Look closely and you'll notice that when USC defensive back Shareece Wright knocks the socks off of Washington's Jake Locker, the Husky quarterback has yet to set foot out of bounds. Sure his body is leaning as if it is on its way out of bounds but his last step was in-bounds...but the Pac Ten officialls pulled out the yellow hanky nonetheless.
Now go to 4:14 into this and watch John David Booty throw the interception. On the return, do you see the late hit--or does it look like someone is making a tackle which leads to a player going out of bounds? Guess what the Pac Ten officials thought?
Even Washington head coach Ty Willingham thought the penalties against USC were excessive and we hear USC coach Pete Carroll says that conference officials have some explaining to do.

I think calling it "incompetence" is giving them far too much credit. I believe they're guilty of bias, especially when it comes to non-conference games.

If you think the Pac-10 is bad, you should see SEC officials.

I'm used to seeing far worse from Pac-10 refs that by comparison, those calls didn't seem bad at all.

During the game, numerous calls looked very suspect, and I was amazed that the T.V. commentators (Musburger & co.) never appeared to examined the replays closely at all, but rather kept to the "storyline" that USC was trying to punish the quarterback, etc. I hope the PAC-10 officials look at the poor officiating in this game and take some action.

i love oklahoma fans. pretty soon they will argue that pac 10 refs cant tell a false start call from a illegal man downfield penalty. to sarcastically paraphrase: "im so shocked that they missed that false start call. he *** moved! just another biased pac 10 non conference call. though it was the first play of the game it changed EVERYTHING." or something like that.

Has there ever been a player in a game whose "last step" was not in-bounds????

To all that critize the refs : can you do better?
Go and apply to officate it takes years of doing
high school games and ankle biters on sat. Most
assocs. require you to be in shape and all require
passing scores. Sure the refs make mistakes, they
are human---how many mistakes do the players
and coaches make calling the wrong play dropping
a pass, fumbles etc. Those refs are out on the field
for one reason LOVE OF THE GAME it ain' the pay!

The USC player was out of bounds when he made the hit. His left foot is out of bounds and that is a roughing penalty.

The defender cannot go out of bounds to make a tackle. The USC player's left foot is way over the sideline.

Interesting thoughts about Wright being out of bounds. "Running down the sideline" seems extreme, though it seems Wright's left foot indeed touches out of bounds before Locker's. What's curious is that the two line judges did not call the penalty and they were the ones who could determine when Locker was out of bounds.

The Pac-10 officials this day treated the Trojans like the NFL treats the Oakland Raiders....with contempt....wave the greenback.
Don't know if some of you bloggers noticed: I saw both Ellis and Jackson's jerseys twisted & folded much of the second half indicating ALOT of holding that was called ONLY once when the center was caught with his fingers pulling on the #75 jersey on a pass play.
Pac-10 OFFICIALS, CALL A FAIR AND EVEN GAME. That's all OU and everyone is asking (or demanding). Either call penalties on both sides (so the game goes on for 4 hours) or don't call them unless they are absolutely flagrant. (Which some of the personal fouls were.)
FIGHT ON!

RUSTY, Mistakes are not the question. I have been an official for soccer games, it is grueling, yet calling a FAIR & IMPARTIAL game is what its all about. Flagrant fouls in soccer, YELLOW or RED Card. Same as a personal foul. Non flagrant fouls, ball goes over from point of foul.
If the refs have a LOVE OF THE GAME, then it should have been called FAIR & IMPARTIAL. Examples: Pass interferrnce on Taylor Mays, he looked back towards the ball, the ball sailed 12-15 years PAST them deep into the end zone (they both fell on the 6 yard line).....Another: pass interferrence on Mozique McCurtis, which should have been face guarding at the most, did you see the other UW receive ready to collide with USC #7.....Yet another, how many holding calls did UW get in the 2nd half (1) when there should have been at least 5 more you could see on instant replay.
LOVE OF THE GAME, yes.....FAIR & IMPARTIAL, no
FIGHT ON!
