ATLANTA -- This felt like something big, and it was. In fact, this was larger than even Alabama's solar system of a nose guard Terrence Cody. This was the Crimson Tide proving for a second consecutive year that the Atlantic Coast Conference is wonderful at picks and rolls, but not so much at blocking and tackling -- at least not when matched against the Southeastern Conference elite. This also was Alabama showing that it has the stuff to smash-mouth its way to prominence all season after wearing down an impressive Virginia Tech bunch near the end on Saturday night at the Georgia Dome.
It's just that Virginia Tech isn't Alabama, because Alabama was playing for Bear Bryant, the SEC and a national championship.
"You've got to understand that team on the other side is about as good as it gets," said Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer after a 34-24 loss that was more dominating for Alabama than the final score. For one, the Crimson Tide outgained Virginia Tech in total yardage, 498 to 155. For another, Alabama botched its blowout chances with several missed opportunities in the red zone and inopportune penalties.
So Alabama coach Nick Saban had it about right by saying, "One of the things I liked about us in this game is that we had to keep responding. This team kept responding better to adversity than maybe we ever have."
Now consider something else that bodes well for Alabama the rest of the way: It just prospered inside the loud, stuffed and colorful Georgia Dome, which was spending a second consecutive year hosting the equivalent to a Bowl Championship Series game during the first weekend of the college football season. Said Beamer, reflecting on the 74,954 screamers who made this the fourth-largest crowd in the dome's history, "The atmosphere was fantastic. With the crowd noise making it hard to hear, you can't beat it."

That's true. And those in charge of what officially is called the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game were omniscient enough for a second consecutive year to pit Alabama against somebody huge. Well, somebody allegedly huge.
Despite entering last season unranked, Alabama proved that traditional ACC power Clemson was a fraud during the first Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game ever with a 34-10 blasting of what supposedly was the nation's No. 9 team. So, with a No. 5 preseason ranking this time, Alabama sought to do the same on Saturday night against what supposedly was a No. 7-ranked Virginia Tech team.
Virginia Tech is legitimate, though. As a result, everything that is intriguing about a championship-caliber game was on display for the longest time before a nationally televised audience.
Thrilling plays on offense: Early in the evening, with Alabama looking for a spark, Darius Hanks dove with outstretched hands on a dead sprint to keep a scoring drive alive for the Crimson Tide with a 35-yard catch.
Jarring plays on defense: After Alabama's Roy Upchurch raced 26 yards toward the end zone with a potentially game-changing dash in the third quarter, Virginia Tech defenders stripped and then recovered the ball in the red zone.
Opportunistic plays on special teams: Virginia Tech's Dyrell Roberts zipped down the sidelines for a 98-yard kickoff return.
Unique plays from their head coaches: Saban kept teasing the Virginia Tech defense with wildcat plays, starting with the first play of the night when he placed running back Mark Ingram behind center.
Costly plays: There was that anti-Beamer Ball moment in the first quarter when Virginia
Tech punt returner Ryan Williams muffed away a punt deep in his own territory despite signaling for a fair catch.
There were more examples of each of the above -- much more, but here's all you need to know about the evening's competitive flair: There were five lead changes in the first half that led to Virginia Tech taking the skinniest of 17-16 from near the end of the second quarter into early in the fourth quarter. Then, just like that, Alabama exploded, along with its already ear-shattering followers chanting, "SEC, SEC, SEC." Over the game's final 12 minutes, the Crimson Tide outscored their tiring foes 18-7 with much of what will make Alabama lethal throughout its SEC schedule and beyond.
There was lots of speed, and there was lots of hitting, and there was lots of coaching, which all will lead to lots of winning.

That was a fun game to watch. I wish more big time teams would face each other in the opening week. Va tech is a tough team that should win a lot of games this season. If the Tide can get that offense clicking and keep the mental errors to a minimum they should have a very successful season as well. The Tide's defense is already looking scary good. College football is finally here!

i really like the work ethics, discipline, and mastery of the fundamentals saban has instilled in the alabama program. and, i think saban will soon find himself sharing bear bryant's pedestal as soon as he wins a couple of natl championships which i believe he will.
special teams, specifically, defensive return teams need work though. i'm no football coach but it seems to me that you can cut the field in half and force the direction of any return by kicking to the corners exclusively. and, our team knows which corner before hand further providing an advantage.
any thoughts?

It was a great early season football game that the better team won. Both have room for improvement and will fair well in their respective conferences. I do believe the Hokies handled the frustration better than Bama, as was evident in the penalty for personal foul and unsportsmanlike condact called on Bama. I would have thought pushing the official would have been grounds for disqualification and a possible suspension. I just wish all teams would play the game and leave out the celebrating and showing up of players on the other team. Again, a great game between to very good upper eschelon teams.
Best of luck to both, would be neat to see them meet in January for the national (albeit fictitional) national title.

ACC team was faster and more physical.
How did the Super Fast prized SEC defense give up 24 points to ACC team... an ACC team are you joking?
ALA defense wore down and played marginally.
BTW.. Okla St was faster and more physical than GA as well.
LSU won by one touchdown over a PAC 10 team that has lost 15 consecutive games... and oh by the way LSU defense was embarassed and slow in that game as well. LSU couldn't catch up to the RB, and the receivers ran by their DBs. #11 for LSU was the only player on the field.
BUT the horse stuff will begin once these over hyped teams start playing each other... "we lose to each other because we are so much better than everyone else".... WHAT A JOKE!!!

You sound like an angry big 10 or pac 10 fan. Don't be angry because the media keeps hyping up the SEC. Be angry at the last 3 teams that got their asses handed to them in the MNC game by one of those slow over rated SEC teams you're talking about.

Well CJ, if you watched the game maybe you would know why Alabama gave up 24 points. Penalties and special teams. It happens. You learn from your mistakes and you improve your team and move on. It is better to do it the first game of the season then wait until later to make these mistakes that can cost you a championship.
Who cares if LSU only won by a touchdown. What was the final score. Now you are comparing apples and oranges. Sounds like someone is bitter about the SEC to me. Its football, grow up.

Just talking facts if you don't like facts... what can I tell you?
But yes I do get tired of listening to Carson Palmer talk about how great and fast these SEC teams are when their players are getting blown by on national TV. NC state game, the NC State receivers got deep and made SC look like they were standing still... didn't mention that above because SC is not a premier team in the SEC and all conferences have those teams BUT.... even in that game the announcers were talking about how big and fast the SEC was.... chrimmeny SC only scored off a fumble on the 15 yard line and were beat up the rest of the game by a transitioning NC ST team.... the announcers have gone too far and talk stupid stuff and I am pointing out how unfactual they are. The idiot fans even talk this stupid stuff without understanding what they are talking about... frankly the games when viewed by someone like me who just watches a million football games regardless of conference are not close to what the SEC marketing thinks.

and they all won, what's your point? you obviously weren't watching the same bama-tech game everyone else was, tech became visably tired at the end of the game and bama was able to keep the ball rolling. maybe you should only comment on things you know about instead of reading something online and just posting little known, pointless facts that have no significance. again, the sec beat the teams and you are saying they are no good? football all of a sudden just became a game of luck, right?

BAMA gave up 24 points to an anemic VT offensive team..... have no idea what game you were watching.. that is the game I was watching. VT QB still has no idea what he is doing once the ball is snapped and they still scored 24 points.
One TD was a kickoff return... but again all the SEC speed should have been able to catch a slow ACC player.... don't know what you guys are watching.
And SC did win because NC State receivers dropped passes in their hands for TD late in the game... again... after they blew by all that SEC speed in the secondary of SC... again, don't know what game you were watching.
I speak the truth.. like it or not.
