Poor Oklahoma. They had an unsigned agreement to have Middle Tennessee State come to Norman for a guarantee game, but instead MTSU took a better offer. The Blue Raiders got a home-and-home with Mississippi State -- the first time an SEC team will play MTSU on the road. Mississippi State agreed to this only because Central Michigan reneged on its visit to Starkville.Since MTSU pulled out late, Oklahoma was forced to scramble and could only find 1-AA Tennessee-Chattanooga to fill the gap. Something that pissed off Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione when people then questioned why Oklahoma would play such a game.
Several factors go into making a schedule work, including corresponding dates, availability and the exorbitant amount of money BCS powers like OU are forced to pay I-A teams to play in Norman.Yes, the opportunity to travel for a road beating with no reciprocal game. Of course, those same BCS teams helped create the market that they then decry. The BCS schools were happy to support the addition of the 12th game that increased the demand. They seek only guarantee home games whenever possible and only against teams they can handle. They happily poach opponents with the increased bids.
"Let's face it," Castiglione said. "There are some (I-A) schools that just don't want to play you regardless of the opportunity or the offer."
Ohio State, for example, will pay Navy $1.4 million for a single game in 2009.
Ohio State's Gene Smith calls the Navy payout a "special situation" and says he doesn't plan to pay that much at least until after 2014 because his schedule is set till then. The Navy payout came because another school pulled out of a contract with Ohio State, leaving the Buckeyes with a hole in their schedule. But Navy had to buy its way out of a contract in order to come. Ohio State's guarantee will in effect cover Navy's buyout as well.
In other words Ohio State got "jammed" by one school on their schedule, so they "jammed" another school to buy Navy.
It's hard to feel too much sympathy for Oklahoma, or any of the BCS schools that "have" to pay huge money for the guarantee games. It's the one time the non-BCS teams actually have any leverage and a position of strength over the BCS schools. Too many of the BCS schools want the extra home games rather than schedule more home-and-home series or even a few two-for-one series. Plus, if the BCS schools still weren't turning a profit on the guarantee games, they wouldn't keep paying the rising prices.

I believe that Navy series is a home and home (well, home and neutral site, anyway)

Dear Mr. Rich
Perhaps The AD director at Oklahoma has a right to be displeased with tne scheduling glich. Perhaps he will also be upset for the language that you use to describe his reaction?

Amen. Mr. Rich.

Offer a home and home deal and teams will
play you. These teams will be even less likely in coming years to agree to the million dollar payouts knowing that they can get a home game against them.
You play to win, in scheduling just as much as in the game.

its a shame that the ncaa doesnt make 1a teams play each other and allows them to run to the 1aa level. i dont understand the need for any classification if the ncaa allows it. why not make those 1aa teams 1a since the sec seems to run to schedule them to pad their records. now for Tim. 2004 ou faced a similar situation. when arkansas st backed out of a gamed in norman it left ou with 2 games to fill. ou had 4 home games and wants 6 so ou offered southern california, lsu, miami, w. virginia, virginia, syracuse, pitt, and north carolina games. lsu had just defeated ou in the sugar but lacked the balls to travel to norman in 2004 and wait for ou to travel to baton rouge in 2005. instead lsu like in typical sec style ran to the 1aa level. southern california who was scheduled to have 4 home games in 2005 declined traveling to norman in 2004 then wait for ou to return to la in 2005. southern cal also backed out of a 2001 game in norman as well so ou scheduled tulsa. also in that same season of 2001 ou had a game in norman (hispanic game i believe) in which ariz st was supposed to travel to norman but backed out at the last moment so ou played n. carolina to start the 2001 season. for about 8 months everyone knew ou was looking to find an opponent but as you see only n carolina had the balls to play the defending national champion at its home. now back to 2004 offers. when southern cal declined the home and home for 04-05 Oregon called ou and stated they would be willing to travel to norman in 04 if ou would travel to eugene somewhere between 2006-2008 thus the ou-oregon game in 2006 came about. the other 2004 home game ou needed came from bowling green. as you can see it isnt ou that lacks the balls to travel anywhere anytime. teams realize ou is 54-2 in norman under stoops so traveling to norman is almost a guaranteed loss. also Tim 1999 when stoops arrived at ou and ou needed to fill a game ou called notre dame and TRAVELED to south bend to play with no return game. once again it isnt ou that lacks the balls to schedule and play home and homes with any 1a programs. after the 2005 ucla game and the 2006 oregon game in which the refs determined the outcome i actually feared ou was going to back out of their 1st game ever in the 35 years i have followed college football by not traveling to washington unless the refs were neutral. i am glad to see ou will be playing washington this year in washington. so again TIM your comment about schedule home and homes and teams will play you is quite bogus.
