So it is written, so it shall be done. Pac-10 meets the Big 10's eleventh member as USC challenges Penn State in the Rose Bowl. Tradition wins out for two teams felled by a single defeat, making this one of the better Rose Bowl games in recent memory. There were no head-to-head battles between the programs this year, but their common opponents give an unclear picture of where this one will go. Penn State thrashed Oregon State on Sept. 6, 45-14. USC followed that on Sept. 13 with a nationally-televised thrashing of Ohio State, 35-3. Then, the predictable on Sept. 25, with Oregon State working USC on a Thursday night game, 27-21. Penn State then snuck by Ohio State
The real story here is of a ridiculously talented team with the nation's best defense and a stubborn offense going up against another excellent defensive team that played fantastic offensive football early in the year before slowing down a bit. Television will play up the contrast in styles between USC's bubbly Pete Carroll and Penn State's curmudgeonly Joe Paterno. Think Jeff Spicoli meets Danny DeVito's snarling impersonation of Penguin in Batman Returns.
Color us amused.
As a preview of sorts, we probably owe you a prediction here. Personally, as respectable as these teams are, I doubt there will be little drama in this game. Yes, Penn State absolutely thrashed Oregon State while Oregon State all but whipped USC. Yes, this is just another good year for USC while it's a special one for Penn State. Yes, I'm a USC alum.
However, USC with a month off is nearly unbeatable. They're nearly unbeatable even when they only have a week to prepare for opponents. The Oregon State and Texas-type games will happen on occasion but USC always keeps it close and has had an overall talent edge against everyone they've faced since sometime in 2002. More importantly, their record under Pete Carroll against some very good Big 10 opponents is ridiculous.
In 2002, they crushed one of the better teams in Iowa history, 38-17. The next year they crushed perhaps the best Michigan team since the Wolverines' 1997 title team, 28-14, in a game that was nowhere near as close as the score suggested, as Michigan was held scoreless until nearly the fourth quarter. In 2006, another solid Michigan team was whipped 32-18, once USC decided to move into the 21st century in the second half and throw the football. And then last year USC breezed past Illinois 49-17.
Is Penn State really that different? Doubtful. As far as talent and results, Penn State reminds me most of those two Michigan teams perhaps with a little more creative offense and more options in the running game.
At this point USC is bored of the entire Big 10/Rose Bowl thing, but they were last year as well and came ready to play. USC won't be caught napping and although Penn State is a fantastic team -- particularly the team that destroyed opponents through September and October -- USC should come out ahead. They'll dig the venue and the national attention and do what USC does when they have time to prepare for an opponent -- crush them. There is no Vince Young to worry about on Penn State's team, which has been the lone BCS exception in the Carroll era.

just think about it. If Penn State hadn't lost to Iowa. Florida should send Iowa a thank you letter.

The Rose Bowl is USC's second home. Penn State's best moment in L.A. will be when the team visits Disneyland. Otherwise, the Trojans will dismantle Grandpa Joe's team. 49-14 USC.

if the Lions' running game is anywhere near as effective as Oregon State then watch out SC - throughout the season, every team that has been problematic for the Trojans has done so with the running game, particularly small, agile and difficult to locate running backs. USC better bone up on Penn's running game and do so without sacrificing downfield coverage - a tricky balancing act - oh, and the offense better show up to play, they have had some rather lack luster performances late in the schedule ... fight on!

Penn State has a far better offense than Michigan's '06 team did, but I don't think they'll take down USC. What I want to see is a BCS bowl that's not completely stacked against the B10. Let's see what happens when USC or Florida has to play on New Year's Day in the Horseshoe or Camp Randall, shall we?

I know USC has had great teams in the recently, and very well may be the better team at this point, but it is unfair that the Rose Bowl is a home game for them. That is worth 10 points. If this game was at Beaver Stadium in State College, it would be a very different situation.

The bowls are great but the shame of it, especially this year, a playoff would have been awesome...why no respect for Penn State...lowest ranked of the majors with a single loss...whether JoePA is in the press box or along the sidelines look for a PSU win...already looking forward to the Blue/White game this April then to rock with the crowd at Beaver Stadium in 2009...GO STATE!

Joe Paterno is the legend of all legends. He made this team believe that their preseason ranking of #22 was just horse#$%.......I cant wait to see him walk out of the tunnel at the rose bowl and put a whippin on those crybabies of USC which has the crapiest conference........PENN. ST 31 USC 20. Pete Carroll will have another tear to shed

ahahaha to all those people who think SC is going to loose to PSU that is hilarious! SC's defense is way too dominant this really isn't going to be a game, more like a vacation for PSU so I hope they enjoy California! SC 35 to 10

35-0 I do not think so PSU offense was pretty damn good this year and our defense is as good or better then USC. Before you comment you should watch both teams

USC is nowhere close to being good as the previous other teams. I see Penn State winning here, but it will be a very good game.

PSU is coming to the Rose Bowl to play football and with all of their tools intact, will win by a decent margin. Next year however will be different.

Pete Carroll's record versus Big 10 teams in bowls may be impressive to date; however, none of them came ugainst PSU and the legend that is Joe Paterno. Joe Pa also has a 'pretty good' overall bowl record, and is already the legend that Pete Carrol may someday be.
When Penn State wins the game, and make no mistake that they will (Penn State also does quite well after having additonal time to prepare for a given opponent) even with it being a 'home' game for USC, it will simply be additional ammunition for the majority of the country that prefers a playoff system, as USC should be ranked below PSU going into this game.
We are ... Penn State !!!
