After transferring from the banana republic that is Arkansas football to the Shangri-La that is USC, it was expected that Mitch Mustain would seriously challenge to become the next quarterback at USC. NCAA rules forced him into a year on the practice squad where he appeared all but even with Mark Sanchez in the battle to replace John David Booty this year. That's all changed. Sanchez was named the starter after the spring, but the gap was seemingly narrow between the competitors. Sanchez then dislocated his kneecap in a freak injury, creating the most golden of golden opportunities for Mustain to take the job and possibly never look back. Handed the world, Mustain appears to have balked, badly. Says longtime USC reporter Steve Bisheff, formerly of the Orange County Register:
[I]nstead of being aggressive and taking control, he seemed to back off, appearing tentative and unsure of himself. In the first of three scheduled preseason scrimmages at the Coliseum, Mustain was outplayed by Aaron Corp, the redshirt freshman who had been the star of the spring game. Some said it was because Corp was playing with the first-team offense for most of the scrimmage and that things would change in the second scrimmage.Except that wasn't really the case. Most observers rated Mustain and Corp even in scrimmage No. 2, although some felt Corp had come out slightly ahead again.
Carroll hasn't said anything officially, but in practices this week, Corp, the more mobile of the two, has appeared with the first-team offense more often than Mustain. That is not a good sign for the Arkansas transfer.
Clearly. Sanchez has recovered remarkably fast and may be ready in time for the Virginia game, but he's now a marked man making it important for USC to determine his backup. Many observers at this point think USC may just settle for athletic but inexperienced redshirt freshman Corp. So much for Mustain's 8-0 record in SEC play!
With the expected arrival of No. 1 quarterback recruit Matt Barkley next year, things are looking bleak for Mustain if he can't even hold on to the No. 2 job. Heading to USC was a good choice for Mustain, away from a bad situation and onto a good and stable team. Unfortunately something appears to have gone horribly wrong in the process.

If a truck comes and takes out Sanchez and Corp then look for a homeless man to play quarterback. If you can't find one then play Mustain, otherwise make him sit that is what he deserves.

What did USC expect. At Arkansas 8-0 because of McFadden. He is a spoiled boy that had to have his mommy stand up for him. It was all about him not was that was best for the TEAM. If he was a man he would had stayed at Arkansas and waited his time for fame. With McFadden, Arkansas was going to be a running team. A man would had realized that and why in the world would USC even had wanted him after all the trouble he and his mother caused in Arkansas. He sat out a season for what? He should has stayed in Arkansas and would most likely be starter this year. Thought he was too good to play for his home state, how sad. He lost all respect from the Arkansas fans for not wanting what was best for the team. I hope he is proud of himself along with his mommy. The best thing for Arkansas is that he left.

I am a UA fan. Mustain has a lot of respect among the Hog faithful and only the dullest of the dull have hard feelings toward Beck Campbell for having a meeting with the AD to discuss tutoring, that's right tutoring! Not football or offensive philosophy as the painfully uninformed believe.
I have followed the qb battle pretty closely at SC. Corp's #s in the last scrimmage stunk! 4 yds per pass attempt, with an interception and no td's stinks!
To say that he was even with Mustain who threw for a TD and twice as many yards while leading a total of 3 scoring drives to Corp's 1 is homerish. Since when is that even?
Corp has been getting the majority of the work with the first team most of the fall, yet most don't believe he's won the job.
I think most of you are wearing Orange colored glasses about the current qb battle.
I also think that the only reason that a starter hasn't been named is because of the realistic chance that Sanchez could be back and that naming a starter and then Unnaming him, would be a distraction.

Jamie, I am an Arkansas fan as well, and I can tell you that just as many Hog fans think Mitch Mustain is a cry baby and a mama's boy as those who think he is "God's gift" to the football world; and, I've said many times that Mitch will never see meaningful pt at USC without a slew of injuries taking out Sanchez and Corp. I still believe that. The reasons are many, but mainly because he is STILL making horrible decisions on who to throw to and when to throw it. He throws ints with precision and consistency, and unless that changes he will never be the starter without those injuries I mentioned above.

Jamie, I am an Arkansas fan as well, and I've got to respond to you. There are as many Hog fans who think Mitch Mustain is a cry baby and mama's boy as there are who think he is "God's gift" to the football world.
I have said many times, and still believe, that he will never get any meaningful pt at USC unless every other QB wearing a Trojan uniform is injured.
Mitch has a great arm, but great arms don't define whether a kid turns into a great QB. The number one factor in determining a great QB is the decisions he makes on the field when under pressure, along with his leadership capabilities. Mitch is STILL making horrible decisions on the field by throwing into double and triple coverage. He throws interceptions with precision and consistency, and I see and read nothing that makes me think he will be changing this habitg any time soon.
And for the record, he and his mom did NOT go into the AD's office to discuss tutoring. That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read about this particular incident! His mom went in with a number of other parents to DISCUSS TUTORING??? LOL! They went in to pressure Frank Broyles into forcing Houston Nutt to change the offense so their precious children would catch more passes than they were catching in a McFadden/Jones run-oriented offense. I'm not defending Houston Nutt in this because I believe the offense should have been more balanced; however, to claim the meeting was for turoring is either naive on your part, or purposefully misleading.
I don't usually get involved in these types of discussions, but I could not allow your comments to go unchallenged.

Paul, Once again get your facts straight, Frank Broyles himself was quoted in Dallas Texas about the Incident you speak, Frank said playing Time was never mentioned.
Mustain is a good kid with lot's of potential and since your latest post has been moved to number 2 at USC.

Mitch was allowed to QB an SEC team as a freshman, with two of the best running backs in the country. Despite his 9 interceptions, McFadden and Jones got the team into the 10 yard line for Mitch to throw some touchdowns. His attitude was bad on the field and in Fayetteville. His Mother admitted discussing her complimentary Stadium Seat location, and offensive stategy to the AD. It was like Little Leage.
Mitch Mustain hurt the team when he left. He was so full of hate he filed a Freedom of Information act request to see the cell phone activity of Coach Nutt. Mitch didn't realize that FOI request become available under the FOI act. He request copies to be sent to his mother's address in Spirngdale, AR. The records proved nothing.
Nutt received a bonus for staying at Arkansas that year. McFadden and Jones got big paydays to go pro after 3 years. Nutt even got more money to go to Ole Miss. And Mitch Mustain ran the scout team for a year. Now he is 3rd string to an injured Sanchez, and a Freshman Corp.
The only bad thing about High School hipe, is that some players belive it.

I remember seeing the whole springdale mafia play in high school i didn't see it. First of all remember there were 5000 students a Springdale high school They just had more numbers to pick from and the best player they had was the kicker who is at Arkansas now.
Mustain could throw till he had pressure and then he shut down just like this article talks about . He never had to work through adversity and i think his High school coach who is now at Tulsa and his mother made a big mistake fighting his fights for him.
A quarterback must fight and get his team to fight back when times are tough. Remember this is not a punt pass and kick contest.
That being said i hope for his sake he get tough and learn to be a football player and mom if your reading quit reading his emails and complaining to the coaches , let your son fight his own battles. Its not to late to let him grow up , if you don't , you might want to get his room ready , cause he will be coming home.

Mitch Mustain is not all that. If my college baseball coach had to deal with a mother he would have went off like the coach at Colorado. This is college. Save the mother b.s. for little league. Actually, keep it out of little league, too. They start this crap way too early. Now Southern Cal is seeing the mistakes he made at Ark. Casey Dick isn't a great quarterback, but i backed the decisions that Houston Nutt made back then. Have a nice day.

I am an Arkansan living in Memphis, Tn. i don't know what went wrong at Arkansas with Mitch Mustain, All i know is the kid did a pretty good job for us as a freshman. Now what is being said about Mitch being unable to deal with pressure I don't know about that. He came in late to play quarterback when we played SC, which i think a lot of SC fans saw him play in there stadium, he had a lot of pressure put on him there, his first college game at quarterback, it maybe just me, but i thought the kid did a pretty good job against SC defense, they were all over him and he made some good passes. So i don't think his problem is pressured. as for all the stuff that went on in Fayetteville i don't know of any of it except what has been rumored, and i don't know who is at fault, so i will not comment on that part. I do believe he would have helped us last year, but i don't blame the kid for leaving, nutt benched him and was not going to let him play. I do believe his passing some helped DMAC, JONES AND HILLIS OUT, for opponents didn't know for sure if we were going to pass or run. I just wish the kid the best and hope he can get himself straightened out. i think he does have potential to be a good quarterback.

The LA Times and OC Register newspapers did a good job of covering and reporting on the scrimmages and practices that USC had in the spring and fall. Obviously a big focus was on the battle for QB. After keeping up with the articles, it sounded like Mitch had flashes of brilliance, but also flashes of idiocy, as a previous poster mentioned, throwing into double coverage, making unwise decisions, some interceptions etc. Aaron Corp the other back-up QB had flashes of good too, but maybe wasn't as spectacular, yet steady and made fewer bad reads and decisions. I suspect that Mitch is having a little trouble getting adapted to a new offensive system, as well as playing against a level of defensive talent that he's not used to. It's taking him a while to climb the learning curve. Obviously with Sanchez only a junior, Corp a redshirt freshman, and Barkley coming in next year (who SC will have to redshirt), it's a little crowded.
Grading out the QBs, Sanchez is an A, Corp a B, Mustain a B-. Sanchez is well above the other two, who are neck in neck with each other, but Corp is slightly ahead right now. I tend to think that Sanchez is a lock this year and next, but for the backups, with so much time left in this season and their careers, the situation between them is still fluid. If Corp or Mustain are ever pressed into active duty because of a Sanchez injury, the coaching staff will adjust the play calling to compensate for them. I think all three of them are solid and given SC's talent level, should be able to guide them to victory.

the biggest problem with mitch was that he played as a freshman
he redshirts for a year, with gus starting the thin end of the wedge of offensive change, and 07 would have been his year to shine
instead the coach and ad let control and leadership of the team slip away to please a few big donors.... and STILL did not please them
lmmfao
hope mitch does well, and damian, and ben, and tejada
