I can't see this being an effective policyOne immediate change from past seasons: first-year DT coach John Hendrick will not allow any profanity from the players. We wish Hendrick well, but count on this bit of news circulating to USF defensive line recruits from rival schools. Young men (er, um, most men) swear. A lot. Athletics is a warm environment for the uncouth mouth.
Hendrick, an ordained minister, joined the Bulls' staff after a one-year stint at Division I-AA South Carolina State.
Attempts to curb profanity tend to be in vain and recruiting is the lifeblood of most successful college football programs.
Something has to give.

I think Coach Hendrick's ultimatum may turn into an "option" then into a memory but....
I think it's refreshing in the compromised NCAA football world. Unlike the free commerce market, competition may not always be a good thing.

I applaud the coaches decision. As my old 7th grade teacher used to say, "Profanity is the crutch of the ignorant". In other words, curse words don't express much except the low intelligence of the user. The coach's prohibiting the use of profanity in his players raises the bar and sets a tone of higher thinking skills. And, since smarter players make better game decisions, I feel the coach is just trying to do his job. But, I doubt if he will be able to persevere in today's low-brow atmosphere. Too bad for his players (and the rest of us).

This is hardly news...
And it's a poorly written article at that.
How do you get AOL to feature your blogs/articles? As a journalism student who already writes articles focusing on nutrition, I'd like to get some publicity and feedback on my work.

Are you kidding me? Cussing is part of the passion that comes with athletics. Cussing is not ignorant, unless overused because of a lack of vocabulary. If used in proper context it can evoke passion and light a fire within a team or individual.

Any recruit who chooses to play elsewhere simply because there is a ban on swearing at USF is an idiot. Using that as a reason to play somewhere else is the weakest excuse I've heard in a long time.
"But gee, Mom and Dad, I don't want to play there. They won't let me swear!"
If not being allowed to swear is the worst thing that happens to them as they begin their adult lives, I'd say they were blessed. Kudos to coach Hendrick.

Take a look at BYU, where the Mormons don't swear. There are several Christian schools who perform with excellence as well as clean sportsmanship, where you won't hear swearing. Schools such as Wheaton College (Il) and Bethel University (Mn). Swearing is reflexive conduct for the poorly educated, who can't find the precise words to express their feelings.

I also applaud Coach for this move, I also agree that this column is poorly written with an obvious biast and prejuduce against a man with morale standards. Cussing isn't "Part of the Game", obviously now it's a part of history, go USF and Go coach hendrick...

Good . The players might learn new words and expand their vocabalary a bit . Besides if they learn to curb their cussing , they might not say at time when it can really look bad for them or the team .

There was an article in the paper approximately a week ago that said our young children are swearing and cursing in public more than the last 2 generations. What do people get out of using foul language. It is a big turn off to me. It is just plain senseless to swear and curse. It shows no upbringing or respect for the people around you. I think coaches who swear at their players need to be fired. A high school coach grabbed my grandson by his uniform and he did not play the sport again and he was a good player.

It's a respectable stance and only an idiotic blogger like Mr. Grummell would find fault with it. Let the criminals and like-minded go to U of Miami. Public swearing is out of control, offensive , and reminds me when I hear it that a large part of our population is relatively ignorant. You want to put ear muffs on your small children when you go in a public place. You can't make it down an aisle in Wal-mart without hearing the F word;thus I'm proud to say I haven't been in one in at least 4 years. The gangsta crowd can hardly form a sentence without a curse word.

Oh what a pill this guy sounds like! Who the [heck] would want to join a school team with a regulation against cussing? It sounds likely to distract at least part of the staff's attentions away from crucial points of the game and how well it is being played. "Last night, no we didn't score as many points as our opponent. But we got through the whole game without any cuss words!" Give me a break!

Coach Hendrick needs to be applauded for his ban on cussing. I am so tired of the trash coming out of the mouths of people today. Using profanity to the degree that society does shows a lack of vocabulary and an inability to express oneself completely. It is also just bad manners. Thank you, coach Hendrick.

The hight school in Georgia also had a good man in charge of the team and they didn't cuss, and they were able to win! I hope that other schools/Univ. will figure our that this is a good thing! Our Lord is in control.

Good for Coach hendrick. I know to some this seems like no big deal, but this is HUGE! In these days and times to do something so POSITIVE, when the country is literally tearing itself apart at the seams, makes me think we might just make it in this country! It has INPSIRED me. It is a huge step in the right direction. Instead of arguing and cursing each other, maybe we might go back to exchanging thoughts and ideas in a CIVIL manner.Good for Coach Hendrick!
