ECU Will. Not. Go. Away.
After a fairly unpalatable morning set of games, we had some intriguing matchups this afternoon; Georgia, East Carolina, Oregon, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech -- the latter by default because the ACC is horrible -- all had BCS aspirations heading into the third week of college football.Four of those teams still do, but it wasn't for a lack of trying to fail.
Georgia needed a last second interception by Chris Smelley (Dugout Name and license plate: SMLLYCOX) to overcome what really is looking like a disturbingly stout South Carolina defense (it wasn't just NC State, we swear!). The 'Cocks held Knoshown Moreno to just 79 yards on 20 carries even though he punched one in, and Matthew Stafford was hardly effective. But the Dogs held on and their BCS chances prevail.
Exciting recap I know, but that's because I spent most of the afternoon watching a shoddy YouTube-like feed of East Carolina squaring off against Tulane. ECU AD Terry Holland had oh-so-generously offered to play the game in Greenville as Ike, et al approached the coast (what a guy, huh?) and Tulane oh-so-obviously declined the invite.
Instead, the Green Wave took the Pirates down to the fourth quarter, with Petey's Pirates needing an interception --> last minute Patrick Pinkney touchdown to put away what might be a pretty underrated Tulane squad. My brother claims the Pirates were injured and Tulane is in fact better than we think, but it could also be that ECU overlooked them. Or isn't as good as we thought. Or got handed a freebie when Tyrod Taylor didn't play them the first week.
Taylor is playing now and he led Virginia Tech to an unranked matchup of the two favorites to win the Coastal Division in the ACC. Which is kind of like a race to senility between Brent Musberger and Lee Corso; amusing, yet painful to watch. Things happened, people did stuff, THERE WAS BEAMER BALL and eventually Paul Johnson kind of messed the bed in the end as the Northern-most Technical University involved in the game won.
Bob Griese is a homer, the Purdue kicker choked, Oregon was excellent on special teams, LeGarrette Blount was LeDominant and Curtis Painter managed exactly ZERO touchdowns in 50 attempts. Also, Kory Sheets looked good. But not good enough.

The author of this column saying the ACC is horrible must qualify that statement. The ACC just had the last place team in the conference whip Navy, Maryland beat powerhouse Cal, and UNC killed a Rutgers team that has been ranked for a couple of years. If the ACC is horrible then the author has then qualified the PAC 10, the Big East, and Navy as worse than horrible. I would say the opinion is based on the 1st week results of the conference only, and these latest wins would show he is incorrect in his assumption.

Thank You!!!! I am so glad that u stood up for the ACC. I am getting sick of hearing how "horrible" the ACC is. They have a bad opening weekend and all of a sudden they are the worst thing ever. They were still 7-4 their opening weekend. They are now 17-8 against nonconference teams. Surely they are not the worst BCS conference (Big East) or even the 2nd worst BCS conference (Big Ten or Big 12).

Wow, no mention of Auburn squeaking by Miss St. 3-2. Thats a top ten team. If the Pirates "arent as good as we thought" then surely Auburn deserved a little scorn for winning with a baseball score. There were a lot of teams in the 8-18 ranking that just did get by this week. If ECU had not had the turnovers that they coughed up, they win this game handily. But, turnovers are part of the game and ECU's sloppiness kept Tulane in the game/lead. This Tulane team should have beaten Alabama @ Alabama week one. They are a lot better than people give them credit for.

I was at the USC-Ga game.
South Carolina would have beaten Georgia if not for a fumble and then an interception at the goal line. USC was the better team, and if they can learn to play with less mistakes they will be a force on the national scene. I expect them to upset at least one heavyweight on their schedule - maybe Fla or Tenn.

I am so excited for the Husker/Hokie game I can't stand it. Every team sets up the "cupcake games" at the beginning of the season and NOW the Hokies will be in Lincoln to stand the test of Bo. Y'all have to be excited about this game. Yes? The only thing missing is a "Vick" but surely it will provide everything we love in NCAA football. Prejudiced as I am...GO HUSKERS!!!
