Pat Devlin never seemed that enthusiastic about Penn State in the first place -- he originally committed to Miami only to decommit when Larry Coker was fired -- and now he can be unenthusiastic somewhere else: Multiple sources have told FightOnState.com that redshirt sophomore qurterback Pat Devlin has left the program and intends to transfer to another school. This is relevant: Devlin came off the bench and led a scoring drive in Penn State's win against Ohio State, and his departure leaves that guy with an extremely Italian last name (Paul Cianciolo) as the only other scholarship quarterback on the roster. If Clark gets knocked out of the Rose Bowl it could get ugly.As of this report, the destination was unclear, though sources indicate he is looking to transfer to the Football Championship Subdivision (DI-AA).
"Ugly" also seems a good word to describe how the transfer went down:
GO AWAY FROM PENN SHHHHHTATE!According to a source close to Paterno, Devlin, along with his parents, Mark and Connie, visited with the 81-year-old coach on Monday to express their displeasure over their son's situation. The Devlins brought with them a list of issues they had about Penn State's handling of their son.
By the end of the meeting, Pat Devlin had informed Paterno that he was leaving, the source said. With one game to play, however, Devlin's decision over whether he would play in the Jan. 1 Rose Bowl against Southern Cal was left dangling.
Yesterday, according to another source close to the team, Paterno asked Devlin if he had reached a verdict. The sophomore said he had not. Paterno made the decision for him, and by the end of the day, Devlin's locker was cleaned out.
More worrisome for Penn State fans is the eligibility situation. Cianciolo is a senior, Clark a junior, and Penn State's recruiting class currently contains zero quarterbacks. Penn State is playing with fire here.

Curtis Drake is a 2 star qb who is currently committed in the 2009 class.
Your point still stands, of course, but I just want to say that for the record.

i'm glad for devlin.maybe now the psu coaching staff will get their head out of their rears.he was way more qualified than clark.if it wasnt for clark's ego we may have won the iowa game.he did not think about the team at all, just himself.devlin will do great wherever he goes.let's keep starting some more players who have a big ego and want to be the stars like andrew quarless.if he makes his block when we are on the 2 in iowa royster is in for the td and the game is a different story.also in the same game he had a ball right in his hands and dropped it when he heard footsteps.maybe he should get another dui and smoke some more dope.

Pat is a great talent, who would have only seen one year of playing with JoePa as coach. I remember when Paterno came to Downingtown to personally recruit Pat, and how happy they were, that Devlin would attend Penn St. We all knew what the outcome could be. I hope he does well at Delaware, but why not choose a Div. 2 college like West Chester? The scouts will find you with that much talent. Good luck Pat.

good luck to Dev....many of us thought Paterno just grabbed devlin so old joepa would not have to play against the great quarterback and never intended to give him a serious shot in the first place. Go to delaware dev and be a blue hen........pros look there!

I agree everyone wants to put Clark down because of his interception into the wind during the Iowa game, but as I recall no one thought Penn State would even be where they are right now. And some of that had to do with Clark! You gotta give him some credit. The OSU touchdown was no biggie I was there and Clark did all the work to get them there and he had a concussion! So stop hating on the boy. No bad blood towards Devlin he is a great QB and I hope whereever he goes he gets some playing time in. But just a he had to sit back and wait so did Clark. He sat back quietly and patient until it was him time!

i was also at the OSU game.devlin's td no biggie? you werent watching the same game i was.if he doesnt score that td then we probably wouldn't have won that game, the big ten,and we wouldn't be going to the rose bowl.i supposed your content with the bcs screwing us? are you kidding me? utah, tex tech and usc all ahead of us?also explain to me why clark didn't think about the team first in the iowa game and tell the coaches he wasn't up to playing.during the week leading up to the iowa game he was off in practice.not picking up on the blitzes, not finding receivers, overthrowing and underthrowing them.but i guess it's ok as long as you don't hurt his ego.

Good-bye Devlin! I had heard the grumblings all season and was pretty sure it was coming. Devlin is just another "Me First" punk, who had absolutely not place on a PSU roster... (by the way, there are still a few other guys on the current roster that should go as well...) He didn't want to come to PSU in the first place and now he is making a huge mistake - if he thinks the pros are gonna seriously consider another pro QB coming out of Delaware he is absolutely crazy. One great year as a starter at PSU would have gotten him a shot. I'm also glad Joe told him he couldn't come to the Rose Bowl... one more thing he'll never get to experience - a New Year's Day Bowl game!

Caution to Pat Devlin!! I would be careful going to Delaware if I were Pat. Offense was great when they had Kirk Ciarrocca as offensive coordinator, but he left with Flacco and went to Rutgers. New Offense Coordinator Brian Ginn's play calling lead thier team to the University's worst season ever! This with tranferred Ohio State's second team QB Robby Schoenhoft leading the offense. I am sure he thought he could do a "Flacco" too. Blue Hens also did not play transfer sophomore QB Sean Hakes who was a top recruit in the same class as Pat because he was not cleared through the NCAA until very late in the season. Pat would have stiff competition from Hakes and Schoenhoft. Hakes attended the Michigan camp with Devlin when they were both being recruited there in 2005. If I were any of these QB's, I would run from Delaware unless Ginn is replaced. He is way over his head. Delaware will not produce an NFL QB with Ginn there. Keeler seems committed to Ginn. I do not see him being replaced soon. Even if everyone in the stands calls each offensive play before the break the huddle. Just not the same offense under Ginn.

UDFan, are you Mickey Matthews or Andy Talley?
To say that interception machine Rob Schoenhoft was "leading the offense" at Delaware is a tremendous overstatement. There's a good reason why OU had moved him to TE: he was never going to play QB again as a Buckeye. In fact, he was so bad at QB that he was moved to TE at UD at the end of the season and many suspect that's where his future at UD lies. He's a great kid but there's little danger he'll unseat anyone as starting QB.
Hakes didn't play because he couldn't pick up the offense, prompting Keeler to have to start a senior WR and TE at QB. Unlikely that Hakes is ever going to be anything other than an emergency QB at UD.
If Devlin comes in, he's the starter immediately unless he completely tanks. There's little doubt about Devlin being the guy if/when he arrives in Henland.
As for Ginn, the jury is still out on him. Had Schoenhoft or Lou Ritacco played in a half-way capable manner, the Hens' offense wouldn't have suffered as badly as it did. It's a little tough to call plays for a spread offense when you don't have a QB who can throw effectively downfield.

Let's be real here. I'm a PSU fan and a Devlin fan, I actually graduated from his high school. I'm sure Paterno and co. told Devlin that he would be the starter after Morelli, nothing wrong with that. Devlin set all the PA passing records and was rated the #6 QB prospect in the country at the time, it was a safe bet he would be. That said, Devlin didn't outplay Clark and that's all there is to it. I hope Devlin gets some playing time because I think he will develop into a great QB, but regardless this will hurt PSU big time if Clark goes down!

So long Devlin...there is no "I" in team. The biggest game in recent history for the program and you leave. They will win without you. As far as a pro career you weren't even the best qb at State. And by the way real men don't bring mommy and daddy in to talk to the coach carrying a list!!

Sounds like JoePa promised the kid would play and reneged.
I do not think a QB of Devlin's talent would choose PSU,
especially PSU(not exactly known for producing Pro QBs),without
the idea he was going to get a lot of the snaps. He made the right
decision to leave. I just wish that Devlin could come back to haunt ol'JoePa on a football field. I think JoePa's integrity could be in question on this one.

Del your out of your mind- integrity? sure he might have told him he would start- But it is a sport and the bottom line is production, if he didn't beat out Clark in the spring- why then would he start! Its not about words but rather production! So be it he is just a kid that needs MOMMY and DADDY! Go JoePa you did right- you gave him a chance- he couldn't decide so you did it for him- clean out that Locker and he will never get that opportunity to play in a rose bowl! I wish him luck but come on to question integrity why JoePa's why not the kid's? Apparently he was living on words and didn't feel the need to work to get better! The only one getting haunted from this one will be Devlin. It might seem to impair State but they will find a way to overcome this one just a good team would! Devlin on the other hand will never be what he could- he is just going to keep running when the going gets tough! Thats not a character of a QB or anyone for that matter on my Team!

OK...Devlin is a very good QB who hasn't had much opportunity to play at PSU. But he still comes across as a whiner who wants to take his ball and helmut and go home if he doesn't get his way. Sometimes, growing up is extra tough and always seems to go all the way down to the wire...without fail. What makes a man? I'd probably say whatever it is, time will always be involved as a major factor. Best wishes to you, Pat Devlin...and thanks for the Ohio State memories.

I watched the Rose Bowl in agony. Penn State never changed out of that four man rush that Never got to Sanchez. A with-it coach would have changed things up a few times.....It hurt to see that team get beat by a susect Southern Cal team It was obvious that scirotto could not handle his job and badly needed help or needed Sanchez to hurry his throws before those wide receivers could run free. Poor coaching led to that defeat. This isn't 1959 anymore Time for more advanced coaching to take over. The ruination of Pat Devlin is a travesty that the Penn State coaching staff should be made to suffer for a long time. If I was a top recruit, I would be very wary of any promises from this coaching staff. Too bad Devlin could not transfer to West Virginia. They need a quality replacement for Pat White. Devlin is a quality individual on and off the field.
