I think Virginia coach Al Groh gets enough done in 2009 to, at the very least, leave on his own terms. Say what you will, but the usual pattern dictates that Virginia surpass expectations a year after falling flat. Once that happens, the inevitable goes down and Craig Littlepage heads down I-20 to Richmond and meets whatever demands Mike London has.
Well, after Al Groh, who in Charlottesville wouldn't want another aged NFL retread with connections to Bill Parcells and dubious gameday strategy? So imagine when the rumor was floated that Romeo Crennel was being even mentioned as a longshot candidate for the not-open Virginia job mere months after a not-particularly ceremonious defenestration by the Browns. Talk about a no-brainer, like, literally- though Crennel does hail from Lynchburg (I guess? that's the reasoning), he's spent a grand total of one season in the ACC, and that was as a defensive line coach for Georgia Tech. In 1980. Not sure who was putting this one out there, but it's kind of crazy what can be thrown out there under the radar when Virginia fans are most heatedly discussing who their next basketball coach might be after yet another conference loss.
