There's no other way to put this: Oregon tailback LeGarrette Blount straight lost his mind Thursday night, sucker punching a Boise State player and requiring physical restraint to leave the stadium after the Ducks' embarrassing 19-8 loss. Boise State's Byron Hout appeared to tap Blount on the shoulder during postgame interactions, before turning away, only to take a Blount sucker punch to his jaw that floored him. Broncos coach Chris Petersen rushed in to separate him from further incident.Blount then hopped away, only to get into another altercation with several Boise State fans seated near the field. At that point several people had to restrain him and forcibly drag him down the tunnel into an unknown but probably dark future. It's not unreasonable to speculate that his college career is over. Blount was particularly atrocious in Thursday's game, netting negative five yards on eight carries including being on the wrong end of a safety.
(Video after the jump.)
Hout is not immune from criticism in his role in the affair, but Blount crossed a line in punching a player who had turned away from him. His inexplicable escalation after arguing with some Boise State fans while leaving the stadium only further condemns him to a severe fate.Boise State coach Chris Petersen, who was witness to the sucker punch, was more diplomatic, telling ESPN's Heather Cox that emotions had gotten the better of some players while turning attention to his team.
It's too bad, because, despite his bad game, Blount is a marvelous talent who would have done great things for Oregon this year. At this point he's just as likely to face a lengthy suspension or outright booting from the Oregon football program as he is to play again this year.
Of no small irony -- the American Football Coaches' Association had recommended full-team pregame handshakes to build sportsmanship in the game during opening weekend.

What do you expect from a program that recruits rejects from other programs? Suspended from your school? Oregon will take you.

This is the same guy that was talking s--t earlier, saying "They(Boise St.) deserve a good azz whuppin". Hout probably said , it looks like you got YOUR azz whupped. Talk all that crap, but your loser-ass cant take it like you dish it out.Under-achieving mind in an over-achieving body. Oregon U., your QB has class, but this blount guy is an ass, kick him out of NCAA athletics.

Brian Grummel...What game were you watching??? Hout "appeared to tap Blount on the shoulder?" Are you kidding me. Tap? Where did you learn your observation skills? He shoved him and talked smack and was looking right at Blount when the punch was thrown. Had Hout "extended" his hand to shake it...The punch would not have happened. Hout should be suspended for instigating the whole situation. One thing is for sure...That stupid idiot Hout will not talk smack again without his helmet on! Enough!

I agree....It's obvious that Hout instigated the whole thing when he tapped blount on the shoulder, and talked smack...Right after Hout tapped Blount on the shoulder, Blount immediatly turned around to Hout still talkin' trash...If it wasn't for the Boise coach pushing Hout in the shoulder pads, Hout would have never turned his head, and it wouldn't be called a sucker punch....Stupid Boise St. Fatboy deserved too get dropped like a bizzle on national T.V. - HAHA!!!

Hout to Blame? Are you effing kidding me? I would be talking smack to some chump like Blount who made a comment before the game too. Blount and his team got crushed and the cry baby couldn't handle a little taunting. Nothing excuses you from punching another player, especially a cheap shot like that. Blount should never be allowed to step on a football field again.

YOu're blaming the guy who shoved him a bit on the shoulder and then turned away??? What an ass.
Blout is the wrong one here. No one is saying he wasnt instigated. But the other guy was turning the other way, he was sucker punched.
Then Blout went ANIMALISTIC on the team, the crowd and the police.
And you are going to excuse this?
Can I assume that it's okay for someone to shoot up a school full of kids because they were teased, according to you?

We watched the fight over and over on TIVO, and it's true, it looked like Hout did say something, who wouldn't after the "a$$ whipping" that Blount said BSU deserved got handed back back to him on a silver platter. Hout did "tap" Blount on the arm, but he was facing the other direction when he was blindsided by the street thug. What a loser!
Blount even got into a fight with his own teammates and then took a swing at a fan in the stands as he was being escorted from the field by force. He also pushed a security guard and straight armed a Boise Police officer in the face just as they were about to enter the tunnel. The officer was only trying to protect him from the check his mouth had written that bounced when it hit the blue terf. My guess, he's cooling off in a jail cell tonight for assault on Hout, the fan, and the security guard as well as battery on a police officer.
Wow, Oregon, you guys have some class! You will notice in the video that BSU's coach Peterson stepped in immediately to control the situation, but the Duck's coach was too busy tucking his head under his wing to help escort his psycho-player to the locker room. Coach Pete wouldn't allow his player to play at all, if they made a comment like the one Blount made about BSU. Says a lot about the integrity of the Oregon program. Time to think about gettting your ducks in a row.
The NCAA should kick Blount out for the rest of the season, but wait til his team bales him out of jail first. Thanks for keeping the Bronco's home winning streak the longest in the Nation!

He didnt shove him like a 280+lb. lineman could have , he was starting to look at his coach when he was sucker-punched, and Hout was just talking smack to the guy who had been spewing smack for DAYS. Hout was looking to the left,slack-jawed, when the devious,little-minded blount sucker-punched him outside of Houts peripheral vision.
Hout didnt cross the line by talking smack to someone who well deserved it, Blount DID cross the line by resorting to violence AFTER THE GAME WAS OVER because he got his poor wittle feelings hurt. Let me get this straight, its just fine and dandy for Blount to talk smack for days but not to have smack directed at him ????? and if someone does talk smack to him it is just fine and dandy for Blount to haul off and sucker punch the smack talker ????? No........it is not right or justifiable under ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. Blounts ass should be sitting in the downtown Boise police station and his locker should be empty by friday evening. Let him try to fill a roster spot in arena ball . Kick his ass out !

Blount gave him a pretty good shot. With some training Blount might consider a boxing career, since his football career doesn't seem to be going so well.

Bull Sh@t! Hout wasn't looking at all, Blount made a chump move that hopefully gets him kicked off the team. How can you be at that level of football and handle yourself like a little kid. Its big time D1 football DK4X, guys talk shit. If you ever played the sport you would know. If I remember correctly, Blount was running his mouth to the press before the game too. He probably punched his way out of the NFL. Who cares anyways, USC is at home licking their chops watching this game, after they are done laughing of course.

While Blount unquestionably deserves whatever punishment that gets handed down, Chris Peterson, if he has any class at all, will take some sort of disciplinary action against that Bobby Boucher looking Byron Hout as well. No matter how the Boise State faithful want to spin it, Hout is far from blameless in this situation. He classlessly taunted a beaten opponent. Give the kid this though, he can take a punch. He got dropped like a bad habit and after his eyes stopped rolling around in his head, he popped right up.
The headline should have read: BYRON KNOCKED HOUT

Enough,I am so tired of this black and white thing.
its getting old. This Oregon kid, man, boy, psycho, or what ever you want to call him should never be allowed to play on the play equipment again, unless he is in a padded cell.
It just makes no sense, especially when you hear of reports from his own coaching staff that he has acted up before in this same manner during practice with his own team mates just weeks before this game. Who needs that? certainly not a disorganized, undisciplined pac 10 football team. The Ducks do not look all that good. And to make matters worse, this negative -5 yard performer wants to take his anger out on someone who probably did nothing more than tell him the awful truth to his face, your team really sucks.
Now what's wrong with that? The truth really in this case does not set you free. I think it will more than likely at least set him free of playing football at the U of O. where they really seem to have this things about ZERO'S.
