This would be the most insane player dismissal ever if Jarboe hadn't gotten expelled from his high school and charged with a felony for bringing a gun to school. Still, the Wizard of Odds notes that Bob Stoops was of one mind Thursday...
"Kick a guy off the team for what he says?" Stoops said. The whole Internet culture frustrates Stoops. "We're starting to talk about everything kids say and do," Stoops said. "Now we're in people's homes, in their private spaces."...before he was of the opposite mind a couple days later. What happened?
Nothing, really, except public pressure. The only thing that transpired from Friday to Saturday was the further spread of the video online and local sports columnist clucking.
Berry Tramel, last seen looking drunk at 10AM and comparing message boards to Hitler or something, wrote that "Jarboe's jabbering about shooting people shows that he is undeserving of an Oklahoma scholarship," further blathering about youth culture before striking on what's very likely a false statement:
Except that Oklahoma center Ben Habern appears in the video and has got to be "habe35," a youtube user that had posted two things to the site: the rap and a highlight film of Ben Habern. Jarboe very likely had nothing to do with posting the video, and is guilty only of screwing around with friends who are incautious.
Meanwhile, fellow Okahoman knob John Rohde is offering a "standing ovation" for the dismissal, wondering if Stoops wife 'whispered in her husband's ear, "Would you want our children going to the same school as a Josh Jarboe?"' He further insists that Jarboe's high school coach has no idea what kind of kid he is, at least not as well as Some Knob At The Oklahoman does.
That coach is the only one talking something resembling sense in this situation:
"My players rap," Bonner said. "It's a cultural thing."
Bonner pointed to rap artist and Atlanta native Ludacris, whose new song "Politics as Usual" made headlines this week because of disparaging lyrics against political leaders.
"Ludacris can say whatever he wants to say, he doesn't care and he's a man," Bonner said. "To Josh, he (thinks he) didn't do anything (wrong) because he wants to be a rapper.
Jarboe said things that are completely typical of a genre of music. He smiled as he did it; he wasn't angry or threatening. He was just a kid screwing around. No one was hurt. Jarboe didn't do anything wrong unless you're the sort of writer who just loves it when poor, unwise black 17-year-olds make bad decisions so you can get on your high horse and write thunder from your perch at a newspaper.

i cant speak for bob stoops but when it was reported last week he was playing golf at somekind of coaches event. maybe he hadnt seen the video when asked the 1st time about it who knows. what i do know is oklahoma doesnt need thugs on its team. im still disappointed stoops didnt boot the idiot that stole a 50 dollar jacket from burlington coat factory before the fiesta bowl laydown. he shouldve been sent home. an athlete is offered a scholarship as compensation for his possible services on the football program. what i would rather see is the scholarship offered to an athlete that isnt a so called 5 star player but to someone who will 1st use it to get an education and second use it to have an opportunity to play and possibly move to the next level. now as far as this thug what concerns me is why did ou offer him a scholaship if he already had a criminal past as this kid in taking a gun to school. kudos to stoops for sending the kid home and hopefully we can keep our program thug free.

You seem to enjoy labeling kids and calling them names. You should use the same respect that you want the athletes to show.
The rap was for entertainment.
Should someone call you an uneducated fool because you don't know how to use capital letters? Or should we give you benefit of the doubt and assume you understand that first grade skill?
You could have expressed the same views without trying to label the young man.

lb sorry you seem to need capital letters to comprehend the same words. yes i could use "proper" sentence structures if i wished but this isnt an english 101 class here. when i was in high school any male who took typing was usually the guy you least wanted in your physical education class especially shower time. in other words meat gazers so i took the male dominated courses like metal, wood, and auto shop and drafting. typing and home economics werent on my agenda as courses i wouldve been interested in so all i can tell you is if you dont like my posts then as they say in moscow "tough schitzsky" dont read them. i guess typing was at the top of your choices among other things.
now as far as labeling these kids all i can tell you is their actions speak volumes about the type of person they really are. i know you think rap is entertainment which is hilarious. i guess you think "cop killer" is ok. you and brian seem to think that this kid was "just having fun" with the video and crap he spouted so i guess you also believe michael vick was having fun as well. when rae carruth had his pregnant girlfriend murdered he was "just having fun" himself. its really pathetic lb that you seem to think this kids actions are ok. you are a fine example as to why this great nation is falling fast. i dont know maybe you want to sniff this kids used jock or something but anyone with anykind of common sense knows this type of behaviour is unacceptable period. i know its tough for these kids. i mean basically an all expense free trip and education from a major university and all that is asked of these athletes is that they keep their noses clean for 4 years and not be a burden on society at the universities expense. jeez i dont know how anyone can make it these days playing ball at these universities. so much to ask for a free education and an opportunity to start out life on top.

Utterly ridiculous.
I would feel very stupid if I was this guy losing a scholarship and probably my only chance to do something with my life just because I recorded myself rapping one of the crappiest raps I ever heard and to top it off, I could hardly understand what he was saying.
It's insane to me that people would even consider that entertainment! This is exactly why I don't like to watch MTV or VH1 anymore. All it is now is lame reality shows and rap videos that are constantly getting bleeped over. What the hell do people get out of watching that crap anyway!
These kids need to understand that there are millions of other people out there that wish they had the athletic talent to get them into a higher school of learning to give themselves a chance to earn a degree first and maybe be able to improve their athletic talent enough to display their skills at the professional level.
I am scrambling to save money and hope that my 10 year old son will be able to go to college when he graduates in eight years and then these people are wasting their opportunities.
WAKE UP PEOPLE! You're blowing it!

One of the stupidest overreactions I've heard of on the part of everyone, it seems, in the state of Oklahoma. Ridiculous. Hopefully, this kid lands on his feet somewhere since the administration at OU saw fit to inappropriately, imo, take this opportunity away from him.
cfb expert, you can't possibly be comparing him to Rae Carruth and Michael Vick, can you? It's apparent that you have a particular agenda. I suppose anyone who repeats the lyrics to a rap that has the "OMG F WORD" or mentions a firearm or the "OMG N WORD" deserves to be kicked out of school, right? Is there an "ignore" function for the comments section?

Jarboe got a raw deal? Sounds more like society got a raw deal when this gun-toting thug was sentenced to no jail time. Maybe if he hadn't brought an illegal, loaded firearm to school he wouldn't have lost his scholarship for rapping about guns and putting people in comas. If Jarboe really wants an education he can do what most other college kids do and take out student loans.

So at Iowa you can (in all likelyhood) sexually assault a women and the coach and Administration will not only look the other way, but actively help you coverup the crime.
At OU you can make a silly rap song and you lose your scholarship.
Awesome. Glad everyone has their priorities in order.

georgiablue what we need isnt an ignore button but in fact an i.q. test before an illiterate like yourself is allowed to post a comment. if you cant figure it out dumbass out of the 6 people (myself included) that have posted a response you and lb are in the minority with your thoughts. im not sure but maybe at the joke that is called georgia football this type of conduct is allowed but at oklahoma it isnt. im sure if stoops had did nothing and allowed this kid to stay then you wouldve been the 1st hypocrit to run your man pleaser about how its the same oklahoma. win at all cost right? so it was a no winner for stoops no matter what his decision was but being the inbred toothless hick that you are you probably lack the comon sense to realize it. i still remember vividly t. boone pickens comments to the espn reporter as oklahoma st was defeating alabama in the bowl game after the 2006 season in which pickens told the reporter the best thing about ok st football this year is the fact that they had 0 players in trouble with the law. why did he make those comments? he made those comments because from the day les miles left ok st until mike gundys 1st game as head coach ok st had booted 11 players off its team. 9 of which were starters. it seemed les miles didnt mind the football players terrorizing the streets of stillwater. one of the players prentice elliot was a thug in high school like this jarboe kid. after the ou loss he beat his girlfriend, had assaulted a police officer while in high school. guess where prentice elliot is now? prison. it wont be long before this jarboe kid is his cell mate. now with that being said if you want to continue to suck this kids nuts then i suggest you run to mark richt and the athletic director and beg them to take your hero on the team. let this thug be georgias problem not oklahomas.

You guys have go to be kidding me. By you guys, im referring to the Al Sharpton-esque idiots that are really comparing this man to Mike Vick. He's doing a rap for gods sake. I am a 19 year old white kid who attends college and totes a 3.7gpa, and i've done crappy freestyles about shooting people and bangin girls. Do you honestly think rappers do all the things they talk about in these songs?? If he actually acted on these actions, yeah then kick him out, but i seem to recall that famous Malcom Kelly freestyle, where he talks about sippin codeine(Purple Drank, for the uninformed). Well, why wasnt he kicked off for illegally using prescription medicines that i doubt he got prescribed to him for an alcoholic beverage? Jarboe was just having fun. Freestyling is a hobby, and if thats how he wants to kill time, so be it. What do you want him to rap about, puppies and candycanes?
And as for you cfb, good god you make me sick. The first thing these student athletes should worry about is their education? Really?? Do you know what the life of a college football player is like? I do because I room with one, he goes to class for 2 and a half hours tops, and the rest of his day is spent on football. So tell me, is the university really promoting an education first policy? The main goal of these kids is to make their respective team successful, especially if its football or basketball, which will increase revenue. If they want to pursue their academic interests, a la Myron Rolle and the countless others, god bless them. But don't for one second think that academics is first on the agenda of either the players or the coaches. And the fact that you can even think about considering the possibility that it is plausible to compare Josh Jarboe Mike fricken Vick and Ray motherhumping Caruth is absolutely insane. Both of those 2 are convicted felons that did unspeakable crimes. Josh Jarboe made a effin freestyle. Wake up and smell the coffee brother.

Reason- You 'tote' a 3.7 gpa and fail to see the bigger picture in this whole situation? Please march down to your schools' bursars office and demand your money back. Jarboe wasn't thrown off the team just because of a rap. The rap was just the final straw after being given a second chance following the gun charge. BTW, Jarboe should be a felon but a weak-willed judge dropped the felony gun and receiving stolen property charges to midemeanors.

reason its great you "tote" a 3.7 gpa. it proves what a joke our universities have become. imagine carrying a supposed 3.7 gpa yet too illiterate to comprehend rational thought. now i dont know what university you supposedly attend but if it is ou then you need to get educated. 1972 ou gets probation for what, reason? oh yes it was from someone (h.s. principal who took the blame) changing kerry jacksons grades on his transcript so he could be eligible to attend ou. ou suffered 3 year probation with a 2 year ban on t.v. games. that cost the university millions oh by the way. the university loses millions so they can hand out a gift scholarship to someone who didnt make the grades yet you claim no one cares. the ncaa cared. try thinking again. right now i remember an ohio st football player who was big 10 freshman of the year who quit the team because he claimed ohio st coach john cooper didnt care about academics only winning football games which didnt set well with him since he was a pre-med major. he left the team and stayed at ohio st on a track scholarship and later played in the nfl for the vikings. robert smith i believe is the kid i am speaking about so all i can tell you is maybe your roommate isnt interested in an education but alot of athletes are.
now all i can tell you and for anyone else that thinks that rapping about drive by shootings is great is to go find someone who has lost a brother child or parent to a drive by and rap for them. you might want a good dental plan before you do though. i guess at 22 or younger since you claim to be in college you are still too immature to be able to grasp the sensitive nature and pain millions of victims have went through by losing a loved one to a senseless drive by shooting but you seem to think its happening, its bitchin right? what you need lil man is to have an m-16 strapped to your back like i did or have a friend next to you get his head blown off then we will see if you think rapping about drive bys and shooting people is all that great. maybe if you are lucky you can lose a loved one to a drive by since you seem to condone it. now get sick on that.

Wow, people. CFB, come on man. Are you really getting this angry at people's responses to your posts that you resort to things such as personally attacking them? Do we need a resume section to post here so people will not be assailed? I think the point many posters are trying to make is that, on its face, booting a kid for this transgression seems a bit harsh. Did he bring a gun to school when he was in high school? Apparently so. Does that make this look worse? Yes. Did he, himself, post this on the internet? It appears not. Is he in a pretty bad situation now? Yes, I would say so. Does it seem like it was just a kid rapping about stupid stuff and it got posted on the internet by one of his friends and set off a storm? To this outside impartial observer, it does. I have no irons in this fire- I have no problem with OU whatsoever, and no rooting interest in the Big XII in general. I think that what people are saying is that it just seems a little...harsh to yank a kid's scholarship for this, even given his past. I think that's all anyone is trying to say; no reason for everyone to get so angry about it.

You guys really dont believe in second chances do you? The kid made a mistake, and by all accounts has done nothing wrong since then. Is rapping really the final nail in the coffin? Seriously? Again, if he acted on any of these lines, by all means kick him off. But all he did was talk, and Stoops said it himself when he said (as quoted in the article): Kick a guy off the team for what he says?" Stoops said. The whole Internet culture frustrates Stoops. "We're starting to talk about everything kids say and do," Stoops said. "Now we're in people's homes, in their private spaces."
Now for you cfb...i mean where do i start?
Regarding my university, I attend the University of Florida. It's not Harvard, but its a damn good school, rated in the top 50 in the country. Go ahead, look it up, its called research...
OU fudging academic transcrips has NOTHING to do with the topic, because it has nothing to do with a student athlete. That involves a player who hasn't even made it to campus. Not to mention it was in 19-goddamn-72 and things are completely different 36 years later. Robert Smith quit the team, true. Do you want me to name the other 70 players on that same team who didnt quit? Please stop acting like you know whats going on, you don't. I do because i see it first hand. Do you really think Darren McFadden put more time into his college algebra test then he did studying film vs LSU? My point wasn't that academics isn't worth while and these kids shouldn't even try. My point was these kids, whether you like it or not, are mostly there for athletics first. Do many, many, many of them do in fact excel academically and go on to great things? Of course they do, and absolutely nooone is disputing that. But in an article i read about Myron Rolle, possible the best example of a student athlete, FSU coaches were actually discouraged by the fact that he studied more for tests then he did for games. And this is regarding a Rhodes Scholar! Now cfb, if for one second you could take your head out your ass and stop comparing apples to oranges, there is no way to say that OU didn't over-react to this. And as far as your hissy fit about rap, i dont even know why you mentiond the m-16(i assume a military reference?) but i dont even care. Rap is just a genre of music where people say things soley for entertainment. 99% of these guys dont act on what they say, but id be willing to be you that wayyyyy more of them have "lost loved ones to senseless drive by shootings" then you or anyone else you know. And why the hell would you even mention that??? Heres a suggestion: Please, pretty please, with sugar on top, get of your high horse and quit acting like you have the slightest bit of knowlege of what goes on with young people these days, because you obviously don't. And if you want to comment, try not to sound like a jackass.

cfb expert,
It's nice that your response to criticisms is a personal attack. On the other hand, you still have not laid out a single cogent thought in any of your diatribes (although my head does hurt from trying to read them - paragraph breaks are your friends).
As for Jarboe, he was sentenced to 80 hours of community service for a misdemeanor, which is appropriate for a first offense. It seems OU instituted some sort of zero-tolerance policy with Jarboe, which also seems appropriate at first glance. However, what really matters is how the policy is administered. In this case, I feel that the administration overreacted. The question is what disciplinary action would have been taken had it been any other player in that video. Imagine the player is a white farmboy from Nebraska who had been busted for getting into a brawl in high school. Would he have been under the same zero-tolerance policy and faced the same penalty? Or is it different because Jarboe is a "thug" from the ghetto?
I am all for personal responsibility on the part of the players. There are too many who make foolish decisions - whether it be a DUI, assault, or other criminal behavior - and need to pay the consequences. The question I am posing is whether the punishment fits the crime. I don't believe it does. I believe it to be a gross overreaction.
Of course, I'm sure my comments will only elicit more "dumbass hick" comments from the peanut in the gallery.

reason lets see if it at all possible without divine intervention that you be able to comprehend the situation. 1st attacking someone personally. i didnt know who the hell you were until you posted the 11th comment and it refers to me so in case you cant figure it out you attacked 1st. my original response attacked no one other than the author who acted like stoops was pressured into the dismissal when in fact that might not be correct as he wasnt in norman when informed of the video and 2nd i called someone who makes rap videos about drive bys and has had a criminal charge of carrying a handgun to school a thug. what should have i called him an alter boy?
now you claim to know everything especially at florida so i guess you know about the players saying they were afraid to be around the kid because all he talked about 24/7 was killing and shooting someone? i guess your so called 3.7 gpa you "tote" isnt quite high enough to figure out the kid has issues. SERIOUS ISSUES. i guess since florida who has had what 9 players arrested the last year and a half would be a great fit for this kid. lets all hope he enrolls or transfers whatever his situation is at florida.
now one last comment. i know the youth and you are a perfect example of it reason. 19, know it all, did it all, when in reality you are still wet behind the ears. you need your diaper changed. ive served in 3 different nations (germany, france, and spain) while your daddy was a pimply faced geek jacking you off on toilet paper nightly. you know nothing and are an absolute total fool period. 19 and gonna educate me all about the world when you havent been around the block. talk about a joke. its like the old sign that read "hire a teenager while they still know everything".

georgia im not going to hammer you just let me present these facts about racism and stoops so we can end the discussion about it once and for all. 1st a thug is a thug no matter what race. white, black, latino, asian, native american etc it doesnt matter. now here are the players i remember in trouble at ou and im sure i have forgot a couple.
hunter wall a white qb arrested with 1 ounce of dope in his pocket as he tried to rob a house. sent packing as he shouldve been.
brent ralls wasnt dismissed by stoops just informed no matter his talent he would be the 4th team qb due to alcohol problems. he was injured then in another incident about a week before his return he fell out of a pickup truck bed (probably drunk). he transferred to la tech where he was booted there i believe. he is white.
brandon everage busted for marijuana possession and was suspended for the 1st game of the 2003 season. the 2nd week the team bus had to wait for coaches to bail him out for a dui for about an hour before they left for alabama. he was punished by missing the 1st half of that game. he is black.
dusty dvorcek white kicked off the team for a fight with a former best friend that left the guy in a coma. immediately booted even though no charges were filed. he was allowed after anger management classes to appeal to the ncaa for re instatement which was granted his sr year in 2005.
rhett bomar white booted off the team for taking payments from a booster.
j.d. quinn white booted from the team for taking payments from a booster. the 3rd player charged was a walk on and im not sure of his race so i wont speculate.
now stoops didnt have to boot bomar who was the starting qb. ohio st had a similar situation with troy smith and troy smith ended up winning a heisman. stoops personally chose to kick the players off. it wasnt mandatory by the ncaa.
last year before the bowl game im not sure if it was gerald mccoy or demarcus granger (i apologize to the innocent person. i get them confused. both dts) both black that tried to steal a coat and his punishment was missing the game. so when you look at booted players stoops has booted more white players than black. so that should end the racial discussion some people want to make it.
one last comment to you georgia. my favorite basketball player jenna plumley was kicked off the team for trying to steal make up. she was allowed to keep her scholarship but she wont be playing basketball again for ou. that is the type of policies that ou coaches have. its called the ncaa which is down oklahomas back everytime they pass gas. kill the football program and that takes away 50-100 million in revenue for the team. im sure stoops would love to overlook some situations and has when he could but oklahoma university cant overlook anything due to the biased hatred of some who work for the ncaa i.e. paul dee. the standards are different for ou by the ncaa.

I'm glad you listed all those transgressions that resulted in getting booted from the team. All criminal activity. Now compare that to a video posted on the internet in which no criminal activity took part. See the difference?
I don't care that he had an issue in high school. If Oklahoma is looking to be consistent, why recruit the kid at all?

jon it alarms me you dont mind this kid had issues in high school. hes out of high school and the video is what about a week old? looks like to me he still has serious issues. i just thank god he didnt do any drive bys in the week or so he was in norman. in my post #1 i asked the same question as to why ou wouldve even bothered to offer this kid an opportunity not only on the football field but at the university itself.
do you remember or know who lamar thomas is? he played at miami and is best noted as being the wr that alabama db george teague ran down and took the ball away on what looked like a sure td for miami in the 1992 national title game. he was doing football broadcasts for some small network on the east coast and was covering the miami-fiu game in which they had a brawl. he stated basically "this is our house, no one comes in here talking trash. im so fired up im thinking of going down on the field and getting me some". remember that? he was fired. what criminal activity did he do? nothing. he was fired because his comments were seen as unacceptable from his employer. same thing with this kid. the university found his comments and video unacceptable behaviour and basically fired the kid.
as far as 2nd chances i dont believe that way. i believe you are blessed with 1 opportunity in life so dont screw it up. what has this kid did to earn a 2nd chance? blowing his 1st chance? let the kid do some community service for victims of drive bys or something positive for the community and prove he isnt the person he tries to portray on the video. hopefully this kid will get his life straight and realize in life you are accountable for your actions and be a better person by it. if and/or when he does this then i will be in his corner saying he deserves a 2nd chance.
