FanHouse gathers around the TV to bring you insights from Bowl Season '08. Death, taxes and pregame smack talk -- they're all inevitable. Oklahoma cornerback Dominique Franks delivered a doozy today ahead of Thursday night's BCS championship game, challenging Gators quarterback Tim Tebow and ripping the offensive talent in the SEC for good measure.
Exhibit A:
"With us being in Florida and playing against Florida, everybody's going to think Tebow should have won the Heisman," Franks said. "But the right person won the Heisman, and we're going to go out there and show everybody the reason why he won it."Exhibit B:
"If you look at the three best quarterbacks in the country, they came from the Big 12,"Exhibit C:
"The three best receivers in the country came from the Big 12. The three best tight ends came from the Big 12. So we've faced some great offenses, and a lot of people don't understand that other conferences don't have what we face."And with that, ESPN now has more than enough filler for the next few days of idle chatter before the big game. This is nothing new for Oklahoma before a BCS Championship game -- more on that in a moment -- and frankly, Franks wasn't finished talking.
Clearly not satisfied leaving all his secondary mates out to dry, Franks barbed Tebow for not throwing enough.
"Going into a game and knowing a quarterback's going to throw the ball 40 times a game versus coming into a game and knowing he's probably only going to throw it about 15 or 20. ... It makes it a lot harder to prepare for those [Big 12] guys,"
So basically, the Big 12 is awesome, has the country's best skill players and by extension better than Florida's, Tim Tebow is easier to play against than other, superior Big 12 quarterbacks because he doesn't throw as much, and Oklahoma's defense won't have any problems Thursday night.
Got it.
Needless to say this is incredibly stupid, particularly when Oklahoma is considered an underdog and may otherwise have caught Florida napping. Given the Sooners' anemic big-game performances, now was not the time to bring back memories of 2004 when Oklahoma defensive end Larry Birdine had too much to say before the BCS championship game against USC. It's eerie how parallel the commentary is. Said Birdine:
Leinart was a ''good quarterback, but he's not a Heisman Trophy winning quarterback.''
''I want to respect them just because I have to play them, but then I watch them on tape and everything, and I realize that they're an average team.''
And ...''The Pac-10 has no speed. Our receivers are bigger than their receivers. Our D-line is faster than their D-line.''
Good one big guy. Final score: USC 55 Oklahoma 19, oops upside your head. Bob Stoops must be in a cold sweat right about now after those comments.
Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables, the same guy probably telling these players how good they are, humorously tried to put out the flames by cracking on Franks.
"I don't know, maybe it's just a young guy who doesn't know any better," Venables said. "He doesn't watch enough tape. I really mean that. But I think he's going to bat for a lot of guys who he has a lot of respect for."
Yeah this issue isn't going to be put to bed anytime soon, good times.
All that said, Florida isn't immune from its own questionable comments. Gator linebacker Brandon Spikes said something that slipped under the radar but apparently swiftly made its way to the Sooners' locker room.
Spikes said on Saturday it seemed they put most of the best athletes in the Big 12 on offense and that the defenses looked a step slow.
As a college football observer I tend to agree with him, but I can also see how that can be taken the wrong way by a good defensive athlete in the Big 12. Fortunately this will all be settled on Saturday Thursday.

Um, better make sure to watch on Thursday night, since if you try to watch on Saturday, you'll be disappointed I think.

The FIRST time that Tebow runs right over Dominique Franks, Tebow will just smile at him - as he's carted off the field - and say, "may Jesus be with you."

You people are such idiots. The media is stacking on OU. What really happened was Franks made his comments in response to comments made by Spikes. But the first trash talk came from Tebow who said he wanted a crack at the Big 12 teams earlier in the season. It's the same media that loves Obama that loves Florida, but it's gonna be setteled on the field, like Utah settled it. So get ready nay sayers, we'll see how it plays out.

Shame Shame Shame on the media for selling this as a national championship game. A champion can only be crowned when you defeat your opponent on a field, not on a computer or appointed by someone sitting in an ivory tower. Sure OK and FL are good football teams, but so is Utah, USC and Texas. Who knows how this would all turn out if teams were actually allow to play each other. I will be watching OK vs FL, not as a national championship game but as just another bowl game.

Funy how people look at this whole thing.
OU played by the same set of rules that Texas and every other team in the Bigh 12 agreed to and when the chips did not fall the way that TYewxas wanted it to.. they cried..
OU did what they had to do to be in the spot that they are now. So let it go man.. go get some help.. see if you can find a 12 step program to help you over this life hump..

Florida will beat them by four touchdowns, and give them such a beatin they will never forget what the SEC conference did to them, If they played in it they would not see a bowl game for so long the school would cancel there football program.

I seem to remember that game. Leinart throws 5 touchdown passes. The USC receivers torch the OU secondary and the team speed of the USC defense destroys the OU offense.
It's been a spotty Big 12 showing in the bowl season and actually for the SEC, too. Should be interesting

Spotty SEC showing LMAO! Seems the Big 12 got burned by the SEC Ole Miss style! 8 SEC Teams in bowls losing 2 out of 7 with the big one to go and I am sure the SEC will have a 6-2 bowl record with a National Championship to boot!
Spurriers Gamecocks should not have been invited and Alabama should have been better prepared instead of thinking the game was a win before it started.
FIRE Saban and Spurrier ban them from the SEC!

Franks makes one comment and gator country freaks out talking trash isnt going to solve anything just let them line it up thursday nite and we will see. If ou loses then let it be and vise versa with florida be a sportsmanship agney and defeat and the thrill of victory is what football is all about

Shame on ABC and ESPN for perpetuating the fraud of a National Championship Game. No true fan believes OK vs FL is for the national championship. It is just another bowl game. A national championship is won on the field not appointment by some computer or sports writers. I feel sorry for the players and coaches at Utah, USC, and Texas for not having the chance to play. SHAME on the NCAA and all who crown a fake champion.

Everyone in ALL of the major conferences agreed to this PRIOR to the season. They all signed the contract prior to. So no one has any room to complain. The SEC, PAC 10, Big Ten, Big 12, MWC, etc. If Utah is going to bitch about it then they shouldn't have agreed to the system. If you don't like it then don't sign the contract. And if the Attorney General of Utah is going to file a lawsuit against the BCS he should be removed from office IMMEDIATELY. Prior to wasting millions of taxpayer dollars. It is what it is.

Franks, really should have learned his lesson last year. The Sooners thought they were going to roll over Pat White. Has he forgotten OU has lost the last 4 bowl games? From Mountaineer Nation: Best of luck to Tim & the Gators
