There's nothing like your tight ends coach
guaranteeing a successful season:
"I guarantee you (Irish fans) that you won't be disappointed this season. Mark it down, we're on a mission," Bernie Parmalee, tight ends coach, told members of the Notre Dame Club of Northwest Indiana in St. Patrick's church hall.
And by god, the Notre Dame tight ends are going to be wholly responsible for it! So many questions:
- Notre Dame seriously has a coach who just does tight ends?
- Notre Dame seriously has a coach who guarantees Notre Dame fans, who have been disappointed every year since 1993, that they will not be disappointed this year?
- ...and this guy is the uber-responsible-for-all-accomplishments tight ends coach?
- Notre Dame seriously has a coach who claims the team is on a mission and doesn't reflexively insert "... from God" afterwards?
- Bernie Parmalee?
Answers: uh... yup... weird, uh... evidently, seriously, uh... disapointingly, and yeah, weird.

I also liked the following from the newspaper article you link: "Our lines are moving people and the defense will fly around" under new defensive coordinator Corwin Brown from Georgia Tech."
I'm not sure if it's the newspaper reporter and/or Notre Dame itself which is confused.

They also have a Head Coach that cheated his way into the job via his Spygate generated "offensive genius" reputation. The joke is on Notre Dame. The AD is leaving for the Duke job . How do you respect a program that enables a cheater ?

Steve, you respect a program that graduates 97% of its student athlete's. No proof about the Coach has ever come out, just speculation. What fan of which team are you, probably USC.

How could you leave out the fact that Notre Dame also just graduated John Carlson, the best ND tight end since 1984? Sure they've got Reuland and Ragone, but good luck replacing Fasano in 2005 and Carlson this year.

Gary, I am a Stanford Grad. It is not speculation about Weis. NFL Hall of Fame QB Steve Young, when interviewed about Spygate, stated that he thought Weis was an offensive genius until the details of the Patriots systemic stealing of defensive signals were detailed in the Matt Walsh interview and corroborated by former Pats players. The stolen signals were relayed from a backup QB to Weis who called the offensive play based on that info and called it into Tom Brady.
It is great that Notre Dame graduates many of its student athletes , But, the point of my commentary is that Weis earned his reputation as an offensive genius by cheating and that ND is enabling a cheater.

Can someone go ahead and point out a big game that Charlie Weis has won since arriving in South Bend? Anyone? I'll go ahead and wait. A 7-5 Michigan squad in '05?
This guy is quite simply a poor football coach, plain and simple, and you needn't look any further than their contest against Navy last year for proof of that.
My favorite of his litany of laughable quotes so far is the "No excuses, Michigan will make excuses" nonsense from a few weeks back. Indeed it turns out that he's a perfect fit there.
GO BLUE!

Charlie Weis also lost the medical malpractice suit he filed against the Docs at Mass General who performed bariatric surgery on him to treat his obesity. This season may not be a disappointment to the fans but their Head Coach should be.

Brian, is your football knowledge so limited that you actually aren't aware of the existence of position coaches? To answer your question... yes, we do have "a coach who just does tight ends." We also have coaches for the offensive linemen, receivers, quarterbacks, tailbacks, defensive linemen, linebackers, defensive backs, and special teams. We also have guys called "coordinators" who are in charge of the offense and defense.
Also, you're actually shocked that a football coach said his team was going to have a good season? Everyone and their brother expects Michigan to suck donkey balls this year, but you dont hear Rodriguez saying "yeah, we're gonna be a disappointment this season."
Come on, you're obviously reaching here. There have to be better insults than "Notre Dame has position coaches and tell their fans they will be good."
