There was a ton of speculation this week that Charlie Weis, after meeting with his boss on December 8, might be out as the head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Of course, that didn't stop Weis from telling potential recruits that he would still be in charge of the football team.Turns out ... he was right.
Sources have told Irish Eyes that athletic director Jack Swarbrick will publicly announce, most likely within the next 24 hours, that Weis will be back for his fifth season in South Bend."Uncertainty" is a nice way of putting it I suppose; it seemed almost guaranteed that there would at least be some sort of ultimatum put on Weis regarding win totals in the future, at the very least.
There has been some uncertainty about Weis' future since the 38-3 loss to USC, but it appears Swarbrick will be sticking behind Weis.
But there's been no official word of that and presumably, Sportscenter's reporting of this information can count as "confirmation", right? (Assuming, of course, that Scoop Mortensen isn't behind this story, in which case Weis is almost assuredly fired.)
The fact of the matter is that it would be incredibly difficult for the Irish to actually let Weis go given the, ahem, weight of his contract, and the best case scenario -- with potential replacements Skip Holtz, Tom O'Brien and Brian Kelly all staying put -- seems to be letting the big man ride out his whale of deal.

Bravo to the Notre Dame athletic director. I hope he gives Weiss a lifetime contract!

They made the right decision. Not like firing him is going to give us a national championship next season. Firing him would only set the program back YEARS (like a decade or two). Firing him would cause some of our best recruits to change their minds and commit elsewhere as well as some of our own players to transfer. Sure he may not be winning right now and I'm not any happier than the next ND fan, but YOU MUST HAVE PATIENCE!!! GIVE HIM ONE MORE SEASON TO RIGHT THE SHIP!!! IF HE CANNOT PRODUCE A WINNING TEAM BY NEXT SEASON, THEN IT IS OKAY TO CONSIDER FIRING HIM...AND IT WOULD PROBABLY BE RIGHTLY SO!
Players just don't come out of high school and win national championships their first season as a starter... or quite possably their second season either. Charlie must develop Clausen, Allen, Floyd, Tate, Kamara, and Co. If players like Clausen, Allen, Tate, and Kamara (Widely Considered the near best players at their positions) cannot improve and win some decent games next season, THEN, AND ONLY THEN IS WEIS A FAILURE AS A HEAD COACH!!!
I understand last years horrendous (3-9) campaign and 43 years of dominance over Navy down the drain is inexcusable, but you have too look at the bare cubbard of linemen and talent in general left by Willingham and lack of game expierance for Weis' subs in his first 2 seasons. Weis made a mistake when he was up 20 or 30 points over his opponents by not putting his subs in for some expierance. Which would have helped for '07. But you know what, every coach makes mistakes. Ask Lou Holtz about that collarbone injury on QB Ron Powlus from full contact scrimages in practice during the mid 90s. (6-4) is also inexcusable considering the 3000 fiber count schedule they had this year, but his team is starting to wake up and play good old fashioned Irish ball...atleast prior to Clausen's midseason slump. But (6-4) is a whole lot better than (3-9)...any year, regardless of the schedule.
-Besides-
Rockne had a terrible season in 1928 when his backup players was mostly FR. and Soph. after apocalyptical injuries to his starters (Sr. and Jr.). Thats why he suffered a (6-4) season.
Even the best coaches have rough seasons now and then. Pete Carroll, whom many sportswritters and fans consider the coach of this decade did not have a gracious start at USC. His first year was something like (6-4) or (7-5).
Part of the problem with ND football within the last 20 years is instabillity at Head Coach. YOUT CANNOT HIRE A COACH AND REALISTICALLY EXPECT A NATIONAL TITLE WITHIN 2-3 SEASONS!! ESPECIALLY WITH THE HIGH ACADEMIC STANDARDS AT ND!! TRY MORE LIKE 5-7 SEASONS!!
I know that sounds like an eternity but coaches need time to settle and build their dynasty. 2-3 seasons is not adequate, nor is 4.
Had ND fired Weis, they would not have gotten Urban Meyer. Plain and simple. He wouldn't leave a potential National Champion Florida Squad for ND. It didn't happen 4 years ago when he left Utah for Florida and it won't happen in the near future. ND got to sure of themselves when they fired Willingham because they believed Meyer would come to South Bend. Unfortunately, ND had it all blow up in their face.
So all you over zealous ND fans decide:
1) Would you rather fire Weis and suffer a major setback of epic proportions and watch unexcuseable 3-6 win seasons for a whole decade or two,
-or-
2) Keep Weis atleast one more season to prove himself worthy or not of the job? Anything better than 7 wins, I believe earns him the job. Anything less...then he should be fired!

please tell me it's not true. do you really think these kids want to play for him next year. they had no heart or drive this year. we are going to be another 500 or worse team in 2009 and no bowl invite. we loss this bowl then close the books on him.

Looks like Notre Dame is willing to cut a new coach some slack, as long as he's white.

Weis should stay. Next year Notre Dame plays Washington 0-11 and Washington St 2-11 (they beat Washington 16-13). More notches in his holster beating teams with losing records. I am also sure the phone is ringing off the hook at Weis's agent office with job offers...not ! Weis mirrors the problem with our economy.....he is another overpaid exec ripping off his employer. Notre Dame power people are too arrogant to admit their mistake and will let the Alums and fanbase suffer through another agonizing season. The only bowling ND should accept has 10 pins and an alley.

Another failed attempt by an AOL "sportswriter," "sports blogger," whatever you people call yourselves, to be funny. No surprise there.
Actually, it's no big surprise Weis is coming back, and this is a pretty smart decision by ND. If they fired Weis now, especially to add to the 50000 other position openings available this season, they were just going to end right back up in this position four or so years from now. There is simply no one out there right now who would go to ND right now and turn that program into USC, Florida or even Ohio State. I'm not even sure I believe Brian Kelly would be a big deal there, plus he said he was staying at Cincy before this announcement.

Swarbrick made a good decision. Weis was a victim of Jimmy Claussen. Jimmy is a "Brady Quinn" wannabe and he just couldn't reconcile himself to the fact that he was Jimmy Claussen..."non big play maker". Weis is a good coach. We've all seen it. Cut him some slack guys.
