Ohio State came to Seattle on Saturday and basically pushed the Huskies around. They were the faster, more physical team that day, and there is no argument who the better team was when the scoreboard flashed zero's. Jim Tressel's defense in particular was very impressive, and despite over 100 yards rushing for UW QB Jake Locker, the Buckeyes gave up only 14 points to UW in a punishing performance. But did Ohio State's defense cross the line?
You hate be a whiner after the fact, and that if they really were against the rules, they would have been called by the officials....but....the tape doesn't lie. It's hard not to see some of this and wonder exactly what the refs were thinking (or, likely not thinking). Give this first one about a minute in, and you'll see the head-twist, plus more after the jump:
This one was almost as bad, but the helmet actually came off. Also check the late hit after Locker threw the ball. No flags were thrown:
As UW's own Ed Cunningham said during the ESPN broadcast, this isn't something that normally happens on a Jim Tressel-coached football team. His guys play hard, aggressive defense, every single week, and that's part of their identity. But I have to say, if these things happened in the NFL, some of these guys would be facing some fines from Roger Goodell right about now. Oh well, boys will be boys I guess.

It's called a contact sport. Willingham did not have a problem, according to the Seattle papers, with the Ohio State play. Don't hurt yourself on the keyboard--you still have SC and Washington State to bruise your ego.

Ohio native, Washington resident. Spent equal time in both states. Attended BOTH colleges. I went to the game Saturday with my daughter. Both sides committed penaties NOT seen on TV. Both sides "cheated". But if anyone here played the sport, in high school or college, you know that stuff happens all the time! Ohio State was clearly the better team. Washington is going to be great, just not this year. With Locker, they have a shot in the next couple years to be NC contenders.
What you need to look at is the coaches, both past and present. OSU had a good coach and great recruiter in John Cooper, who turned it over to a great coach in Jim Tressel. UW went from good coach, bad cheater Rick Neuhiesel, to unprepared coach Gilbertson, to Tressel equivalent Ty Willingham. UW is rebuilding while OSU is reloading.

Oh My Goodness, I had such respect for the UW program until I see these feeble attempts to discredit an assertive, aggressive defense.
Even a high school assistant coach can see that these events, all cited, are inadvertant and non-malicious. The referee is standing directly in view of the hits on all occasions. While I agree that the first inadvertant attempt to impede all progress (you see, that is the goal of a 4-short situation for the defense...impede all forward progress...it is a fundamental principle of the sport called American Football)While inadvertant, was a technically a penalty and easily could have been called, there is absolutely no way someone can assert this event or any were malicious and on purpose. Watch the video! It is clear also the the roughing call would have had to been called on his own man, as he stumbled over a UW guy.
I really have lost a lot of respect for UW and their program, growing in strength under coach Willingham (although the undercurrent on all the blogs is that they want him OUT....hmmm, what is that Washington?) But simple minded posts like these are changing my mind. My daughter dreams about attending UW and after seeing this post couldn't believe that a fan would take the time to whine so publically. She hopes it is not indicative of the typical fan base. UW lost to a better team. If they blayed 10 games against OSU they would lose 8. Next year, that number will be less...they will win more and more as they have a real program developing. I hope the fans can come to their senses and support the team when they win and lose, instead of casting dispersions. Clearly, the late hits and helmet thrashes were devastationg to the teams ability to win...was a single remark amde bu the offended players (no that I saw).
Gimme a break. What a bunch of whiners. OSU may indeed be overrated, certainly on offense. But to even suggest that Tressle would for one minute tolerate unfair play is simply ignorant...not niave, ignorant. Jim Tressle looks to solve the problem. It think you confuse him with Pete Carroll, who looks straight at the camera for the best Hollywood footage duringa nd around game time, but looks the other way when a team member gets into legal trouble or is involved in a flagrant personal foul on the field. Howis Mataluga not in prison, the effin thug with no future. I can't wait till he jumps pro and gets to find out what being biullied and being a criminal is really all about. Say high to OJ for me Mataluga, you'll be rooming with him soon, and yet Father Pete will defend your honor nonetheless.
