NCAA Investigating Oklahoma State Freshman Safety's Academic Transcripts

Oklahoma State true freshman safety Joe Mitchell is having his academic records investigated by the NCAA, after allegations of academic fraud came to light at his former high school, Katy (Texas) Morton Ranch, over the weekend, an OSU spokesman confirmed to FanHouse on Monday.

The school received a tip over the weekend that three football coaches at Katy Morton Ranch were being investigated, including head coach Scott Svendsen, for changing transcripts for the purpose of making players eligible to play football. OSU then informed the NCAA of the tip, only to find out the allegations were already being looked into by the governing body.

Svendsen and two of his coaches are on administrative leave after the Katy School District learned of the allegations that include them possibly altering Mitchell's transcripts.

Mitchell, who is 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, is permitted to practice with the Cowboys while the investigation goes through the NCAA Clearinghouse. OSU spokesman Gavin Lang, however, said the investigation must come to a resolution by Friday or Mitchell will have to sit until it's complete.

Lang also said the school is unaware exactly what role Mitchell or his academic transcripts may have played in the NCAA's investigation.

Mitchell played quarterback and defensive back for Morton Ranch last season. Calls to Svendsen were not returned Monday.
