Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin is never far from the headlines, even when it's unintentional. So it goes with this story about his last-minute pitch to South Carolina receiver Alshon Jeffery. Deliberately holed up in a hotel on the eve of signing day by his coach, Jeffrey listened to desperate pitches from South Carolina, Tennessee and Southern California. The one-time Southern Cal commit ultimately chose South Carolina, but not before Kiffin pledged "that if he chose the Gamecocks, he would end up pumping gas for the rest of his life like all the other players from that state who had gone to South Carolina." And to that, Jeffery seems to have taken serious offense.
Translation -- our relationship's through, coach. Chris Low's ESPN.com article detailing that evening finds Jeffrey's coach much more open and diplomatic about the offending words.
"It was his last resort. That's all it was," said [coach Walter] Wilson, who also attended high school in South Carolina. "When you get pushed against the wall and your back is there, you're going to come out with something."
Don't look for this to be a repeated pitch from Kiffin. He should know better given his recruiting reputation that pulling kids out of the South is tough, tough business. You don't insult them, their prospects, or their states even if they are looking elsewhere. Look at the tune Jeffery's now singing:
"It's just what I wanted to do, stay at home and help the home school," he said. "I started looking at it from all different angles and not just football."

Telling a kid with that mindset he'll just end up pumping gas is the absolute wrong path to pursue, in tone and content. In the big picture it's not a big deal, but it's another piece of the Lane Kiffin puzzle and a funny anecdote from the recruiting trail.
But with incidents like this, and how mentor Pete Carroll doesn't get nabbed for similar offenses, that leads many people to believe Kiffin isn't so much sneaky like a fox, but just plain sneaky.

When Kiffin gets tongue-tied, it's from his shoe strings, because he always seems to have at least one foot in his mouth at all times. He needs to see a doctor about that faulty connection between his brain and his mouth before HE ends up pumping gas somewhere.

I never thought I would say that Al Davis was correct but he certainly did have Lane "the punk" Tiffin figured correctly. He should be fired immediately as one of the biggest jerks ever to coach. He is an embarrassment to Tennessee and they should rid themselves of this idiot as soon as possible.

Maybe he meant to say "you will end up in either New Jersey or Oregon pumping gas" which are the only 2 states which still ban self-service pumps.

If Kiffen keeps up with the trash talk, Kiffin will be the one pumping gas. It's past time for him to show maturity and leadership but I just don't think he has it in him. Time will tell and TN fans will give him a at least two years.....unless he keeps stepping in the crap. I don't think he can get the best from his players when it comes to discipline...hell, he can't control what comes out of his own mouth.

The people that are mouthing off about Coach Kiff think their coach is a saint. All coaches say this stuff to pull a recruit. I have no idea why this is even news worthy. We love CLK here in Tennessee. Were not taking the crap off of Florida or SC anymore. Gatorzz can suck it when our defense knocks Tebow, who I respect even if he is a gator, out of the game for the first time in his career. We may lose the game but florida will NOT score 30 points less on 60.

For Christ's sake, even a first year Journalism student knows to use allegedly when writing a quote from someone else when you were not in the room...the writer and the editor of this story should have the common decency to use proper AP guidelines in this story...maybe he said it, maybe he did not...but you were not in the room nitwit.

There are plenty of *ss holes in college coaching. Saban is one of the biggest. He may be a winner on the field, but he is a jerk and a poor excuse as a human everywhere. I am sure that before he is through at Alabama, the textbook scandle there will just look like a pea in a boxcar.

Lane Kiffen should be fired is. He hasn't even coach a game in for Tenn. yet and is already making enemies. South Carolina sends players to the NFL quite frequently. Specifically at wide receiver Troy Williamson and Sidney Rice both were top 10 over all draft picks in recent years, and Kinny McKinley will be a 1st round WR pick this year. I hope the best games Jeffery's career at South Carolina come against Tennesee. It won't take but a couple of beat downs to get Kiffen kicked out the SEC.

Wow, Kiffin just gave Spurrier some material to get the Gamecocks pumped up next fall when they play Tenn. I guess Kiffin just wants to keep the Fulmer(Tenn)/Spurrier feud going.

Hey Mike, yes I do believe that my Vols will go into florida and hold them to 30 or less. Like I said though, we may not win but we will NOT be humiliated. They probably will not knock Tebow out of the game but they will hold him in check. Yeah Coach Kiff is an A$$ but so is Nick Satan, and Urban Cryer. We Vol fans were tired of Fat Phil just shying away when he was called out. We like the new 'tude that Coach Kiff brings. Besides he has denied saying those things. He admitted his guilt in getting wrong the rule about Myer and the secondary violations, which all schools commit, so I believe he did not say it, that the kid is trying to pile on or that Spurrier has put him up to it.

If Lane doesn't make it as a coach this time, maybe Rush Limbaugh will hire him.
