Former FSU QB Drew Weatherford's Feelings Are Hurt

Quarterback Drew Weatherford, now a senior, led the Seminoles through some of their most turbulent seasons in memory. 2005 was Weatherford's first year as a starter and despite passing for 3,220 yards it was a five-loss season for the Seminoles. In 2006 and 2007 Weatherford was the face of the Seminoles' offense for back-to-back 7-6 seasons, an embarassment for a team which once regularly competed for national titles.

In 2008, despite 33 starts to his name, Weatherford was bumped in favor of sophomore Christian Ponder. But he didn't get moved to second string; that spot fell to another sophomore, D'Vontrey Richardson. The former warrior had been relegated to clipboard holder and sideline cheerleader.

And finally, his frustration over the ignomious end to his FSU career has bubbled to the surface. Check out a handful of quotes from the Florida Times-Union:

"I really think that if someone was better than me I could admit it," said Weatherford, a fifth-year senior who went from starter to third team just three days before Florida State's season opener.

"That's when things really, really, really didn't add up," Weatherford said. "To swallow your pride and line up behind a guy that you're think you're better than every day is very, very difficult."

"There are certain things that Devo can do that I can't do when it comes to running (and) Christian can do some things I can't do," Weatherford conceded. "But overall neither of them are a better quarterback than I am right now."

And one more gem:

"I completely disagree with their decision," Weatherford said. "I respect their right to make the decision (but) I deserve to be the starter."

"You feel like you've been cheated, that's something's been taken away from you."

While any competitor feels confident in his abilities, Weatherford ought to tak a gander at the scoreboard. Under Christian Ponder the Noles' formerly stagnant offense has found a spark, and FSU is 6-2 for the first time since 2004 -- Chris Rix's last year.

Frankly, Jimbo Fisher's decision to shake things up at the QB position show that he could be the right man to lead FSU football into the future. No doubt Bobby Bowden, known for his loyalty to his seniors, would have started Weatherford. Fisher made the right call, and it's a shame that Weatheford has resorted to publicly displaying his sour grapes.
