Michigan linebacker Jonas Mouton punched Notre Dame center Eric Olsen in the second quarter of Michigan's victory on Saturday, and although the officials missed it, it's clear to see: Plain as day in the video above, Mouton delivers a right uppercut to Olsen's chin after the play is over.
Oddly, Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez claims he sees no punch.
Rodriguez addressed the issue with reporters Wednesday:
"What are you talking about?" Rodriguez said. "I know they were talking about one incident on film, and I didn't see anybody throw a punch or anything like that. The little bit I saw on the clip, I saw guys got tangled up together, and Jonas tried to free himself. There's a whole lot of officials out there, and I'm sure if there was an infraction, then they'd call it."Look, if Rodriguez doesn't want to suspend Mouton, fine. If he wants to say, "it's an internal matter and we'll deal with it internally," fine. But to claim that Mouton just "tried to free himself" is ridiculous. Mouton wasn't "tangled" and could have easily walked away. Instead he grabbed Olsen's shoulder pads with his left hand before punching him with his right. It was a sucker punch, plain and simple.
As John Walters pointed out this week, the officials missed the punch, and Olsen wasn't hurt, and it ended up just being one of those things that goes on in a football game that most of us miss while we're watching it live. But Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis mentioned in his press conference Sunday that the officials had missed "punches to the face after plays were over," and he's absolutely right: That was a punch to the face after the play was over. Period.
I'm not asking Rodriguez to suspend Mouton for the season as Oregon did to LeGarrette Blount. But to claim that Mouton didn't throw a punch is absurd. He did. It's right there on tape.
UPDATE: The Big Ten suspended Mouton one game.

What an absolute low life Rich Rodriguez is. Every time he gets a chance to do or say the right thing, he takes the low road. I never liked Michigan, but I always respected them, do the right thing and cut this time bomb loose, he's taking down a great program , university and alumni. Damn liar, and I am not a ND fan by any stretch, I'm a Big ten fan.

I'm still having a tough time seeing that he grabs his left pad and sucker punches him. Usually if you're punching someone you're going to have to extend your arm. Let's say he doesn't to avoid getting caught, then why is he turning his shoulders away from Olsen? That would take away from his power, especially since he's not following through to avoid getting caught. After Weis brought it up, everyone looks at it and see is, let's reframe this and see if there is another scenario:
1) ever gotten ready to jog away from something? you have a tendency to lift your hands (I usually do so with a clenched fist, especially if I'm tired) and turn your shoulders to turn your body
2) Mouton lifts his hands as Olsen gets pushed from the side by another Michigan player, this sways Olsens chin into the line of contact with Mouton's fist as he brings htem up to jog away from the tangle
3) note that Olsen doesn't react AT ALL. Either this is the weakest excuse for a punch on Mouton's (an NCAA Div I linebacker) part or Olsen didn't see this as an attack. He doesn't go after Mouton or protest to the ref.

Imagine a blown call by the BIG 10 Refs in a Michigan Home Game against Independant Notre Dame.
There were so many jaded calls they must have forgotten one of the kiy jobs of a ref in a Football Game is to protect the players from Cheap Shots and attempts at injurying a player on purpose. The Michigan Defensive Backs were throwing punches all day long , right in front of the refs and nothing was called. One of the scum bag thugs Defensive Backs actually picked up All American Candidate and Irish W/O Micheal Floyd and then threw him back down after the play was done because Flyod was humliating on on the field of play.
The Coah should be pointing this out during the game though. Instant replay should come into the act if this stuff happens and the player should be ejected.
This low life Moulden should be suspended. Coach Rod don't be a Dickrod and run a dirty Michigan program. You are not USC, you don't need to win at all cost.Play hard tough, rough Football but don't let Michigan become the King of the Cheap Shot Artist. Like it played and got away with last Saturday. I still can't beleive the horrible holding call agaisnt Sam Young after TE Kyle Rudolph ran 76 yards in a pass/catch because Sam cleanly Pan Caked his opponant.
The BIG TEN owes Notre Dame an apology and none of those Officials should ever be allowed to work a Notre Dame Game again.
The Officals probably had a few bets made on the game like the NBA refs do.
The only question is how much money they made.

Michigan, during the season, went after LSU coach Miles as he and the LSU team were fighting for a National Championship. Miles had no other choice but to tell Michigan Alum to "Get out of town!!" They then went after Rodriguez during the season at W. Va who were also looking at the opportunity to make the National Championship and BCS but the word got out just before the Pit game which W. Va lost. Rodriguez didn't deny it. He is a unethical "scum bag" for what he did to W. Va who kicked Oklahoma all over the field and should have been in the Championship game if it had not lost the Pit game and for self centered Rodriguez. They looked a lot better than Ohio State!
Worse yet, it is "unethical" to go after coaches during the season especially when they are fighting for a BCS or National Championship. That's an unwritten rule in College Football. But then Michigan didn't let that stop them, after all, "What's good For Michigan is good for football and the Big Ten." Michigan is an "unethical Scum Bag" too.
The Big Ten is a "Door Mat" league anymore and neither Michigan nor Ohio State care as long as the Sports writers keep rating them and selecting them. The Big Ten's record against teams outside the Big Ten is embarrassing. I graduated from Purdue but I watch SEC, Pac Ten and Big 12 games if I want to see good football.

I am not a Michigan fan whatsoever, and I have no clue where this "punch" is! I watched the video 3 times and saw nothing. If, and I mean if, there was a punch, this story blows the incident WAY out of proportion.

Bravo Craigo. Sounds like vcarterr, Richard, and Rich Rodriguez all have the same optomotrist. As for the Big Ten bashing by the Purdue Grad/Humphrii who watches other conference games, can't say I blame you. You did say you were a Purdue Grad , right? I'm surprised you still like football at all given what Purdue has done in the last twenty or so years. How many times can you watch that? I do get it Humphrii.

He clearly punches him as u can tell he was upset because even after he was down the center came to him and blocked him more after the play was pretty much over. That gives him reason to be upset but not to punch anyone. Even the other Michigan guy pushed the center as he was getting up. He did put his body into the punch and turned to try and make it look like he did nothing

its most amazing how some people can watch this video and "not see a punch." it was clearly an uppercut to the chin. maybe the maize and blue colored glasses they wear are obscuring their vision. sports at all levels these days are filled with criminals that should be behind bars, but they are instead glorified as being heroes. whom do the youngsters look up to as role models? just look at Pryor idolizing the felon Michael Vick. No wonder this country is spiraling down into a bottomless pit of depravity

its time to examine the coach, Rich now has two very stupid and classless acts as a leader, he needs to man up and stop the UM team from becoming a gang of thugs, self disiplining his team will keep them on the field and not in trouble. He'll be out in less than 2 years and good riddance. Bye Coach Thugger

That wasn't the only call missed by the refs. At least three pass interference calls on Golden Tate. Nothing really changes when ND goes to Michigan.

That was the pansiest punch I have ever seen. It was a cheap shot so it deserves a suspension. Rich Rod should punch the Michigan player for throwing such a feeble punch. It was clearly an act of poor sportsmanship, but even more so it was the wimpiest punch ever. The Michigan player should quit football before he hurts himself.

Waaaahhh. Waaaah. It's a tough game. That kid got hit harder than that on the next play. Mouton was clearly reacting to being hit from behind after the play was over. The ND player hit Mouton from behind and crunched his neck forward. What would you have done, tough guy ? Get off RichRod's behind.
