Here is an interview that Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie had on ESPN's Pardon the Interruption.
He was asked about the pressure and expectations of coaching at a place at Kentucky. At the 2:30 mark, he says this:
"I can't think of one coach in Ameri- ... well, maybe there's one coach or a few coaches that wouldn't want that challenge."
That had to be a shot at Florida coach Billy Donovan. Maybe shot is a strong word, but it is still a dig at the Gators coach. As you may know, Donovan was the frontrunner for the Kentucky job and bowed out ... which gave Gillispie the shot.
Gillispie has rewarded the Wildcats with a dramatic turnaround midseason, a 12-4 SEC mark, a share of the SEC Coach of the Year award and a likely trip to the NCAA tournament.
In Donovan's defense, he had his own challenge. Building a basketball program at a football school and winning back-to-back championships is quite a feat. You cannot blame him for not wanting to leave that.

I'll still grant that Kentucky is among the best jobs in the country, but you can't blame Donovan for not leaving Florida, which has def. joined the elite ranks over the past 10 years. Florida isn't Texas A & M.

Billy D. passed on the UK job since he had his eye on the NBA. At the time, it was a college vs. the pros decision, for the most part. Why would he go to UK when he knew that Orlando was lining up with their bags of money, and to boot... he wouldn't really even have had to uproot his family. That pretty much made it a no-brainer. After the switcheroo Donovan pulled on the Magic job, I think Kentucky ended up with the right "Billy" (Gillispie) for the job after all.

It is so refreshing to have a coach like billy g that gets the most out of his players without distroying their confidence as tubby did with his players--case in point Joe Craford and Bradley. I couldn't stand to even watch a tubby smith team the last couple of years. Thank god its over tubby almost ruined big blue nation.

I think that the Kentucky coaching job would be the pinnacle of college coaching.

Once again, the media will attempt to make something out of nothing...listening to Coach Gillispie's comments, he appears and sounds very sincere and straight forward with his comments. At no time does he convey his responses as if he is attempting to point fingers at anyone. I believe his "maybe one coach or a few coaches" remark was an effort on his part to admit that he wasn't the first coaching choice for Kentucky and didn't wish to make a comment that would give that impression or permit the media to attempt to assess it as, "doesn't Billy remember that at least one other coach was offered the job first and didn't take it, Billy Donovan?" Why must someone, somewhere for some ridiculous reason attempt to belittle someone who simply graciously agree to be a guest on a sports talk show. Coach Gillispie has dealt with every obstacle placed in his way during this first year at Kentucky and he'll deal with this one, as well. Oh wait, he's probably already moved on and doesn't care. Prove of what I'm saying....just look at who wants to talk to him now that he's rebounded the Cats back into a winning season....the same fools who attacked him so quickly when the season was but one month old. Let's just cheer for good, solid basketball regardless of which school participates, wins or loses. Go CATS ! I, for one, backed you the entire way and my only other comments on this page four months ago stood the test of time.

The Kentucky job is the pinnacle? come on- - - - it is a great job. The pinnacle? What about UNC? or UCLA? or Duke? The Kentucky job may be on par with jobs at those schools but certainly not any better. Given recent history UNC appears to be the program that has best stood the test of time.

Donovan has two things Gillispie doesn't: a national championship and integrity. Donovan is committed to winning; Gillispie is committed to the biggest paycheck. Hope Gillispie is fired after this season.

This season has shown me that UK made the right choice by hiring Gillispie. I can't believe the comments Donovan is making about his freshman. Good way to instill confidence in them, telling them they'll never be good. Who wants someone with that attitude. Gillispie has the right attitude, says all the right things, motivates his players, and is able to turn something that doesn't look so good at the beginning of the season into something that has lots of promise for this season and future. What would have happened if he told his players that they could never win this year?
Thanks for not hiring Donovan, Kentucky. I can't believe I ever wanted him to coach the big blue. He got lucky with a bunch of good players the last couple of years.

Correcting myself - Thanks for not choosing Kentucky Billy D., I should say. It was not Kentucky's choice, but I'm glad it happened the way it did.
