writer you are correct in your assessment. Great article.

FGS1010, these two Teams have 2 of the highest rated DEFENSES. You and sportcasters called them sloppy turnovers and give no credit to the Defenses actually causing the turnovers. You know nothing about the Rivalry. It never really matters which Team is ranked higher than the other. You idiots stick to rooting for your own team and stop crying that the Horns or Sooners do not deserve being ranked higher than yours...."That is why you are really posting here, isn't IT?" We are ranked higher than yours.

You are right about the Longhorns...they are overrated this year...but last year they were underrated. I have lived out of Texas for 21 years and have realized that everyone HATES Texas/Texans. Including you. You are all JEALOUS of Texas...we don't whine but there is bias with media-based teams ...whenever Texas sports teams play another non-Texas sport team, everybody wants Texas to LOSE. When is the last time you rooted for a Texas team? Hip-hip-hooray to your transparency.

Why does everyone think that Bradford is so good? Bradford will never make it in the NFL, the dude is just to slow. He will be just another OU floop. Yes I know about Peterson, but OU was his second choice. He wanted to play at Texas, but Mack would not start him.

Well, sir, if you were actually watching the game you would have noticed that the last interception McCoy threw was the receivers fault. Three cheers for jumping to conclusions!!!!

You are so right espinozassp!! Greg may think of himself as a journalist, but his lack of objectivity and professionalism is highly evident. He sounds like a Longhorn hater instead of an objective writer. I wonder if he even watched the game. Had he watched the game he would have noticed that this game was DOMINATED by the defenses. If Texas was "T" for Terrible, then tell me, when was the last time any team held the Sooners to MINUS 16 yards rushing. The answer...NEVER!! But Texas did it! Greg, your writing is "L" for Lousy!

You have to be kidding me. The writer of this article is RIGHT ON! Texas is so over ranked it is not even funny. They have had the easiest schedule and should have beat Texas Tech by much more being the #2 ranked team. Tech is not even ranked and they almost beat them. How sad is it that they will continue to be ranked #2 or #3 just because they started up higher and have not lost. They are not impressive at all. I would love to see Texas Tech play them now during this time of the season. I think they would blow Texas out of the water at this point. Thanks for a good article.
