I thought Shelley Smith of ESPN did an even-handed job when she broke the news that the University of Connecticut women's basketball team committed a recruiting violation by taking Maya Moore on a tour of ESPN. UConn coach Geno Auriemma does not agree with me.Auriemma said this on his weekly radio show:
"It's a story that has been rehashed by ESPN to serve its own purposes. ... Shelley Smith came up to talk to me to do a story on [Tennessee women's basketball coach] Pat Summitt and my relationship with her, why the series was canceled, and I flat out said, 'Go ask her. I didn't cancel it.' I didn't want to be involved in [that] story.
"And [Smith's] response was, 'OK, we're going to [report the violation].' ... What purpose does that serve? It's already been discussed and dealt with [last summer]. It's typical: 'Let's drum up some interest before the NCAA Tournament starts and hope these two meet in the finals so we can get boffo ratings' at the expense of Maya Moore."
The notion that this was done "at the expense of Maya Moore" strikes me as rather silly. No one is saying Moore did anything that any high school basketball player wouldn't do: She was offered a tour of ESPN and she accepted. What makes the story interesting is that it was Summitt, Auriemma's arch rival, who reported the tour to the NCAA. If Auriemma doesn't think that's newsworthy, he's wrong.

You could see the ignorance in Pat Summitt's eyes.Atypical southern attitude. We won the war, give it up already.Youth cannot not even be youth anymore, were forcing the kids today to grow to fast,to be more responsible then they should be,Sports use to be an enjoyment, but now coach's make you sick on there hunt for glory.Dont get me wrong, the connecticut coach is irogant beyond belief,I love when they lose the big one, just to see his expression on his face.

Hey Mark get a grip!! you sound like a typical guy who dosn't like the fact that Pat Aummit is the winningest coach in basketball history. Why don't you read one of her books and you will see she makes her player's tow the line as far as accademics. The majority of her player's are honer roll students. She makes her team a family and cares about every aspect of their lives. Yes I love to see Tenn. play Uconn.and I love it when Tenn. beats them.

Sorry, but Geno is correct on this one. It's an old story, it was dealt with, and really...what is the point of the media bringing it up again, much less a behind a not-so-subtle threat to do so? It is exactly a case of the media exploiting an old story at a timely point in order to regenerate an old newsline for their own, and nobody elses' purpose.

What kind of an idiot remark (Atypical southern attitude. We won the war, give it up already) is that? I am from the South and live in CT and proudly wear my UT shirt (I can't say that people around here embrace it when I do). Sorry dude, I have better things to do than think about who won or lost the war. I do think Gene is right though.

ESPN is way too big and watered down. Many of their reporters/sportscasters couldn't get a job at a local station they are so bad.....Dana Jacobson, Tony Kornheiser and Skip Bayless to name a few.

Wah, wah, wah! Geno is crying foul because ESPN reported that he committed a recruiting violation? Hey, how about NOT committing the violation in the first place? Then Pat Summitt doesn't have to report you to the NCAA...since it was obvious there was going to be no self reporting...and ESPN doesn't have a story to report at all! And how is this at Maya Moore's expense? She didn't cheat...whoever arranged her visit to ESPN did, and probably knew they were breaking the rules when they took her to Bristol. I have no pity for a cheater, and especially for this particular cheater!

First of all, I work for ESPN and we have athletes take free tours all the time. As a matter of fact, anyone off the street can come in and take the free tour. Maya and her mother did not get special attention. When Pat Summit and her team took the tour couple years ago, I didn't see them complain. They were all smiles- they did get special attention...mmm. The main issue here is, it was a tug of war of who would actually land Maya Moore and have the National Player of the Year. Pat lost and Geno won. Plain and simple. Pat was bitter and brought up the past. We respect Pat Summit here in CT (more than 700 people showed up for her book signing), but get a life. Concentrate on the positives instead of trying to bring down the greatest woman's basketball dynansty. Go UCONN!

Hey Patrick from ESPN, there is a hell of a difference in Tennessee taking their scholarship athletes on a tour of ESPN and taking a recruit on the tour! First of all, it is not a violation to schedule activities like this for teams while on a road trip, as it happens all the time; it is however, a recruiting violation to take a recruit on this type of outing. You can't ebtertain recruits off campus, and the last time I looked the Bristol campus of ESPN isn't part of the UCONN campus or university system. The hard fact is that UCONN committed a recruiting violation when they arranged her visit to ESPN...and if they didn't know it was a violation, they should have...they have a complaince director to avoid just this type of thing. It was not the most egregious violation by any means, but it was a violation nonetheless...and why it is was reported doesn't matter as much as the fact that UCONN allowed it to happen!

It's a shame. These athletics played hard all season
to be in the position where they are today. Let it go Pat, have fun it's March. May the best team win.

We won the war? We won the war? YOU didn't win anything. WE are all americans. We people on the other side of the ocean talk about US or want to kill US, I don't think that they talk about yankees or southerners. They talk about Americans. YOU didn't wim anything. By the way, if you know any black people, THEY aren't slaves either.

Let you in on a little secret Mark, people in the south don't really think about the war anymore. We've moved past it. Especially considering it was in the 1860's! Hello?!!
I believe that shows how ignorant you are to bring it up. It's getting to be a tired line. Let me guess, you also think we don't have indoor plumbing and run around barefoot. Be an intellectual and have a better argument next time.

The issue is the timing of the ESPN report it's an old story, not a major violation. Had they run with it when the UCONN / Tenn series was called off (costing ESPN a marquee event and ad revenue)I would have no issue with it. ESPN is using it to create a buzz and try to boost ratings while they broadcast the women's NCAA tourney. I would imagine it could be distracting to a young player and that does her a disservice as she's done nothing but play her heart out all year long. Shame on you ESPN!

First of all, a womens college basketball coach has his own radio show? Secondly, it's amazing that somebody cares enough about womens college basketball to report on a recruiting violation in this, ahem, sport.

I've always been an avid intense sports fan in many categories, but please, the ultimate outcome for any of my favorites don't affect my life in the least!! Who cares who went to visit ESPN! Who cares if white socks boring Joe Paterno retires or not!! Does Big Ben of the Steelers deserve $100 Mil! Hell no!!
This country is so out of whack regarding Sports that I sometimes forget it is totally about money, money and more money!! North against the South, Black vs White is such tired bull shit I wonder if that's all people have left in life.. Once football & basketball are over, then we have the cry baby baseball players to endure.. The good alternative is turning off the TV and really enjoy life!!

Who is not tired of ESPN, if you are not located East of Chicago you do not exist. Now and then UCLA will get a word or two. Does Chicago, Dallas, Houston, St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Seattle, not have spots writers? The only ones you ever hear on ESPN are the East Coast or Detroit.

Read Patrick's comments.... Excellent!! That's all that needs to be said. Kudos! . This also seems like another case of a member of the press not getting what he or she wants, then digging up dirt to retaliate; journalistic hack....and, of course, Michael Davis Smith thinks it was an even handed job of reporting. If you can't say something nice about a person.... I hear Perez Hilton is looking for good writers.
