The Utah Utes just finished (another) undefeated season. They are, naturally, proud of this fact. Not quite as proud, though, as they are angry about a BCS scenario that will not enable them to win a national title. This is because, of course, Oklahoma and Florida are really the only eligible title contenders. (Just don't tell Mack Brown I said that.) But that fact certainly isn't stopping the Thelma, Marvin and Provos of the world from saying their peace -- just ask News and Observer reporter and AP voter J.P. Giglio, who lets us know that people in Utah can use e-mail.
Utah fans have been mass e-mailing AP voters, urging us to put the Utes, the nation's only unbeaten team, No. 1 in the final Top 25.Frankly, I can't say I blame the Utah fans; go ahead and put me down for a mea culpa on the whole "Alabama is going to slaughter that little Mountain West team". And it's that same stigma (again, I'm sorry) that has caused puh-lenty of voters to simply ignore teams from smaller conferences.
I've received no less than 100 e-mails from the Ute faithful, not to mention a Facebook wall post from a Ute alum.
The big problem is that there isn't -- and this is no real surprise -- ever a consistent level of bowl performance from the Boise States and the Hawaiis and the Utahs of the world. Which pretty much means that the only solution that will ever work correctly is a freaking playoff. Not sure how many times it has to be said.

The STD of football(college) especially in the south; If Alabama beat Auburn 36 to zero and Utah beat Alabama by 11(when all contests said 10 point loser to be), then Utah wins over Auburn by 47. If you beat so and so and we beat you then we beat all your opponents, how stupid is that? One meaningless vote for better scheduling or the lesser opponents don't help a non competitive major opponent to an undeserving championship bid. uh but Florida made that schedule in 2006. (Were they called Florida in 2006?) All their opponents need to be plastered on their trophy.

I'll agree with you on the need for a playoff. But not for this reason:
"there isn't -- and this is no real surprise -- ever a consistent level of bowl performance from the Boise States and the Hawaiis and the Utahs of the world."
I suppose the implication is that there's a consistent level of bowl performance from BCS teams?
Non-BCS schools are now 3-1 in BCS games. Hawaii was embarrassing, but we all knew that going in. Utah (both times) and BSU played good, entertaining football in their BCS appearances, and the MWC and WAC have generally done pretty well in other bowl games the in the last several years.

Actually, I thought about that after I wrote this (and then left the office); you're right, I most certainly should have specified that EVERYONE is inconsistent. Not just the smaller schools.

Utah has the longest bowl game winning streak in the nation, including 2 BCS bowl wins. So how is that not a consistent level of bowl performance?

If i were Tah I would be spreading; Should Alabama even been in the game against us? Why weren't we given a better opponent? Alabama lead for zero minutes of the Sugar bowl was sacked 8(going on fifteen)times was beaten by more than a field goal. The Sec has the best defense on the planet and they sent their best. Their coach had multiple accolades but didn't compare to our coaches approach to the game. You have no championsip but by the rules of the Sec fanatics you have FIVE weeks of #1 under your belt and elephant's a** for your mantle(big deal).

The BCS has no right to call itself a "national championship" when it excludes a huge portion of the nation. I'm not sure if this Will Brinson idiot can read a map or can do math. But if, on the off chance he CAN, he should.
Go ahead and argue strength of schedule. Oklahoma played their share of top 20 teams (as did Utah) but they also had 5 games that were less than a cake walk. Chatanooga? Western Kentucky? The winless Washington? Give me a break! Florida was even worse! They only played 3 top 20 teams! Their 1 LOSS season included power houses like The Citadel, Hawaii, and Vanderbilt.
Stop living in the past. The Utes are for real. We're here to stay, and we'll spoil your elitist BCS party for years to come. The UNDEFEATED Utah Utes deserve to be number 1. And that's the bottom line.

The Utah Attorney General is apparently convinced that football is the most important thing in the country right now and says the BCS violates anti-trust laws. Seriously now the AG of a U.S. state is involved in this? Come on Utah.

Hi Daniel, yeah makes me wonder what our president has been doing for the past four years. Real problems are not on the Utah level, come on.

Wasn't MWC 2-0 vs. SEC this year? I know Wyoming went to Knoxville and beat Tennessee.

well guys i must admit utah looked pretty strong and played a great game this is comming from an sec fan but then again i remember auburn getting left out after going undefeated a few years back.i was really impressed by utah and the way they fought back after it looked like bama was comming back sometimes id like too see a playoff but i love the bowls except the added corperate logos attached but i try not too let that ruin it i think the gators are the best team in the nation by far but utah might give them a good game but the best thing you utah fans can do is stop crying - it happens and it will happen again to somebody else next year and the year after - if the sooners beat the gators i hope you at least get the ap. poll championship id say you are deserving

The real thing the Sec is "good" at is trash talk, I think. If so how ironic, the places of higher learning as such.

Florida beat #5 Oklahoma, #6, Alabama, #13 Ga, #21 FSU and lost to #14 Ole Ms. Florida deserves the #1 ranking. Utah deserves the #2 ranking and beat: #6 Alabama, #7 TCU, #18 Oregon St (who only beat #3 USC and lost to all the others) and #25 BYU (which lost to both final AP ranked teams) and doesn't deserve to be in top 25 final poll. Even now, the poll is still politics. Utah doesn't deserve #1 but does deserve #2.
