Greg McMackin, the head coach at Hawaii, should probably call in sick to next year's WAC media day teleconference. For the second year in a row, he has said something regrettable during that event. This year McMackin (pictured right) told a story about a banquet the night before last year's Hawaii Bowl, which pitted his team against Notre Dame. Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis told the crowd about his school's "clapping tradition," which frankly is even less exciting than you think: "WE ARE!" (clap, clap) "ND!" (clap, clap).
McMackin, it must be said, was not exactly impressed by this.
At today's media preview, McMackin referred to what the Domers did as "this little f****t dance." (Hear it for yourself here; obviously, this is not safe for work.) McMackin then went on to use the same term twice more in pleading with the media not to print what he had just said.
There is precedent for this. Last year McMackin, who was in his first season as head coach, inadvertently mentioned the name of a recruit during his question-and-answer session. He asked those in attendance not to print that he'd mentioned the recruit's name, since it was an NCAA violation for him to do so. The press complied, which was the right thing to do for a rookie head coach who has just committed a minor blunder. This time? No such luck, Coach.
You aren't being "politically correct" if you say that what McMacklin said about Notre Dame was wrong. Taste and tact far precede political correctness. What he said was both tasteless and tactless. His point would have been made just as well if he'd called it "a little wimpy dance." He then wouldn't have had to plead with the reporters not to report what he just said. And he wouldn't have had to tell them that he would deny having said it if they reported it.
To his credit, McMackin apologized for what he said, stating that "I'm really ticked off at myself for saying that" and blaming it all on an attempt to be funny.
Thing is, now he has a bigger problem. The next time there's something unflattering involving Hawaii football, and we read the words "Head coach Greg McMackin denied [whatever]," are any of us going to believe him?

So what does that say about his team, since ND whipped their tails in the Hawaii Bowl.

It doesn't matter how much the Irish beat the Bow's, the dance is still gay.

Hey Coach McMackin, what was the score of that game again? Oh yes ND won 49-21 (and Hawaii's last 7 was scorded against the subs). That was a humiliation, not a loss. You should talk less and study football more. Then you can play against the big boys and not look like second rate high school team.

Just a suggestion McMackin, don't ever play Notre Dame again. This time they will be mad, not just having some fun on vacation in Hawaii, and they will beat you 100-7.

Who cares what he said. So he used a word that gays find offensive. Big deal, are we all so wimpy that we can't even take this any more. I guess we all have to pretend we are politically correct rather than be ourselves. I'm white middle class and every minority and special interest group can attack me and have no problem with it. It doesn't bother me when they do so why can't we have the same rights.

Bob,
You do have the same rights, because you are a no-talent, know-nothing loser, with no reason to ever speak in public, and be quoted by reporters, and whose opinion, no matter how thoughtless and rude, no one would care about. Hey come to think of it your just like this stupid coach from Hawaii. he even begged reporters to not print his ridiculous usage of words, because he knew he shouldn't be saying things like that in a public forum.

Actually, calling a team or someone f****t doesn't have the same connotation as it used to. It pretty much means the same as a lot of slang words used to describe a "softie" or "sissy". Please people! Can't we all get along?????

Why do so many of you think we as a society should accept such a malicious, bigoted word that is explicitly used to defame the gay and lesbian community? If the N-word was used, I don't think everyone would be defending the coach....

They don't belong to a conference. That way they get to pick which high school teams tey play. St. Mary's Home for Unwed Mothers is on the schedule this year. Typically, they play USC, Michigan, and Michigan State every year. And lose. The trick for ND is to line up 6 patsies to make the bowls, then remind the patsies to not beat them.
