Billey Joe Johnson's recent and mysterious death has generated a ton of national attention. First, the NAACP stepped in with an independent investigation, circumventing the normal police process, and determined that Johnson's death was not a suicide. Now -- likely as a result of the NAACP's determination -- the Johnson family has hired legal counsel in order to manage their best legal interests. And they've hired a firm with pretty large national exposure, The Cochran Firm, founded by late O.J. Simpson defense attorney Johnnie Cochran.
"There has been so much speculation in the community surrounding the circumstances of the death of one the most respected high school athletic stars in the area," says Jerome Carter, with The Cochran Firm Mobile. All of this isn't to say that something related to foul play happened, but as I said before, it would have been shocking if the NAACP conducted their investigation, determined suicide wasn't the cause of death and then just moved on.
"The family cannot understand why their son would take his own life with such a bright future ahead of him," continued Carter. "They are looking for answers."
And unless there is some striking evidence to counteract the NAACP's conclusion, you can almost rest assured that there will be plenty of noise surrounding the resulting autopsies and investigations.

It's a pure tragedy that a another young black man life has ended in such a manner.
I blame the so call politicians of Mississippi especially the black ones who sit in office who were elected by the people and turn their backs on the people because they don't want to lose their golden egg for standing up for what's right.
Why should outsiders come in and help people whom are afraid to help themselves?
These acts of incidents goes on everyday in Mississippi and only when the media gets wind of it, the NAACP decides it wants to draw publicity like they are fighting for us when there are other cases just like this one that have been swept under the rug. Not to mention that there are black men receiving harsh sentences for medioka crimes or even worst, sent to prison for crimes that they didn't comitt.
The NAACP is like a Tea Kettle, make a lot of noise while the heat is on and when you turn off the heat, complete silence.
In order for the NAACP to regain the trust of the Black Community, and young people. They must see more actions on a daily basics, not when the cameras or on.

I live in Mississippi, as a matter of fact the the very same town as this kid. This does not happen EVERYDAY in Mississippi. No more than it happens in the rest of the country. Racism is not anymore prevalent here than any where else. I'm sick of the label. The only reason this got any publicity is because he is a black kid from MS and that within itself made it a story.
If it had been a white kid and black officer the nation never would have heard about it.

Jayne,
You don't hear about incidents like this regarding black officers and white kids, because they don't happen. For one thing, if a black officer did try to do something to a white kid, we all know that that kid's parents would have that black officer's job, he'd be doing prison time in a heartbeat, and the police department would have no problem with throwing the officer under the bus. So why are white people getting upset that this kid's family is fighting back? It's a double-standard in America -- the Land of the Free -- if you are white.
And I agree with what anoyed [sic] said. The NAACP was originally created to help promote equality, but as an organization it has become corrupted by media-whoring and politics. But it doesn't change the fact that this kid died under suspicious circumstances which should be investigated independently of the local police department.

As a white woman whose seen this type of thing before... it is obvious that there was foul play. And if this were my child, I'd hire the best damm lawyers I could to go against the law enforcement agency who is trying to cover it up too! Call me greedy or whatever.. but I'd want those responsible for my child's death to pay dearly!!! WHATEVER IT TOOK!!! And if you can honestly say that you wouldn't.. then you don't love your children!

Where in this story does ot say anything about the deputy being white?
I mean, I realize that the NAACP probably would not investigate if it had been a colored deputy, but I haven't seen anything to make me think the deputy was white other than a bunch of ignorent RACIST comments.
Also, since when is the NAACP qualified to rule on whether the cause of death was suicide or not? I always thought that was up to coroners and maybe Police or FBI agents.

We are surrounded by idiots who believe they can make an instant analysis of a complex situation, then issue their judgments without knowing a shred of the evidence, especially the physical evidence. People would do more for the process of justice by keeping their mouths shut until the evidence is in and an investigation complete. And please, folks, don't whine the Nazi-invented word "racist" yet again.

I live in Louisiana and am an old white woman, and I'm here to tell you that if you wait until the investigation is over before you ask any questions, none will ever be asked. If there were any out of the ordinary circumstances involving a black man or boy, no one would ever know. They'd be not only swept under the rug but dumped in the nearest swamp forever.

First, we do not know the facts other than another young man has lost his life and a family is having to deal with it. Then, I complain about the NAACP, as they are today a farce. Why not jump in for all and not just blacks, as white, brown, yellow, and whatever are all colors, and that is what the C stands for in NAACP. The media will blow this out of proportion and will be sure to not let it be forgotten. A family cannot truly deal with a loss of a loved one if it is everyday in the headlines, whether it be a just or unjust loss. If Johnny C wants to investigate, then do it quietly and not through the media. Media, let people grieve and adjust.

I want to be a millionaire. I'll bet anybody 1 million dollars that this so called law firm will get a judgement of some substantial money and they still won't have their answer how he died. Hiring a LAW firm to find out how their love one died. Totally perposterous. GREED PEOPLE.

Hmmm...so if YOUR kid, who you believe is not a criminal, died by shotgun under suspicious circumstances by the police, you wouldn't want to sue? Would you consider it greed then? Would you not hire a lawyer (who, by the way, do employ PIs anyway)?
Scroll up, because you have proven the point I made before.

They want to know how their son died. Lawyers will be able to work within the framwork of the law to obtain all relevant documents related to their sons death. Just becaused the family hired a law firm doesn't mean they are looking for a payday. Your comment is insulting. If the boy in question was white and the officer was black, on one would have a problem with the family hiring a law firm. In fact, it would be expected. Racism is alive and well in this country so Blacks have a right to be suspicious when a Black boy dies and a White officer is involved. I'm not saying the officer is at fault but until the facts are known, it's possible.

I for one know of the outlook of some of the people that post here. But what’s discouraging
is the way YOU wrote this.
"All of this isn't to say that something related to foul play happened, but as I said before, it would have been shocking if the NAACP conducted their investigation, determined suicide wasn't the cause of death and then just moved on." Sounds to me like YOU have made up YOUR mind. But you have a nice day.

What a great country we live in. And the great people we are, that our only concern is for the naaacp and a law firm and not the death of a child. No wonder they want to bomb us. God bless you all.
