FanHouse gathers around the TV to bring you insights from Bowl Season '08.
In writing about Five Things To Get You Ready For The Rose Bowl, I said "Penn State is not your average Big Ten team". Yes ... and no. Having watched USC steamroll various Big Ten opponents under Pete Carroll, this Penn State team seemed superior to most if not all of them. Yet it wasn't enough thanks to a chaotic second quarter that saw USC surge from a 7-all tie to an insurmountable 31-7 lead.
Penn State fought valiantly against a bored USC in the second half, enough so that a late USC punting mistake in the last minute very nearly made it a ballgame again. But it was clear who was superior all afternoon, USC's lead peaking at 38-14 before things got silly on the way to a 38-24 victory.
Fitting for a west coast team, USC surged on the strength of its passing game and a handful of ill-timed Penn State penalties.
Both defenses traded punts for a while in the first quarter, hinting at a defensive struggle. Then, USC found the end zone. Penn State answered with an 80-yard scoring drive of its own. And then USC answered again. And again. And again. A small army of self-inflicted penalties by Penn State proved crucial, limiting both successful offensive plays and defensive stops. Regardless, USC's passing game found stable ground in that second quarter, shredding the Penn State secondary as Trojan quarterback Mark Sanchez went virtuoso. He finished the game with an 80% completion rate, more than 400 yards and four touchdowns to earn game MVP honors.
The second half saw USC sleepwalk for the most part besides a broken-play 45-yard scoring pass to a wiiiiide open Ronald Johnson. Meanwhile, Penn State continued to play and score points, but USC's lead -- and the limited clock -- held off the surge.
Penn State had a magnificent season and did prove competitive at times with USC, but USC is USC for a reason and with a month off they took vicious, brutal, humiliating and decisive advantage when they found those openings in the second quarter.
In a bit of a sideshow moment, Joe Paterno refused a "contractual" pregame interview with ABC reporter Lisa Salters. Salters, miffed, outed his poor form and made known that he could be fined for his actions. She did say that all week the attention pointed towards him and not his team had led him to a "slow boil" capped by standing up all media attention as he coached the game from the press box. That's Joe though, always the curmudgeon and perhaps in the right however tactless.

As you mentioned, USC looked bored and sleptwalked (sleepwalked?) through the second half.
Therein lies USC's fatal flaw: they sleepwalk through most of their games, and it inevitable results in a loss to a moderately good Pac-10 team that the Trojans don't respect.
USC is a great team, but it's a team that believes it's own hype way to much, and they refuse to learn their lesson in this regard. That is the textbook definition of overrated.

Is it possible Sanchez was over shadowed by an above average performance of a Sec qb? Oh I forgot schedule doesn't matter and neither do personal stats.

Yo! Get real...Gators should quit flexing their tonsils or have surgery...I strongly suggest your Athletic Director contact USC Director and negotiate including USC on their schedule.
More than likely, Gator fans will soon learn to appreciate the USC marching Band playing the USC fight tune.

520 yards passing( a big chunk of Auburn's total for the season)4 td's against an unranked Mississippi team and the Citadel, Florida comes away with one win from the likes of them two games. Sec defense sure showed its ugly face in one of em. Hint; (Mississippi 31 Florida 30). The episodes of the National championsip quest I can live without.

You know overrated usc is the clown. It doesn't matter what SC does. There will always be myopic cretins like you to rationalize why they are not that good. The fact is they beat all the big teams they play and that clown is called scoreboard.

I am USC fan and would have love to see the Florida USC matchup more than anything, I am not too sure it would have been as easy, because I think Tebow maybe like a Vince Young in that he is a great college player with a will to win for his team and USC on the road. I would take USC over Florida at this point in time. Even if Florida wins in a blowout I would not consider them number one.
USC and Utah would have a good case.
With the close game Texas had tonight, they are should be out of the running for any share of the national title, great game.
USC and Utah had the style points. PAC 10 (5-0)

Sec defense at work down in the Cotton Bowl again. (When the Sec gets scored on they call it "Texas Tech can score", what a joke "qb scrambles for fifty against the Florida beaters".

Although we'll have to wait and see what happens with Texas/Ohio State and Florida/Oklahoma, so far the results tend to show that both the Big-12 (Mississippi beating Texas Tech and Oregon beating Oklahoma State) and the SEC (Utah beating Alabama) were overrated. Meanwhile, Utah (undefeated) and USC (with lopsided victories over both Ohio State and Penn State) were not given enough credit by the eastern-biased polls. If Texas does not beat Ohio State convincingly and if Florida does not defeat Oklahoma convincingly, it would certainly appear that the BCS did not get either of the top two teams into the championship game.

You are a biased clown who should set the bottle down and step away
from the computer. You really are another person trying to program us
like you were programed as a usc alum. It is amazing USC was ranked as
high as they were at the end of the regular season. They played a
bunch of weak teams and even got beat by one of them. They have a
bowl game at home and the refs made a few bad calls to take the wind
out of PSU sails everytime they looked like they were going to make a
run. Then PSU also made some huge mistakes too. Give us all a break and admit that your USC team is just not as good as at least 5 to 10
teams and you are a Clueless butthead
