WVU loses to Pitt. No, that can't be correct. Did that really happen?
Why, yes. I did not just hallucinate that. A 4-TD underdog beats West Virginia in Morgantown in a game that no one, and I mean no one thought they could win.
Un-freaking-believable.
Oh, and by the way: #1 Missouri just fell to Oklahoma. That's less of a shock; Oklahoma was favored.
But no matter how you slice it or dice it, #1 and #2 both fell. Again.
So now you have the ultimate BCS nightmare: total disarray, total chaos. This is what the anti-BCS anarchists are always dreaming of. Now, it's here.
BCS standings:
1. Missouri
2. West Virginia
3. Ohio State 11-1
4. Georgia 10-2
5. Kansas 11-1
6. Virginia Tech
7. LSU
8. USC
9. Oklahoma
10. Florida 9-3
You ask me, I think it's rather obvious what should happen.
Ohio State?
Tressel comes up roses again -- but gets to turn them down. Ohio State is #1 yet again and will play in the BCS title game for the second year in a row. Congratulations, Buckeyes.
Georgia?
It's just tough luck for #4 Georgia that they didn't get a chance to represent the SEC East in the SEC Championship game. The way LSU played -- and the way Georgia finished their season -- you'd have to think they would have had at least as many opportunities to win that game as Tennessee had. If they had managed to do that, there would be no debate: Georgia would be playing for a BCS Title. But that's pure fantasty at this point. Based on recent events, I don't see Georgia remaining at #4; while they sat idle, #7 BCS LSU beat another ranked team and won a conference championship.
Kansas?
Forgive me for saying this, Kansas fans, but a 1-loss Kansas appearing in the title game will not happen for two reasons. One, their schedule was far too soft for any voter to take the Jayhawks seriously. Two, they didn't win their conference, much less their division. I can't see too many voters keeping Kansas' ranking intact. Expect Kansas to drop.
Virginia Tech?
Here we encounter our first pingings of the geiger counter as we approach BCS meltdown: Virginia Tech meets most of the voters' requirements for a title game appearance. They're ACC Champions. They have only two losses. And at #6, they should slide neatly into position at #2 to play for a BCS title. One problem: they were demolished by LSU early in the season. And I do mean demolished: they lost 48-7. That's just Va Tech's unlucky draw to get the Tigers in this year, of all years.
LSU?
Ding-ding-ding. Written off for dead just hours ago, the 2-loss Tigers, in my view, will most likely get the nod due to a long list of factors: they're SEC Champions, they beat Va Tech as previously mentioned, they have the "inertia" of an expected title appearance, and despite how bad they've looked at times they still look like the best 2-loss team in the country, particularly when they're healthy. After all, they did win an SEC championship despite playing their backup QB and with a rash of injuries throughout the roster. And I think the public would love to see another Big Ten/SEC matchup for the national title.
USC?
Nope. Lost to Stanford. Sorry, that's the worst loss, by far, of any team in the Top 10. This will not be overlooked and USC is not likely to jump anyone except perhaps West Virginia.
Oklahoma?
This is an interesting one. Yeah... what about Oklahoma? They're a two-loss team, like LSU. They're the Big 12 conference champion. They look the part. Biggest problem? Their two losses both look bad. They're only two weeks removed from losing to Texas Tech, although starting QB Sam Bradford was concussed for the majority of that contest. Losing to lowly Colorado early in the season is also an ugly mark on their record. Still, I'd feel better about Oklahoma playing Ohio State than Kansas or Virginia Tech.
Hawaii?
Get real. Call me when Hawaii starts playing D-IA football.
Final call?
I think this one's too close to call definitively, but I think voters are going to put LSU, two losses and all, into the BCS title game to keep Tressel and the Buckeyes honest.
That's a game I'd really love to see. How about you?

Was there not a rule that you had to win your conference championship to be in the BCS title game? I thought that rule was implemented after OU played in the BCS title game after loosing to K-State a few years back. Right?

Heres to a Ohio State and LSU national championship game. That is good for Hawaii because its saves them from getting raped by LSU in the Sugar Bowl. It was projected that LSU would be playing Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl on the ESPN website.

I am not aware of that rule, but I won't say it doesn't exist. However, I never heard any announcer talking about and they did talk about Georgia in the title game.
I actually agree with the writer on this one. I think LSU will squeak ever so slightly past Georgia into the title game with LSU. The only other scenario I believe is Georgia vs. Ohio State. Either that or Hawaii vs. Appalchain State. :)

i don't think ohio state is a lock. a weak big 10, no championship game and last year's blowout could hurt them. for me the best conference play this year was in the sec and pac-10 so i'd like to see usc and lsu get the nod...

Give the title to whoever plays Ohio St. The Buckeyes were embarrased last year and will be again. They played nobody all year and will be beat badly playing OU, USC, LSU or Georgia. Put Georgia in the Rose with USC and LSU in the NC with OU. Ohio can play Va Tech in the Fiesta.

If the BCS and the fans want the BEST matchup for the championship game, it has to be LSU vs. USC! No doubt about it.

Unless all conferences have a championship game or no conferences have one then the inequity in the system will continue. The computers favor teams that win more games so 11-2 gets favored over 10-2. But the Big10 and PAC10 don't have a championship game (do they even have enough teams for divisions?)
And remember that twice a team that lost its championship game still played in the BCS big one (Nebraska, Oklahoma).
So this mess will continue to happen until they fix the system. Playoff anyone?

I'm SO down for a playoff! Let the cream rise to the top, and the only way that happens is a playoff system. It's time for NCAA football to step up like NCAA hoops and NCAA baseball. Ohio State in the National Championship is a sham and and absolute RIP OFF to all college football fans except, of course, Buckeye Nation.

As a Miami Fan(atic) I can honestly tell you guys that I don't see a rested LSU team losing to ANYONE. I witnessed first hand a couple of years ago.
They are an absolute train-wreck waiting to happen for whatever poor soul ends up on the other end of "GIVIN 'EM THE BUSINESS!"
OHIO STATE HAS PLAYED ONLY ONE TEAM THAT IS NOW RANKED! And they lost that game! That means something!
VT saw a rested LSU. -Nuff Said
Georgia didn't even win their own division of the SEC.
Kansas? See Ohio State. And see Georgia.
USC??? Hmmm? Would be interesting, and they played a real schedule. Still, the Stanford thing is just a bit much.
Oklahoma REALLY should be more in the discussion. They probably match up better with LSU than anyone else out there. They had a pretty bad loss to Tech, but they pulled it together, and their resume is a hell of a lot better than Ohio State's. A focused Oklahoma team is the only hope for anything resembling a competitive Championship Game.
Let Kansas see VT.
Let WVU get Florida
Give USC to OSU
Meanwhile Hawaii is getting beat down in their first game of the season... Soon to be (0-1).

Those of you who think USC's loss to Stanford should keep them out apparantely aren't remembering that at the time USC was decimated by injuries. And as bad as that loss was, Stanford isn't that bad. They beat a healthy Cal team today who beat the crap out of SEC member Tennessee who almost beat LSU today in their conference title game. Give me USC vs. LSU or Ohio State. Or, we could just do it right and get rid of this ridiculous system and have a playoff.

Hey Aaron W you are obviously a victim of east coast biased. The Pac-10's third to worst team spanked the SEC's team that almost won the SEC title game today. The SEC is the overrated conference. Why would we put Ohio State in the NC game aging to get demolished. I would rather see a Georgia/Kansas or LSU/Kansas game. Will they let a 2 loss team in the NC game though? Please don't let it be a Ohio State/Kansas game that would suck.

LET'S BE REAL makes some very valid points but I still think LSU vs. USC is the best matchup for all fans of college football. Oklahoma's losses to Colorado and Texas Tech really stand out and they barely beat Iowa State. USC has lost 1 out of their last 73 games to an out of conference team and always has one of the best out of conference schedules. It will be great to see USC beat up on Ohio State in USC's second game next year after playing on the road against Virginia in week 1. That OSU/USC game is after Ohio State's games against Youngstown State and Ohio. Pac10 teams get up for USC as if it were the last game on earth.

We all hate it. But OSU will get the NC nod. I honestly believe that UGA is the best team in the nation right now. (To be fair, I am a UGA student and am very willing to admit that bias) However, my reason for saying UGA should make the NC is because I believe we proved at the end of the season that we can play with and beat anyone. LSU has not done that. OU has not done that. Honestly, I think the best NC game would be UGA/USC. I honestly believe those are the two best teams in the nation right now. And lets be honest, nobody wants to play UGA or USC.

Gil19.... Georgia proved what???
Besides getting the stuffing beat out of them by Tennesee, and losing to South Carolina...
I dunno. LSU has two losses also, but as Les Miles said himself, they were both in like 3OT. One was to a then-surging Kentucky team and the other was to Superman. -Not Tebow, Ryan, the REAL SUPERMAN.
Anyway, like someone said, OSU will probably be there, and they will be an underdog against a rejuvinated and motivated LSU team who has been worn down all season by a REAL FREAKIN SCHEDULE...

Maybe they should not have ANY rankings until 3 or 4 games before the end of the season? That way the farces like Michigan, Wisconsin, Louisville, UCLA, Rutgers, Florida State, Boise State, South Florida, Kentucky, and Connecticut won't play WAY bigger roles as far as "quality wins" than they should when they are beaten. Just a thought.

Georgia proved that they could play and beat anyone. You can bring up the UT and USCar, but thats ignoring the team UGA is. I'd like to point out both of those losses came early in the season while we were playing 3 FRESHMEN on the line. We still are. Our feature running back (though not our only one.. and he only became our feature back after the UT game) is a freshman. And UGA is red-hot. We have not had a close game in the last 6. We have won all of them by more than 10. This includes UF, AU and a UK team that BEAT LSU. Also we only lost to SCar by 4 points and UT had a bye week before the UGA/UT game to prepare for us. This was only the second road game that HALF the offensive line had ever been to. And unless my memory is incredibly flawed, UT has one of the largest stadiums in the country. I think UGA has proved that it belongs in the country's elite and I stand by my former assessment.

All the "inexperienced youth" and "injury" excuses can be thrown right out the window, it's football and that's just the nature of the sport. Otherwise USC would be in the National Championship HANDS DOWN! Even with their youth and NUMEROUS injuries this year, USC is still right there in the National Championship conversation.
