FanHouse brought the phrase and concept of "Crooming" into the college football lexicon. And now, perhaps it's time to take it back out.
Stop the presses: Mississippi State has a 2-game win streak over Bama and Croom is 1-0 against the highest paid coach in the sport.
Although their 17-12 win over Saban's Tide wasn't pretty, it was a win against one of college football's most storied programs.
At 6-4, Croom's Bulldogs are bowl eligible with two games remaining against Arkansas and Ole Miss -- both are winnable. An eight win season, unthinkable just 10 weeks ago, is now a distinct possibility.
The kids from Starkville, MS now own wins over three ranked teams: Auburn, Kentucky, and Alabama. They beat a scrappy UAB team and were competitive against #25 Tennessee and #16 South Carolina.
"Crooming" is a dying concept, because there's no shame in losing to a capable team, and the Bulldogs' record proves that they are certainly capable. And so is Sylvester Croom.
Winning at Mississippi State might be the toughest job in the SEC, and in his third year Sylvester Croom has produced. Croom is a good man doing things the right way, and FanHouse is pleased to revoke the dreaded 'Crooming' label from popular use. Please update your urban dictionaries, folks.

Instead of just revoking the phrase, you should apologize to Sly Croom for it. It was highly disrespectful! I wonder what happens when Saban loses to UGA, LSU, Mississippi ST. and Auburn in the same year...

Look at N.Dame, head coach walked into a team some else built and won in is 1st year. While Sly did it right and started builting his from the ground up from day one. The people in Mississippi should take pride because they knew not only would it take the time for this program to built but they gave it to the right guy to do it. Hatse make watse and only given the time to do things right will it work. Go Sly continue to do it right.

Hmmm... apologize for it?
Nah, I'm actually pretty proud of it. USA Today picked it up from FanHouse. It's pretty cool when a phrase you invent becomes popular terminology.
Croom is a big boy and shut up his critics with his actions! Good for him.

Steve, I'm just stating the facts. We all know Auburn lost UGA, LSU, and Miss. State, but i'm betting Bama fans won't be happy if/when Saban loses to the same teams that Shula did in his last year, with the exception of UGA. "Alabama has only one important victory"... It's sad that most of you fans only care about beating Auburn. Bear Bryant sure did have a lot of wins, but his most famous quote : "I'd rather beat that cow college (Auburn) once than beat Texas ten times."
"Well, when the cows get mad, we start kicking."

Ryan, here are Sly Croom's words on the phrase "crooming":
"That was the bottom, the worst of the worst, when Mississippi State can beat you at home, so they made a coaching change," said Croom, whose team is one win away from bowl eligibility this year. "What that means is, there's not very much respect out there for our program, and there still isn't."

Croom earned his keep this year. Saban beat rival Tenn bad and I hope to the same to the AUBIE .
On a serious note Why would Tubby leave for A and M ??? He has a great team and a great reputation. Maybe he is still pissed about them getting on a plane to talk to another coach you think ????

Sorry Crimson, but I think Tubs stays. The entire campus of Auburn University has rallied behind him! He has too much to gain by staying. Tubs now commands his own team and Lowder, the trustees, the A.D. and others know what a great coach we have. Once again, I'm betting he stays.

Croom took over a program that no one else really wanted. His first year would also be the beginning of the 4 years of sanctions from the NCAA. To say he "earned his job" is outrageous, especially considering a school like Mississippi State. It takes years to wash out the slum that Croom took on. Not only does he deserve to keep his job throughout the 4 year probation years, but also an additional year each season MS State was limited in scholarships, money for facilities, and reputation.
In closing, I guess the earth can start to rotate again since "crooming" has been deleted. Wow... thanks...... (NOTE: MAJOR SARCASM IN CLOSING).

As a bulldog alum, I am incredibly proud of what Croom has done on and off the field. It was so refreshing to see our players go out there with confidence and I am sure that has as much to do with with the respect and discipline he has given them as it does with the winning record they boast now. Croom is a great coach and I hope he is at State for a good long while.

Some of the people on these message boards are really retarded. First of all, Bama didn't even win a National Championchip in the 1950's. Howerever, they have won more since 1950 than any other team. Certainly more than Aubie. It doesn't look like Aub. is doing much to help their case. Bama's record is an improvement from last season bur Aub. is on the downslide. As a bama fan, I hope Tubberville stays so that he can go down with the ship.

I've lived in Alabama for about five years now. And in that time I've developed a mild contempt for the average Alabama fan. Sure, I have Bama friends; so, largely, I try to stay off the subject of football. For the most part, they suffer from a peculiar disasociative disorder: namely, delusion. They begin every season thinking they are the best team in the nation, they always have the best recruiting class, they think every high school player dreams of playing there...in short, they don't realize that they are a very average program. They've been nothing special since they disgracefully dislodged Stallings from his job; and, because of the unfamiliarity with reality and the attendant expectations that result, Bama will not make it back to the fraternity of major players for a good, long while.
I'm a fourth generation State fan; and if you learn anything as a Dawg fan, it's humility. When I attend games in Tuscaloos, or when I hear their fans talk about 18-22 year old boys, I feel like I'm talking to lunatics. When these kids do well, they're enchanted; but let one of them fumble inside the redzone and cost a game, they will publically -- on air -- crucify these boys...it's disturbing. Bama fans haven't come to terms with the constraints of modern college football. You cannot put 200 boys on scholarship anymore; you can't pay their daddy's mortgage and their momma's pontiac and expect to get away with it for long. The titanic expectations freighted on these kids and this program will destroy it, plain and simple. And, as a State fan, I can't pretend it's not hilarious...we'll just keep collecting all these kids who've always 'dreamed of playing at Alabama'.
The situation with Croom is like a fairy tale. Although we lost to Arkansas today, our season has been magical thus far; and it can only get better at this point. We are grateful. Yes, there were some grumblings last year, but nothing like the things said about Shula. And, with respect to Shula, he was a pretty good coach -- one who should have been given a few more years. However, he's nowhere near the coach that Croom is; and Croom has proven himself at every level. If there were ever a candidate for a head-coaching position to be drawn from the ranks of assistant professionals, it's Croom. And to be past over for Shula, that's a real slap in the face -- one that I doubt Croom will soon forget. I admit that I love it for him; it makes me feel good all over.
Also, Bama, how does it feel to pay an additional 3 million a year over the course of eight years? That makes 24 million; and of that, at least THREE MILLION DOLLARS COMPLETELY PISSED AWAY! Shula was a bargin. Now you and Notre Dame are stuck with the sub-prime mortgages of college football.
Can you hear my cowbell now?
