It took all of a minute for the BCS National Championship Game's biggest hit award to be claimed by Florida safety Major Wright.
On Oklahoma's third play from scrimmage, Sam Bradford tried to hit Manny Johnson on a deep route down the left sideline. Bradford laid a nice pass in to Johnson -- but the ball got there at almost the exact instance that Wright came flying over and absolutely demolished Johnson, forcing an incompletion.
Wright later picked off Bradford just before halftime, but this play is more fun to watch.
i'm confused as why it wasn't pass interference. the ball hits Wright on his back after he has already demolished Johnson. seems to me that would mean the defender hit him before the ball got there.
Not only was it pass interference, it was leading with the helmet. He hit him under the chin with the crown of his helmet. Should've been a 15-yard penalty regardless.
I'll tell you why that was a no-call if you can tell me why the always high-quality ACC refs ignored blatant holding by the Oklahoma offense all throughout the game, and didn't call the obvious personal foul against the Sooner who tried to rip Percy Harvin's ankles off his legs after tackling him.
Oh wait, I know why ..... ACC refs are the bottom of the barrel and generally tend to spend more time playing Nintendo DS than watching the actual game they are refereeing.
All in all, enough was going on the entire game for both sides that shoulda coulda been called but wasn't, so time to get over it.
TeriG8r, you're nuts to say get over it. We're supposed to discuss what we saw, and the fact it wasn't called is a big deal. He could have seriously hurt manny, give him a concussion, or something like a broken jaw. I don't see to many injuries coming from holding penalties that's what makes it ridiculous. I hated the refs, and brennanman.
First off, this goes to TeriG8r... do you know why they allow people to post comments on pages like this??? if you do then there's no need to make a comment about how people need to get over anything. The facts are there for us, and are there for discussing. Sure the ACC refs aren't top notch.. for many examples such as reviewing a play when there's no need. But for people to see this play for what it is, dangerous, and a penalty, is very valid. You on the other hand commenting how holding calls were being let go is ridiculous. You don't get to many concussions from holding a guy, plus is easy to view this type of play rather than when big man are going at it. It's ridiculous to see a player lead with his helmet, a touch early at that and then do a lil show boating after especially when you see a kid have a tough time picking him self up. I was flabbergasted, and fox needs to have a little sit down with it's announcers. I think Tebow is an animal, doing amazings things with the opportunity he has but the was he was represented by brennanman made me feel sorry for all who are unbiased watching this game, as I was. I had my heart on bradford with his cool demeanor winning it but my money on Florida with it's variety of talents. Tebow may become everything he wants to be but when you're watching a match up of two talented teams and a player is over represented it makes me wonder if they have money and there heart on something. I hated the way they announced the game, pure bush league, and everyone of them talks like the know more than they show. In the end the only thing that made the game worthy of it's title was the general intensity until that late pick by Mr.Black. Then the D-Fence couldn't stop a option play when they needed too and showed once again that the play calling was bush league. I think Stoops, needs to watch some game tape and admit his play calling was suspect. I know kevin wilson admitted he may have made mistakes choosing run and run... on a 3 and goal on the 1 yard line... where's the QB sneak or the play action. Stupid.. Stupid... and Stupid... the difference in this game may have been urban meyer's understanding of how to make his team successful when he needs them to be. That's it, that's all except this.. hey iglesias next time you go to make a grab, try to hold it and pull it in instead of trying to stop it, let it go and grab again in mid air... you're the reason it was picked not bradford.
Dude, hardovski, you get all the upset out?? Why don't you blab on with your coulda shoulda woulda some more. As a neutral observer and a long time football player and fan, I loved the Major Wright hit. National Championship, first test of the game, and you hit a homerun right in front of your bench in your backyard. What a tone setter -- would have been worth the 15. The kid's a player.
to hardovski about how about the hit was dangerous and its not the same as holding because holding doesnt hurt people. football is a dangerous game if the reciever didnt wanna get hit he shouldn't have tried to catch the ball
Clearly you've never played any good level of ball. Sure it's a good hit, doesn't mean it's clean. So is pavel bure's elbow, and half the hits steve young recieved.
I agree with PK 94. As a high school football player my team gets exited when our defense puts a lick like this on an opposing player. Major Wright was not trying to hurt the guy. He was just playing the sport the way its meant to be played, fast and physical. If people dont like to see someone get demolished on the football field then they should go watch water polo or something.
ALL I KNOW IS....MANNY GOT HIS ASS KNOCKED THE F***K OUT!!! Lets not get picky about calls...there were enough penalties in the game as it is. Thats what we in the SEC like to call some GOOD OLD HEAD BUSTIN FOOTBALL! welcome to the SEC = ]
We don't call pass interference because it might cut into Tebowpallooza. Get OU's offense off the field so we can here how Timmy is the greatest human to ever draw breath on the earf!
...in real time, that perfect timing! and a great hit! yeah, it could of been dangerous...but anytime the WR goes out to make a catch he runs the risk of gettin lit up...sure, if your an OU fan you wanted the flag...that's normal. in every game there are questional calls and no-calls...if your an OU fan i'd be questioning the play calling not the refs calls! fact of the matter is...when you have a chance to take the lead in the NC game...you take it! just bad play calling...and it came back to bit ya in the a$$! three years in a row! it's great to be in the SEC!
Please stop using words incorrectly. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that you're better than that. When you accept some sort of compensation for writing this crap (I assume) you should at the very least use the words correctly. I'll leave the content comments to some of the others. Words have actual, definate meanings. You know what they say: " Cell phone couch cushion dog bowl." Well, you know what I meant.
The point isn't "calls got evened out," or "the SEC is so bad@$$ ... look how hard we play." The point is that this play is a threat to both players' health, particularly the defender's. **That** is why it's a penalty -- to keep these guys safe when they otherwise wouldn't restrain themselves. I'm no OU fan and was rooting for UF to win ... but I thought it was clear Wright should have been flagged for that hit. There's plenty of room for vicious hitting without risking paralysis. These guys' lives aren't video games, despite how entertaining it is for all of us (apparently the idiot announcers too).
This is as close to arriving at the same time as the ball as you can get. Anyone who has played the game for any length of time knows this is a legit tackle. Awesome hit!
A gator fan...but the hit was early, was not called, a break went the gators way that time. Breaks go both ways...a part of the game...we all want to win, is easy to blame the calls on the outcome. Not a perfect system, wish it were but over time, it helps all teams and hurts all teams. Gators a slightly better team I believe, OKs defense was impressive. OKs quarterback has a super arm and poise. Both teams are great, could have gone either way.
I honestly cannot beleive the comments this video is receiving about pass interference?? It was a perfectly timed hit no interference whatsoever, AMAZING tone setter. Kinda reminded me of laron landry a little bit. Don't think im one sided though, both teams played an amazing game. Just came down to big turnovers.

What a no call that was. Or turning a blind eye, kinda like the foxs' love affair for tebow. Leading with the helmet is a penalty.
