In college football, 'preparation' is often the intangible that leads to whether a team wins or loses a bowl game. After all, we're dealing with college kids here; the distractions of the holidays, traveling to a bowl destination, and just being a 19-year old on the road with 80 best friends can divert a young player's attention and result in a less than ideal performance.
That didn't happen this time.
Ohio State came in prepared, hungry, and with a chip on their shoulder. They rode it and running back Beanie Wells to a 10-0 start. The problem was that LSU was bigger, stronger, and faster, particularly on defense. And they prepared just as well, if not better, than their opponent. After the Bucks' fast start, LSU responded with 24 unanswered points to end the half.
LSU's first drive of the 3rd quarter bogged down when the Tigers were forced to punt, but Ohio State breathed fresh life into the Bayou Bengals after they were called for roughing the kicker. They followed that up with a late hit personal foul which set LSU up for breaking the game wide open when they scored their fourth touchdown of the night.
How did LSU win this game? First, from top to bottom, they simply fielded better players. QB Matt Flynn easily outplayed and outmanaged Todd Boeckman. LSU's offensive and defensive lines controlled the line of scrimmage for most of the game. LSU's receivers were faster and more physical, and made big plays when it really mattered.
And second, they didn't allow themselves to believe the hype. They showed up ready to do battle with a tough football team. They were physical in their play and after being bloodied early, took the fight to their opponent and kept it there.
Ohio State fought, and with the exception of some terrible tackling in the secondary, the effort really seemed to be there for all 60 minutes. It just wasn't enough to win the game. Not even close, unfortunately.
For LSU, it's celebration time. For Ohio State, it's back to the drawing board. The Big 10 powerhouse has a miserable 0-9 record against SEC teams and has suffered back to back, multiple-TD losses in its last two championship game appearances -- both against SEC teams -- and only a touchdown scored in garbage time kept the spread in this game from looking a lot worse.

But ... but ... but ... Michigan beat Florida. I mean, we all know that the Wolverines win means the Big Ten is better than the SEC. Screw the fact that Tennessee beat Wisconsin or this is the 2nd straight year Ohio State was blown out of the BCS title game. Big Ten Big Ten Big Ten! (note: sarcasm)
C'mon, let's get a playoff in here so we can stop having Big Ten teams not have to play anyone all year long and get a shot at a title game.

no wonder the Big ten doesn't like the idea of a plus-one. They can ride easy schedules to BCS games. this poses a huge question for the big 10. Can they hang with any conference really? A huge low-point for them was when Herbstriet said they fall somewhere between the Mac and Conference USA...ouch

By the way: it is closer to the NCAA basketball tournament than it is to the last time Ohio State played a football game.

Everyone knows USC has the best team y'all. LSU won zero. You'll get more respect if you travel to USC and play them. LSU plays their toughest games at home. Only when you play the BIG BOYS will you get respect(USC).

Wud have been 45-17 if LSU didn't sit on the ball and give them a gimme TD,,SEC rules and the sad thing is,Georgia wud have beaten OSU by 40,nothing like getting ur azz handed to you 2 yrs in a row in primetime, and they only won in 2002 cuz of the phantom game over call, tht was a joke in itself. The Canes stomped tht azz in tht game, the ref even said he messed up,,OSU sucks and always will be a joke lol Geaux Tigers, stomp tht corn-fed azz!

USC could have proved that they can compete with the SEC by having the Rose Bowl pick Georgia as an opponent. Instead they chose a patsy so they could try to sneak in the back door for NO. 1, and to set up a high rating next year.

I love the fact that the SEC just kicks the shit out of the big 10, Kentucky could have won the Big 10 2 years in a row in football. The ESPN guys just whine up a storm over it. Corso couldn't win when he was coaching, so they made an expert out of him on ESPN. What did Herbstreit's teams do when he played? USC made their bed so be IT. My whole point is this, the BCS maynot be the best way to do things, but some of the guys questioning it how would they know whats best? ESPN had a little mouthy black lady doing it last week, I know she played a hell of alot of football. Lert's see Stephan A Mouth Smith, Jim Rome, Fat Ass Andy Katz can anyone tell me where these guys played at?

I wonder what the score would have been if they played the championship game in say, the Ohio State stadium or the Big House in Michigan or any of the stadiums up North. Lets face it the teams in the South always get to play at home giving them a good advantage to start with. I the the Buckeye's did a pretty good job. Yot need to remember they also had a 1st year quarterback. Commentor # 8 should get the chip off of his shoulder. To the Sports Writer's 38 to 24 is hardly a blowout. 50 to 0 is a blowout. Check out where these players and chouching staff come from. When you insult a team chance's are some are from the state who's team lost. Have a good day all you bitter people, I know I will.

Ohio State should NOT have been in this game, they have no championship game and did not play one top 20 team all year. Until the BCS fixes the set up, inferior teams from the Big 10 will continue to be placed in the BCS Championship Game and we will continue to watch garbage. Congrats LSU.

H'mmm I believe the last time LSU went west and played USC on their home turf....23-0 LSU. Haven't smelled a trojan (the football variety from the west coast) since.
By the way...where is the smack talker Troy or Trey or Trev...whatever. Last time I was here he was telling me to get a job a Mickey D's. Seems to me that the OSU defense, offense and coaches all got schooled by the "stupid" LSU staff and players.
Seriously, I have to take my hat (fear the hat) off to Miles....I was pleased with the poise and game plan.

Way to go LSU. Congratulatiobs to the school and Tiger fans.
I'm sure the talking heads will say poor Ohio State. They had another BCS title stolen by another little SEC team.

our nonconference schedule of patsies takes a toll.oh and michigan plays a tougher nonconference schedule every year.thats why they beat sec teams on a regular basis.
imbeciles up here will never admit this ...but it does not change the fact it is so.
