Let there be no doubt: USC is scary-good. The Trojans took advantage of turnovers on three consecutive Illini possessions, the first coming on a play deep in USC's red zone, to turn a somewhat close game into an unmitigated pistol-whipping, 49-17.
Illinois receiver Arrelious Benn fumbled after taking a reception inside USC's five-yard-line, and the Trojans recovered in the end zone. From there, it went touchdown, pick, touchdown, fumble, touchdown, and a USC lead that easily could have been cut to 21-17 was instead 42-10 before the Illini could catch their breath.
The real turning point, however, may not have been the fumble recovery that started the avalanche; on the ensuing drive, USC faced a 2nd and 12 at their 18 when quarterback John David Booty looped a backward pass over tailback Joe McKnight's head. As the Illini defense slowed, McKnight picked up the ball and sprinted 56 yards for a backbreaking first down deep in Illini territory, as shown at right. Six plays later, the Trojans found the end zone, and the game was effectively over.
The lone bright spot for Illinois was Rashard Mendenhall, who tallied over 200 total yards including a 79-yard touchdown run on the second play of the second half. The speedy tailback racked up seven of Illinois' 17 first downs and accounted for none of their turnovers. Still, it wasn't near enough, as the Illini were down by 39 points by the time starters started coming off the field.
The amount of credit due to the USC offensive line is inestimable; they opened gaping holes for tailbacks Chauncey Washington and McKnight all night long, and they made John David Booty look downright competent. Indeed, the Trojan offense racked up 633 yards in a well-balanced attack, and at no point did the Illinois defense look capable of slowing the Trojan attack.
As the endgame approached, the Trojan players tried to douse Pete Carroll with Gatorade. Carroll's aura is an invisible steel cocoon, however, and the man was impeccably Saharan as he accepted the championship trophy. For him, like for his team, the victory was no sweat.

Illinois beats Ohio State at Columbus, SC smacks Illini by 32 and Buckeyes are playing in the BCS title game. College football is the biggest joke in sports. Love the game but it will be dead in no time without a playoff system. Don't think people will scream if OSU does beat LSU. Talk about a broken system.

And USC lost to Stanford.
LSU allowed 50 points by an Arkansas team held to a whopping 7 today by a non-BCS team (technically, anyway).
USC made its way into the Rose Bowl on the strength of Dennis Dixon's knee injury alone. So you can't really blame SC's injuries, which they had as well.
So I guess your point is that we should only look at a couple of games and not the whole picture.

USC is good and cocky. They started the dancing, primadonna-camera shots, and trash talking in the first quarter. I can't argue against their skill as a ball team, but their sportsmanship is terrible.

Injuries are part of the game, and nobody will feel sorry for you especially if your SC. Fruthermore, the receiving corp wisn't and wasn't as outstanding as they have been in the past. But, major improvements all around. Mark Sanchez received valuable playing time, and the receivers will be that much better. Joe McKnight is and will be a stud, and better than #5. Look out for the next season! The Trojans hung on and will be that much better for the 2008 season. Their first 3 games will be killer games as well. UCLA, eat your heart out!

USC is a joke! They have been over rated all season. Now they show no class in running up the score and lack of sportmanship. Nothing to be proud of Pete.

Hmmm... A USC team starts out ranked in the top 5, eventually falls multiple times, beats up on a weak conference and is granted a weak bowl opponent, who it destroys, then ends up back in the top 5 preseason. Where have we seen this before?
Oh yeah. Last year. Sigh. They lost to Stanford. Let's move on.

usc is a joke? people should stop saying pac 10 is weak. it is the oldest and most ignorant argument ever. usc lost to oregon who at the time was one of the best teams in the nation. and now they are probably the best team in the nation. running up the score only enhances and proves this.
"but usc lost to stanford who is one of the worst in the nation!!!"
very true. but it doesnt negate how awesome usc is. they are not overrated and they werent in the preseason polls. how many teams would beat usc RIGHT NOW? 3? 4?

This is America. Where we are bred to Kick Ass & Take Names. Don't hate USC for Kicking the tar out of Illinois. It's how and who we are as Americans. I didn't see anyone complain when the Great Tom Osborne, the Funnin' & Gunnin' Steve Spurrier, the Immortal Lou Holtz or the Ageless Bobby Bowden used to run up the score. In fact USC learned this lesson the hard way. Remember when Choklahoma went on to face LSU in the National Championship game, a few years back and got creamed? That's when USC went on to play Michigan in the Rose Bowl? They didn't go to the BCS game because they did not have enough margin of victory points. In other words they didn't plaster the little guys and they played a good sportsmans game. But because Fans around the nation are so retarded and only look at the blow outs, USC did not play LSU (which we all know would have been a better game.) That year they split the National Championship with LSU. The next year, USC beat the living crap out of Oklahoma. So don't go telling me that they have no class. They have to slaughter people to gain any respect. That's the way it works. That's Sports. That's what makes us watch. That's what makes us cheer. That's what makes rout for the underdog. That's AMERICA! That's what makes us great! So quit your bitchin'.

look, the best conferences in america are definitely the pac10 and the sec..we should find a way to get both our conferences to play together during the season just to see who comes out on top..we could argue about this all day until we can actually compete and let the actual competition decide who's better and not our mouths or stat sheets...the pac10 definitely looked strong and impressive in the preseason having defeated several non conference foes..injuries definitely plaqued us too during the regular season..but usc totally squashed all that pac10 trash bashing..usc can definitely walk the walk and talk the talk..west coast rules..now let's see if lsu can put osu in their place..put your money where your mouth is

USC is great. Pete Carroll is not known to run up the score. Illinois's defense is just too weak against thte third stringers of SC. It would have been at least 56 to 17 if Herschel Dennis had tried to get in the end zone on the last play. I wonder how good Ohio State is when they lost to Illinois at home. Fight on SC, you are the best team in the country.

Yes, Illinois beat OSU and USC beat Illinois. And that means diddly-squat. Does Stanford belong in a national title game? Or the other team that beat USC? If Southern Cal had taken care of business during the regular season, they wouldnt have to bitch about not being in the BCS. They'd be there. They're not and OSU is. Screw 'em.

And there's no way USC ever would have (or will) jump from 7th to 1st in the polls. You want to win a national championship, you can't lose two games. As Pete Caroll is well aware.

A playoff in college football is not the answer...the team that was lucky to avoid injuries during the season would likely win...with the current "broken system" at least every game is important...look at the NFL...Indy lays down at home in last game to avoid injuries and lets Tenn beat them and Cleveland is screwed
