The Heisman campaign of Ohio State running back Beanie Wells sort of fell off the map in the season opener, when he injured his right foot against Youngstown State. Wells then sat out the Buckeyes' next three games - including a blowout loss at USC - and his chance to be named college football's best player went out the window. Not lost among those paying attention, though, is the fact that Wells is still really, really good.
Wells gashed Illinois for 144 yards and a touchdown in today's Ohio State win. With that effort, and despite playing just eight games this season, Wells is just 42 rushing yards shy of a 1,000-yard season.
And just for good measure, Wells also hurdled an Illinois defender in the Buckeyes' win today - the second time that he's gone for the vertical juke this season. Video of today's leapfrog is after the jump.
Not bad, eh? Truth be told, Wells' first defender hurdle might top that one. I say that, if for no other reason, because it came in his first game back from that lingering injury earlier this season.
I'd still have to argue that Wells' highlights are 2A and 2B in terms of "2008's Best Running Back Hurdle Plays" - both just inches behind Knowshon Moreno's gravity-tester against Central Michigan.
Let the debate begin:

It drives me crazy that there wasn't any attention brought to Knowshon's hurdle until Beanie pulled one. Knowshon's hurdle while not as impressive on the finish... still gets the style points for putting his hand on the guys back and leap frogging him.
You don't see Beanie needing to use his hand to help keep him up and he is 6'1" and 237, Moreno is what 5'10" 210, come on let's get real. Also, he had 2 hurdles this season, one of which was coming off an injury. So, style or power? I think power anyday wins.
