"I've been made aware by the Southeastern Conference that my comments this morning at a breakfast with our donors violated a conference policy. In my enthusiasm for our recruiting class, I made some statements that were meant solely to excite those at the breakfast.
"I apologize to Commissioner Mike Slive and the SEC, including Florida AD Jeremy Foley and coach Urban Meyer. My comments were not intended to offend anyone at the University of Florida."
But, hey, at least Kiffin's getting off on the right foot, huh? As Matt Hinton noted, this situation could actually have been more embarrassing for Kiffin had he stood by his stance and demanded that the SEC and NCAA investigate a violation of a non-existent rule.Alas, he didn't. Since it’s not against NCAA rules (although highly unethical) to contact a prospect while he’s visiting another school, I hope that every Vol fan will seek out the cell phone numbers of all of Florida’s future recruits – their numbers are probably available with just a little Googling – and while they’re on their official visits to Gaines-burg, we can all call those numbers repeatedly during their entire visit. Hey, if Urban can do it, why can’t the rest of us? I’ll bet even Lane could do it and not get in trouble, since the SEC commissioner himself has endorsed the unethical procedure and clarified the rules for us. (Buford Pusser to the corrupt judge in ‘Walking Tall:’ “The only thing you have to worry about the law is how much of it I can use against you…”)
