Unless the NCAA takes the win away, Bobby Bowden just did college football a big favor. His Florida State team beat Brigham Young, knocking out a pretender to the throne. Then Oregon beat fellow pretender Utah. Now if somebody could dump Boise State, we'll all have a merry Christmas.
That's not likely because the Broncos have already gone unbeaten in their one-game season. It's all over but the routing of San Jose State, Idaho, UC Davis, UC Chula Vista and UC Schwarzenegger.
Then comes a holiday season of griping about how the Little Guy got shafted, followed by a Utah congressman calling for the Justice Department to jail all BCS executives.
I'd have a lot more respect for Boise State if it played a real schedule. More importantly, the BCS would have a lot more respect if the Broncos had to get up for more than one game a year.
That's what's required of BCS conference teams. Which brings us back to Bowden and BYU.
The Cougars tried to act like a BCS team this season. They scheduled two dangerous opponents and beat Oklahoma 14-13 in their opener.
But with visions of Pasadena dancing in Sen. Orrin Hatch's head, in came FSU. Out went the Cougars, 54-28.
"There's a ton of stuff we can learn from this," BYU quarterback Max Hall said.Yeah, like stop complaining about how six conferences get automatic bids to BCS bowls and five don't. The separation is easy to justify.
Haves -- Must play more than one great game a season.
Have Nots -- Must play one great game then be able to find Utah State.
Sure, Boise State beat Oklahoma in a thrilling Fiesta Bowl and Utah thumped Alabama in last year's Sugar Bowl. Nobody's saying the best from the Mountain West and WAC can't beat the best from the SEC and Big 12.
(Though let's face it, those bowl games were everything to Boise State and Utah. They were consolation trips to Oklahoma and Alabama).
Any good team can play great once. BCS conference survivors have to play great three or four times if they want to make it the championship game.

Check out this week's Top 25. If Florida makes it to Pasadena , it will have to go through LSU, Georgia, FSU and the SEC title game.
Texas still has to play Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and the Big 12 championship opponent.
Poor LSU still has three top-five teams (Florida , Ole Miss and Alabama), as well as the SEC title opponent.
Cal's only Top-25 opponents are USC and Washington, though it plays Oregon this week. Yes, the same Oregon team Boise State beat in the season opener to essentially clinch an unbeaten season.
We all remember LeGarrette Blount being dragged off the blue turf kicking and screaming and punching away. Now it's nothing but tomato cans for the Broncos.
I like their blue turf as much as the next guy. And it would be great if Chris Petersen hoisted the trophy instead of Urban Meyer or Nick Saban.
I just want the Broncos to earn the title. All they'll earn with their schedule is snickering. The highest ranked opponent is Nevada, and you have to go all the way to College Football News' ranking and run your finger down to No. 74 to find the Wolf Pack.
All this makes for one easy bowl prediction. Boise State will be unbeaten and the BCS championship game will have at least one team with a loss. The Broncos will be media darlings and the people's champion.
We'll hear the same caterwauling as last year, when unbeaten Utah had to watch once-beaten Florida and Oklahoma play for the title.
That prompted a couple of Congressional hearings, which allowed politicians like Hatch to score big points with voters back home.
"There is an arrogance to the BCS that drives me nuts," he said.
If Hatch really wants to be driven nuts he should become LSU's offensive coordinator for the next two months.
"Championships should be decided by competition," Utah president Michael Young said. "Not by conspiracy."
To which all fans of fairness should say, "Hear, Hear!"
Let the pretenders compete on a regular basis with the contenders. We just saw what happened to BYU.
We don't know for sure that fate would befall Boise State. We do know Broncos fans are going to claim they deserve to be in the BCS championship game. They should answer a simple question.
Would you trade schedules with Alabama or Cal or Texas?
They would sure trade schedules with you.

Some people never want or recognize change in college football. These same people never want to grow up and leave home. David Whitley must be one of these. What a pinhead.

I went to college with David Whitley and I can assure you, his head is not shaped like a pin. As I recall, it was a pretty good looking head at the time.

I might give Boise State the benefit of the doubt only if they get rid of that STUPID BLUE FIELD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That blue field is GREAT. Much easier to watch (on the eyes) than tired green/brown. So, don't watch Boise when they play at home. You can change the channel. Go watch Barney.

Boise State would love to play more of the caliber of teams you mentioned, but most of them don't want to take a chance in the early part of the season of being beaten by a non-BCS team like BSU. You get some of these teams to say yes to a game with BSU and I assure you BSU will accept it.

Boise can schedule top teams if they like, but they don't. If they did we would not be having this discussion.

C'mon, David, it takes two to make a schedule. Ron G. Crowley is dead on target. The big conferences guys have little to gain by playing teams like Boise State; they'd rather keep on scheduling teams like Central Michigan and Middle Tennessee (ooops........)

We all know the so-called football powerhouses are loathe to schedule home and homes against any of the non-factories! Perhaps Boise State and Utah or Brigham Young should petition the Pac 10 for admission. Then the conference would have 12 teams and be entitled to a championship game. We'd soon find out who are the pretenders and would not need jackasses writing these kinds of columns!

Where is Boise State at anyway? I think it is in Idaho. The official name of the team should be the University of California at Boise. (oops)
How many players on the team are from Idaho.
Very few huh!

The one problem with this is that we all know that teams from, say the SEC or the Pac 10, will never visit a team from, say the WAC or the Sun Belt or the Mountain West, which is harder for a team like Boise State or Utah to make even a decent schedule. So don't point the blame on them, point the blame where it solely belongs, to the major conferences.

Are you serious? Oregon just finished up a home and home with Boise, and started one with Utah this year. In '03, '04, USC played a home and home with BYU (won both games by a combined score of 77-28). UCLA has as well. Everyone knows the SEC is particularly fond of cupcakes, but that's not all the BCS conferences. And if the non-BCS schools really believe they are the best, it shouldn't matter where they have to play. Didn't seem to matter to VY and UT when they won the championship in the Rose Bowl, '05.

Reading over this article I came to 2 conclusions.....
One, you dont know much about college football and I'll tell you why. As pointed out by other ppl here its not always up the the school who they can play. Why do you think USC will play Idaho but not Boise State? Or any other example will work.
Second, its not BSU's or any other "mid-majors" fault bigger schools wont play them, it's just not worth it to those schools to lose to us.
The reason why BSU and/or Utah should have gotten to play in the NC is because look at what Utah did to Alabama! Boise dominated the whole 50 mins in the Fiesta bowl! Point is when challenged they proved they weren't just better, they were much better.
So when people want to know who the best is, like most true fans(unlike yourself who favors some mediocre BCS conference team) they find it upsetting that Utah never had the chance that they could have played with the National Champ at the very least to a close game if not a win. Same for Boise State. But, people like you either don't understand these things or are not a true fan of football seeking to know who the best really is.

This article is pure B.S. and the author is and idiot. Not many BS yes BS not BCS confrence teams will play a non-BCS team that is good because they have nothing to gain, and if they do play them the non-BCS team has to play away. Florida For example has the weakest non-confrence schedule in the BCS look at USC and OU at least they arent scared and are willing to play real non-confrence games. So this crap the that Boise State doesnt deserve to play in a BS champ game is stupid. along with automatic bids.

You're right. USC and Ohio St do have to schedule out of conference opponents because their in conference games are mediocre. Put 12 teams in every conference, have a championship Game, no independants allowed, and have a playoff. Then lets talk.

That Utah stuff is old hat PB,the Utes defense and special teams scored a lucky 21 points the 1st quarter against an overrated (as always) Alabama. The Utes had 13,yes 13 yards rushing on 24 carries in that game, that kind of crap wouldn't get them by any other top 25 team, keep crying like the Rainbows did a few years back, you have got to play somebody to be somebody. Boise has no case to stand on,GO CANES!
