Rich Rodriguez Denies Jonas Mouton Punched Irish Player

Michigan linebacker Jonas Mouton punched Notre Dame center Eric Olsen in the second quarter of Michigan's victory on Saturday, and although the officials missed it, it's clear to see: Plain as day in the video above, Mouton delivers a right uppercut to Olsen's chin after the play is over.

Oddly, Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez claims he sees no punch.

Rodriguez addressed the issue with reporters Wednesday:
"What are you talking about?" Rodriguez said. "I know they were talking about one incident on film, and I didn't see anybody throw a punch or anything like that. The little bit I saw on the clip, I saw guys got tangled up together, and Jonas tried to free himself. There's a whole lot of officials out there, and I'm sure if there was an infraction, then they'd call it."
Look, if Rodriguez doesn't want to suspend Mouton, fine. If he wants to say, "it's an internal matter and we'll deal with it internally," fine. But to claim that Mouton just "tried to free himself" is ridiculous. Mouton wasn't "tangled" and could have easily walked away. Instead he grabbed Olsen's shoulder pads with his left hand before punching him with his right. It was a sucker punch, plain and simple.

As John Walters pointed out this week, the officials missed the punch, and Olsen wasn't hurt, and it ended up just being one of those things that goes on in a football game that most of us miss while we're watching it live. But Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis mentioned in his press conference Sunday that the officials had missed "punches to the face after plays were over," and he's absolutely right: That was a punch to the face after the play was over. Period.

I'm not asking Rodriguez to suspend Mouton for the season as Oregon did to LeGarrette Blount. But to claim that Mouton didn't throw a punch is absurd. He did. It's right there on tape.

UPDATE: The Big Ten suspended Mouton one game.
