Wisconsin linebacker Jonathan Casillas is due in court Friday to face DUI and other charges related to an August 24 incident, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports. Casillas was pulled over by university police while driving his moped with a passenger on it. His preliminary blood alcohol level was .15, almost twice Wisconsin's .08 limit.
Badger coach Bret Bielema told the Wisconsin State Journal that he has already disciplined Casillas and the linebacker will not face additional disciplinary measures. Casillas will not miss any games due to jail time, either; the worst penalty he can face is a $300 fine, a $355 surcharge, and a nine-month suspension of his driver's license.
Now, there's absolutely nothing funny about drunk driving, which kills about 13,000 people a year in the United States, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Casillas is lucky he and his passenger weren't hurt and didn't hurt anybody. And I know, gas is quite expensive these days. But ... come on. A moped?
With a passenger?
At least we know he wasn't speeding.
This has to be the most embarrassing college football player incident since Kansas's Dion Rayford went batcakes over a missing chalupa and got stuck in the drive-thru window at a Taco Bell. Why do I have a feeling that the bulk of Casillas's in-house punishment involved having to endure the hoots of laughter as the details of his incident became known to his teammates?

This is nothing new for badger football players. Check out what happened to Joe Monty (former DE) in 2006 while he was on his moped.

Yeah, technically he was driving and he could have been impared enough to hit someone. It does seem a little silly though, kind of like you can get a DUI if you're caught sleeping in your car and are drunk (and never drove anywhere after you were drunk).

A moped is a motorized vehicle. With a .15 BA he was impaired.
He was a danger to himself, his passenger, and perhaps pedestrians.
There is nothing at all humerous about this. He should face the same consequences as if driving a car.

He is facing the same consequences as if he'd been driving the car, and he didn't get any special treatment for being an athlete. That is the standard punishment for first-offense DUI in Wisconsin.

I've drove race cars at .15 and lapped the field. It depends on the person. Some are falling down drunk at this level and others are barely affected. I wouldn't recommend it though. Had I cut a tire or some other melee occured would have I over reacted? I don't think so but we'll never know. I was just proving a point to some associates that I could out drive them even when twice the legal limit.

This is not so odd. About 10-15 years ago there was a guy here in Fl that got a DUI for riding his lawnmower up to the nearby store!! And they routinely give them out to bicyclists! They can also give you one if you have no way home, and decide to sleep it off in your car, because if you have your keys you might still wake up and drive before you should!!

Hey!.... Football players have been known NOT to be the sharpest tacks in the drawer and this guy is no exception.
However, Looks like the Campus cops are looking for more revenue these days, to keep their Judge in beer money or whatever ? .... Got to keep that revenue stream flow'n.
Oh!.. lest I forget -- Warren.. Your the type that would put your own mother behind bars or turn in a neighbor becuz their lawn sprinklers were on too long... What a maroon.

I thought people who drive mopeds are very cool. Have I been mislead by my father and brother-in-law, who spend inordinate amounts of time on fixing up what looks like bikes with little engines? No! Those who yearn for motorcycles but haven't gotten because their wives think it might be "too dangerous" are not opting for the "next best thing." Mopeds are out there and are just as mighty! So to be driving drunk on one - geesh! -10 miles an hour is fast and dangerous (I did not need to add that). I think the real issue here is carrying the passenger. I used to say, "yeah, well, I'd like to see you do that with a passenger," now I won't.

Hey warren, you're an idiot! And ern, it's Wisconsin, of course she was a fat chick. Most mopeds go about 30 mph with only the driver so they were barely going fast enough to stay up on two wheels.

Over 90% of students on large campuses drive mopeds. That's not so embarassing. Just getting the DUI is really bad, football star or not. UW Madison must issue tons for moped driving.

Why is this news!? Did every DUI that day or week make the national news. This is so unjust. The nationally mandaded DUI law, AKA MAD law, is unjust in itself making criminals out of people who do not deserve it - it is administered differently in each state.

What is really interesting is how the coach handled it. No missed games. Really a fine way to make and example of how it works in Wisconsin. What a joke
