Remember Catholics vs. Convicts? The 31-30 last-second classic in South Bend in 1988? Two decades have passed but the intense, bitter, intersectional battle between the Notre Dame and Miami football programs could be returning in the near future. The Miami Herald reports that the schools are in talks to renew their series in the future.Things got hot after 1985 when the 'Canes were accused of running up the score to the tune of 58-7. Notre Dame took its ball and ran home after 1990 but the decline of both programs and a good two decades of precious time seem to be just the ingredients necessary to revive talks about playing more games. This is great for college football if the programs can work this out.
Heading the negotiations are Notre Dame's new athletic director Jack Swarbrick and Miami's Kirby Holcutt. The Herald says they've spoken before and will resume talks in April. In the meantime Swarbrick mentions the possibility of a home-and-home series plus one NBC-televised neutral site game.
College football is starved for more great intersectional games, and however mediocre both programs are right now hopefully they can get on the right course in time to make this potential battle a great one.

Not smart for Notre Dame. Miami owned them in the 80s. The rivalry only existed in the first place back before Miami was even a powerhouse school. Just like Notre Dame schedules easy opponents now, they did back then too. This would be a tough ACC team, and we know Notre Dame can't beat ACC teams. (Just look at the last few seasons, they got rocked by them all, including teams that Miami were able to beat during their decline). If Notre Dame had never cut the series, Miami would have won a hell of a lot of games against them in the 90s and 2Ks. The only year in those two decades where Notre Dame would've had a chance was 2006.

I agree! Notre Dame is so shallow. They didn't want to play Miami anymore because the Hurricanes OWNED them....so they ended the series and started playing Florida St. I guess they feel they can "COMPETE" NOW...! The fighting Irish are PHONIES!

Notre Dame scheduled easy opponents then too huh? As in the 1988 championship year beating #1 Miami, #2 USC, and #3 West Virginia?

Just for you info, Miami is no longer the convict school. They actually have one of the better graduation percentages in all of college and are a private university. And the reason they played Notre Dame in the 80's is because both schools were independents and not associated with any conference. They split when Miami joined the Big East.

Funny how Notre Dame wants to PLAY again. They couldn't wait for the series to end when they played in the 80"s and 90's...so they started playing Florida St....Found out they where just as FAST....(LOL) Shame on Notre Dame. If the Canes where the same they would NEVER look to play them again.
