Buried in one of ESPN's contrived point-counterpoints between Ivan Maisel, who drew the short straw and had to defend the BCS, and Pat Forde, who got to tear into it, is this nugget from Texas head coach Mack Brown:"I would like to see coaches not have a vote," Texas coach Mack Brown said. "We would have a panel like the one that chooses the 65 teams in basketball."Two thoughts spring immediately to mind:
- Amen.
- Holy crap, I do not want to be a guy on that panel.
Since team A and team B played teams like Utah State and Northern Colorado in the nonconference (and so did everyone else in team A and team B's conferences), there is absolutely no basis for comparison between the two teams. Pick team A and fans from team B will put a contract on your head. Pick team B and fans from team A will put a contract on your head.
Fun!

Hey, I've got a better idea...let's take the BCS OUT OF THE SELECTON PROCESS and go back to the coaches poll and sports writers poll selecting the MYTHICAL CHAMPIONSHIP like they use to. There are several teams that could be the National Champion on any given day and so why not go back to a system that anoints a team in any given year....heck that is half the fun of it..debating around the water cooler who has the best team.

For what it's worth, I do think there's a better way to structure the coaches' poll than what we've got now:

Admittedly, that's a pretty low bar to step over.

This just makes too much sense to actually happen. Most coaches don't do their own voting and whoever does do the voting (athletic department intern?) doesn't watch more than a game or two per week.

A PLAYOFF SYSTEM WILL NEVER COME INTO BEING BECAUSE OF ALL THE BOWL GAMES AND THE WAY THINGS ARE AT THIS TIME. THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE IT WORK IS TO LIMIT A SEASON TO TEN GAMES, AND THERE IS JUST TOO MUCH MONEY TO BE MADE WITH A TWELVE GAME SEASON. ONE WAY TO THIN IT OUT IS TO STOP THE POLICY OF SIX WINS MAKING A TEAM BOWL ELIGABLE. MAKE IT EIGHT WINS AND THE BCS POLLS WILL TAKE CARE OF ITSELF.
