Yes, that Appalachian State.LSU will open the 2008 football season at home Aug. 30 against Appalachian State, which shocked Michigan last season.
The game between LSU and Appalachian State will mark the first time that a defending champion from the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly I-A) will meet the defending champion from the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) in the season-opener the following year.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is how the supposedly mighty SEC does business. Thing is, the boys from Boone are still a cupcake. And now they've lost that ace in the hole of being able to sneak up on people. In other words, you'll see this in about seven months:
We award LSU no points for arranging this game, and may God have mercy on their soul.

Gee. Maybe now some school other than OSU will be verbally penalized for playing a softy non-conference schedule. Heavin forbid it be LSU or anyone in the SEC.

I'll be delighted to take those 49 points, Brian. You are in for a shock. App State didnt "sneak up" on Michigan last season, they just flat out were better than them. The App State QB, Amanti Edwards, is simply the best football player in the country....in ANY division. App State may not win...LSU is a great program...but this will NOT be a blowout.

They just got finished scheduling VT as an OOC game. And you ignore LSU's overall schedule, which features games against what will be preseason top 5's in Florida and UGA, as well as an Auburn team in the 10-12 game and solid teams in Alabama and South Carolina. Find a team outside of the SEC with a tougher schedule than LSU's.

And I suppose the supposedly mightier Big Ten and Michigan get a pass for scheduling this cupcake last year...you know, when everyone still thought they were a cupcake?
Careful, your blatant bias is showing.

52-3, yea right! Brain, you need to take a little trip up to "The Big House" and ask them about the rude awakeing the "Black and Gold" of App.State put on them! Amanti Edwards, simply put is the most explosive QB in college football! With RB Devon Moore stepping it up, the offence shouldn't miss a beat. Don't think for 1 sec. that Head Coach Jerry Moore won't have them ready!

Whoever Brian Brummell is left out the small fact that virtually every Division I school in the east refuses to play Appalachain State. Do you think they're trying to avoid a 52-3 win on the way to a bowl bound season? The Mountaineers should give LSU a decent game, and just like in the Big House, yes they could possibly win it and hats off to LSU for having the balls to play the game. And whoever Brian Brummell is, do a little home work before you pull out your pen next time.

They won't blow out App. State huh? You mean the way the did not blowout VT last year? Cause we all know App State is better than VT.
APP State is a worthy opponent....It takes guts to schedule this team after what they did last year to Michigan. LSU though will not only kill App State, they will knock them out of contention to win yet another 1-AA crown. So thorough will the beatdown be.

Brian, what was your prediction last Sept 1, maybe 52 to 3 Michigan. As much as I respect your opinion, which is not much. I think they will still have to play the game to declare a winner. What you really have is two great programs accustomed to success. Alsways remember if you do not accept defeat, it has a hard time finding you.Just remember the last minute of the Michigan game. Coach Moore will have the Apps ready and with Amanti Edwards healthy they will score some points. I look for a great Game with several lead changes, and the winner will be the one who wants it the most.

And if LSU had declined the matchup, you'd say they were big pansies who were afraid of getting humiliated by a weenie. I guess scheduling a top tier I-AA team really has become a no win situation, just like the pundits predicted four months ago.

Don't look now, but the tough-as-nails-never-schedules-DivIAA-teams Big Ten has at least 8 out of 11 teams that will play a DivIAA team next year. All except Mighigan and MSU play one with Wisconsin having yet to setup their last non-conference game. The SEC has 9 out of 12 with UT, Vandy, and Bama not playing one.
Everyone schedules these cupcakes cuz the season's too long nowadays and it's too difficult to find 4 quality, non-conference teams to play every year.

I can't think of any other reason to schedule this game as the season opener than to say F-U Michigan. Les Miles will have them ready and they will eat App State alive.

If you want to give a conference grief about scheduling, how about the ACC, which has three schools (Clemson, FSU and Ga. Tech)who have each scheduled TWO 1-AA opponents...

Fair enough, but the ACC is so far off the map, even our ACC guys are rarely anything but morose about the prospects of the conference.

Oh it will be a blow out alright, if ASU has anything near the defense of their 06 team. Otherwise it will be kinda close, but ASU is fast and will score a lot. The play-off system prepares teams with talent that the BSC teams do not get.
