Last weekend was nice, right? You mowed the lawn. Maybe ran some errands. College football was quiet. Then boom! this weekend happens and it's back to the insanity of a few weeks ago and the entirety of the 2007 season.No. 5 Texas took down No. 1 Oklahoma in a big way today, winning 45-35 behind a dogged second-half showing. No. 2 Alabama had the decency to sit this week out while No. 3 LSU was taken to the woodshed by Florida in The Swamp 51-21. Elsewhere, No. 4 Missouri now shoulders that "fraud" albatross after Oklahoma State slowed down Chase Daniel and emerged victorious 28-23.
For good measure, No. 7 Texas Tech barely survived a home scare against lowly Nebraska, winning in overtime 37-31.
You know what this means?
Paranoia. Alabama, Texas, Penn State, USC, BYU and Georgia by virtue of victories today are now on upset watch, that's what it means. And when half of them lose in the coming weeks, then what?
I can't stress it enough, these upsets make for great TV but only cloud the title picture and if they happen enough, create second and third opportunities for teams that probably should have been out of the title race (ahem, LSU last year with two losses). How much disorder should we tolerate?

College football gets cussed day and night, yet KU won the basketball championship after losing to K-State during the regular season and nobody complains about that loss. A playoff wouldn't help us know who the best team is, it would just make the arguments easier!

I imagine that the headline from Brian Grummell was an intentional overstatement made in order to stir up some theoretical interest. Well, it worked! Insanity in the upper rankings is very much a commonplace in College Football, especially after a week-end of inter-conference/divisional match-ups. I don't know if it's insanity as much as it is the nature of the game on the collegiate level. These are amateurs and a majority of the talent is fresh off of a high-school football field. "Big-time players" will always make big-time plays, but it's not as impressive considering the overall
level of talent in even a Div.1A game. Hence the severity and ripple effect of a true upset on the professional level. It's not expected as much for professional athletes to have poor showings. Top NFL teams falling to sub-par opponents on a regular basis would be somewhat insane but even on a professional level we all know that on any given Sunday it is expected to have a few surprise outcomes. So yes, a topsy-turvy year in College Football is to be expected and is the norm and I'll have it no other way. That's what I love about
the game. Unaware QBs, mishandled snaps, missed FGs and XPs, QBs running wild all over the field, etc.. Will the real #1 team in College Football please stand up?

Well, so far so good for Ohio State this year with only 1 loss thus far. But the problem is that Joe Paterno has his team playing inspired ball trying to outdo Bobby Bowden in the win column and
his Nittany Lions would love nothing more than to find a way to get a national championship for him. Ohio State can't afford another loss which means they have to go through Penn St. as well as 4 other conference opponents who play especially hard against ranked teams. Next week @ Michigan State can be just the boost that they'll need if they can pull it off. It can get interesting for them but unfortunetly Penn State has blown out
just about all of it's opponents including Wisconsin, who gave Ohio State a run for it's money this weekend. Good luck to your Buckeyes David but I do believe that your hopes for a national title disappeared after that week #2 spanking at the hands of USC. Maybe a Cotton Bowl or Sugar Bowl will be in order at season's end.

All Im saying is year in year out Ohio State is there most years they send great players to the NFL no team sends more in a stretch of 5 years. And years we have gotten blown out of bowl games our would be juniors and seniors are playing in the NFL on sundays while our 18 and 19 year olds are playing teams with 8 to 10 5th year seniors 22 to 24 year olds in usually a SEC or Usc's home field. Address that please. We are being over looked while the poll voters look at every other over rated team in the country trying to make them something that isn't. When was the last time Ohio State lost a big game in Ohio Stadium. Home field means so much especially when teams are basicly even.
