As soon as the news was out that Patrick Nix was fired as offensive coordinator at Miami, the odds on quarterback Robert Marve transferring jumped from probable to near certainty. Marve was close to Nix. Much closer than he was to head coach Randy Shannon. Harris played well enough in the Emerald Bowl to Shannon that he stated that Harris would go into 2009 as the starter. That was enough for Marve.
"I had to get out," Marve told the AP from his family's home in Tampa. "I just decided that I can't play for coach Shannon."Marve has requested and received his release from Miami, but it apparently has come with some tight restrictions. He can't transfer to any team in Florida, plus no teams in the ACC or SEC. That means Florida, LSU and Tennessee -- three programs he was rumored to be considering are out.
No shock, the Marve family is not happy about the restrictions.
"We don't quite know the rules or how to approach things, but we're going to challenge it," Eugene Marve said.Good luck with that.
Coach Shannon, while saying he would have liked Marve to have stayed hardly seemed broken up by the loss even before Marve formally sought his release.
"If Robert (Marve) chooses to leave the University of Miami, we got Jacory, we got Taylor Cook, we got Cannon Smith, so we'll be fine," Shannon told the station. "We've got enough talent on this team, we've got an experienced quarterback with Jacory, if Robert leaves, Jacory will be our guy, he'll lead the way, because he has a lot of game experience."Roughly translated, "don't let the door hit you on your way out."
While Marve was a top recruit and named Mr. Football in Florida as a high school senior, Marve had a problematic time at Miami. He was injured in a car accident in his freshman year, causing him to redshirt the season. By the spring practices, it was clear that Marve would be the starter.
Marve, though, got in trouble before the season for allegedly breaking a mirror on a car. Coach Randy Shannon, who was hired in no small part for promising responsibility and accountability from the players, suspended Marve for the season opener.
Marve and his family were upset over this. They felt the penalty was harsher than the act. Marve was further frustrated by the decision of Shannon to give freshman Jacory Harris time at QB. Before he had even taken a snap in a game, it was already being speculating that he would transfer. He didn't, and got opportunities to start and remain the starter. Neither Marve or Harris, however, did much to seize the starting job.
Marve ultimately ended the season like it began -- with a suspension. This time, Marve was suspended for the Emerald Bowl because he missed class for the fourth time that semester. Again, feeling he was wronged. Claiming that he was merely late to the class.

Well, Robert Marve should be proud of his performance as a Freshmen... if he were a true freshmen like Jacory Harris. Unfortunately, Robert was in a car after getting completely drunk and although through no fault of his own, injured his hand. If he does not get into that accident, he is the starter half way through that year and Jacory Harris never signs with Miami. Now he plays amazingly in Spring practice with comparisons to the great Brett Farvre (like Marve with a F). But, again he screws up. This time for sgits and gihgles he breaks a window to impress some fraternity brothers. Suspended for game one. He openly bases, well his father does, for playing Jacory Harris a true freshmen, who it should be noted broke everyone of Marve's records from the year before and was Mr. Football the following year after Marve. So we are getting through the season with ups and downs, but the outlook is still good for his careers... right? WRONG! This idiot is late to class, one in which he had skipped three times earlier this year, because he was seeking extra help from a professor in a class that he was failing. So he gets suspended for the Emerald Bowl.
Ladies and gentleman these are the facts. Is Randy Shannon wrong for putting the strict rules on his release... sure. But, if this kid could have followed the rules in the first place, he would not even be leaving. Plain and simple, he lost his opportunity to be one of the greatest QB's in Miami history because he felt as if he was above everything. And, that may have worked in the old University of Miami, but not the new, good one.
A couple of points:
- Shannon should only keep Marve from playing in Florida schools and the ACC. let him play elsewhere in the SEC.
- Florida should be ashamed of itself and sanctioned, as it will hit papers soon that they have been in discussions with Robert Marve's father for weeks now about taking over after Tim Tebow leaves.
- It should be noted that Robert Marve was committed to Alabama for over a year and left because he did not see eye-to-eye with Nick Saban.
- This is the best coaching move for Miami in almost a decade.
GO CANES!!!!
Like many of you...I have been a die hard Cane since I can remember (certainly longer than Marve has been playing football). We are on an upward swing, but that also comes with many setbacks and dissapointments. For way too many seasons now, I have watched as we have steadily gotten worse. And now, with Coach Shannon at the helm,we are moving in the right direction. I completely agree with the decision to start Harris instead of Marve. Marve was given more than enough opportunity to lead us back to greatness, and wasted it with selfish, thug like behavior. Thanks to coach Shannon, we are not thugs anymore..nor should we follow one. I hope Marve can turn this around and grow from it. He has alot of potential and I think will do very well in his career. As for Nix.....Good ridance!!! What the hell was he thinking during the Emerald Bowl, let alone the regular season?? Where is the OFFENSE?? the excuse "Freshman" only goes so far. These guys have real talent, they do however need proper guidence. that is where the "Offensive Coordinator" is supposed to come in. I salute Coach Shannon for all his efforts to bring us back. Jacory, Keep doing what you are doing, you are gaining the respect of the players and the fans. do not dwell on the negative..focus on the positive. do this and you, the rest of the team, and us (the fans) can all look forward to a great future. GO CANES!!!!!!
Marve looks like he has some maturity issues, but he's a college kid. It seems a little ridiculous that the University of Miami is allowed to block a kid from transferring to a school of his choice. Marve is a college kid with a skill that allows him to get his tuition paid for - ultimately no different than a kid with some other skill that earns him a scholarship. The kid has the right to choose a new college that he thinks works for him, and get a scholarship if the new college will give it.
If the NCAA and/or Donna Shalala fail to step in remind Randy Shannon that he's working for an academic institution and dealing with a college student (even if he is a football player), they will lose whatever credibility they have left. It will be one more sign that it's time for the NFL and NBA to start real minor league programs (where people like Randy Shannon can go work) and have universities start acting like institutions of higher education again, instead of professional sports franchises.
Let us not forget that Marve was not asked to leave UM nor was he asked to leave the football team. Therefore his scholorship remains in tact. It is his choice to try and play somewhere else, and therefore Coach Shannon has every right to place restrictions on where he can play. Are they too strict...sure, but still valid.
Simply put, Marve just doesn't have the intangibles at this time. Whereas Harris seems to. Blame definitely has to be put on Nix, but the facts speak for themselves: Marve started every game he wasn't suspended. Randy continuously went back to Marve, even when he was playing very poorly mid-season. I am never one to tell talent to leave, but with his 'entourage' swaying his decisions and attitude, I don't think him sitting on the bench for the next three years would be sitting too well. My thoughts are that Randy is pissed his dad was going around speaking with schools for where Marve should transfer, and rightfully so. So he closed every door for Marve to get one of those schools. Harsh? Absolutely. But someone has to lead these soldiers to glory.

It amazes me...when black kids act out, they are immediately labeled thugs, when white kids act out...all the excuses come out..oh he's just a college kid...blah blah blah...canelex..i have to applaud you..this is the first damn time i heard anyone call this white joker a thug...and whereas I personally don't think that any of these kids are true thugs...(none of them are out shooting people or selling drugs) it's nice that at least one person isn't excusing this kid's behavior
